Kingman Kingman History
K
ingman prehistory belongs to the Patayan (old ones) Culture and their descendants; principally the Hualapai, Havasupai and Mojave tribes. Spaniards explored the area in search of gold as early as the 1500s. In 1857, Lt. Edward Beale’s U.S. Camel Corps located springs near Historic Downtown Kingman while surveying along the 35th parallel for the nation’s first Federally funded wagon road.

Railroad Crossing 1880: Lewis Kingman followed much of Beale Road while surveying for the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad. The railway reached the site of Kingman in March of 1883 and the first train pulled up in October 1883 carrying about 100 passengers. The town of Kingman began growing as people moved in to ranch, mine or set up business to service these growing industries. Kingman became a hub for supplies fed by the railroad. By 1887, Kingman was populous enough to be voted the new Mohave County seat, however the prior seat, Mineral Park, did not concede. According to folklore, a group of Kingmanites stole the county records in the dark of night and brought them to Kingman.
Get Your Kicks!
1926: the highway paralleling the railroad through Kingman was officially certified US Highway 66. The Great Depression brought more than 200,000 people out west on Highway 66 in hopes of finding a new beginning. Route 66 became an essential part of Kingman’s personality.
The Sky’s the Limit 1929: Port Kingman, Arizona State’s first commercial airport, was established and dedicated by Charles Lindbergh and Amelia Earhart as part of the Transcontinental Air Transport Inc., forerunner of TWA. Boulder Dam, as Hoover Dam was called between 1933 and 1947, was dedicated in 1935. That same year, Boulder Dam Kingman Highway (now Highway 93) was completed. Kingman was known as the “Gateway to Boulder Dam”. 1942: the Kingman Army Airfield was opened to train aerial gunners. About 36,000 gunners were trained here during WWII. After the war, many serviceman moved back to call Kingman their home. Kingman Army Airfield is the site of the present Kingman Airport Industrial Park. The former location of the original officer’s quarters is now home to Desert Diamond Distillery. Kingman incorporated soon after the war in 1952.

Kingman & Grand Canyon West
Grand Canyon West This is the location for the world-famous Grand Canyon Skywalk, a glass-floored, horseshoe-shaped suspension bridge that allows those with nerve to peer 4,000 feet down to the canyon floor and the Colorado River below. Built by the Hualapai Nation in 2007, this unique vantage point beyond the canyon walls feels like walking among the clouds. Skywalk has been featured on The Today Show and in a National Geographic documentary. The Culture Trip, one of the globe’s top travel websites, recently recognized Skywalk as one of “The 10 Most Beautiful Skywalks and Viewpoints In The World” for its “exhilarating views” of the canyon.
Wild, Wild West Paid admission to Grand Canyon West includes parking, shuttle transportation between the Hualapai Ranch, Guano Point and Eagle Point scenic overlooks, a visitation certificate, photo opportunities with members of the Hualapai Tribe and self-guided walks through the cowboy-themed Hualapai Ranch and a Native American village. Grand Canyon West offers the only helicopter tours to the bottom of the canyon and a pontoon ride along the Colorado River.
Whitewater rafting the Grand Canyon
Wet & Wild!
For visitors who have whitewater rafting the Grand Canyon on their bucket lists, Hualapai River Runners lets you avoid the years-long wait for rafting slots found elsewhere along the Canyon’s Rim. Hualapai River Runners employs experienced guides ready to take guests on a 40-mile excursion along the mighty Colorado River. This daylong adventure combines the rush of shooting whitewater rapids with a scenic, moderate hike and the serene views of a meandering float along one of America’s most gorgeous rivers. At day’s end, guests finish their journey by helicopter, soaring from the canyon floor to the sky above the rim. Kingman & Grand Canyon West

Opened in 2007
T
he Grand Canyon Skywalk has truly given the most unique perspective of the Grand Canyon. Brace yourself as you walk out over the canyon’s edge, suspended 4,000 ft. (1200 km) above the canyon floor. The completely transparent glass-bottom bridge gives you all the excitement of literally walking the sky, as you traverse over almost 5 inches of glass.
When the Skywalk first opened Two 2-½ inch panels of glass were placed onto one another. However, when the guests would walk over the glass they would hear an eerie screech of the glass creaking and moving, so a plastic buffer was later inserted.

Explore Riverside Drop Into the Canyon by Helicopter for a River Cruise If you are looking for an aerial view of the Grand Canyon, Grand Canyon West can certainly accommodate. If you find this a bit tame for your adventurous heart, then perhaps a helicopter ride, that flies you right into the heart of the canyon, is more to your liking.
The Grand Canyon Skywalk has been awarded several awards, including one of the top observation decks in the world. This world renowned attraction has been providing thrills for those of both the adventurous and curious travelers alike.

Stay Hualapai Ranch
Hualapai Lodge
N
estled on Historic Route 66 between, Seligman, Arizona and Kingman, Arizona. The Hualapai Lodge is located in Peach Springs, Arizona. Peach Springs was established in 1881, when the Atlantic Pacific Railroad made their survey. The name Peach Springs was taken from a spring located a few miles to the north. In 1883, the railroad was built through the village and it grew quite rapidly. The village took on steady growth in the late 1920s as travel on “66” increased. By the 30s and 40s, there were at least 7 gas stations in Peach Springs. ‘The only road to the bottom of the Grand Canyon,’ that coined phrase holds true to this day, Diamond Creek Road is still the only road to the bottom of the Grand Canyon. With your purchase of a Diamond Creek permit, you can drive that road to the river’s edge; or take advantage of our Rendezvous package which includes a night at the Hualapai lodge, a Diamond Creek permit and a lunch to take with you. Visit grandcanyonwest.com or call our reservation center at 928-769-2230.
