Arizona is nick named “The Grand Canyon State” and is home to the Grand Canyon National Park.
The USA Today currently ranks Phoenix’s Sky Harbor Airport as the “Best Airport” in the United States of America. About one-quarter of the state is made up of Indian Reservations.
Arizona ranks as the sunniest state in the U.S., as measured by percentage of sun, total hours of sun and clear days.
The state flower is the Saguaro cactus blossom
The first European documented exploration of the area that comprises the state occurred in 1539 by Marcos de Niza. Yuma, Arizona is the sunniest city in the United States with an annual % average possible sunshine of 90%. A monsoon is traditionally defined as a seasonal reversing wind accompanied by corresponding changes in precipitation. The pop song “Arizona”, written by Kenny Young and performed by former Paul Revere and the Raiders member Mark Lindsay, peaked at Number 10 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 on February 14, 1970. Arizona’s state motto is Ditat Deus (“God enriches”). Arizona became our 48th state on February 14, 1912, the last of the contiguous states to be admitted to the Union. Arizona is home to three of the top four, and four of the top nine, sunniest cities in the United States – Yuma (90%), Phoenix (85%), Tucson (85%) and Flagstaff (78%). The state is home to over 110 wineries, vineyards and cellars. The Willcox wine region produces 74% of the wine grapes grown in the state of Arizona.
The Phoenix-Mesa-Chandler Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) grew by 941,011 people (45.3%) from April 2000 to April 2010 and gained another 382,000 people (estimated) from 2010 to 2015. Humphreys Peak, located about 11 miles north of Flagstaff, is the highest natural point in the state at 12,633 feet. Flagstaff averages 103.6 inches of snow a year, making it the snowiest city in the state. Yuma County produces 90% of the U.S.’s winter supply of lettuce and is the nation’s third largest vegetable producer. Casa Grande soil, the official soil of the state, consists of very deep, well drained soils that formed in old mixed alluvium. Arizona is home to two of the most famous roads in American forklore history – U.S. Route 66 (known as the Will Rogers Highway, the Main Street of America or the Mother Road) and U.S. 80 (“Broadway of America”, Dixie Overland Highway, Ocean to Ocean Highway). Arizona is a right-to-work state. The battleship USS Arizona was named in honor of the state. It was commissioned in 1913 and now rests at Pearl Harbor in Honolulu, Hawaii. State colors are blue and old gold.

This spring, dueling pianists Andreas Kern and Paul Cibis will go head-to-head in contests of flying fingers and searing wit in PIANO BATTLE. Audience members vote on the performances and ultimately determine a winner in this concert which is part serious recital, part tongue-in-cheek competition. Webb Center audiences will be delighted by the sophisticated sounds of the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra in a matinee performance of Big Band hits; legendary jazz pianist Ramsey Lewis and his quintet; and a new Phoenix Symphony pops program. Country music fans will enjoy an acoustic concert by country royalty Rosanne Cash and accompanist John Leventhal as well as The Quebe Sisters’ vintage style of Texas swing and threepart harmony. Comedy this season comes in the form of comedian Tom Papa, who got his big break opening for Jerry Seinfeld.
February welcomes the Webb Center’s fourth annual Find Your Center Gala featuring legendary Broadway vocalist Betty Buckley on February 18. This premier event promises over 100 silent auction items, an open bar, delicious hors d’oeuvres, and a spectacular concert with proceeds benefiting the organization. The Webb Center also hosts fun community events in downtown Wickenburg, such as a free lunch time concert in the park with the US Air Force Band’s Jazz Ensemble, The Commanders. FOUNDED IN 1925 and named after the 30th president of the United States, Coolidge finds its roots deep in cotton country. In fact, Arizona ranks among the top 10 cotton producing states. Today, cotton plays a vital role in the lifestyle and economy of Coolidge along with light and heavy industrial businesses that have flourished. In addition to Coolidge’s farming and industrial roots, the City has world recognition with some of the most talented musicians in history. Legends, Duane Eddy, Jimmy Dell and Waylon Jennings have musical starts in Coolidge. All of these singers have performed on stages across the
United States. Eddy was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Jennings was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. In 2015, The City along with the Coolidge Chamber of Commerce launched a unique partnership. A former elementary school was transformed into an arts and maker space where artisans, technologists and performers come together to further expand their crafts and share those talents with the rest of the community. Famous to the glass world, Anne Nye chose the Artisan Village of Coolidge to showcase her talent and continues her work in one of the many studios on site. In addition, there are two museums and an art gallery located at the Village. The Pinal Gem & Mineral Museum and the Copper State Heritage Museum offer a one of a kind look into the history of Arizona. The Village Gallery also captures the essence of all the creations
within the Artisan Village. Another museum located just a few minutes away from the Village showcases Coolidge’s early history. The Coolidge Historical Museum has many turn of the Century items used in everyday living to farm implements. The museum’s displays take a nostalgic view in time. One of the main centerpieces of Coolidge has a vast impact on early Native American history with the Casa Grande Ruins National Monument. This National Park Service operated site dates back as early as 1350 C.E. Today, visitors can take a step back in time with the preservation of artifacts and farming techniques used during that time. The Casa Grande or ‘Big House’ still stands today, hundreds of years later and its purpose still remains a mystery.

Catalina Brewing Co. is Marana’s first operating craft brewery and its creative brewmaster, Hank Rowe, showcases Marana-grown ingredients such as mesquite flour in its Mesquite Agave Ale and Twin Pole Mesquite Porter, as well as prickly pear fruit in the La Rosa Cream Ale, which carries the rosy color of the Catalina Mountains at sunset. Pecans grown in the Santa Cruz River Valley are showcased in its Pecan Doppelbock. Catalina Brewing Co. has about 10 signature beers covering a range of tastes: from the Cañada del Oro Blonde Ale to the new Raspberry Chocolate Imperial Stout – as dark and rich as they come. The restaurant’s beer has very layered and wonderful flavors that you will not find anywhere else. The Mesquite Agave Ale is a must to try because it celebrates and elevates the flavors of the Sonora. But why limit yourself ? I recommend tasting each one, because each beer is delicious and unique. Catalina Brewing Co. is tucked away off Ina Road in a small industrial neighborhood that is worth finding. The brewery has
a cafe atmosphere. It is a very welcoming and family-friendly place. There are also two Spanish speakers on staff. Dove Mountain Brewing Co. features dozens of craft beers on tap from breweries all over Tucson and Marana, including Barrio Brewing Co., Borderlands Brewing Co., Catalina Brewing Co., Dragoon Brewing Company, Sentinel Peak Brewing Company, Ten Fifty-Five Brewing, 1912 Brewing Co. and others. The Ritz-Carlton, Dove Mountain has its own signature beer – Ritz-Carlton, Dove Mountain IPA, made by Barrio brewery in Tucson. This special beer is a blend between the Barrio Blanco IPA and the Barrio Grapefruit IPA. The Blanco has a malty understructure and is fermented with hops, providing a crisp but hoppy flavor. The Grapefruit IPA has grapefruit juice added to give it a complex but refreshing flavor. The two blended together create a refreshing flavor and an amazing citrus finish.
