Paco de Lucia 21/12/1947 - 26/02/2014

World renowned flamenco guitarist Paco de Lucia sadly passed away on the 26th February 2014. He will be greatly missed. It was reported that he had suffered a heart attack whilst on a beach with his children in the resort of Cancun in Mexico. Paco was born in Spain December 1947. He began playing the guitar at just five years of age and at the age of eleven made his first public appearance on Radio Algeciras. Paco was only fourteen when he recorded his first record ‘Los Chiquitos de Algeciras’ with his brother Pepe de Lucia. He later went on to collaborate with his other brother Ramon de Algeciras on albums including 'Musica clasica transcrita para guitarras’ (1966) 'Dos guitarras flamencas en America Latina’ (1967) Paco's earlier albums were based on traditional flamenco guitar rythyms played with Paco's unique style and harmonies. Paco met fellow flamenco artists Sabicas and Mario Escudero in New York and they would spend nights together playing. Paco was influenced by Sabicus and Escudo and they encouraged him to start composing his own material and explore new possibilities with flamenco guitar. Paco did just that and in the seventies began to release some truly ground breaking works collaborating and performing with fellow world class artists

including vocalist Camaron de la Isla, guitarists Al Di Meola, Carlos Santana, Larry Coryell and John McLaughlin, to name a few.

Some of the changes include a new bracing scheme, protein glues and Taylors Expression System 2 onboard electronics. We’ll be sure to check out one of these guitars in a future issue.

Guitarist Of The Future? Due for release 7th April is a five track EP composed by Squarepusher and played by robots known as the Z-Machines. The guitar is played by a robot with 78 fingers and 12 picks. A video of the robots playing one of the tracks can be seen on You-Tube. You have to appreciate the engineering... Record Your Acoustic Acousticlink is a pickup and USB interface for acoustic guitars. The pickup is easily fitted with no drilling required. The package also comes with Cubase LE recording software. At around £30 we think it offers good value for money.
