About our Town!

Welcome to Williams, Arizona, located in the heart of the Kaibab National Forest at an elevation of 6,770 feet.

A small, mountain community in Northern Arizona, just an hour south of the Grand Canyon, Williams has been host to world travelers for over 100 years. Located on Interstate 40 between Kingman and Flagstaff, Williams is a 4 hour drive from Las Vegas / McCarran Airport, 3 hours from Phoenix / Sky Harbor, and 30 minutes from Flagstaff/Pulliam, major regional airports. Additionally, Williams can be reached by private aircraft flying into H. A. Clark Memorial Field (P32) and by Amtrak.

Founded in 1881, Williams was named for the famous trapper, scout and mountain man, “Old Bill Williams.� Boasting seven area fishing lakes, plentiful hiking, four seasons of beautiful high country weather and an abundance of wildlife, Williams offers unlimited recreational opportunities for the outdoor enthusiast.

The Historic Downtown District on Route 66 covers six square blocks and includes many shops and restaurants. The Grand Canyon Railway and its rides to the Grand Canyon is a block away while the Bearizona Wildlife Park is within minutes.

You can stay at any of the outstanding hotels in Williams and drive to the Canyon or, better yet, ride the Grand Canyon Railway from its Williams depot directly into the National Park. Make it a multi-day trip and spend the night in the Canyon itself!

While in Williams, consider visiting the Bearizona Wildlife Park, shop at any of the stores along historic Route 66, dine in our terrific restaurants and enjoy a variety of foods, taste our local wines and beers, visit a deer farm, fish at any one of our seven lakes, camp in Kaibab National Forest, hike the surrounding Ponderosa Pine trails, golf at our acclaimed golf course, or simply explore on your own. Located just a few miles southeast of Williams. This 47,762 acre Wilderness offers a wide range of vegetation from mesquite in the southern portion to ponderosa pine in the northern canyons at an elevation of 6,500 feet. Sycamore Falls is a dramatic spectacle in the Spring when the Winter snows start to melt and during Summer monsoon rains. A short drive and an even shorter hike gets you to this natural wonder! Stop in the Williams-Forest Service Visitor Center for your free map.

And while there, ask about all of the many programs run by the Forest Service.

Bring your fishing pole and try your luck at one of our five trout stocked lakes. The scenery is magnificent and the fish are mouth watering.

The lakes can be fished from shore or in a boat. If “Big Boy” toys are your adrenaline rush then you owe it to yourself to explore our 1,143 miles of U.S. Forest Service roads in the National Kaibab Forest with your ATV, Rhino, Razor or Jeep.

T op Things To Do Lava River Cave

Experience a unique underground hike in Lava River Cave. This mile long volcanic lava tube was first discovered in 1913 and maintains a temperature of 32-40 degrees year around. It is located about 30 miles east of Williams but is easy to find. The U.S. Forest Service has made an attractive entrance down to this tube using native stone to form a stairway. Once inside the lava tube its ceiling is tall enough to stand upright. You must bring flashlights as once you are past the daylight you are in complete darkness.

Raft the Grand Canyon Raft the Colorado River inside the Grand Canyon! Most people think that this requires months or years of advance planning, but Williams is central to both the one-day smooth water rafting trips and the exciting 40 mile one-day white water rafting trips. These ultimate adventure trips can sometimes be made with only a day notice. Call or visit the Williams-Forest Service Visitor Center for more information.

Hike the Grand Canyon

Hike to the village of Supai at the bottom of the Grand Canyon.

Make Williams your base camp for this unbelievable experience!

Supai is located in the remote Southwestern branch of the Grand Canyon and is about a two hour drive from Williams. The well-marked trailhead into Supai is 8 miles long over rugged terrain and is accessible only by foot, horseback or helicopter. There you find Havasu Creek and three of the most beautiful waterfalls in all of Grand Canyon. Camping and lodging are available by advance reservation only from the Havasupai Tourist Office. If you are a hiker, this is a must see!

T

he arrival of the Grand Canyon Railway in 1901 provided a comfortable and affordable alternative to the stage coach, and quickly became the preferred mode of travel to the Grand Canyon’s South Rim. The stagecoach companies were not happy with this development, but the guests arrived rested and ready to explore the newly famous gorge.

The Santa Fe Railway provided the funding for guest accommodations and attractions, and worked hard to market the train and their new hotel, El Tovar, which opened in 1905. The Santa Fe hired the Fred Harvey Company to operate the new guest facilities, and El Tovar was a Harvey Hotel and a Harvey House Restaurant. The Historic District evolved and grew as tourism increased, and remains the center of activity at the South Rim today.

There are many buildings of historical significance that visitors will find interesting in the Historic District during their visit to the South Rim. Mary Colter’s first building, the Hopi House, opened in 1905 to provide visitors with an opportunity to learn about Native Americans and their arts and crafts, and a chance to purchase a unique memento. Her iconic Lookout Studio and Hermits Rest were added in 1914 as additional destinations to relax and

explore the canyon vistas. As visitation increased, Bright Angel Lodge was added in 1935 as a lower cost option to El Tovar, and today houses the complimentary Fred Harvey History Room.

Additional lodging was added in the 1970s and 1980s with the opening of Maswik Lodge, Thunderbird Lodge and Kachina Lodge. Kachina and Thunderbird lodges are right on the rim, while Maswik Lodge is just a short walk or shuttle ride away. Canyon views from overlooks in this area are stunning and offer a different perspective from those at Mather Point, where the Visitor Center is located.

Today, Grand Canyon National Park Lodges operates 5 lodges on and near the rim, Phantom Ranch at the bottom of the canyon, numerous restaurants and gift shops, in-park narrated motorcoach tours and the famous mule rides. Overnight guests will find a wide variety of lodging, shopping, and dining choices, and can conveniently enjoy the legendary canyon sunrise and sunset. Guests who are only visiting for the day will want to be sure to visit the Historic District to experience the human history that helps make a visit to Grand Canyon so special. Either way, a visit to Grand Canyon is sure to provide lasting memories and experiences.
