Did You Know? / Arizona
Arizona FUN FACTS ABOUT
The Cleveland Indians and New York Giants were the first Major League Baseball teams to conduct spring training within Arizona (Tucson, 1947). Arizona is one of only two states that does not observe Daylight Savings time. Hawaii is the other state. The Arizona Diamondbacks won the World Series in just their fourth year of existence, becoming the fastest expansion team in the Major Leagues to win a championship. Arizona is home to the world’s largest rose bush. Planted in Tombstone during 1885, the giant rose bush covers an area of 9,000 square feet and its trunk has a 12-foot circumference. The University of Arizona Wildcats and the Arizona State University Sun Devils baseball teams have won a combined total of nine national baseball championship titles. “Skydive Arizona” is the largest skydiving center in the world. Spring Valley, Arizona is located within Yavapai County and has a population of approximately 1,000 residents. Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport features the world’s first public transport system - PHX Sky Train® - that goes over an active airport taxiway. 10
Arizona has eighteen national monuments, more than any other state in the United States. Outdoor enthusiasts can (weather permitting) ski in Flagstaff and sun bathe at a pool in Glendale on the same day! The Hopi Village in Navajo County is the oldest continually-inhabited village in America, dating back to at least 1150 AD. The average date for the last measurable snowfall (0.1 inch or more) in Flagstaff, AZ is April 22. Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport has been dubbed “America’s Friendliest Airport”. Arizona is home to the largest solar telescope in the world, located at Kitts Peak National Observatory (55 miles west-southwest of Tucson). The Parker Dam crosses the Colorado River between the Whipple Mountains of California and the Buckskin Mountains of Arizona. Sun City, built by developer Del E. Webb, opened on January 1, 1960 as the world’s first “planned” retirement community. The opening weekend drew 100,000 people, resulting in a Time magazine cover story. The Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station, located near Tonopah, generates more electricity than any other power plant in the United States.

Verde Valley Balloons A R I Z O N A A Magical Adventure…You Should Do This! A HOT AIR BALLOON RIDE - you’ve got it on your “Bucket List”. You stop and watch every time you see a hot air balloon in the sky, and you ask yourself: • What is it like? • Is it bumpy? • Does the basket sway? • Is it safe? The next few paragraphs will answer your questions and you will be ready to go on your first hot air balloon ride with Verde Valley Balloons! The first time I flew, I was worried about my fear of heights. When I stay at a hotel, I do not like to be above the ground floor. I never look over the side of any balcony. My pilot assured me that there was something magical that happened in a hot air balloon and that my fear of heights would disappear. And he was right! I was so busy watching what was going on around me, that we were already 50-feet in the air before I realized we had left the ground. Between the sights and the scent of the trees, it was indeed a magical adventure. There is no sense of movement in a
16
balloon. No turbulence, no swaying of the basket - it was as if I was standing on my back porch and all of this fabulous scenery was moving by and under me. With Verde Valley Balloons you will fly over the Prescott National Forest. As you fly above the tops of trees, the beautiful Arizona desert and the Verde River, you will gain a unique perspective of Arizona. This is an amazing flight you will be able to share and remember for years to come! All Verde Valley Balloons’ pilots are FAA certified, fully insured and their equipment is inspected after every 100 hours of flight time. Verde Valley Balloons’ pilots possess many years of experience and impeccable safety records; in addition, the pilots are also highly entertaining. Pilots will regale you with stories of ballooning and the history of the land that you are flying over. For an hour or more you will experience beautiful scenery, hear wonderful
stories and laugh, laugh, laugh. I think it is a requirement for pilots to be funny. Most are really, really funny! Bring your camera to capture the scenery and the joy on the faces of those flying with you. This is absolutely a joyful experience. We meet early in the morning in Cottonwood where we pick you up and take you to our launch site. We launch the balloon, fly for an hour or so and upon landing enjoy a traditional champagne toast, a light snack and then you receive your personalized balloon certificate. To find out more about how you can experience this joyful, magical, once in a lifetime adventure, please call us at 928-239-1308 or visit our website at verdevalleyballoons.com/ TRAVEL. We look forward to answering any additional questions and taking you on the ride of your life! Call or Book Now! You will forever be happy you did!

Every first Saturday of the month, now through April, aviation enthusiasts can head to the Coolidge Municipal Airport for the Coolidge Fly-In. The monthly event features aircrafts from all over the state and country as pilots fly in for breakfast, fuel, and of course to show off their planes to aviation photographers and flight fanciers. Breakfast is served by the Coolidge Lion’s Club in front of the main hangar at the airport, which features a wooden World War II hanger, a symbolic relic of the airport’s former days as the Coolidge Army Airfield. Visitors can enjoy all-you-can-eat pancakes, scrambled eggs, bacon and sausage for just $8 between 8am and 10:30am. For more details, visit www.coolidgechamber.org. Grande or “Big House” stands as a symbol of how they lived, worked and played. Not much is known about what this building stood as experts have varying ideas. Some theorize it was a meeting place due to an intricate chamber of rooms lining the structure. Others say it had a more meaningful significance. Many agree that the multi-floor structure is an amazing timepiece that still stands relatively as it did hundreds of years ago. In 1892, President Benjamin Harrison set aside one square mile of Arizona Territory surrounding the Casa Grande Ruins as the first prehistoric and cultural reserve established in the United States. A few years later, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed Casa Grande Ruins to be a National Monument on August 3, 1918. The management of the Ruins was transferred to the National Park Service during this time. Today, the Indians of the Gila River Community, O’Odham, Hopi, Zuni and others celebrate this great achievement by holding various events. The Native American Music Fest is one of the largest, celebrating the rich history of native music through the ages. The Casa Grande Ruins Monument expansive area incorporates over 400 acres and includes a visitor center, guided tours, a museum, theatre and gift shop. Plan your visit to the Casa Grande National Monument by visiting https://www.nps.gov/ cagr/ or call 520-723-3172. March is Archeology Month with specials for Backcountry Tours. MILE-HIGH PRESCOTT the Arizona archetype with four mild seasons, an average annual daytime temperature of about 70 degrees, and more than 300 days of sunshine. Just 90 miles north of Phoenix, Prescott is situated comfortably against the Prescott National Forest. Great Lakes Airlines serves LAX, and Denver with regular flights. From art to artifacts, Prescott’s history is well documented. Prescott was the Arizona Territory’s original capital and is now home to the World’s Oldest Rodeo. Prescott’s four museums bear witness to this area’s Native American, military and Western pioneer history and heritage. Downtown’s Whiskey Row still houses saloons patronized by Old West legends like Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday. Courthouse Plaza, in the heart of downtown, is bustling with activity in Prescott. During the summer months, the elmshrouded venue beats to five nights of free, live entertainment. The plaza also hosts community events, arts, crafts and car shows. Courthouse Plaza was named one of the Top Ten Public Spaces in the United States by the prestigious APA (American Planning Association). One might think that Arizona is an arid moonscape dotted with cacti and other prickly plant life, but Prescott is a mile above sea level and enjoys four mild seasons and blooming flora. The city boasts 16 parks and three lakes, with kayak and canoe rentals available at Watson, Goldwater and Lynx Lakes. Bike rentals are available at Watson Lake. Prescott also caters to those in the mood for an outdoor odyssey of trail trekking, with more than 450 miles of groomed trails for hiking, biking and horseback riding. The Mile-High Trail System contains approximately 28 miles of trails, including Rails-to-Trails projects along
the former Santa Fe Railroad, Prescott Circle Trail System and Greenways Trails System. The Prescott Circle Trail is a network of trails that continues to expand in and around Prescott. The Greenways Trails are urban trails along Granite and Miller Creeks that run through downtown Prescott. Performing and visual arts play a large part in the fiber of this high desert mountain community. In addition to the many area galleries, the Prescott Center for the Arts, the Yavapai College Performing Arts Center, the Sharlot Hall Museum Theater and the historic Elks Opera House provide artistic sustenance to this entertainment savvy locale. Recently, Prescott was named the Top Destination in Arizona for Nature Lovers, by Expedia, the city was also named in the Top 13 Happiest and Healthiest Communities in the country by Time Magazine. More recently, Prescott was named one of the “coolest” downtowns in North America by Expedia, and was nominated by USA Today to be one of the “Top 10 Arizona Travel Destinations”. The American Lung Association consistently ranks Prescott’s air quality to be the best in the continental United States. Throughout the year, Prescott plays host to many events that celebrate the history, culture and art of the West. The summer season heats up with Prescott Frontier Days and World’s Oldest Rodeo (celebrating 130 years this summer), the Prescott Indian Art Market, Prescott Jazz Summit and the Arizona Cowboy Poets Gathering.

Four things you probably didn’t know you could see in Kingman / ARIZONA
Kingman CITY OF
1. Kingman is home to the world’s first and only museum dedicated to electric vehicles. The Route 66 Electric Vehicle Museum established in 2014 is a 3,600 sq.ft exhibit with a handful of vehicles. There are 27 (and counting) vehicles on loan from the Historic Electric Vehicle Foundation.
2. Desert Diamond Distillery is the
City of Kingman Visitor Center 120 West Andy Devine Avenue (Route 66) Kingman, AZ 86401 www.GoKingman.com
oldest working distillery in AZ since prohibition, even if it didn’t open its doors until April of 2010. The little rum factory offers tours and tastings and is craft certified by the American Distillers Institute, fermenting and distilling 100% of their product on-site in a state-ofthe-art Arnold Holstein German still. The Distillery even uses the spirits to make vanilla extracts. All of the rums and vodka have awards and medals at the international level.
3. White Cliffs Wagon Trail, near Historic Downtown Kingman, is one of the few places in the American Southwest
66
where wagon ruts can still be observed etched out in the rock. It was en route to the gold rush of Stockton Hill around 1890, about 8 miles north of town. At that time, Arizona did not have a facility for the mentally ill, i.e. an “insane asylum”, so patents were sent to the institution in Stockton, CA. It is said, that the prospectors heading for the hills acted so crazy, that they were headed for Stockton. Thus - Stockton Hill. Much of that old trail is now Stockton Hill Road (County Hwy 20), the road taken daily by thousands heading for Grand Canyon West.
4. The Mohave Museum of History & Arts has one of only three complete collections of presidential portraits on display. The other two are housed at the Whitehouse and in the National Portrait Gallery at the Smithsonian. The collection in Kingman, like that of the Whitehouse, includes portraits of every First Lady as well.

TOMBSTONE Tombstone is internationally known for its storied past and legendary history. Legends like Wyatt Earp and “Doc” Holliday were “immortalized” after the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral. Walk the streets that these and other legendary men and women once inhibited in the “Town Too Tough to Die”. During the late 1870’s, Tombstone became a bustling boomtown of the Wild West after
starting as a silver mining claim. After a hard day’s work in the mines, Tombstone provided entertainment to the miners. Opera, Theatre, Saloons, Dance Halls and Brothels lined Allen Street and played host to an active nightlife. We invite you to tour the Tombstone Courthouse (now a museum), be a part of the action with live reenactments of the shootouts that made Tombstone famous and then to quench your thirst at the saloon of your choice. Looking for a moment of serenity? Make a pilgrimage to historic St. Paul’s Episcopal Church and join in the celebration of its 135th anniversary. Tombstone has preserved many of the original buildings from its silver boom past. Actors dressed in Western gear walk through town as staged gunfights breakout in the streets. Shop, wine and dine along historical Allen Street and play cowboy/cowgirl!

We’re right on the Colorado River, so there’s year-round boating, fishing, and water sports. We’re the gateway (15 minutes west) to the Imperial Sand Dunes - classic desert terrain for both active off-roading or solitary hiking -- plus it’s famous as a movie location from Rudolph Valentino to Star Wars. We’re surrounded by wide-open spaces including three national wildlife refuges - Imperial, Kofa & Cibola. Just a few miles outside of town, the dark skies will reveal more stars than you’ve ever seen. Along our restored riverfront, bike trails link two state parks, two city parks and a restored wetlands area so there’s great birding and wildlife watching just steps from downtown. Because Yuma is at a natural crossing of the river, all roads led here
for hundreds of years - explore that rich history with a visit to the Yuma Territorial Prison, wander through an authentic miners “ghost town” surrounded by pristine desert scenery at Castle Dome Mines Museum, or shop and dine in historic downtown. And surprise: Yuma is the country’s winter vegetable capital and we’ll help you dig into desert agriculture here on an interactive “Field to Feast” tour, Savor Yuma progressive dinner, or Farmer’s Wife dinner.
