your Vigor

I

n the strictest definition of the word “rejuvenate,” it means to make young or youthful again. You can rejuvenate a car, for instance. You can rejuvenate your skin, your body, your health. In the larger sense, though, of rejuvenating your life, you may be seeking a renewed vigor, an ability to drop kick the bad stuff, bring yourself back to center.

The most successful people know that without relaxation and rejuvenation, stress grows and productivity decreases. To get to your peak performance and avoid burnout practice rejuvenation daily. In that regard, we’ve curated a few suggestions from others that can refresh, recharge, restore, revitalize and even perhaps resuscitate your life.

Take a break by finding time for yourself, if only stepping away from something at work or home to clear your mind. Sit on a bench, walk around the block. Get away by taking a day off or taking a mini vacay. If you’re not alone, think ahead and plan so you can keep the atmosphere as free of conflict as possible. Self-care yourself through morning and evening rituals — be it exercising, meditating, reading, writing or saying affirmations. Connect with friends because they are great at distracting you and helping you forget your stress. They’re on your side no matter how you are feeling. Pamper yourself with a long hot bath (bath bombs and essential oils are your go-to add-on) or a day at

the spa. Candles and music go a long way in soothing the savage soul. Stop and reassess your life to figure out what’s making you unhappy and do something about it. Baby steps are fine; it’s about forward progress. Laughing is healing, so do it. Engage others to join you. Practice compassion and help others. This helps both you and the other party. Rein in multitasking by turning off technology when eating meals. Stop for a moment; learn to say “no.” Embrace nature because studies show it improves one’s mental health. Drink plenty of water — all the experts in all fields seem to give this advice.

CHOOSING A FINANCIAL ADVISOR Happy New Year! Many of you may be considering changing or employing a financial advisor. Perhaps you are new to Prescott and looking for an advisor with a hands-on approach. Maybe your portfolio performance has been underwhelming, or your current advisor doesn’t seem to listen. Whatever the reason, there are a few things to consider before moving your money. Read our article on page 24.

F E AT U R E

A

s a new year sweeps into our lives, many people find it a perfect time to learn new habits, develop new routines and adopt new attitudes. One of the keys to help these changes stick can be tweaking your home’s décor and layout so it can nourish your soul and spur you to thrive with your new outlook. INSPIRATION WHEREVER YOU LOOK You probably have at least an idea of which quotes motivate you and others in your family, which colors spark your imagination and which images light a fire under your seat to go to your spin class or art class. Check in with yourself and your housemates to verify what helps everyone get their acts together and proceed with positivity into 2022. If you’re looking for ideas, consider light neutrals or cooler shades of green and blue to create a soothing home to wake up in and come home to, with a contrasting wall or decorative pieces in a more vivid color to recharge your energy. A NOOK FOR EVERYONE Everybody should have a special space they’re able to retreat to for a few moments with a good book or half an hour of meditation and calm. It should be filled with materials, textures and aromas the user will find luxurious and inviting and preferably a ray of natural light for both literal and figurative illumination. There’s no required use for this corner of your world other than for relaxation and rejuvenation. Listen to guided meditations, read spiritual texts, practice your knitting or study a subject you find interesting and challenging. This should be a phoneand screen-free zone, if possible.

DITCH THE NEGATIVE CLUTTER De-cluttering a home can be difficult, but it doesn’t need to be. Just start by throwing anything out that doesn’t make you happy or weighs you down. Yes, this is the KonMari method, but if it makes it easier you can approach it from the opposite of the “spark joy” question — is this object linked in any way to a disappointment or negative experience? Is it the “bronze” medal from a competition where you should have won gold? Pitch it! BUILD FROM NATURE Choose elements of nature that match your style and sensibility. A rugged stone wall can have endless appeal for a hiker or rock climber, while others want luxurious marble counters or a reclaimed wood table for the added benefit of sustainability. LEAVE NO ROOM BEHIND Don’t forget about that dark spare room or dated bathroom you tend to avoid because there’s just isn’t anything drawing you in — that space will still weigh on you as an unfinished task and a barrier to full enjoyment of your home. Try using some reflective surfaces to boost that room’s natural lighting or refurbishing the shower to add a more spa-like vibe.

THE RIGHT

Financial Advisor:

appy New Year! Years of experience: as with any craftsman, techniques improve over time. You want to make sure your advisor has been in the business long enough to have weathered the inevitable ups and downs of the market. You can also get recommendations from trusted contacts. Word-of-mouth is still the best marketing tool in the financial industry. Have clear expectations: as with any service-lead profession, setting and communicating your expectations is essential. One of the main reasons people leave their advisors is because they don’t feel heard. Make sure you set goals with your advisor and that they understand what you are looking to do.

24

Northern A Z Luxur y L iving WINTER 2022

Be upfront about fees: whether it’s commission-based, fee-based, or fee-only, as an investor, you have the right to know about the cost of your investments. Don’t be afraid to ask! A good advisor will display trust and transparency. Check the Advisor’s Licenses: it’s good to know the difference regarding what types of certifications are held by your advisor. The Series 7 is the gold standard of licensing. Administered by FINRA (Financial Industry Regulation Authority), it gives an advisor the ability to sell stocks, bonds, options, futures, and packaged securities. It also provides the advisor with a broad knowledge base of the industry. Products: what exactly is the advisor recommending? Believe it or not, it matters. Whether you are looking to purchase stocks or an annuity, you want to make sure your advisor has the best type of investments and that the recommendation aligns with your needs and financial goals. At Schott Financial Management, we offer free, no-obligation consultations. You can call our office, 928-776-1031 or visit www. schottfinancialmanagement.com. IN AN INFRARED SAUNA 26

Northern A Z Luxur y L iving WINTER 2022

F E AT U R E

S

aunas have been used for thousands of years to provide humans relief from aches and promote relaxation throughout the body through the production of dry heat from stoves or hot rocks, with the room reaching up to 200 degrees. They’re found at gyms, resorts, wellness centers and private homes, especially in Finland, where there’s the equivalent of one sauna per home. The infrared sauna is a slightly less hot alternative that has shot up in popularity over the last decade or so; its heat comes from infrared lighting, which gradually heats your body directly, rather than by heating the air around it. This is a big benefit for people who can’t tolerate the more intense heat produced by traditional saunas but want the same benefits. The heat from any type of sauna increases your heart rate, dilates your blood vessels and triggers profuse sweating — the same reaction your body has to low- to moderate-intensity exercise. Your skin temperature can reach 150 degrees, but your core body temperature will not increase by as much as in a traditional sauna. Many users report they have a mood-boosting effect. Many positive health benefits have been attributed to infrared saunas. Researchers have found some of these claims debatable, but most agree your physical health will see some gains as a result of the 30- to 60-minute sweat sessions available at spas offering this service including some in Sedona, Prescott, Prescott Valley and Flagstaff. These saunas can be helpful with: • Pain reduction — Several studies have found time spent in infrared saunas can reduce inflammation and pain in those who have rheumatoid arthritis.

• Heart health — Rigidity in blood vessels, known as arteriosclerosis, is one of the major risk factors for heart disease because it forces the heart to pump harder to circulate blood throughout your circulatory system. Sessions in an infrared sauna are believed to soften arterial walls and lower blood pressure, possibly due to a reaction between the infrared heat and the water in human tissue. • Skin health — The heat of these saunas forces your pores to open, which can allow dirt, dead cells, oil and other debris to be carried away by your perspiration. • Detoxing — This is probably the most common benefit claimed by those trying to sell us on the advantages of infrared saunas, and some impurities can be released from the body through our sweat, but not to the degree advocates claim. The heavy-duty detoxing our body is capable of is handled by the kidneys and the liver. Exercise can also play a role by burning fat and the toxins it contains, but perspiration alone won’t do the job. In-home infrared spas can be purchased, as well as blankets that mimic some of their effects. Their use poses little to no risk for healthy people, though overuse can lead to dehydration and overheating. Anyone who has heart, kidney or another preexisting disease, takes medication, has low blood pressure or has high or low sensitivity to heat should consult their physician before using any infrared sauna.

ULTIMATE LUXURY: A Home Massage Therapy Room

W

hen the chill of a Northern Arizona winter day sets in, many of us just want to cocoon in the luxurious warmth of our homes, even if that means missing out on some of our favorite personal services. While the explosion of Zoom and other online technology has made it much easier to replicate many of those luxuries in the home, some just don’t translate. Massage therapy is perhaps the ultimate example of this conundrum — it smooths out the physical and emotional tension throughout your body but requires those same tired muscles to struggle with weather-beaten traffic and icy sidewalks to reach your relief. Converting a closet or creating a new space to serve as your personal massage room is clearly the best solution. It just takes a little effort to create the right environment for your at-home sessions. • The room — It should be intimate and free from distractions, so to accommodate a massage table, yourself, your therapist and any equipment without seeming too big it should be no larger than about 150 to 200 square feet. A windowless room with dimmable lighting is best.

28

Northern A Z Luxur y L iving WINTER 2022

• The table — The dimensions of your ideal table will depend both on your size and that of the therapist you will be working with. The most luxurious platforms will be padded with 3 or more inches of foam and fully electric with an internal heater; some high-end tables are filled with warm sand or other alternative materials. • The sights — Soothing, earthtoned neutrals are preferable for the walls, which can be adorned with one or two simple drawings or wall hangings made of such natural materials

as dried plants, rocks or shells. A cozy rug can cushion feet and any stray noises. • The sounds — A small but high-quality set of speakers, either placed in the room or embedded in the walls, can play relaxing new age or classical music to soothe your mind and mask any ambient noise that leaks through the walls. • The smells — If you have found aromatherapy is effective for you, use candles or diffusers to bring healing scents into the room.

Bring NatureInside TO BALANCE YOUR WELL-BEING

“Study nature, love nature, stay close to nature. It will never fail you.” — Frank Lloyd Wright

A

s the father of organic architecture, which strives to design and build structures in balance with their natural surroundings (think house not on a hill but as part of that hill), some would say Frank Lloyd Wright sparked today’s biophilic design. This growing architectural trend brings nature inside. It connects humans to the nature they love. Studies show that even looking at nature can have a calming effect. Biophilic architects take that further by designing buildings — even skyscrapers in the form of vertical gardens — by incorporating elements of nature to impact the way people feel, work and create. Bringing nature inside has been shown to boost productivity and reduce stress in offices, hospitals, schools and in urban living spaces. It can be restorative physically and emotionally, lowering blood pressure and heart rate. And since 93% or our time is spent indoors or in our cars, finding a way to bring nature into your living environment may be just what you need.

Consider taking these steps to create your own nature-based nirvana: • Blend organic forms (rocks and plant shapes for instance) with water features and outdoor views. Find a way to let in lots of natural light. • Bring in real plants. • Make subtle changes in temperature and air flow through your heating and cooling system. • Use plant oils in a diffuser and surround yourself with calming sounds. Perhaps nature sounds? • Use patterns that mimic nature in curtains, pillows, wall hangings or flooring. Incorporate nature’s colors and textures like wood and stone.

Revitalize YOURSELF

AT A WELLNESS RETREAT

Santa Monica Mountains

T

F E AT U R E

he dawn of a new year is a time for reinventing yourself by letting go of the habits, relationships and priorities that just aren’t working for you anymore. It’s a time for redefining your life by what makes you happy and healthy. Most of us are able to accomplish this with some self-reflection and the right wellness activities and classes. How much easier, though, would it be to reset if you removed yourself from your daily routine to a luxurious yet challenging hideout to focus on you, either by yourself or with a couple of choice friends? Here are a few of the most lavish, distinctive and high-end retreats for an unbeatable New Year’s wellness journey. THE RANCH, MALIBU, CALIFORNIA This is for those looking for a knockout, boot-camp experience. Its stunning setting on the Pacific doubtlessly is what keeps many of its guests going through a nonstop, “no-options” regimen that includes a 1,400-calorie, nutrientdense vegan diet and a daily 4-hour hike through the 200-acre property in the Santa Monica Mountains. Focused on weight loss, muscle gain, mental clarity and establishing sustainable healthy habits, the core 7-day program includes fitness classes, massage, yoga, a cooking demonstration, wellness discussions and diagnostic testing. Its 19 restful cottages are beautifully decorated and TV-free. www.theranchmalibu.com BLACKBERRY MOUNTAIN, WALLAND, TENNESSEE Expanding on the legacy of the Blackberry Farm hotel’s presence in the Great Smoky Mountains, this smaller retreat infuses wellness into every stay with culinary and outdoor adventures and stellar hospitality. Accommodations include multi-bedroom homes, cabins and even a few treehouses! It comes with an extensive list of optional adventures and services: Restorative facials? Check. Yoga in

the forest? Check. A nervous system reset? Cardio barre class? Got ‘em. Three restaurants serve a huge variety of healthy, seasonal fare based on local and foraged ingredients. www.blackberrymountain.com MIRAVAL AUSTIN, AUSTIN, TEXAS This property in the hills overlooking Lake Travis encourages guests to craft a personalized “journey with intention” based on one specific need or however many they want to fulfill during their stay. Potential paths with suggested itineraries focus on fitness, mental well-being, leadership skills, outdoor adventures, spa experiences and more. All rooms offer quintessential Miraval amenities such as in-room meditation channels, a meditation cushion and Tibetan singing bowl, “cloud-like” bedding and filtered water. Culinary experiences revolve around its onsite Cypress Creek Farm with its organic produce and eggs, herbs and introductory classes in chicken keeping and beekeeping. www.miravalaustin.com SENSEI LANAI, A FOUR SEASONS RESORT, LANAI CITY, HAWAII This luxury wellness enclave is set back from the beach in the mountains of the already-secluded island of Lanai, engendering true relaxation at a resort with customized data-based wellness consultations, mindset counseling, spa treatments, fitness classes and exciting on-island adventures. All accommodations are suffused with natural light and outfitted with Dyson hair dryers and top-tier toiletries. Its wellness journeys are based on the Sensei Way philosophy and offers 120-minute spa experiences, private spa treatments in a secluded hale, an 18-hole golf course, horseback riding, snorkeling and an adventure park with rope challenges, zip lines and more. here are more than 2 million diamonds for sale at any given time — what separates them is color, clarity, cut and carat. Most importantly, though, is what you want in this gemstone that dates back 3,000 years to India. While it’s unlikely yours will be on display such as the 45.5-carat Hope Diamond in the Smithsonian (valued at $350 million) or the 105.6-carat Koh-i-Noor Diamond on view in the Jewel House at the Tower of London (priceless), yours can be just as valuable in its own way. A small diamond with just the

TAKES THOUGHT & HEART

right color, clarity, cut and carat can have value beyond measure when chosen thoughtfully and lovingly. In doing so, follow these steps: • Understand the 4Cs of quality (the aforementioned color, clarity, cut, carat) • Choose a jeweler wisely • Insist on a diamond grading report • Protect you purchase with an appraisal and insurance

WINTER 2022 Northern A Z Luxur y L iving

37

LIFEST YLE

Color. Most diamonds have an absence of color, but they can come in shades of brown, blue, orange, pink and gray. Some experts say the less color in the stone, the more valuable it is. Clarity. This measures the amount, size and placement of internal inclusions — small imperfections created through the extreme pressure and heat that diamonds experience when forming — and external blemishes. Grades run from flawless to included, which contain a number of imperfections. Cut. This does not refer to shape but to the proportion and arrangement of a diamond’s facets and quality of workmanship. Grades range from excellent

38

Northern A Z Luxur y L iving WINTER 2022

to poor. Cut determines brilliance, sparkle and fire. Carat. This is the weight of the diamond, and usually the higher the carat weight the more expensive the diamond. However, two diamonds of equal carat weight can be of different quality and price depending on the other Cs. Along the search for your perfect diamond, you might want to consider earthcreated versus lab-grown and readymade versus bespoke. Diamonds grown in a lab are generally about 30% more affordable because fewer resources are employed to create them compared to the mining process. They are just as good. Depending on your jeweler, a diamond used

in an original creation doesn’t necessarily mean it’s more expensive than one already in a jeweler’s case. Do your research. When all is said and done, though, and all the guidance considered, what you really want is brilliance reflecting, refracting and dispersing light in the way that matters to you. After all, Buddhist texts dating to the 4th century mention the use of diamonds and their refracted light to ward off evil when worn as talismans. And in the Early Middle Ages they were ingested to cure some illnesses. Fortunately for today’s world, a Hungarian queen in 1074 A.D. decided a diamond in her crown was just the thing.

rganizing O Clothes New Again YOUR WARDROBE MAKES

A

by Michelle Beck, Owner, Purple Clover Boutique

s a new year sets in, many of us made resolutions on how we will be better, kinder, healthier, and high on that list is to be more organized! One of the areas many of us need help in is organizing our wardrobe. With some creativity and inspiration you can take what you already have in your closet and make those items new again. PURGE YOUR CLOSET The first step to revamping your wardrobe is to get rid of anything and everything you no longer need. Everyone has some pieces of clothing they keep going back

40

Northern A Z Luxur y L iving WINTER 2022

to; others just lie in the closet waiting to be worn someday. We convince ourselves that day will come when in reality we are very aware it won’t. Take everything that doesn’t fit to a resale shop or donate it. If something needs alterations, invest in a good seamstress. This provides space for what you truly love and actually will wear. INVEST IN STAPLES An important step in revamping your wardrobe is to rethink your choice of clothes. Sometimes we get carried away and purchase items that are trendy at the moment but do not stand the test of time.

We fall victim to these purchases because they are inexpensive and perceived as a “good buy.” If you truly want to up your fashion game, abstain from this practice. Look for staple pieces. These are clothes that have a timeless value because of color or style. Think of the perfect white T-shirt, well-fitting denim, a cashmere sweater and a coat that you love. Invest in items that have longevity, are effortless and will work hard for you season after season. USE YOUR ACCESSORIES Accessories change the look of your wardrobe staples by adding color, a theme or simply wearing your clothing in new ways. Handbags, scarves and jewelry are a girl’s best friend to add interest to your outfit! Learn about all the different ways you can use a scarf. Don’t just tie one around your neck — use a longer scarf as a belt or a sarong. Take a shorter scarf and use it as a hair accessory or even wear it on your wrist. Rethinking and reusing what we already have is a great way to start the new year! Add a few items from one of your favorite local boutiques and you are ready to face 2022 in style.

f making coffee and/or tea is part of your daily routine, and we know that covers a whole lot of you, we highly recommend making this part of your life much simpler by bringing all of your implements and supplies together — in your kitchen or as close as you can get to it. Making these beverages is something that shouldn’t take up much of your valuable time, so find the right machinery to create that hot cuppa whatever you please, keep your powder, beans and leaves dry in airtight containers and store your cups, add-ons and stirrers in whatever orderly fashion makes you smile! THE LOCATION A section of your counter with adequate cabinet space above and below is usually the ideal option, but if it’s not doable you can have lots of fun finding a vintage cabinet or chest to set up in the kitchen or dining room to house your coffee station, or a sleek cart if you’re looking for portability. THE HEAT Whatever your favorite warm beverage happens to be there’s going to be some heating involved, whether it’s by placing a kettle on a stove or switching on the super-automatic grinding/brewing/ frothing coffee/espresso/tea machine for which you paid thousands. Your preference will probably depend on how important the process of making your drink is to you. Many people find it a soothing, meditative ritual and aren’t looking for automation; placing your kettle, filters, grinders and caffeine sources near the stove or microwave may be all you need to do. Those who want their daily jolts served ASAP with minimal fuss have a lot of options to sift through that fall into two basic categories: countertop

appliances, many of which lend awesome industrial-goth vibes to kitchen décor, or built-in machines that conceal all those levers and the machines they operate in a cabinet for a minimalist look. THE FUEL Keep all your coffee beans, tea leaves and their derivatives in sealed, labeled containers for the highest quality and convenience. Both tea and coffee last the longest when stored in cool, dry, dark spaces like a drawer, cabinet or pantry, but can be stored in darker counter spaces when they’re in opaque containers. If you have larger quantities of either try keeping most of it in the pantry and storing a week’s worth or so at your drink station. THE MUGS A row of white cups lined up on a dedicated shelf over your machines can be very calming and consistent, while mugs of all shapes and sizes has the opposite effect by energizing the entire space. In lieu of hiding them in a cupboard you can install hooks to hang them on or find a graceful mug tree or two. THE ADD-INS Keep strainers, coffee spoons, stirrers, infusers and other miscellany together in your prettiest mug, tin or basket. Put frequently used sweeteners, spices, lemons and other flavor enhancers in their own basket or, when it comes to perishables, in a nearby refrigerator, either your primary full-sized one or, better yet, a mini fridge tucked underneath the counter for milk and creamer, whipped cream and other delights!

Plan your Landscape by Josh Crothers, Owner, Prescott Landscape Professionals

s we settle into the winter months in the Central Highlands, it’s the perfect time to plan ahead and make changes to your landscape. How about replacing overgrown shrubs and trees or adding a new water feature? Maybe you’ve been thinking about new pavers for an old concrete patio? It’s never too early to have professional landscapers come and help you with your vision for a yard that fits your home and lifestyle. I tell people that the perception

This Winter

that landscapers don’t work too hard during the winter months isn’t true. We’re busy helping clients with clean-up, winter pruning and planning for the warm months ahead. It’s the perfect time to redesign your yard and plant new trees. Winter is also a time to check in on the health of your trees and plants around your yard. When your trees go dormant, particularly evergreens, it’s also a great time to prune them so they’re lush

and blooming in the spring. Landscapers will tell you the best way to stimulate a plant to grow is to cut it back — and sometimes way back. Fruit trees in particular thrive on being pruned and eliminating the upright shoots. If you wait until spring, you may cause excessive loss of sap and it can lower fruit yields. Pruning can be tricky, so it’s best to hire the experts so your landscape will be alive and well this spring!

HOW TO MAKE A

Timely Impression

Northern A Z Luxur y L iving WINTER 2022

S

o many things make the man. But let’s zero in on their luxury side. Arbiters of high fashion say the businessman needs to show what he’s made of before ever uttering a word. To do this, he must have an opulent timepiece, a designer wallet, justso cufflinks and the perfect pen. These luxurious tools can take him from that first-impression handshake to dancing with the boss’s daughter at the grand gala to tipping the doorman to signing his name. Others will see that details, elegance and quality mean something to him. If life is still more Zoom meetings than elevator pitches, the clever guy will find a way to subtly put that watch, cufflink or pen in the viewing screen. Maybe even the wallet. For wallets, think slim line to eliminate pocket bulge. Montblanc is a brand that comes to mind, as it does when speaking of impeccable pens. Here consider the fountain pen — the writing tool of the ages. A weighty feel of an instrument for weighty matters. As for cufflinks, head to Cartier and then match them up with a dress shirt and tuxedo for a powerfully irresistible look. Beyond the wallet perhaps, the bonus to any cost in these luxury items can come in the form or investment and/or future heirlooms. Let’s talk watches. Your smartphone just can’t compare to the statement of a Cartier, Rolex or Patek Philippe timepiece. It’s a thing for athletes, movie stars, millionaires and billionaires, and royals to wear and collect watches whether pilot, dive, field or dress watches. Just for fun — a Cartier watch can cost between $2,740 and $212,000; a Rolex goes from $5,000 to $650,000 plus; and Patek Philippe’s are priced from $15,000 to $1 million plus.

LIFEST YLE

The Patek Philippe 1518 in stainless steel collector’s watch, released in 1941, is $11 million. The collector’s Rolex Daytona 6263 Oyster Albino, released in 1971, goes for $4 million. Take a breath, as needed, stylish watches on SenseOrient are priced less than $1,000. Once you’ve got the big four figured out, here are four other luxury items to consider: • Dress boots — Offering style, durability and versatility, these are worth the price. • Quality cashmere sweater — Especially appreciated in our neck of the woods. • A signature scent — Good ones can be expensive. Check out the oils within. • A luxury mattress — This is a choice for good health. Last, but certainly not least, you need a good tool chest for your time out of the office. We’re not talking plastic or steel here. Oh no; we’re thinking a pear or walnut wood Swiss-made tool cabinet from Wood and Luxury by Stefan Senn. This tool case offers a triptych construction with centerpiece and two unfolded wings. It is equipped with tools from Switzerland, Germany and Japan. It goes for around $50,000.

THE ULTIMATE IN LUXURY AND NUTRITION

ost high net-worth families are used to dining in the most elegant and exclusive restaurants at home and around the world. Some of them have taken the next step into self-care and selfindulgence by bringing a personal chef into their household. This role is filled by a skilled culinary professional able to fill their employer’s daily and entertaining needs, often tailoring recipes to each family member’s nutritional needs as well as their taste buds. Those with food allergies or sensitivities can especially benefit from this, but anyone who seeks a more nutritionally balanced diet can see dramatic improvements in how they feel and function. A personal chef may be shared with several families, often coming in on a particular day or days of the week to prep

50

Northern A Z Luxur y L iving WINTER 2022

meals for the next several days, while a private chef is retained exclusively by one household to prepare up to three meals a day, and their own housing might be part of their compensation. Chefs and cooks able to meet this job description are rare talents in the kitchen but also know how to source the highestquality ingredients, deal with varied family schedules, manage any other kitchen staff, handle plating and tablescaping for special occasions and partner with a nutritionist when needed. Most often, such chefs are simply found via Google, by client referrals, through placement agencies and professional groups including the American Private and Personal Chef Association or the U.S. Personal Chefs Association. A few pointers for hiring a personal or private chef:

• Lay out your expectations for having a chef regarding you or your family’s personal preferences, dietary requirements, desire to sample different cuisines, your frequency and level of entertaining, whether you want the chef to travel with you or feed your pets and other lifestyle choices. • Learn about your potential hire’s background, experience, their passions within the culinary field and their ability to work with others on your staff or medical providers. • Ask them to provide sample menus based on your palate, health concerns, preferences for entertaining, etc.

Meet your Ideal Spa Treatment

Y

ou’re finally on the way to that top-echelon destination spa you’ve been dreaming of — but now you have to select which treatments you want out of the dozens of heavenly options on the menu. How do you decode the descriptions to discover which services will be worth your investment? Some of the most exclusive spas give you the opportunity to speak to staff who will discuss your goals for your spa experience. When your spa of choice offers this level of service take advantage. Still, it’s good to have a basic vision of the end result you seek. First, check in with yourself to know exactly why you’re choosing to go to a high-end spa. Do you simply want to take some time for yourself

to feel pampered and cared for, or is there a specific issue you want to address, whether it’s a cluster of age spots on your arm or a tension in your shoulders that never quite goes away? A full-service spa offers massages, facials, skin treatments, hydrotherapy and aromatherapy. Many host fitness classes and may provide food and nutrition counseling. Do some research on how each of these types of therapy work and what troubles they address. Keep your expectations realistic. There are specialized treatments within each category. Take massage, the most popular and broadest of all treatment categories. Here are offerings from a few top-tier Arizona spas to illustrate the contrast between types.

WELLNESS SWEDISH MASSAGE This classic form of massage uses a gentle touch during a full-body treatment, addressing tension and promoting relaxation. Many outlets call these “relaxation massages,” including Sedona Amara Spa in Sedona: “Utilizing long, fluid strokes, this classic Swedish massage relieves muscle tension and improves circulation creating a sense of calm inner peace and serenity,” according to its website. HOT STONE MASSAGE The masseuse uses warm stones to increase blood flow and alleviate pain, sometimes alternating them with cold stones. These are ideal for those dealing with pain or heightened tension in specific parts of their body. The Well & Being Spa at the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess Resort’s signature services include the Himalayan Salt Stone massage, described as a

58

Northern A Z Luxur y L iving WINTER 2022

“restorative massage (that) uses warm stones to soothe sore muscles and naturally replenish the body with vital minerals, restoring balance and removing toxins.” DEEP TISSUE MASSAGE These involve deeper, more forceful strokes and are designed to address chronic pain, injuries and tight muscles from anxiety. While more forceful, they should not cause pain or discomfort. L’Apothecary Spa at L’Auberge de Sedona explains: “Deep tissue massage focuses on realigning deeper layers of muscles and connective tissue. The techniques used are performed slower and the pressure is deeper to ensure concentration in areas of tension.” CRANIOSACRAL MASSAGE This treatment requires a light touch as the masseuse explores the membranes and movement of fluid around the central nervous

system and aids the release of the fascia, or connective tissue that surrounds internal organs. It may improve chronic pain, migraines, multiple sclerosis and other neurological conditions. The Spa at Canyon Ranch in Tucson says: “This soothing treatment adjusts the subtle rhythm of the cerebrospinal fluid as it circulates around the brain and spinal cord. … This encourages optimal fluid movement throughout the body. The result is a deep sense of calm.” AROMATHERAPY This combines the light touch of Swedish massage with the emotional healing provided by soothing scents from essential oils or other sources. At the Omni Scottsdale Resort and Spa at Montelucia, aromatherapy is offered as an “enhancement,” with three Lotus Wei massage serums infused with flowers and essential oils to choose from.

What is A

Plasma Fibroblast SKIN TIGHTENING?

by Roxie Reece, Owner & Licensed Aesthetician Plasma Specialist, Studio ROX

re you looking to remove loose saggy skin, rewind the visible signs of aging and remove/diminish fine lines and wrinkles without the pain of invasive high cost treatments? Plasma fibroblast skin tightening treatments (also known as “soft surgery”) are a non-invasive, nocontact and painless procedure using the top of the line approved Plasma Pen device. This device delivers skin resurfacing, tightening and rejuvenation results that last for years.

WHY THIS TREATMENT? With plasma fibroblast skin tightening there are no incisions, injections, stitches or general anesthetics involved. The results are instant, and the risks and downtime are minimal. HOW THIS SKIN TIGHTENING TREATMENT WORKS? In this instance, plasma is a state of matter called nitrogen. Nitrogen plasma energy is channeled through the tiny tip at the end of the plasma device. This energy transfers to the skin’s epidermal layer, where it also creates heat and tiny micro traumas that stimulate skin’s deeper dermal structure where the fibroblasts exist. This micro-trauma affects the superficial epidermis, as well as a deeper

60

Northern A Z Luxur y L iving WINTER 2022

zone within the dermis — particularly the fibroblasts. The job of fibroblasts is to simply communicate with and stimulate the building of collagen. WHAT IS THE SCIENCE BEHIND THE PLASMA PEN TECHNOLOGY? The special fractional and permeating tips of the Plasma Pen work to evenly distribute plasma at a lower temperature over a wider area; while the pen nanoprobes deliver concentrated nitrogen plasma gas non-invasively to the epidermal layer of the skin. The results are almost instant, and in many cases will last up to 5-10 years or more. WHAT IS YOUR TREATMENT DAY? This is a same-day procedure with topical numbing. Each client receives a custom pattern of dot formations unique to their personal goal. Each dot addresses both the loose sagging skin as well as fine lines and wrinkles. The treatment can address upper eyelid lift, under eye lift, jowl lift, neck lift, eyebrow lift, full mouth and lip flip, removal of moles, skin tags stretch marks, acne scars, texturing, creping skin and more. The average session can take anywhere from three to five hours including numbing time. Plasma skin tightening is a painless procedure comparable to that of healing a mild sunburn.

Red Light Therapy

CAN HELP YOUR SKIN

WELLNESS

R

ed light therapy has been gaining a foothold in the world of skin care as clients and researchers report its effectiveness at stimulating your body’s production of collagen, hyaluronic acid and elastin. This in turn can reduce fine lines and wrinkles, calm mild to moderate acne and fade the appearance of scars. It’s believed this happens when red light penetrates the skin and triggers a chemical reaction that strengthens the mitochondria, or energy source, that’s found within each cell. This prompts the cells to more actively repair and regenerate themselves, leading to a rejuvenated skin surface. Red light therapy differs from laser or intense pulsed light treatments because it’s believed to directly interact with skin cells and doesn’t cause the controlled abrasions the other procedures create to spur the skin to regenerate itself. This makes it an especially good choice for those with sensitive skin. It also does not contain harmful UV rays. The procedure is performed in dermatologists’ offices and salons, and at-home devices also are available, though the rare side effects of burns and blistering are more likely to happen with a DIY product. Red light therapy is also known by several other names including lowlevel laser therapy (LLLT), soft laser therapy and photobiomodulation (PBM). Some of the skin conditions it can alleviate include: • Skin laxity/wrinkles/fine lines — Small studies have reported a decrease in these signs of aging and/ or sun damage due to the heightened collagen production. A 2019 study published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology

found red light and LED laser light therapy led to higher production of collagen and elastin within one week of the beginning of treatments. • Acne — Red light is often used in conjunction with blue light to treat inflammatory acne. The red light calms inflammation and speeds healing while the blue light, which has a shorter wavelength, causes a reaction that kills bacteria on the skin’s surface. • Scarring — Red light’s ability to stimulate collagen production and creation of new blood vessels can reduce the appearance of scars by covering up the abnormal healing process that creates the scarring in the first place. • Alopecia — Both male and female pattern baldness, as well as chemotherapy-induced hair loss, have responded well to the use of red light for re-energizing growth in hair follicles that have not been scarred over. The activated mitochondria produce adenosine triphosphate (ATP), each cell’s energy source, more efficiently to activate hair growth. • Psoriasis and eczema — Both of these skin-related chronic conditions, neither of which has a cure, create dry, scaly and itchy skin patches that have been reduced after the use of red light therapy, which improves healing through stimulating blood flow through new capillaries. For psoriasis in particular, it’s best to cons.

DON’T NEGLECT YOUR

W

Décolletage

by Aymee Wilson, Owner & Founder, Wilson Aesthetics

hen taking care of the skin, you must remember to focus on your face and also give your neck and chest much care. Unless you want to look older than your age, you need to take care of this area because it’s one of the first areas to show signs of aging. WHERE IS YOUR DÉCOLLETAGE? It can be found south of your chin, and the beauty industry refers to it as your neck and chest. This part of the body is prone to sun exposure and premature aging. This area is also a common hotspot for skin cancers to develop. Sun exposure, especially repetitive, intense bursts, can result in collagen breakdown. It can also lead to brown spots and visible blood vessels, which are the tell-tale signs of skin damage. MAKE YOUR DÉCOLLETAGE LOOK YOUNGER Getting a dose of sunshine every day is a great way to boost your mood and also increase vitamin D. However, getting too much sun exposure can damage your skin and increase your chances of getting skin cancer. Plan activities that allow you to stay in the shade most of the time. APPLY BROAD-SPECTRUM SUNSCREEN DAILY The ideal sunscreen must have SPF

66

Northern A Z Luxur y L iving WINTER 2022

30 or higher, and also it should be waterproof — applying sunblock with zinc and titanium because these active ingredients will work immediately after the application. GENTLE CLEANSING A MUST Avoid scrubbing this area during your cleansing routine. Scrubbing too hard can irritate this delicate skin area and accelerate aging. Instead of rubbing, gently apply cleanser using clean fingertips. WEAR CLOTHES THAT PROVIDES SHADE Wear a wide-brim hat. You also need to wear clothes that would cover your chest. If you decide to exercise in the sun, you need to wear athletic

clothing with an ultraviolet protection factor of at least 30. CONSULT YOUR DERMA ASAP! If you spot signs of sun damage and advanced signs of aging on the skin of your neck and chest area, consult a licensed dermatologist. A dermatologist can use treatments that will improve the appearance of your décolletage. Your dermatologist can use treatments like micro-needling, laser therapy or chemical peels. Some dermatologists use injectables that are effective in stimulating the skin’s collagen. Sculptra Aesthetic, for example, is an injectable cosmetic filler that may help you in making your décolletage look younger.

WELLNESS

I

f you want a younger appearance but fear getting a facelift because of the surgery or cost involved, you might want to consider a thread lift. Around since the 1990s, innovations in the material used have prompted more interest in this anti-aging method. If you’re in good health between your late 30s to early 50s and noticing signs of aging, this tightening method could be right for you. The procedure lasts one to three years while a facelift lasts up to a decade. By threading thin, dissolvable sutures under the skin, your doctor pulls the skin to alter the shape of features such as lips, nose, eyebrows, cheeks and the under-eye area. This procedure also has been used to tighten breasts after pregnancy and weight loss. In a traditional facelift, loose facial skin is surgically removed. Basically, invisible, painless “barbs” grab on to your skin and make sure that the thread grips your underlying tissue and muscles as the thread is pulled tight. Once inserted, the thread triggers your body’s healing process. That is, your body detects a suture material and stimulates collagen production in the affected area. Collagen fills the gaps in sagging skin. There are different threads, including nonbarbed ones, depending on the outcome you seek. The thread lift may be combined with other, more minor surgical procedures, such as Botox, injectable fillers, Ultherapy, microneedling or skin resurfacing lasers. Afterward, pain usually can be managed with acetaminophen and/or ibuprofen. Results are immediate and even more noticeable after one to two weeks when all the swelling and potential bruising has resolved. They will enhance as your skin produces even more collagen over the next several months.

Watch out for these complications: • Allergic reaction to ingredients in the thread • Bleeding as a result of the procedure building up behind the skin • Visible dimpling or pulling where threads have been inserted • Migration or unintended “movement” of the threads that result in skin that looks lumpy or bulges • Pain under the skin as a result of the thread being too “tight” • Infection at the site of the procedure Call your doctor immediately if you have: • Green, black, brown or red discharge at the site of your procedure • Swelling for more than 48 hours • Persistent headaches • Fever

Ancient Oil Massage Strives for Balance

T

he 5,000-year-old Ayurvedic medicine way of life comes to us from India. This philosophy of self-care through self-healing runs the gambit from lifestyle to diet and nutrition to cleansing and rejuvenation — all to balance one’s body, mind and spirit. Part of this holistic healing philosophy (Ayurveda) includes Abhyanga, or oil, massage (perhaps the best known of many types of Ayurveda massages). It’s likened to a facial massage for your entire body because it’s more about your skin and less about your muscles. Oils and circulation-stimulating movements are used to release muscle tension, encourage lymphatic drainage and nourish the skin. Other benefits include reducing the effects of aging, increasing circulation, stimulating the internal organs, deepening sleep and lubricating the joints. This isn’t the massage you likely imagine that has an emphasis on deep rubbing and kneading to relax your sore, tired, tense muscles. Instead, the focus here is to use essential oils on specific energy points to free emotional burdens. Sessions are tailored to an individual’s dosha, which is comprised of elements of air, space, fire, water and earth naturally occurring in all of us: • Vata, air and space, governs movement

70

Northern A Z Luxur y L iving WINTER 2022

• Pitta, fire and water, governs the digestive and the metabolic system • Kapha, water and earth, governs lubrication and structure. These elements need to be in a perfect ratio, and this type of massage seeks to even them out if you have too much of one over another. For instance, a Vata dosha type usually has dry skin while Kaphas are oilier. The massage protocol may depend on the therapist’s observation, consultation and a questionnaire. Oils are in tune with Vata, Pitta and Kapha needs. They are chosen especially to balance your dominant dosha and warmed to pour over the body. The therapist then generally uses gentle, rhythmic strokes — the pressure is dictated by need. A gentle touch is used for Vata, with a deeper touch for Pitta and an even deeper one for Kapha. Heated organic oil blends infused with Ayurvedic herbs work to relax and detoxify. At the right temperature, they enter the body through the skin and pores to find toxins and release them. The therapist directs movement and oils along your body’s energy lines to balance the chakras, or energy centers. 72

Northern A Z Luxur y L iving WINTER 2022

S

alt — that seasoning we are warned not to consume too much of — can bring healing powers to our skin and lungs. It’s pretty simple. You sit in a room devoid of moisture and humidity and filled with salt as you relax, read, listen to music, meditate or perhaps sleep. And you breathe. In halotherapy, the dry, micro, pure salt particles go deep into your respiratory system and reduce inflammation and absorb mucus in your airway while dissolving bacteria and pollutants. Pure sodium chloride is put into a device called a halogenerator that crushes and grinds the salt into micro-sized particles to disperse the salt aerosol. In short, salt is extremely absorbent, anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory. This therapy is said to help such respiratory conditions as: • Bronchitis • COPD • Cystic fibrosis • Viral, sinus, ear infections • Sinusitis, coughs, colds, flu • Asthma, allergies • Emphysema

And such skin conditions as: • Acne • Psoriasis • Eczema • Scaly skin • Itching Halotherapy, with its history tied to Polish salt miners who did not experience the respiratory issues or lung diseases of other types of miners, has shown itself to relieve stress and anxiety, headaches, lethargy and fatigue, and snoring and sleeping problems while elevating mood and mental alertness. Athletes have reported increased fitness performance, improved breathing, increased lung capacity, shorten recovery time and increased endurance. According to the Salt Therapy Association, based out of Boca Raton, Florida, children and animals also can benefit by halotherapy. For general respiratory hygiene, the association recommends once or twice weekly visits to a salt therapy facility “to enhance the lung capacity boost the immune system, reduce stress and aid better sleep.” More information on halotherapy and other salt therapies can be found at www.salttherapyassociation.org.

ou’re known for buying the finestlooking, highest-quality clothing available for yourself. You love looking at them in the store’s dressing room mirror and when you get ready for a night on the town, but otherwise you don’t get to see them very often if your closet looks like most. Shirts, blouses, sweaters, slacks, dresses, skirts, jeans, ties, handbags and shoes are packed together cheek by jowl, and it’s next to impossible to find what you need in less than 3 minutes. It’s dark and dreary in there and containing little of the excitement and accomplishment you feel when shopping for and maintaining your wardrobe. A luxury closet is more than a place

to store your clothes — it’s a haven, a space where you can be yourself in the apparel that has become such an integral part of your image and interaction with the world. It should be a place where you can do your self-care rituals in the morning and wind down after a long day. Luxury closets should have a seating area, not just for practical reasons like putting on your shoes and shaving in front of a mirror but for relaxation and recharge. Put in a reading nook/ meditation corner, T V screen or both if that’s what your lifestyle is looking for. And, oh yes, the clothes! They should be artfully arranged around your “me”

space, displayed in relatively small, user-friendly groups of like garments, making is easy to unearth the treasures you seek to wear for that formal dinner party, casual game night or longanticipated wedding in your future. Using the best cabinetry and hangers to protect and display your fashions is of utmost importance when creating a luxury closet you can be proud of. Incorporating the best hardwood, custom-made wardrobes with detailed molding is a statement that you and your outfits are worth the investment you’re making. The elements of a true luxury closet always come together with a huge dollop of personalization — the presentation, the lighting, the décor and the emphasis are all up to you. You can put your shoes front and center or your suits or wherever you start when assembling your ensemble in the morning. It’s all about where your bliss is. That said, there are some generalities found in the differences between women’s and men’s closets, whether they share a space or have separate closets:

he new year brings with it endless possibilities. That statement brings joy to my soul. In January, I’ll take the short road trip to The World Market in Las Vegas. Over 4,000 vendors from around the world will be showcasing their wares. Colors, patterns, shapes and textures will ultimately reveal a trend. A trend that is shaped by what appeals to me. As you shop for new products for your home, it makes sense to visit several local shops to help reveal what is appealing to you. Find the fabrics and textures that bring you comfort and create that feeling of “home” to you. The new year is the best time to refresh your décor. Start with one room. I suggest the bedroom where you spend the majority of your time. Winter brings with it longer nights, and what’s better than the thought of soft luxurious sheets, quilts and pillows. Add to that a pair of comfortable upholstered chairs, updated lamps and a beautiful piece of art. Soft champagnes and gold tones are some of the new

Northern A Z Luxur y L iving WINTER 2022

neutrals in bedding. Adding contrast in a more saturated color is a must. This can be accomplished with pillows that can easily and inexpensively be switched out over time. Doubt may creep into your mind as you commit to your

selections when shopping. Asking your local shopkeeper for advice can ease your mind. They most likely have researched the products they carry and are able to make recommendations that are in your best interest. Cheers to 2022!

S

tart browsing. If you want to include art, whether painting or sculpture, in your home to complete your design vision, the key is discovering what emotions you want to evoke. See what speaks to you through books, art fairs, art galleries, museums or yoursuch-good-taste friend. Don’t make artwork for your home an afterthought. What you choose can do so much from inspiring motivation to opening up a small room or cozying up a big room. Viewing it can give one a dopamine boost, increase blood flow to the brain and alleviate stress and depression. As you do your homework to discover what appeals to you, you might want to stay away from anything that confuses, shocks or makes you feel uncomfortable. This is a home after all and you and yours will be viewing what art you’ve chosen for a long time. Know this about the art in your home, it: • Instills a fresh vibe • Lets you express yourself • Evokes powerful emotions

DESIGN

• Set a budget. Browsing will get you started, but if you are looking for more than a few decorating pieces and want to start an art collection, figure out what you want to spend. Start small and increase the amount as your confidence and understanding of art grows. A $1,000 or less a month is a good place to start, and think quality over quantity as your income can change. • Define your goals. What’s your motivation for buying art? Keep in mind that it’s probably best to buy what can bring you joy every day. Consider such logistics as space, installation, insurance, storage and conservation. If return on your investment is driving you to collect, you’ll need to look at midcareer or established artists, which means more expensive works. • Do your homework. Here’s where browsing goes into hyperdrive. Learn about types of artwork mediums and styles; research artists; keep looking, looking, looking. This way you are training your eye to identify the types of art you favor.

• Encourages conservation • Encourages productivity

• Think photography and limited edition prints. These can be a good starting point.

• Creates focal points in a room • Becomes a perfect souvenir • Can be an investment Art makes any room livelier, tells a story about you, helps people to reflect, gets them talking, ignites their thinking and can add value to a home depending on the artist, current demand and technique used. Here are some practical tips on starting an art collection:

• Consider three-dimensional art. Small sculptures and design objects such as a bowl, vase or intricate basket are usually priced to sell. • Certificate of authenticity. Make sure your painting or art object has one; helps with insurance and future valuation. • Short on time or self-confidence? Hire an art consultant.

SEE THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN by Tom Binkley, Owner, Prescott Window Coverings

Blinds & Curtains

U

ndecided between blinds and curtains? This might help. DESIGN The design of curtains varies significantly with a wide range of styles that can add warmth to any room. A curtain can be made from different materials with either a pattern or a solid color. Materials range from silk, linen and lace to more modern synthetic fabrics made from polyester. Horizontal and vertical blinds also have variety in design based on material used. Venetian blinds, for example, have been around for centuries and have the same overall design. Common materials used include hardwood, faux wood, aluminum, vinyl or fabric. COST & INSTALLATION Curtains can be the easiest to install with parts consisting of an appropriate strength curtain rod and curtains. As the design of curtains has progressed, though, there are more costly options including automatic curtains controlled by a remote or light switch. Blind installation will always be a custom-designed process based on the window.

84

Northern A Z Luxur y L iving WINTER 2022

ENERGY EFFICIENCY Thermal curtains can be used to regulate temperatures. However, what you may gain in energy savings may sacrifice how much natural light gets in. High-quality blinds can be used in a similar way for different purposes in winter and summer months. MAINTENANCE & LIFE SPAN It is recommended that window blinds be dusted and spot cleaned year-round although curtains may not need to be cleaned as often. Blinds are more likely to catch dust due to static electricity. Dusting curtains generally requires a handheld vacuum; stain removal requires specialized cleaning products based on material. LIGHT & PRIVACY Blinds and shutters offer more control over the amount of natural light you would like in the room

as they can be partially opened. Sliding curtains are limited in how much light comes in as they will be open or closed. You may consider multiple layers of curtains with one layer providing a sheer white or gray covering to allow light but retain privacy during the day. The second layer can be a thicker material and will provide privacy at night as well as the ability to blackout the room. Roman shades provide another unique type of light control and design. SAFETY Any window treatments with cords or chains should be secured to protect children and pets. Fortunately, many new designs come with cordless options. CAN BLINDS, CURTAINS BE USED TOGETHER? Get the best of both worlds by layering one window treatment with another.

as it ever felt like a luxury to be able to leave your sewing or scrapbooking project out when you’re not working on it, instead of having to pack it away for next time? Then it’s probably past time for you to find a dedicated room for your hobbies where your efforts can sprawl exactly as much as you want them to and you can keep your supplies together and completely organized. Bigger is usually better, but going vertical on your storage can make any room feel more spacious. When designing your craft room it’s important to remember who will be using the space and what they’ll be using it for. Is it for you, the kids, grandkids or all three? Will it be dedicated to making jewelry, pottery or ceramics, painting murals, all of the above? Here are some of the elements to keep front of mind: • Craft table — Nearly every craft aside from knitting or needlepoint will need a flat surface to work on, but requirements will vary widely from there. Just make sure you use high-quality furnishings you’re proud to use and are confident will withstand longterm use. Consider the room’s primary use and whether it’s likely to change in the future.

88

Northern A Z Luxur y L iving WINTER 2022

• Lighting — It’s even more important to get this right in a craft room than the rest of the house. Use as much natural light as available, and layer task and ambient lighting to let users adjust it to the right strength. And go ahead and use a statement hanging light fixture to energize the space. • Storage — This is where the rubber meets the road in most craft rooms. Find a series of cabinets, drawers, cubbies, bookshelves, floating shelves, pegboards, file drawers, racks, buckets,

tubs, tubes, cans, jars and whatever else accommodates the kind of work you’re doing and the materials that go into its creation.

• Walls — Whatever isn’t covered by your storage can feature your own artwork or those of your idols’, inspirational words or quotes, design or inspiration boards or light sconces. Electronic screens may be appropriate if they are essential to your pastime or to selling your creations to customers around the world.

atching light glint off a small crystal pendant hung around your neck or channeling light through a slice of geode to turn it into a dazzling art display isn’t enough for many luxury homeowners and designers anymore — not when there are crystal thrones, chairs, coffee tables, vanities, headboards, fountains, chandeliers and more to buy. These strong, elegant pieces feature natural crystals, many believed to have healing or protective properties. They’re carved from geodes, cut to form tabletops, hung from dramatic light fixtures, chiseled into desks and ottomans, used to accent the legs of sofas and chairs or mounted as brilliant sculptures and settings that can go anywhere in the home. You can even find giant angel wings for you and your loved ones to stand between. Whether you’re a devotee of crystals for revival and safeguarding or love their earth-borne yet out-of-this world aesthetic, there’s an astounding array of choices for your home from the high-end shops of Sedona to businesses around the globe. As for which healing properties to seek for your home and life, it all depends on what you need more of in your life. Here are a few of the most popular crystals and the properties attached to them:

• Amethyst — This violet crystal brings healing and purity, eliminates negative thoughts and promotes humility, wisdom and sincerity. Also believed to promote sobriety and ease insomnia. • Agate — Coming in a rainbow of colors and patterns that hold slightly different properties, as a rule these stones promote healing and grounding. • Citrine — This yellow-orange mineral encourages optimism, childlike wonder, motivation, warmth and clarity of mind while banishing negative thinking. Also promotes mindfulness and creativity. • Rose quartz — Its pinkish glow gives and attracts love, brings trust and harmony back to relationships and restores connections with others, while also promoting self-regard and self-care. • Tourmaline — Most often found in black but also found in other hues, tourmaline balances the left and right sides of the brain and can help you understand yourself and others. It is said to help treat paranoia and dyslexia.

e’ve been spending a lot of our time focused on the comfort of our homes over the past couple of years, and that’s been reflected in our soothing choices in paint colors, furniture, décor and amenities as we’ve been adapting our luxury homes to the trend. Moving into 2022 we’re still likely to spend more time at home with the prospect of continued remote work and high-tech home entertainment options continuing to dominate much of our free time. As a result, the home colors rising to the top of 2022’s trends still lean toward the serene and soothing but also look to infuse new energy into our sumptuous habitats: GREEN After lurking just below No. 1 for the last couple of years, this color bound up with nature and our planet is finally popping at the top of this year’s color trend lists, especially gray-green shades that can serve as versatile neutrals while adding some life-giving verve and elegance. Light sages, brighter avocados (not like those in vogue in the 1970s) and mints are stunning either as the primary wall color or as a statement tint on the door or trim, inside or outside. YELLOW The sunny side of nature has also has been making a splash in the world of interior design lately as a well-deserved shortcut to waking up and approaching the day with an optimistic outlook. Once derided as dated and too over-the-top, today’s light and sunny hues set the ideal mood for capturing the freshness of the outdoors within your walls.

Citron, sunflower and buttery tints will brighten up any room while chartreuse, which is more saturated with stronger hints of green, may lend itself more to accentuating trim or furnishings. Those who really like it find it electrifying. BLUE The color of the sky and sea is still nestled in our hearts as a balm for the ruggedness of daily life and another way to bring the alfresco world indoors. Subtle yet saturated blues bring the feel of a soft breeze when you step into your living room or bedroom, signaling it’s time to let the stresses of the day float away. Azures, cornflowers, sky and baby blues are the shades that come closest to creating this airy feel, with light teals also a good choice to bring a beachier groove. PURPLE Aubergine, about the deepest purple you can get, is also getting a lot of shoutouts from 2022 as the moody, luxurious contrast to the lighter shades being embraced. Perhaps better known here by its less elegantsounding American English translation of “eggplant,” it brings a much richer accent than basic black to most rooms. Aubergine is having a particular moment with bedrooms to envelop users in elegance and a molten warmth that can be enjoyed with or without the lights on.
