Did You Know? / Arizona

Arizona FUN FACTS ABOUT

Arizona is nick named “The Grand Canyon State” and is home to the Grand Canyon National Park.

The USA Today currently ranks Phoenix’s Sky Harbor Airport as the “Best Airport” in the United States of America. About one-quarter of the state is made up of Indian Reservations.

Arizona ranks as the sunniest state in the U.S., as measured by percentage of sun, total hours of sun and clear days.

The state flower is the Saguaro cactus blossom

The first European documented exploration of the area that comprises the state occurred in 1539 by Marcos de Niza. Yuma, Arizona is the sunniest city in the United States with an annual % average possible sunshine of 90%. A monsoon is traditionally defined as a seasonal reversing wind accompanied by corresponding changes in precipitation. The pop song “Arizona”, written by Kenny Young and performed by former Paul Revere and the Raiders member Mark Lindsay, peaked at Number 10 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 on February 14, 1970. Arizona’s state motto is Ditat Deus (“God enriches”). Arizona became our 48th state on February 14, 1912, the last of the contiguous states to be admitted to the Union. Arizona is home to three of the top four, and four of the top nine, sunniest cities in the United States – Yuma (90%), Phoenix (85%), Tucson (85%) and Flagstaff (78%). The state is home to over 110 wineries, vineyards and cellars. The Willcox wine region produces 74% of the wine grapes grown in the state of Arizona.

The Phoenix-Mesa-Chandler Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) grew by 941,011 people (45.3%) from April 2000 to April 2010 and gained another 382,000 people (estimated) from 2010 to 2015. Humphreys Peak, located about 11 miles north of Flagstaff, is the highest natural point in the state at 12,633 feet. Flagstaff averages 103.6 inches of snow a year, making it the snowiest city in the state. Yuma County produces 90% of the U.S.’s winter supply of lettuce and is the nation’s third largest vegetable producer. Casa Grande soil, the official soil of the state, consists of very deep, well drained soils that formed in old mixed alluvium. Arizona is home to two of the most famous roads in American forklore history – U.S. Route 66 (known as the Will Rogers Highway, the Main Street of America or the Mother Road) and U.S. 80 (“Broadway of America”, Dixie Overland Highway, Ocean to Ocean Highway). Arizona is a right-to-work state. The battleship USS Arizona was named in honor of the state. It was commissioned in 1913 and now rests at Pearl Harbor in Honolulu, Hawaii. State colors are blue and old gold.

The MLB teams are also set up best to sell massive amounts of tickets in a short amount of time, as the beginning of spring training ticket sales can best be described as a feeding frenzy. This means tens of thousands of fans rush to obtain tickets for specific games.

Mysteries of Coolidge / Central Arizona

Coolidge CI TY O F

FOUNDED IN 1925 and named after the 30th president of the United States, Coolidge finds its roots deep in cotton country. In fact, Arizona ranks among the top 10 cotton producing states. Today, cotton plays a vital role in the lifestyle and economy of Coolidge along with light and heavy industrial businesses that have flourished. In addition to Coolidge’s farming and industrial roots, the City has world recognition with some of the most talented musicians in history. Legends, Duane Eddy, Jimmy Dell and Waylon Jennings have musical starts in Coolidge. All of these singers have performed on stages across the

United States. Eddy was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Jennings was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. In 2015, The City along with the Coolidge Chamber of Commerce launched a unique partnership. A former elementary school was transformed into an arts and maker space where artisans, technologists and performers come together to further expand their crafts and share those talents with the rest of the community. Famous to the glass world, Anne Nye chose the Artisan Village of Coolidge to showcase her talent and continues her work in one of the many studios on site. In addition, there are two museums and an art gallery located at the Village. The Pinal Gem & Mineral Museum and the Copper State Heritage Museum offer a one of a kind look into the history of Arizona. The Village Gallery also captures the essence of all the creations

within the Artisan Village. Another museum located just a few minutes away from the Village showcases Coolidge’s early history. The Coolidge Historical Museum has many turn of the Century items used in everyday living to farm implements. The museum’s displays take a nostalgic view in time. One of the main centerpieces of Coolidge has a vast impact on early Native American history with the Casa Grande Ruins National Monument. This National Park Service operated site dates back as early as 1350 C.E. Today, visitors can take a step back in time with the preservation of artifacts and farming techniques used during that time. The Casa Grande or ‘Big House’ still stands today, hundreds of years later and its purpose still remains a mystery.

The event features 110 patron-friendly studios within a 44,000 square-foot space, where guests have a rare chance to meet the artists, see them in action, and learn about their passion, inspiration and techniques. Throughout the 10 weeks, artisans will sketch passionately in pencil, charcoal and pastels; sculpt and fire clay; drill, chisel and carve stone; paint in all media; stain and etch gourds; design lost wax casting; solder and weld jewelry; assemble mosaics and more. Art is for sale and commissions are welcomed. One of this year’s talented artists is Anthony Barbano, a glass-blowing sculptor from Salt Lake City. He specializes in 22 carat gold and pure silver fume glass, creating beautiful, delicate jewelry and glass sculpture. “Being an artist with Italian ancestry, I am drawn to fine art,” Barbano said. “My passion for this art form began when I was just a child. I feel it is important to consistently develop my skills in new glass blowing processes. Challenging myself outside of my comfort zone has helped me grow and develop my skills.” Patrons to EXPO can stroll throughout a two-acre sculpture garden, which includes a Koi pond with waterfall and hummingbird garden surrounded by natural desert. Other highlights include a café, wine tastings, garden parties, book signings, Arabian horse quick-draw event, live music every weekend and more. For 35 years, Thunderbird Artists has played a very important role in uniting gifted artists with patrons across the world by producing award-winning fine art and fine wine festivals. A family-run business, Thunderbird Artists’ success and the encouragement of artists prompted the birth of the Arizona Fine Art EXPO 13 years ago. ARIZONA

Flagstaff CVB

The beauty of Northern Arizona awaits you and certainly should not be missed! Northern Arizona is well known for its wide variety of outdoor recreation opportunities, abundance of trails and forest service roads, extreme topographical and environmental variability, and its rich geologic and human history. There is something for everyone! Whether you are young, mature, single or with family, you are bound to have a memorable time.

NORTHERN ARIZONA features dozens of mountain ranges, including the state’s highest – the San Francisco Peaks. It also contains most of the state’s natural lakes. In the West lies the Grand Canyon, one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World, which was cut millions of years ago by the flow of the Colorado River while the land slowly rose around it. In Northern Arizona, you can do it all! Hike the Grand Canyon rim-to-rim, ski at Arizona Snowbowl near Flagstaff, shop ‘til you drop in the many unique and mystical shops in Sedona, while gazing at the stunning red rocks, or grab a drink and some great food in the 19th century Palace Restaurant & Saloon – once frequented by Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday – on Whiskey Row at the historic Courtyard Square in Prescott. As well, you can experience the world’s best preserved meteorite impact site at Meteor Crater, take a joyride along historical Route 66 – also known as “The Mother Road” – or dare to take a different view of the Canyon from the Skywalk®. Adventure truly awaits for the most enthusiastic and daring! Soar in a helicopter or airplane ride through the Grand Canyon with Papillon Helicopters and Grand Canyon Scenic Airlines. And if you are really up for an adventure, you can raft the Colorado River inside the Grand Canyon for a day or even a week. For a family-friendly option to get to the Canyon, take the

Experience the IMPACT and see where Apollo Astronauts Trained / Northern Arizona

Meteor Crater APPROXIMATELY 50,000 YEARS AGO, a giant asteroid hurtled through our Earth’s atmosphere at 26,000 miles per hour and collided with Northern Arizona’s rocky high plateau. The meteorite, estimated to be only 150 feet across, weighed several hundred thousand tons. Its explosive impact created a chasm as high as a

60-story building and you could fit 20 football fields in the bottom with more than 2 million fans watching from the crater sloping walls. But to really comprehend the enormous size of this crater, you have to see it yourself. The science of meteorites fascinates a growing number of people all over the world. When one gains an understanding of these cosmic visitors – what they are made of, where have they been, how they got here and what effect their arrival may have on our planet – a visit to Meteor Crater becomes infinitely more meaningful. Arizona’s Meteor Crater, located 35 miles east of Flagstaff on Interstate 40 at

Exit 233, is the best preserved meteorite impact site on Earth! The visitor center located at the Crater offers guided rim tours (weather permitting), observation trails and decks, Discovery Center with interactive displays and exhibits, Astronaut Memorial Park with NASA test capsule, unique gift and rock shop and Subway® sandwich shop. The Crater Visitor Center is open 7 days a week, closed only on December 25th.

Just 90 miles north of Phoenix, Prescott is situated comfortably against the Prescott National Forest. Great Lakes Airlines serves LAX and Prescott twice daily with non-stop flights. From art to artifacts, Prescott’s history is well documented. Prescott was the Arizona Territory’s original capital and is now home to the World’s Oldest Rodeo. Prescott’s four museums bear witness to this area’s Native American, military and Western pioneer history and heritage. Downtown’s Whiskey Row still houses saloons patronized by Old West legends like Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday. Courthouse Plaza, in the heart of downtown, is the fulcrum of activity in Prescott. During the summer months, the elmshrouded venue beats to five nights of free, live entertainment. The plaza also hosts community events, arts, crafts and car shows. Courthouse Plaza was named one of the Top Ten Public Spaces in the United States by the prestigious APA (American Planning Association). One might think that Arizona is an arid moonscape dotted with cacti and other prickly plant life, but Prescott is a mile above sea level and enjoys four mild seasons and blooming flora. The city boasts 16 parks and three lakes, with kayak and canoe rentals available at Watson, Goldwater and Lynx Lakes. Bike rentals are available at Watson Lake.

Prescott also caters to those in the mood for an outdoor odyssey of trail trekking, with more than 450 miles of groomed trails for hiking, biking and horseback riding. The Mile-High Trail System contains approximately 28 miles of trails, including Rails-to-Trails projects along the former Santa Fe Railroad, Prescott Circle Trail System and Greenways Trails System. The Prescott Circle Trail is a network of trails that continues to expand, and eventually will encircle all of Prescott. The Greenways Trails are urban trails along Granite and Miller Creeks that run through downtown Prescott. Performing and visual arts play a large part in the fiber of this high desert community. In addition to the many area galleries, the Prescott Center for the Arts, the Yavapai College Performing Arts Center, the Sharlot Hall Museum Theater and the historic Elks Opera House provide artistic sustenance to this entertainment savvy locale. Throughout the year, Prescott plays host to a plethora of events that celebrate the history, culture and art of the West. In the spring, the Whiskey OffRoad Mountain Bike Race, the Whiskey Row Marathon and the Phippen Museum Western Art Show and Sale take center stage. The summer season heats up with Prescott Frontier Days and World’s Oldest Rodeo (celebrating 125 years this summer), Tsunami on the Square performing arts festival, the Prescott Indian Art Market, Prescott Jazz Summit and the Arizona Cowboy Poets Gathering.

Marana Visitors will appreciate the Dove

Mountain area’s unbelievably gorgeous views, upscale dining, and resort ambience as well as hiking and biking trails; Tucson Premium Outlets for designer brands; and Catalina Brewing Co., which has quickly gained a cult following in the community. Li’l Abner’s offers an authentic one-ofa-kind Old West experience that is a favorite with locals – some of whom might be ranchers – who fill the place every weekend.

The Ritz-Carlton

Tucson Premium Outlet

THE TOWN OF MARANA has been the major farming and ranching area for Tucson for hundreds of years. It still has a lot of farmland, ranches and open space, but now Marana is becoming known for its specialty agriculture, which supplies local restaurants and craft breweries with high-end ingredients. If you drink craft beer made in Tucson, it’s likely you are drinking Marana-grown white Sonoran wheat – a 400-year-old variety of wheat that has recently been revived. If you drink Whisky Del Bac, you are drinking barley grown in Marana. When you have a salad at The Ritz-Carlton, Dove Mountain restaurants, the greens are from a specialty grower in Marana.

Because Marana is a growing community with a reputation for top notch farming and beautiful scenery, it is attracting people who want to develop new unique craft breweries and restaurants, and many of the restaurants here serve local craft beer. Quite a few popular restaurants in Tucson have opened second locations here. The one-year-old Tucson Premium Outlets has quickly become a popular shopping destination with visitors from all over the world, and Marana’s surrounding restaurants are waiting to be discovered. The Tucson Premium Outlets is actually located in the middle of the Town of Marana.

Gastropubs and Fine Dining The Dove Mountain neighborhood is about five minutes away from the Tucson Premium Outlets and has upscale dining as well as upscale family-friendly options. The Ritz-Carlton, Dove Mountain is the most highly-rated resort hotel in the state and offers a range of dining choices that are unparalleled in Southern Arizona. Even though it is a five star-rated resort, you do not need to be a guest to dine at any of The Ritz-Carlton’s three main restaurants. Each of The Ritz-Carlton’s restaurants follows French haute cuisine standards and uses the freshest available seasonal and local ingredients. Cayton’s Burger Bistro, at the Golf Club at Dove Mountain adjoining The Ritz-Carlton, is an Americanstyle gastropub famous for its gourmet burgers and milkshakes, and features local ingredients. If you are looking for family-friendly or casual elegance and incredible food, this is the place – and its cuisine and dining experience are presented by The RitzCarlton, Dove Mountain. www.travelhost.com

Ignite is The Ritz-Carlton’s cozy and romantic gastropub lounge. It has an interesting menu, small plates, and features sushi every Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings. In addition to its signature cocktails, it also has locally made craft beer on tap. CORE Kitchen and Wine Bar is The Ritz-Carlton’s elegant contemporary dining room and features the finest cooking and ambience you can find in Arizona.

CORE Kitchen and Wine Bar

The menu changes, offering inspired seasonal experiences of classic cuisine. If you are looking for a contemporary Italian restaurant and wine bar, Vero Amore features upscale Neapolitan food including authentic wood-fired Neapolitan pizza, seafood and meaty pasta dishes, along with extensivVe wine and cocktail selections. Dove Mountain Brewing Co. has well-crafted casual pub fare with an emphasis on local flavors, paninis, sandwiches and sides that pair nicely with beer, such as freshly baked thick pretzels served with special mustards. Li’l Abners Steakhouse is a vintage, one-of-a-kind place dripping with atmosphere as an authentic cowboy and Hollywood hangout from the 1940s, when Marana was the center of dude ranching and filming cowboy movies. It serves mesquite grilled “cowboy style” steak and ribs, cooked over an outdoor open flame, accompanied by salad, ranch-style beans and Texas toast. The rustic atmosphere, with walls and ceiling loaded with memorabilia, tells of the many movie stars, rodeo stars and Western music stars who once passed through. WINTER/SPRING 2017|51

Craft Brewing, Southwest Style

The Ritz-Carlton, Dove Mountain Dining

We are expecting new craft breweries to open in 2017, including one being launched by a brewmaster for one of the bestknown breweries in Tucson.

Catalina Brewing Co. is Marana’s first operating craft brewery and its creative brewmaster, Hank Rowe, showcases Marana-grown ingredients such as mesquite flour in its Mesquite Agave Ale and Twin Pole Mesquite Porter, as well as prickly pear fruit in the La Rosa Cream Ale, which carries the rosy color of the Catalina Mountains at sunset. Pecans grown in the Santa Cruz River Valley are showcased in its Pecan Doppelbock. Catalina Brewing Co. has about 10 signature beers covering a range of tastes: from the Cañada del Oro Blonde Ale to the new Raspberry Chocolate Imperial Stout – as dark and rich as they come. The restaurant’s beer has very layered and wonderful flavors that you will not find anywhere else. The Mesquite Agave Ale is a must to try because it celebrates and elevates the flavors of the Sonora. But why limit yourself ? I recommend tasting each one, because each beer is delicious and unique. Catalina Brewing Co. is tucked away off Ina Road in a small industrial neighborhood that is worth finding. The brewery has

a cafe atmosphere. It is a very welcoming and family-friendly place. There are also two Spanish speakers on staff. Dove Mountain Brewing Co. features dozens of craft beers on tap from breweries all over Tucson and Marana, including Barrio Brewing Co., Borderlands Brewing Co., Catalina Brewing Co., Dragoon Brewing Company, Sentinel Peak Brewing Company, Ten Fifty-Five Brewing, 1912 Brewing Co. and others. The Ritz-Carlton, Dove Mountain has its own signature beer – Ritz-Carlton, Dove Mountain IPA, made by Barrio brewery in Tucson. This special beer is a blend between the Barrio Blanco IPA and the Barrio Grapefruit IPA. The Blanco has a malty understructure and is fermented with hops, providing a crisp but hoppy flavor. The Grapefruit IPA has grapefruit juice added to give it a complex but refreshing flavor. The two blended together create a refreshing flavor and an amazing citrus finish. We are expecting new craft breweries to open in 2017, including one being launched by a brewmaster for one of the bestknown breweries in Tucson.
