Prescott True West-

Real Adventure

Founded in 1864 as a pioneer settlement on the edge of American civilization in what was then New Mexico-Arizona territory, Prescott retains its frontier spirit and western pride. Prescott staked its claim as a place unlike any other when 150 years ago, the first 50 inhabitants hand built 14 log structures from native timbers. That helped define the community. Today, with a population exceeding 40,000, Prescott still is rugged, picturesque and altogether distinctly proud. Located in the central

highlands of Arizona and nestled against the 1.25 million acres of Prescott National Forest, the “Mile High City” known as Prescott boasts four moderate seasons. Outdoor recreation? Name your choice. Prescott’s got it all Arts and culture? Something for every taste. Most of all, you’ll enjoy genuine Western hospitality surrounded by a heritage that makes Prescott one of the “Top Five—Must see” destinations in Arizona, according to USA Today.

Dining Experiences Around Every Corner

As you stroll past any of the more than 700 buildings on the National Register of Historic Places cited on the National Historic Register, you’ll be tempted to step in for a fast meal—or a fine dining experience. You’ll probably be pleased that of the more than 200 places to eat in the city, a majority are “hometown” owned and managed. They range from “Mom n’ Pop” eateries to sophisticated dining in elegant surroundings. You’ll

19

be surprised at the ethnic variety available, too. Of course, you can sample locally brewed award-winning beverages at micro breweries or wine-tasting shops. You may want to try one of the newest. It is a recently opened meadery, just up Gurley Street on the way to Sharlot Hall Museum. If you’re of such a mind, visits some local pubs and try some of the wines which come from Arizona wineries and vineyards.

Welcoming Western Culture and Hospitality You won’t escape the vibrant feeling that you are welcome, no matter where you roam the historic downtown area. Locals will greet you with genuine smile and “Howdy” or “Nice to see you.” In the center

of town, looming large over a square block ringed by century-old trees is the oft-photographed granite Courthouse. It’s the focal point for many festivals and events from late April through October.

A Special Place

Arizona’s Christmas City

Known as Arizona’s Christmas City, during winter months, the area around the Courthouse is home for unequaled holiday festivities. You won’t want to miss any of them. Festivities begin in late November after Thanksgiving. The first is the colorful Holiday Light Parade,” where elaborate decorated floats and holiday music will have you smiling. Ultimately, you may wind up at the community bonfire, just up the street at Mile High Middle School. Then the first week of December features the colorful daytime Christmas Parade, with more than 75 entries. It involves almost everyone in town. If you’re lucky enough to be here in early December, you’ll beam when the Courthouse Plaza lights turn the dark into a

27

visit-prescott.com

kaleidoscope of holiday colors. This year will be the 61st annual lighting. You’ll join local students, townspeople and visitors in singing traditional Christmas carols. Just up the street two blocks, you’ll enjoy a Frontier Christmas staged by the Sharlot Hall Museum. You’ll be transported back to how pioneers celebrated Christmas. If you like holiday music, you’ll relish performances of more than 100 local musicians—students, townspeople, churches and individuals—during the melodious Acker Musical Showcase the second weekend of December. Businesses throughout downtown open doors to performers, who sing, play instruments and entertain – and invite you to join in.

28

Whiskey Row Boot Drop the Way to Begin the Year

It’s better than New York and Times Square when the 6-foot illuminated custom-made cowboy boot “drops” at 10 p.m. and again at midnight, December 31, across the street from Courthouse Square. You’ll cheer with the rest with live music, vendors and other festive activities to welcome the New Year. Where else but Prescott—the Boot Drop.

Lectures, Special Events at Higher Education Institutions It’s not uncommon for any of the colleges or universities in the community to have special events—entertainment, lectures, demonstrations and workshops to which the public is invited. The four institutions are 29

Yavapai College (www.yc.edu), Prescott College (www.prescott.edu), Embry Riddle Aeronautical University (www.prescott.erau.edu), and Northern Arizona University (www.yavapai.nau.edu). visit-prescott.com

Festivals, Concerts and Other Events

Scarcely a week goes by from spring through fall when the popular Courthouse Plaza and the surrounding area serve as venues for festivals or events of some sort. During the season you’ll enjoy concerts and other musical performances, square dances, arts and crafts shows, car shows, western reenactments, marathons and the annual Whiskey Off Road, a mountain biking event. The Prescott Downtown Partnership and the Chamber of Commerce work with the City to support many of these activities, providing you and other visitors a glimpse of why Prescott is such a special place.

Yes,andWeParks Have Water Celebrate July 4th

at the World’s Oldest Rodeo largest parade in downtown Prescott, a rodeo dance, a kiddie parade and traditional events that draw people from all over the world. Be a part of this historical and exciting event and see all that Prescott has to offer. Get up close and personal to world famous livestock and professional cowboys and cowgirls who compete for large cash prizes. More information and tickets are available at 20 worldsoldestrodeo.com.

If you want water activities, you’ll enjoy the three local lakes—Willow and Watson, both on the northwest edge of the City. The third is Goldwater. Maintained by the City of Prescott, the 15-acre lake is located in lush pine forests surrounded by rugged mountain areas. The City of Prescott has boat and bicycle rentals available (www.prescottoutdoors.com, 928-925-1410). Two others—Lynx Lake and Granite Basin Lake--are just outside the City limits. If you like kayaking and canoeing—and fishing—you can visit any of these lakes. Of course, all have picnicking and camping sites.

Want to spend time in a park? The City boasts 16 of them, all with amenities that guarantee memorable times. Some are purely recreational— walking and exercising and picnicking. Others are specialized. Some are athletic parks—softball, baseball, soccer, tennis, basketball, skateboards, rink skating and the like. One in particular—McCasland Willow Creek Park features one of only four in the U.S. custom-created Dog Parks. Canines are the most welcome visitors. A complete list with locations is available on the City website: www.prescott-az.gov/services/parks

Antelope Hills Golf Courses— Two full public 18-hole courses, each challenging but not intimidating, will let you walk or ride on lush green turf. Finish the round with a beverage or a meal at the recently remodeled Manzanita Grill. Just north of town at 1 Perkins Drive, it is owned by the City of Prescott and operated by Billy Casper Golf.

Experience Day Trips Prescott’s the perfect place from which to launch memorable day trips, especially to the nearby Verde Valley and adjacent Red Rock Country. It’s only an hour away. Among the favorites are the following: COTTONWOOD, THE HEART OF THE WINE TRAIL Located in the Verde Valley, Cottonwood is ideally situated between the heat of the desert and the cold of Arizona’s high country. Old Town retains the charm of those early beginnings, and the Verde Valley Wine Trail is not to be missed! VERDE CANYON RAILROAD Postcard-perfect scenery, wildlife viewing and first-class service during a leisurely four-hour train ride through the red rock Canyon area. First-class cars boast comfortable seating, complimentary appetizers and a full-service bar. Everyone has access to open-air viewing cars where photographic opportunities abound.

THE BLAZIN’ M RANCH WESTERN DINNER THEATRE Tucked along the banks of the scenic Verde River, this popular family destination is a great activity. It is timed perfectly after you finish your ride on the Verde Canyon Railroad. The ranch activities include a shooting gallery, roping lessons, Old-Time photos, a saloon, museum and unique gift shops. Top it off with a chuckwagon -style meal, followed by a live Western stage production with cowboy comedy, storytelling and award-winning musicians! TOWN OF JEROME Stroll the winding switchback streets of what was once known as the “…wickedest town in the West.” At one time the fourth largest town in Arizona, Jerome was a mining community founded a few years after the Civil War on the side of 5,200 foot high Cleopatra Hill. The mines are now abandoned, but Jerome thrives as a popular tourist community with dozens of usual shops, boutiques, exhibits, museums and restaurants.
