Aquarius 1/20-2/18 February is the month to woo, Aquarius. It is also your month, so take Cupid’s heart-tipped arrow and try not to fail at this too. Pisces 2/19-3/20

Cancer 6/22-7/22

The perfect date is waiting just around the corner. Apparently fish is the best thing that will show up on the menu, and enjoy the crab.

Watch out for any Pisces on dates. They seem to have a recent crab fetish. Keep all your legs accounted for.

Aries 3/21-4/19

Leo 7/23-8/22

Valentine’s Day is supposedly a day of love. Looks like you get to watch Netflix, again.

Spending a day alone playing an MMROPG isn’t sad. Don’t worry, your online friends love you and will spend their Valentine’s with you.

Taurus 4/20-5/20

Virgo 8/23-9/22

Who needs a date, anyway? Not you Taurus. Take the lads or ladies out on the town and enjoy the single season while it lasts.

Gemini 5/21-6/21 It’s time to focus on your lover, not yourself. Instead of fussing over what they will do for you, think about what can be done for them.

Your lover has the perfect date planned. It is so perfect that you had absolutely nothing to do with it. The hints left on the coffee table were not from you. At all.

Sagittarius 11/22-12/21 Movie night with the bae, and Valentine’s Day is the perfect occasion to peruse the classics like “Saw,” “Friday the 13th” or “Silent Hill.” Who needs that lovey-dovey stuff anyway?

Capricorn 12/22-1/19 The stars won’t tell anyone that you are crying to yourself on Valentine’s Day. Broken hearts aren’t easy to fix, but chocolate doesn’t hurt.

A guide to rom-coms Valentine’s Day is the one day of the year where it is OK to be shamelessly sappy and romantic with film choices. It is time to break out the romantic comedies. Whether you are spending a night with yourself or a significant other, these movies are the perfect place to start.

student life

From left: UI students Kyle and Shelby Swanstrom, assisant professors Ryanne Pilgeram and Russell Meeuf, and WSU student Derek Thompson with UI’s Trevor Krauer.

The “meet cute”

Corrin Bond Rawr In storytelling, a “meet cute” is a fictional scene where two potential romantic partners meet for the first time. With Valentine’s Day right around the corner, three University of Idaho couples share their own “meet cute”moments in this Rawr Q & A.

Kyle and Shelby Swanstrom Shelby: We met when I was in eighth grade and he was in ninth. We were in yearbook class together. He asked me out to a dance and we started dating — I think we’ve been together, what now, seven years? Kyle: Yeah, pretty much, we were in yearbook class together and I showed up a little late and I didn’t really know what was going on, I had some catching up to do. My best friend was in the class and we were talking about this upcoming dance and I was like, ‘Well, this Shelby lady is pretty cool,’ so I tried to ask her out. I had never had a girlfriend before and I was like ‘Shoot, I’m going for it.’ Rawr: What’s your favorite part about each other now? Shelby: He’s very loyal and dependable. He’s really easy to be able to lean on and he’s very kind, he’s a golden-

hearted person. Kyle: It’s been super, yeah, words can’t explain it. It’s been nice — I’ve loved being married to you and going to school and being married to you is so easy. You are super caring and kind and you like to take care of things and you can multitask and I can’t. You’re fun, too. Shelby: He has the best dad jokes ever. Kyle: I’m a bit of a dork, but she puts up with it.

Ryanne Pilgeram and Russell Meeuf Ryanne: We met as freshmen as undergrads at Pacific University in Oregon. We lived down the hall from each other in the dorms and we were both in the honors program so we took a lot of our classes together. Rawr: What are your respective favorite parts of your relationship? Russell: Just having someone who’s your best friend and having someone you’re really compatible with you around all the time is really nice. Ryanne: I can’t imagine a life where I don’t get to bounce all these different ideas off of him. We really are best friends. We have three kids so we talk through our kids being sick, but we can talk about what’s going on at work and we have a lot of the same hobbies and interests — we are awkwardly compatible.

Different UI couples share their respective journeys and experiences

Rawr: After 16 years together, what advice would you give to couples who are just starting out? Russell: You have to actually be partners. It can’t be one person pulling too much weight in one area, you have to share the load. Ryanne: Choose wisely. If someone seems like, ‘Ugh, I don’t think I’ll be able to put up with this,’ then don’t put up with it because being in a bad relationship is way more work than just being alone.

Trevor Kauer and Derek Thompson Trevor: I’m an EMT with Moscow Ambulance and I was giving CPR education lessons at the Farmers Market this last summer, teaching about compressions and how to give breaths, and he was at the Farmers Market with a couple of friends. He came up to me and asked me how to do CPR and it was actually pretty cute. It was kind of like a romantic comedy, honestly. Derek: It was totally obvious. We had Starbucks afterward and went swing dancing — just a coffee date turned into this seven hour date and it was the best first date. Rawr: What’s your favorite part about your relationship? Trevor: I’m a very black and white

person. Derek: I am the definition of gray. It’s two in the morning and I’m like, ‘I want Dutch Bros, let’s go.’ Trevor: And I’m like, ‘That’s not a logical decision, I have to get up for school in the morning’ and we end up meeting halfway in the middle or do some crazy adventure because I know have to step outside of my box and he makes me step out of my little safety box, but I bring him down to the ground sometimes. Derek: I am crazy and he definitely makes it me more realistic — about just everything. He grounds me. I’m idealistic and love doing everything and he’s like, ‘OK, think about the future, how is this going to help you?’ Rawr: Even though you go to different schools (Trevor is at UI and Derek, WSU), are you able to make it work? Trevor: We just celebrated our six-month anniversary — it was a very typical gay weekend, but it was also super straight because we went and watched “The Book of Mormon” Broadway, but then we went to a hockey game — we’re pretty all over the scale. Issues meet art events

Will Meyer Rawr There is a general hype about most movies that come out of Hollywood. There is more for some than others, however, and “The Danish Girl,” is garnering this heightened attention. The critically acclaimed biographical drama, which was limited in its U.S. release in November 2015, was inspired by the true story of Lili Elbe, who underwent the first sex-reassignment surgery. The film’s foundation of truth and its portrayal of a relevant societal issue are among the reasons why the Kenworthy Performing Arts Centre decided to bring “The Danish Girl” to Moscow for Valentine’s Day weekend, said Kenworthy Operations Director Jamie Hill. “It’s a true story, and I think it is always important to show those true stories, especially on something that’s a major topic in our country right now,” Hill said. The film, which includes cast members like Eddie Redmayne and Alisha Vikander, played at both the Venice and Toronto International Film Festivals, but hasn’t been widely available to the public. Hill said in addition to wanting to show a film that addresses pertinent social issues, another goal of the Kenworthy’s film selection committee is to expose the public to Rawr lesser-known films. “A lot of the stuff that we For more Rawr content, visit bring in has a tendency to be uiargonaut.com more art house/independent (type) films,” Hill said. Hill said many committee members requested that the film be shown at the Kenworthy, and they’re not the only ones who are eager to watch “The Danish Girl.” University of Idaho student Jackie Hamblen said along with the subject and novelty of the movie, she is excited to see Eddie Redmayne’s performance. “He is very talented at portraying other people, like in ‘The Theory of Everything,’” Hamblen said. Hamblen said she’s happy this subject is something that can be shown to general audiences, which shows a shift toward more accepting and understanding viewers. This particular movie is something that Julia Kehleher, program coordinator at the UI LGBTQA Office, sees as an example of a positive representation of transgender people. “From the preview, it looks like it’s written to address a wide audience to really talk more about transgender identities, and really to show the general public more about it,” Keleher said. Keleher said there’s something about movies like “The Danish Girl” — ones that explore the life of someone controversial from a normal standpoint — that encourages society’s acceptance of transgender people.

The Kenworthy’s upcoming film, ‘The Danish Girl,’ explores themes of life and love

Will Meyer | Rawr

The Kenworthy Performing Arts Centre will show “The Danish Girl” over the course of Valentine’s Day weekend. “It (also) helps with people who maybe identify as transgender, and they might be coming out,” Keleher said. “That really helps when people become comfortable with their identity in a more welcoming society.” Kehleher said that the setting of the movie, which is in the early part of the twentieth century, may open eyes to the fact that there have always been people who have identified as transgender and that it’s not just a modern concept. “There are a lot of people that are looking at it from the historical aspect, and talking about it,”

Keleher said. “I think this will create a lot more buzz about it — it’s a film that people are going to see and people are going to talk about it.” “The Danish Girl” will be screened at 8 p.m. Friday, 5 and 8 p.m. Saturday and at 4 and 7 p.m. Sunday at the Kenworthy Performing Arts Centre in downtown Moscow. The film is rated R and tickets are $6 for adults. Will Meyer can be reached at arg-arts@uidaho.edu

Caught lube-handed Lyndsie Kiebert Rawr “Push harder,” Lacey moaned, her toes curled and breathe heavy. “There, is that working?” Dave asked, his muscles taut and slick. “We have to get this done, put your weight into it,” Lacey begged, and Dave did as she asked — to no result. Everything would have been fine had Lacey’s mother not called five minutes before to announce her untimely arrival. Lacey, Dave, and Lacey’s parents had made plans to go out on a Valentine’s Day double date “for fun.” But Lacey knew her parents were having troubles — a night out might rekindle some young, romantic spark her parents still harbored but had forgotten. When she’d mentioned the idea a week earlier, she and her mother had been equally excited. Now, her mother’s frantic voicemail played across the studio apartment from the small answering machine. Sprawled across crisp sheets and tangled in limbs and rose petals, Lacey thought about how it couldn’t have come at a worse time. It had been a simple plan, really. Pick up the pre-ordered package from the erotica shop on 3rd Street on the way home from work, swing by Safeway for Dave’s favorite chocolate-covered pretzels and a can of whipped cream, then be home with enough time to get ready for dinner at Maialina’s with Mom and Dad. The frisky night would ensue when they got home. But when she reached the apartment, Lacey found candles, flowers and a love note from her husband. One thing led to another — there was no harm in a pre-dinner quickie, right? — but they soon found themselves in a hurried situation. Now, as Dave strained and Lacey fought to remember the romance of Valentine’s Day before her mother arrived in what was sure to be crisis mode, a perfect night had officially turned south. “Maybe I should use that strawberry lube that came in the package,” Dave’s eyes widened as he made the
