A MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR
A
s Mayor of the City of Coolidge, it is my pleasure to welcome you to our city, home of the Casa Grande Ruins National Monument. Coolidge is located in the heart of Pinal County and maintains a key role within one of the largest commerce centers in Arizona, the Sun Corridor. 2018 was a great year and we’ve accomplished a great deal. The city welcomed Nikola Motors manufacturing plant that will produce Hydrogen-electric powered semi-trucks. The company anticipates bringing on a one-billion-dollar capital investment in our area as well as 2,000 jobs by 2025. New home builders, Brown Homes and Wade-Jurney are building new homes in Coolidge. The award winning “United Dance Crew” opened their doors to a renovated building in the downtown area and continues to work with our young dancers. Many Coolidge streets have been replaced, repaired, or renewed. The downtown area is being invigorated
with new streets and a number of buildings remodeled. Pinal County Justice Court and Elections Department have also expanded their buildings within the City. We continue to support our public transit system, airport, and rail service to promote economic development within the “Sun Corridor”. This past year the city council has worked with the Coolidge Chamber of Commerce, Sun Corridor Metropolitan Planning Organization, Central Arizona Governments, Pinal County and other public and private organizations to improve and promote transportation and economic development within our region. Our Public Works Department was awarded the ADOT Partnering Award for the Main Street Project in downtown Coolidge. I invite you to explore Coolidge and the Casa Grande Ruins National monument. See for yourself what our wonderful City has to offer. Jon Thompson Mayor, City of Coolidge

We are dedicated to solving community problems, the reduction of crime, the protection of life and property, and upholding state laws, municipal codes and the constitutional rights of all persons.
To support this mission the police department holds our GAIN (Getting Arizona Involved in Neighborhoods) Night at the Kenilworth Sports Complex in October each year. GAIN is an annual gathering of law enforcement and the community, designed to promote partnerships between citizens and local police, as well as bring awareness to many community service resources available to them, while focusing on the theme of crime prevention. A variety of community partners are present each year, including the Coolidge Fire Department, Coolidge Parks & Recreation, Pinal County Attorney’s Office,

Pinal Hispanic Council, Pinal County Sheriff’s Office, United States Border Patrol, Arizona Department of Public Safety, and many other regional law enforcement, public service organizations and businesses. The public enjoys complimentary hot dogs, bounce houses for the children, and many other giveaways from the vendors. The night culminates in free raffles for prizes and gifts for children and adults, donated from local businesses. GAIN is a great community event for kids to come and play, people to socialize and get to know their law enforcement partners as well as learn about the many resources available to them in Coolidge and Pinal County. Economic Opportunities Are Growing
O
nce a predominately Agricultural based economy, Coolidge is transforming into a mighty industrial powerhouse. Light and Heavy Industry has become one of the major focal points of interest in Coolidge. Companies like Stinger Bridge & Iron, Bright International, Heritage Environmental, and Nikola Motors have laid roots here. Coolidge sits strategically in the Sun Corridor, an area between Phoenix and Tucson, boasting ample land for development and an excellent transportation system. Whether it’s by rail or goods moved along Interstate 8 & 10, Coolidge is poised for superior growth and a city ready to take on the needs of both small and large companies.
Coolidge’s Pro Business Stance
Rick Miller City Manager
The City’s pro business stance accounts for many major industries moving to Coolidge. Nikola Motor Company, a hydrogen-electric vehicle manufacturer, is expected to make a $1 Billion commitment to Coolidge. This company will be producing
clean energy, hydrogen powered semitrucks, capable of driving several hundred miles without a fill up. Coolidge was the chosen location for Nikola because of its readily available location for development and the numerous private/public entities coming together in short order to bring this project forward.
Global Attention to the Area With the addition of Nikola Motors, Lucid Motors, another clean energy producing vehicle manufacturer is making electric vehicles in nearby Casa Grande, AZ. The area known as the Sun Corridor encompasses Pinal County whereby goods and services can easily be delivered through the two major interstates, 8 &10. Lucid and Nikola are two large scale vehicle manufacturers that have seen the potential to the region and are gearing up for rapid production in the next few years.
Coolidge is poised for superior growth and a city ready to take on the needs of both small and large companies

he City is also home to Pinal County’s largest college, Central Arizona College. This two-year educational institution prepares both recent high school graduates as well as those who are looking for a career transition. Their highly focused programs not only help those who wish to further their learning at a 4 year college but also prepare students for the local economy. Programs like heavy equipment operation, welding and medical assisting allow students to readily find a career in their field. In addition to traditional programs, CAC is working with various local industries like Lucid Motors to design a state of the art program. The program works specifically with industries to accommodate their needs to find skilled workers. This prepares students to start work immediately upon graduation. It’s these future thinking education institutions and industry leaders helping to make Pinal County and Coolidge an attractive community to call home.
programs. Career technology education prepares students to enter the workforce immediately after graduation or to pursue further education at a community college or university. Some of the programs at the CAVIT campus include fire science, law enforcement, medical and nursing. CAVIT’s nursing program has been so successful that the department has expanded into a new building allowing more students to enter the program. Excellent education at the elementary to the high school level is also something the community takes seriously. The Coolidge Unified School District operates several schools in the area. In addition, Imagine Schools, a charter school system has planted roots in Coolidge starting with an elementary school in 2007. With its rapid popularity, Imagine has grown into a full K-12 campus in 2011, adding a preparatory building for middle and high school. This commitment by the area residents in quality education symbolizes Coolidge’s goal of training our future leaders of tomorrow.

EDUCATION
ACHIEVE PINAL
A Project of Pinal Alliance for Economic Growth
C Achieve Pinal is working to contribute to the primary goal of Achieve60AZ, which is: Ensuring that 60 percent of Arizonans have a certificate or college degree by the year 2030.
urrently in Arizona, only 43% of adults have education beyond a high school diploma. In Pinal County, only 29% of adults have education beyond high school. In less than five years, nearly 70 percent of jobs will require post secondary education. To be competitive, more workers must be equipped with a post secondary 2- or 4- year degree or a recognized professional certificate. Achieve Pinal began in May of 2017 as a project of the Pinal Alliance for Economic Growth. This regional grassroots effort is dedicated to working with education, government, business and other interested community partners to develop a competitive workforce for future jobs by improving educational attainment in Pinal County. Achieve Pinal is working to contribute to the primary goal of Achieve60AZ, which is: Ensuring that 60 percent of Arizonans have a certificate or college degree by the year 2030. In addition, all actions that will be implemented by Achieve Pinal will support one or more of these four key strategies that have been identified to support the achievement of this critical goal. They are: • Improving the K-12 Pipeline - Increase college readiness and high school graduation rates

•
Completing credentials - Implement policies to make it easier for Arizonans to finish their certificates or college degrees Increasing access - Raise awareness about options beyond high school and make them more affordable Aligning workforce needs - Engage businesses, governments and educators to identify and close the skills gap
Currently, Achieve Pinal is working on developing and implementing College and Career Days for Pinal County High Schools. Business leaders will discuss with students the type of jobs they have, the skill sets they require, what pay and benefits they offer and much more. Implementation of the College and Career Days will begin in February 2019. For more information about Achieve Pinal visit Achievepinal.org.
Pinal Alliance for Economic Growth is a private nonprofit economic development organization serving the interests of large and small businesses as well as local jurisdictions of Pinal County.

Coolidge Transit Cotton Express and Central Arizona Regional Transit Cotton Express Public Transit
The Cotton Express bus system provides Deviated Fixed Route bus service Monday through Friday 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Demand service Monday through Friday 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Reservations must be made 24 hours in advance for the bus to deviate off the route or for demand service. Every year the Cotton Express provides nearly 24,000 passenger trips in the City of Coolidge. Our transit department provides a vital service to the community by giving people an option to ride rather than drive a vehicle. The Cotton Express is funded primarily through the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) 5311 Rural Public Transit Program. Funds are matched by the City of Coolidge. This source of Federal funding makes transit a feasible service to provide to Coolidge residents.

CART – Central Arizona Regional Transit The City of Coolidge began operation of the first regional transit service route in Pinal County in 2010. In 2011 the City of Coolidge, Central Arizona Coolidge, Pinal County and the Town of Florence formed a partnership that became the Central Arizona Regional Transit (CART) system. The CART bus system provides regional route services to neighboring communities for employment, educational medical and personal trips. CART connects Florence, Coolidge, Central Arizona College (CAC), and Casa Grande Monday through Friday 5:05am to 8:30pm. View CART route maps at www.coolidgeaz.com/transit or ridethecart.com.
The CART intercity connector has made travel across the central part of Pinal County possible for people that may have no other means of transportation. This route is heavily utilized by students attending CAC and employees commuting from one community to another for work.

Arizona Career Readiness Credential (ACRC): The ACRC is a major initiative set forth by Governor Ducey in partnership with ARIZONA@WORK and the Office of Economic Opportunity (OEO) that makes the Arizona Career Readiness Credential available to job seekers across the state. This tool prepares job seekers for success by demonstrating their command of seven skill areas that are relevant to every occupation, industry and career pathway across the state. Existing research was coupled with input from hundreds of employers who participated in industry summits and strategy labs to identify three foundational academic skills and four personal and interpersonal skills that form the framework of the Arizona
Career Readiness Credential: • Applied Mathematics • Reading for Information • Workplace Data and Graphics • Communicating Effectively • Teamwork and Collaboration • Professionalism • Critical Thinking and Problem Solving
There are four steps to earning the credential: 1. The initial skills review – an unproctored “snapshot” of current skill levels indicates the job seeker’s readiness for the battery of highstakes assessments. 2. Career Readiness Courseware (CRC) is directly aligned to the three applied academic assessments and helps job seekers prepare for them. It is a self-directed online system with instructional content, formative assessments, learning aids and summative assessments at each level. Job seekers must successfully complete one level before moving on to the next. 3. Employability Skills Courseware helps learners develop and demonstrate attitudes and behaviors that are critical to success at work. This curriculum is suitable for use in either a selfdirected experience or as a series of workshops. It is a critical component of a comprehensive approach to preparing students for success and providing future employers with workplace-ready candidates. 4. The proctored assessments – Successful completion of all the assessments in a controlled, highstakes environment results in the Arizona Career Readiness Credential. AIRPORT INFORMATION
COOLIDGE MUNICIPAL AIRPORT OFFERS MORE THAN TAKEOFFS
T
he Coolidge Municipal Airport is another key part of the City. Once a former military base, the airport has transformed into a general aviation airport with attractive uses. One of those uses is parachute training for various branches of government and NATO allies. Complete Parachute Solutions (CPS) operates a full time training facility at the Coolidge Municipal Airport. This company has steadily grown and recently built additional buildings to its campus to accommodate their rapid growth training schedule.
With surrounding desert and 300 days of sunshine, companies like Boeing and SpaceX have taken advantage of Coolidge’s unique location assisting them with testing their latest innovations. SpaceX, with the help of NASA recently simulated a test of their Dragon parachutes for re-entry into the Earth’s atmosphere. This test proved successful and many observers have taken notice of Coolidge’s advantages for future projects.

GLOBAL ATTENTION TO AREA
S
tinger Bridge & Iron is another company who has recognized Coolidge as being the perfect home. Stinger has expanded their facilities to accommodate some of the biggest projects in America. Stinger was awarded a contract to assist building The Gerald Desmond Bridge in Long Beach, California. At a bridge construction cost of $1.3 Billion, Stinger plays a vital role in helping shape America’s future.
More construction is also starting to take shape in our downtown area. The Pinal County Justice Court began construction on their existing building across from City Hall. Construction is also taking place along Main Street with the County Elections Building and the United Dance Company studio. The dance company recently remodeled one the City owned buildings to the tune of over $100,000. This allows classes and performances to be held in a state of the art center.
Housing has been expanding rapidly starting in 2018. Brown Homes was the one of the first homebuilders to recognize Coolidge as a growing community. WadeJurney is also building new homes in the City. These are just a few examples of the growth Coolidge is a part of.

ARTISAN VILLAGE OF COOLIDGE
IT TAKES A VILLAGE
I
n the Glass Studio you will not only have the opportunity to create your own unique masterpieces, but you will also find one of a kind art to purchase made by local artists. Our “Gallery” boasts not only glass art but paintings, metal art and photography, all created here in the East Valley! Our instructors are volunteers and have nearly 50 years’ experience between them! Mindy Moretz has been manipulating glass since the 70’s. She began building aquariums, and in the 80’s started creating stained glass pieces. The 90’s brought fused glass and for several years Mindy had a retail glass shop and education center in Winter Springs, Florida - near Orlando. In 2010 she moved to Arizona where she continues to create glass art. In 2015 she and her husband started a business creating the Powder Pro Plus, a tool used in fused glass art. That same year she became an instructor at the Village. Debbie Hansen began her journey in art after a 23 year career in banking. Retiring in 1999 to stay home with her teenage son, she began painting furniture and accenting the pieces with glass mosaic. During this time she also began painting in watercolors and oils. In addition, she taught herself how to knit and sold enough knitted scarves one winter to enable her to buy her first kiln, glass saw, and a beginning supply of fusible glass. She hasn’t looked back and continues to make creative and functional pieces of glass art.
for walk-ins beginning at 9:00 am every Saturday morning from October through May. A number of beginner projects are available at reasonable prices. You will be taught how to cut glass, use a glass saw and grinder. You will receive coaching to help you understand the basics of glass fusing, stained glass, or mosaic plus we will assist you in your own unique design. During the summer months, you are always invited to book a class or a party. Glass is a fun way to celebrate birthdays, wedding showers or just a fun night out. We will book classes during the shutdown - just ask!! Learn how to work with copper with Sam Powers, make a rose or your own wall decorations. Go to the Artisanvillageofcoolidge.org website schedule your class.
Although the Glass Studio is not regularly open from June - September, there will be events and classes during the summer shut down, and we will resume our Saturday morning workshops in October. These workshops are available 30 COOLIDGE CH A MBER DIR ECTORY

THE PINAL GEOLOGY & MINERAL MUSEUM
A
rizona has such a unique and fantastic geologic history. A remnant of that history are the rocks, gems and mineral deposits all over the state. Many people have no idea of the richness that lies beneath their feet. To bring that geologic history and the story of the earth in Arizona to life, we dedicate the Pinal Geology and Mineral Museum. Created and maintained by the Pinal Gem and Mineral Society under the guidance of geologist Ray Grant, the museum is telling the story of the earth in Arizona and displaying examples of its mineral beauty. The Pinal Geology & Mineral Museum officially opened its doors in the Artisan Village of Coolidge in 2016. The museum honors the mining and mineral heritage of Arizona that has been part of the cultural fabric for centuries. The displays and permanent collection of Arizona Minerals complements changing exhibits on a variety of earth science subjects.

COOLIDGE HISTORY FROM THE BEGINNING
O
ne woman and three men were instrumental in Coolidge’s growth form a bare desert to a friendly rural town, they were Ida Hurley, Richard J. Jones, Clement Seagoe and Oliver J. Baughn.
COOLIDGE DAM FACTS Opened: 1930 Area: 21 acres Height: 249FT Construction Cost: 10 million USD
40 COOLIDGE CH A MBER DIR ECTORY
Ida Hurley and her husband in 1889 purchased 480 acres of what today is called Baughn Town site, North Coolidge and the original Coolidge town site. In 1919 Richard J. Jones, a businessman in Phoenix, secured 160 acres of land. Knowing the Coolidge Dam would be built, he subdivided and platted his land. In 1920 Clement Segoe purchased 160 acres from E.A. Rose. A Mr. Gilbert built the first house in Coolidge on this property. Mr. Seagoe farmed but was interested in the development of the Coolidge Dam and proposed railroad. On June 2, 1925 he filed his subdivision papers and later filed for three more subdivisions. Oliver J. Baughn came to this are in 1909. He was a superior Court Judge of Pinal County. He purchased 15=60 acres in 1919 east of the R.J. Jones property. He organized and was chairman of the San Carlos Organization. He applied congressional pressure until the San
Carlos Act passed in 1924 and the Coolidge Dam was completed in 1929. The Jones and Seagoes chose the name “Coolidge”, in commemoration of the President whose signature made possible the Coolidge Dam. The Dam was dedicated by Hon. Calvin Coolidge, ex-president, March 4, 1930. The years of 1929 through 1930 were notable by the dedication of the Coolidge Dam, opening of Highway 87, beginning the laying of railroad tracks, printing of the first newspaper, opening of a bank, the forming of many organizations, and the productivity of many acres of cotton. The desert became productive and the city prospered. From the files of the Coolidge Historical Society

esert dwellings changed over time. The earliest types consisted of large oval pits dug several feet into the ground. A brush and pole framework covered the pit, and a layer of mud was applied to the outside. Appropriately, these structures are called “pit houses.” Though pit houses continued to be used, by the 1100’s more permanent, above-ground structures began to be built. Using caliche, a natural concrete-like material found under the top soil throughout this region, they built houses with solid walls and flat, calichecovered roofs. The 1100’s also marked the beginning of several significant

changes. The traditional burial practice of cremation was expanded to include full interment burials. Ball courts were gradually abandoned, and flat-topped, rectangular-shaped earthen structures called platform mounds were built. Villages became more formally organized. Caliche homes were grouped into
caliche-walled compounds, and these compounds were arranged around public plazas and public structures. The Casa Grande was built within one of these compounds and today serves as the main visitation area for the public at Casa Grande Ruins National Monument.

The building of the Casa Grande was a major event of the Classic Period (1100 – 1450 C.E.). The best dating methods available indicate that this large, caliche structure was built during the 1300’s. The construction appears to have been well planned and organized, requiring tons of material and a huge cooperative effort on the part of many people. Today we can only marvel at the Casa Grande and try to imagine what it was used for. Though many theories have been suggested, we still aren’t sure as to its purpose. All we can assume is that the Casa Grande must have been very important to the people who built it. During the late 1300’s and early 1400’s, the ancient Sonoran Desert

people suffered a period of widespread depopulation and abandonment. Speculations as to the cause have included drought, floods, disease, invasion, earthquakes, internal strife, and salinization of farmland. Today, several American Indian groups have ancestral links to the ancient people. Their cultural traditions, together with on-going archeology and the continued interest of visitors at Casa Grande Ruins, all combine to keep the legacy of the ancient Sonoran Desert people alive to this day.
