Yourself THROUGH TRAVEL by Valerie Demetros

B

reaking away from your day-to-day existence is a necessity for anyone. And travel can revitalize your body and mind, taking you away from stress and responsibilities for just a little bit. If this sounds like something you need, there are a few things you can do. The No. 1 rule: Do not

overschedule. You don’t want to come home more stressed than when you left. Travel is not a chore and shouldn’t feel like one. Leave work at home (as much as possible). This is your time. Focus on yourself and renewed relationships. You can’t be truly present when you are constantly thinking about work.

F E AT U R E

Now is the time to catch up on those zzzzs. Take naps — yes, actual naps — and go to bed when you are tired. You aren’t missing anything, you’re on vacation. Sleep until you are rested. Following this trend, be spontaneous. If you planned a museum visit but find a cultural festival instead, change your plans. Nobody says you have to rigidly adhere to any schedule. You’ll be more relaxed and renewed if you go with the flow. Treat yourself to an entire day of spa treatments if it feels right. Wander through a botanical garden and breathe in the beauty.

18

Northern A Z Luxur y L iving VOL. 3, NO. 6

While you’re at it, try something new. Ride that zipline or climb into a glider plane. At the very least, try the local cuisine and seek out cultural experiences. And don’t let the mishaps get you down. It happens to everyone. Be patient, even a flat tire or missed connections can offer the chance to see life with a different perspective. At the very least, it creates a great story to tell back home. Discovering yourself can happen in the next state over or abroad. Your renewed peace of mind and happiness is the best souvenir of all.

YOUR SKIN WITHOUT

PLASTIC SURGERY here is nothing wrong with a little editing, like erasing a few fine lines, softening a crease or evening out irregular spots. To that end, there are an array of products and procedures to help revitalize your skin without resorting to plastic surgery. There are even a few natural ways to aid your skin’s health. The following are several popular techniques you may want to investigate further. BOTOX Botulinum toxin, which includes Botox, Dysport and Xeomin, is fairly affordable, requires little recovery time and carries relatively few risks. It is effective at temporarily smoothing wrinkles on your face, brow or neck. SOFT-TISSUE FILLERS These are injected under the skin and add height to cheekbones, improve the jaw line and diminish scars. Some also restore fullness to cheeks, sculpt lips and fill in the deep lines. Some fillers, like hyaluronic acid and poly-L-lactic acid, are eventually absorbed by the body. Others contain tiny beads suspended in gel that is eventually absorbed over time while the beads form a framework for new collagen. MICRODERMABRASION This consists of sanding an area with tiny aluminum hydroxide crystals to create smoother-looking skin. It’s popular since it’s relatively inexpensive and has no recovery time.

MICRONEEDLING Here, a doctor repeatedly applies an electric or battery-operated instrument with multiple thin, sharp needles. These needles cause tiny injuries that stimulate the production of collagen and elastin. Hyaluronic or ascorbic acid are applied before or after to penetrate deeply. This is also relatively risk-free and inexpensive. CHEMICAL PEELS These peels treat wrinkles, age spots, discoloration, precancerous skin growths and superficial scarring. An acid solution is applied, usually glycolic, salicylic or trichloroacetic acid, that dissolves skin cells and removes the top layers. Effects can vary based on how deep the peel goes. LASER THERAPY Lasers can remove moderate to deep lines and wrinkles and improve skin tone, texture and tightness. Because they target specific types of cells, they can be used to treat port-wine stains, pigmented birthmarks and even spider veins. Of course, if you’re looking to revitalize your face, there are a few natural things you can do to help your skin look its best. First, drink enough water to stay hydrated — dehydration is your skin’s worst enemy. Also, the less sleep you get the more it shows on your face. Aim for eight hours of sleep per night for a healthy glow. You also can’t go wrong by eating right. Eat foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids and limit alcohol and caffeine. Finally, if you don’t know already, smoking draws moisture from your skin, prevents healing and constricts blood flow, so quit. Your skin will thank you by glowing and looking healthier. THE RIPPLES OF

MOIRE DESIGN

M

ARE TRENDING

by Valerie Demetros

oiré — you may not know the name, but you have probably seen a moiré pattern and may have even worn it. It’s been around since the 1600s, mainly in clothing and accessories and has been used as an effect in decorating for years. Derived from the French verb moirer, it refers to producing a watered textile by weaving or pressing to produce an unpredictable rippling pattern. It’s most commonly done in silk because of the water-like sheen it affords. Moiré is traditionally made via calendering, when a fabric is passed under numerous rollers that alter its appearance through pressure and high temperature. Cue the ripple effect. Lately, a few brands and interior designers have redirected their sights to the historic textile that whispers opulence, reintroducing it to today’s quiet luxury. As early as the 1960s, Jackie Kennedy draped a White House room in mosstinted silk moiré walls. And now, the rippled wood grain and marble look is more modern than ever. Designs lately have shown black silk moiré walls in the Brooklyn Heights Designer Showcase and even in

22

Northern A Z Luxur y L iving VOL. 3, NO. 6

Oscar de la Renta’s recent designs. Much like stone or wood grain, moiré can offer a more subtle, textural level than other patterned fabrics, creating a sense of depth and movement without adding too loud a color contrast. When used in the right way, moiré enhances a space, subtly playing with light to make smaller spaces — such as dressing rooms or hidden nooks — appear larger. Designers are quick to suggest that when applying moiré walls and furniture, consider light sources in the room. The effect is really only appreciated in a

space that has adequate lighting, especially natural light. Of course, it wouldn’t look totally flat in a darker room, but since it reflects light, the variation and movements just wouldn’t be the same. When it comes to upholstery, the nondirectional quality of a moiré motif can be a fresh option offering movement and textural appeal. At the very least, choose a throw or throw pillows, or perhaps add one wall with a moiré design to create a modern, subtle sense of luxury and movement.

SPLURGE ON YOUR PERSONAL TRAINER FOR

24

Best Results

Northern A Z Luxur y L iving VOL. 3, NO. 6

F E AT U R E

W

hen you’re looking for help reaching elusive fitness and health goals, hiring a personal trainer is an obvious starting point but be selective and invest in one with the proper education and experience. Whether you’re working for improved overall health or addressing a specific need like rehab from an injury or training for a marathon, the right one will get you where you need to go much more quickly and safely. At minimum, a trainer should provide health and fitness assessments, a training plan built around your abilities and goals, workouts in either a gym, home or workplace setting with supervision for proper form, and nutrition plans. They act as your training partner. What else to look for: EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION There is no standardized credential for personal trainers, but keep an eye out for those certified by such reputable organizations as the National Academy of Sports Medicine, the American Council on Exercise or the International Sports Sciences Association. Beyond that you can narrow the field further by prioritizing candidates with an associate or bachelor’s degree in exercise science, physical education, kinesiology or a related field. EXPERIENCE You shouldn’t just consider the number of years they’ve been in the field, but the kind of clients they’ve had. Seek out those who have worked with people at the same fitness level and with generally the same goals as you — referrals can be a great way to track these people down. Certifications and degrees aren’t always correlated to the right trainer for you, so look at the whole person.

MOTIVATIONAL STYLE One of your trainer’s main functions is to motivate you and not just because you’re paying them and meeting at a specific time. They should motivate you while you’re together through encouragement, constructive comments and inspiration to push yourself beyond your previous limits. This can be hard to ascertain before you start, but talking with them ahead of time can signal whether you’re dealing with a drill sergeant or nurturing teacher — know which approach works best for you. COMMUNICATION Your trainer should be an excellent communicator, able to clearly explain every exercise and why you’re doing it. They need to be approachable enough for you to ask any question you want and personable for you to want to hang out with them. It should be clear they’re focused on your current fitness level and helping you progress in the most efficient way possible. COMMITMENT Find a trainer who strives to improve beyond just keeping their certification up to date (usually every two years). You want someone genuinely curious about new developments in the field and how to incorporate them into their sessions with clients. They should be dedicated to learning more about you and your goals rather than assuming they know everything. Your trainer needs to consistently introduce new exercises that help you progress toward your goal.

ne of the great advantages of owning a beautiful home is sharing it with guests. And when it comes to decorating a guest room, comfort is key. When decorating your guest rooms, consider the details you appreciate when traveling and incorporate them. Consider how long your guests usually stay and whether they tend to visit during certain seasons (skiing, summer). Here are just a few tips from expert decorators and travelers.

COMFORTABLE BEDS Invest in a good mattress, mattress topper and soft, luxurious bedding to welcome sleepy travelers. USE YOUR SPACE WISELY If you’re short on space, add a Murphy bed. The room can be used as an office, and used as a guest room when needed with a sophisticated and comfortable Murphy bed. BOOKSHELVES A bookcase adds personality to the room and offers guests a choice of reading material. It can also offer more space for their belongings in a small room. SEATING Give your guests somewhere to sit and relax aside from the bed, along

26

with good lighting. Many people work when away from home, so think about adding a desk.

empty and provide a luggage rack or small table for a suitcase. Even a small chair works in a pinch.

TV AND WI-FI Although the TV shouldn’t dominate the room, it’s an expected amenity in most guest rooms. Make sure you add a note with the TV remote instructions and the Wi-Fi password.

CURTAINS/SHADES Even if you like waking up to the sun rise, chances are not all of your guests will agree. Add blackout curtains or shades in case your guests want an afternoon nap or wish to sleep in.

STORAGE Just because they aren’t visiting for long doesn’t mean they don’t need space. Clear out space in the closet, leave a few drawers

FRESH FLOWERS Finally, brighten the space with a few fresh flowers and snacks for your guests to make them feel welcome.

REVAMP AND RECOMMIT:

RECHARGE YOUR WORKOUT

I

t’s all too common for us to lose some footing on our fitness routine toward the end of the year. It’s usually related to all the familial and social obligations that come with it, but it can also be due to it becoming stale or unexciting. If you’re struggling to find time or feign enthusiasm for your daily 3-mile run or 45-minute Zumba video, it’s probably time to shake things up! Here are some strategies to get things back on track. FIND YOUR REAL ‘WHY’ We’re encouraged to set concrete goals in terms of weight lost, target heart rate or any number of other data points without, perhaps, enough focus on how you want to feel or what you want to accomplish. Knowing you’re doing it to ward off current or future chronic illness, be able to keep up with the rest of your family or to boost your mental health (or all of these) will help you maintain your enthusiasm for working out. When you feel as if you have too much else on your plate, your enthusiasm is waning or you aren’t meeting your goals as fast as you think you should be, this will be what keeps you going. TRY A 30-DAY CHALLENGE If you’ve been stuck in a rut or focusing on long-term goals that may not feel attainable, it’s time to build a shortterm challenge into your routine. Find one that focuses on something you’ve been wanting to address for a while (like abs, for instance) or a type of move that’s different from but complementary to the workout you’re already doing.

Make this your “non-negotiable” exercise, the activity you’ll find time for every day no matter what, and see how much of that motivation spills over to the rest of your routine. Most challenges focus on participation instead of hitting a specific number, so they keep you focused on the intangible joys of movement and exercise. THINK OF WHAT WOULD BE FUN If you just don’t enjoy your workouts anymore it’s probably time to come up with something else. This could call for some soul searching, especially if you used to love doing that 3-mile run. A different route may be all that it takes to put that spring back in your step. If it’s not that simple, go back to what you used to love doing as a kid and find a way to replicate it as closely as you can. You also can talk to your friends about what else they’ve tried and loved to get some ideas. PLANT THE SEEDS FOR WORKOUT SUCCESS Focusing too much on the workout without warming up, cooling down and recovery may be what’s causing your fatigue and dissatisfaction. Make time for all of these, even if you need to slightly shorten the actual workout. They help protect you from injuries that could force you to stop exercising, regardless of your motivation.

Luxury Gifts

W

hether you’re shopping for your husband, dad, son, ride-or-die friend, colleague or some random dude you just met, finding gifts that will resonate and be appreciated over time is always going to be a challenge, even if your budget isn’t too restrictive. Here are gifts that’ll deliver great value for you and the recipient. A HUNK-A BURNIN’ LOVE The power of flame and heat are irresistible to men. Combine them with musky, leathery, smoky and spicy aromas and you’ve got something any man would love to have on

YOUR MAN WILL

NEVER FORGET his desk or nightstand. Lux labels are producing more and more candles with notes of patchouli, cedar, neroli and even tobacco and cannabis. If that’s too subtle for him just get a small tabletop fire pit he can bring to any indoor or outdoor occasion. HEALTH GIVING Most men don’t slow down and take care of themselves as much as they should, so this is your chance to nudge them. Shaving kits often squeeze in lotions and serums, acupressure mats and foam rollers decrease

pain and an air purifier can capture pollutants before they’re inhaled and do harm. If he never finds time for his workout, a state-of-theart home fitness system will set him on the right path. KILLER GADGETS If you put a little thought into what the object of your affection is craving and would use more than once, your gift will avoid being thrown into the closet or regift pile. If he’s a chef on the weekends, he (and everyone he cooks for) will love an indoor herb garden. If he’s always kvetching about cold coffee, find a temperature-controlled mug. A film fanatic really should have his own mini-projector, and audiophiles could always use another wireless speaker. EXPERIENCE THIS Experiences are on the upswing with many people valuing them over “things.” From the wildly popular (like racing cars or flying planes) to oddly perfect (rage rooms where you can smash everything in sight, dirt lots where you can excavate or bulldoze to your heart’s content), you can find someplace unforgettable to send your favorite guy out to play.

YOUR CLOSET CHOICES FOR THE

New Year Ahead

Y

ou don’t need to dump and refill your closets at the end of one year and the beginning of the next to keep up with current trends, but since it’s a time for reflection it’s the perfect moment to reflect on what’s there. What do you actually wear? Are there gaps? How can you refresh your outfits to better align with who you are and what you love? KNOW YOUR GOALS Decide what you want to accomplish before making any decisions. Do you want to integrate more colors in general or just one or two of them? Are you trying your hand at creating a capsule (versatile, interchangeable pieces) wardrobe? Or there could be a trend coming down the runway you’re really psyched about and want in your rotation right now. KNOW WHAT YOU HAVE It’s time to go on a voyage of self-discovery through your closets, drawers, hampers and

34

Northern A Z Luxur y L iving VOL. 3, NO. 6

storage to know exactly what clothes you own and what you might be able to do with them. Start with the things you wear the most often and think about why you gravitate toward them. If it’s simply out of habit then it’s time to tuck them further back in your closet and give your other garments a chance. If it’s color, fit, comfort or how it makes you feel, take note. Then sort through the rest and find the ones that have some of the same traits you value, plus any that fill a particular niche you value, like a little black dress or classic blazer. KNOW WHAT YOU NEED Once you have a new understanding of what’s in your closet and what your preferences are, be selective about what you buy from here on out. You may find you need a new pair of jeans, a couple of tailored shirts or some new scarves or hats, but the best thing that can happen is finding novel ways to mix and match what you already have.

On a wellness yacht you can float through the most beautiful seascapes in the world as your healthy, nourishing meals are prepared by a private chef. A masseuse is on call to tend to every stiff muscle after you work out in the gym, do your laps in the heated pool and frolic with every water toy at your disposal. Also included: sauna, spa treatments and excursions to some of the most glamorous ports in the world. There’s room for 10 to 12 people who can split the tab, and you’ll share a wellness voyage you’ll never forget. TITANIA This 240-footer puts the “super” in superyacht with a glass-enclosed climate-controlled gym with a trainer, a spa room with a masseuse/beauty therapist, Jet Skis with two licensed instructors, a kitchen with two head chefs and a pool and Jacuzzi. Unforgettable Vacations AT LUXURY ALPINE SKI RESORTS by Blake Herzog

W

hether you are a veteran ski bum, do it a couple times per winter or are stepping onto skis for the first time, there’s no better place to do it than a luxurious resort in the shadow of breathtaking mountain peaks. And there’s no better place to find them than the Alps. The 60,000-square-mile range in south-central Europe has captured the world’s imagination with its scenery, culture and magnificent ski chalets and resorts. Opened in 1907, the village of La Clusaz, France, is considered by many as the oldest continuously

operating ski resort in the world, and it opened the door to the opulent results that were established throughout the region. Take a look at some of the most exclusive resorts you can visit over the winter season (and beyond): AUSTRIA The Alps traverse the length of this nation and are threaded throughout with sumptuous resort areas. The largest is Ski Arlberg, made up of seven villages including Lech, a picturesque thatched-roof village especially friendly to beginning and

intermediate skiers and dotted with sumptuous chalets and restaurants. Nearby St. Anton is thriving as a summer resort as well. Farther east, Kitzbuhel is a magnet for celebrities and royalty and is filled with enticing high-end shops. FRANCE This is where skiing luxury was born, and it continues to be a primary hub of worldclass skiing and hospitality. Courchevel is on the eastern end of Les Trois Valles, the world’s largest connected ski area that can be traveled with a single pass, a skier’s icy heaven. Its 11 five-star luxury resorts and high-end shops draw wealthy tourists from across the globe, particularly the Middle East.

Chamonix at the base of Mount Blanc draws expert skiers but has some runs that are more family-friendly. ITALY You probably won’t be surprised to learn that in Italy skiing moves beyond sport to lifestyle, with food and wine adjacent to the athletic activities. The Alps wrap around its northern border and include the Dolomites on the eastern side, which are technically part of the Alps but considered by many to be a separate region. That’s where you’ll find chic Cortina d’Ampezzo and quaint Val Gardena. Valle d’Aosta in the far northwest is the Alpine section and features the spectacular

Gran Paradiso National Park and charming Courmayeur. SWITZERLAND The Swiss pioneered winter sports tourism and boast a long skiing season, along with Austria. Zermatt is a car-free city at the base of the real Matterhorn offering a delightfully relaxed atmosphere and 200 miles of skiable terrain. Verbier’s resorts do luxury with a capital L at the heart of a network of off-piste trails to delight and challenge more advanced skiers. Gstaad is known as the most expensive resort area in the Alps, and you get what you pay for — it’s managed to achieve a delicate balance between maintaining its historic charm and beauty and updating its facilities for today’s travelers.

t’s that time of year. The holiday parties begin and whether you’re taking a break from alcohol or entertaining those who don’t imbibe, it’s essential to make the alcohol-free cocktails just as important and elegant as the super-fueled versions. These days, there’s no shortage of amazing alcohol-free options on the market from non-alcoholic (NA) beer produced by major brands to small-batch, craft spirits. Of course, half the fun of cocktails is the ritual of making them, and that has nothing to do with alcohol. You’ll need the following to be bartender-ready for the first gathering: NA SPIRITS First, stock your bar with essential basic alcohol-free spirits. TÖST is a startlingly delicious champagne alternative made from white tea, white cranberry and ginger. This

42

Northern A Z Luxur y L iving VOL. 3, NO. 6

sparkling NA version is crisp, dry like real bubbly and for a NYE toast, it looks nearly identical. For a fun twist on mezcal or vodka, Optimist makes distilled NA spirits that are flawless on the rocks or mixed with tonic or seltzer. All contain combinations of herbs, florals and fruit extracts. If you’re looking to concoct an NA Old Fashioned, Spiritless uses oak extract to mimic the flavor of bourbon sans alcohol. Appreciate the notes of oak, smoke and vanilla as a 1:1 substitute for your favorite whiskey. Remember to read the labels of your NA spirits and store accordingly. Some require refrigeration while their counterparts would not. Some NA ingredients have a shorter shelf life than their alcoholic counterparts. NA MIXERS With NA mixers, variety is essential. Start with a few carbonated options like soda water, ginger

beer, grapefruit soda and tonic. Then branch out with agua frescas and flavored sparkling waters and cranberry juice and OJ. BAR ACCESSORIES Since NA cocktails can be just as complex as alcoholic ones, you’ll need all the usual accessories including an ice bucket, ice (including larger block cubes), a shaker, strainer, spoon and jigger. And don’t forget the cheerful bar glasses in all vital styles. GARNISHES You’ll need garnishes like lemons, limes and oranges as well as pomegranate seeds, raspberries and dried fruit and herbs. Ultimately, don’t stress out. Use the same methods as you would with alcoholic versions of your drinks while using their NA counterparts. Just keeping your guests happy and accommodating their needs goes a long way. Happy partying.

FALL + YOUR WARDROBE =

Cherry Red!

T

by Michelle Beck, Owner, Purple Clover Boutique

he weather is cooler, pumpkin spice is everywhere and in everything, so that means fall fashion is in! For fall 2023, one color stands out above all the others. That color is rich cherry red. We’re seeing this color in every area of fashion. This bold hue is quite the change from the normal muted colors of autumn. Sweaters, handbags, shoes and scarves will all feature this shade in one way or another. A similar bold style for the new season is metallic silver! All the metallics are still in fashion, but silver is definitely No. 1. Add a shiny necklace, earrings or even a belt to capture this trend. Don’t think the metallics are just for evening — this trend also looks great for daytime wear. On the other end of the spectrum the traditional colors for fall are still popular. Black, navy blue and especially olive green are wardrobe staples. Consider these colors as the backdrop for those bright pops of red and silver. The shirt/jacket aka “shacket” is still going strong. An oversized look in corduroy is very popular and so are plaid patterns in just about every color. The shacket is a musthave for everyone. This look works for every age and fashion style.

Northern A Z Luxur y L iving VOL. 3, NO. 6

It’s fine to wear denim-ondenim! Once considered a fashion faux pas, wearing denim jeans with a denim shirt is now considered to be in style. Not just for a western look, consider pairing all of your denim pieces together with a great belt or a patterned scarf. Denim also looks great with the metallic jewelry of your choice. It’s “sweater weather!” You cannot go wrong with a chunky cable knit, a long cardigan or anything in between. Look for that bright cherry red to show up in many different styles. Depending on where you live, a sweater can take the place of a jacket for cool mornings and evenings. Have fun this fall, and try something new!

FASHION’S ‘WRONG SHOE’

Theory by Valerie Demetros

46

Northern A Z Luxur y L iving VOL. 3, NO. 6

LIFEST YLE

I

n the fashion world, sometimes opposites attract, and right now those opposites are your shoes. If you haven’t heard of TikTok’s “wrong shoe” fashion trend, then be prepared to open up an entirely new wardrobe right in your own closet. This fashion trend is exactly what it sounds like — wearing the wrong shoes leading to a new effortlessly cool look. Think Carrie Bradshaw and you can picture it pretty well, but let’s break it down just to be sure. WHAT IT IS The “wrong shoe” theory is something you may already have done, only now it has a name. Basically, the theory involves picking shoes for an outfit that are traditionally so wrong it actually works. Your outfit becomes more interesting and unique, making it the “right” choice. WHAT TO DO You may be wondering how to try it and not look as if you got dressed in the dark or have absolutely no style. Don’t worry, it’s a lot easier than it sounds. The secret is to own your choice and try a few before making that choice. First, start with the shoes you’d usually pair with your outfit. Once you find the ‘right’ shoes, it makes it that much easier to find which would be the ‘wrong’ choice. Mix things up and try combinations you wouldn’t usually try; add new color and texture to create a look that works for you. This also means you’ll be wearing your shoes with more outfits, creating new looks and needing to buy fewer shoes.

INSPIRATION If your personal style is playful but sophisticated, you might wear a flowy dress with strappy sandals. Following the wrong shoe theory, switch them out for a pair of Doc Martins to look effortless and stylish. For a more sporty look, instead of pairing ballet flats with a soft, flowing skirt, choose running shoes for comfort and style. Yes, they clash, but in a stylish way that makes them work perfectly together. Track pants are certainly not usually a glamorous look, but by applying the wrong shoe theory, you can pair your casual track pants with a crop top and silver kitten heels for a night out with contemporary style. Got a pencil skirt you haven’t worn lately? Try it with a pair of Birkenstocks for a wrong-shoe look that updates the skirt and makes it a more everyday item in your wardrobe. Don’t be afraid to jump into your closet and go crazy. Try those heels you are saving for a special occasion with a pair of leggings or even shorts. If this all seems a bit strange and scary, start slowly and work your way into cowboy boots and gym shorts. Just be confident and own it, just like Carrie would.

HOW TO WEAR A

Turtleneck

TO FRESHEN YOUR

WARDROBE

T

48

urtlenecks are a mainstay in fall and winter wardrobes, and for good reason. They are chic and versatile and can go above and beyond when added to outfits. The beauty of the simple turtleneck lies in the fact that there are so many ways to rock one. Layer some of your favorite summer outfits with a turtleneck to add a bit of warmth and stand out. A lightweight turtleneck can be worn with baggy-fit boyfriend jeans and retro-style sneakers. Try bypassing skinny jeans in favor of high-waisted flares. Style a turtleneck with wide-leg wool trousers for a classic, chic style. If you’re still loving your tankstyle dress but the weather is chilling, grab a turtleneck. Choose a contrasting color or pattern to make it look deliberate. If you’ve got a neutral suit and you’re looking to punch it up, find a turtleneck in a vibrant pattern or color to create a spark. As you transition warm to chilly weather, wear a full maxi skirt with a cropped turtleneck to add a bit of warmth and style. One way to supercharge an outfit is to combine cool and warm tones. Bright red separates looks hotter when paired with a cool lavender turtleneck top.

Northern A Z Luxur y L iving VOL. 3, NO. 6

Pair a pink turtleneck with pink pants to turn heads and feel contemporary and beautiful. Wearing bright colors headto-toe make for a stunning monochromatic moment. For men, couple a black soft, cashmere turtleneck with either dark jeans or dark tailored wool slacks — always an eyecatcher and super comfy. Add a tailored jacket to add a bit of classic elegance. A warm, fluffy turtleneck can bring a bit of elegance to overalls for an outfit that’s also comfy. Finally, don’t be afraid to mix it up. Grab a white turtleneck and pull out that tulle shirt, or wear those leather pants or pencil skirt with a bright turtleneck. There are no rules. For men, the same “no-rule” rule applies. Think outside the box and go unconventional and wear that bright orange turtleneck with yellow Ralph Lauren’s slim stretch jean or soft hiking pants for a rugged look.

y first impression of most castles is, “Wow! How did any army defeat this enormous fortress?” Then, I realize I’ve answered my own question because it would take several battalions to defend a complex as large as Kumamoto Castle, and it would be just a matter of time before they ran out of provisions and water. We started our day exploring the public areas of the castle complex originally established in 1467 and mostly restored between 1998 and 2008 after centuries of damaging events including earthquakes. Departing mid-morning, we arrived in Takachiho in time for a sample of local sake followed by a hearty lunch that fortified us for the hike down into the gorge. The beautiful waterfall and cave that cuts into the gorge are steeped in legend. We didn’t catch a glimpse of the sun goddess, but had fun watching the rental boats bobbing and dodging each other along the river. We ended our day at the Amano Iwato Shrine, a quiet and cool way to refresh after the excitement of the gorge. The small town of Yufuin tempted me to find a tiny corner and hide so the tour would leave me behind. Nestled below Mount Yufu and surrounded by terraced rice fields and hot springs puffing in the spring air, the walk around Kinrin Lake chilled me into a reluctant walk back into the pedestrian area. Yufuin is small, but with huge appeal with many boutiques and art galleries representing both traditional and contemporary styles. The hot springs theme continued on our visit to Beppu. There are eight hot springs bubbling, each with a different name signifying a journey through hell such as Cooking Pot Hell and Tornado Hell, the last erupting every 10 minutes. You can purchase eggs boiled in the hot springs, which to me didn’t exactly smell like heaven.

LIFEST YLE

However, the greenhouse bursting with the scent of bananas and orchids blooming in the humid air smelled lovely. Following lunch, our bus parked in the belly of a beast of a ferry. This is probably the most efficient means of traveling between the two southern regions of Kyushu and Shikoku, but if you are not a hardy sailor make sure to take preventative precautions. A number of our fellow passengers didn’t enjoy the choppy threehour journey as much as we did and were happy to get back on the bus as rain started to spit on our way to Dogo Onsen. Darkness and mist combined to present Dogo Onsen, Japan’s most famous hot spring, in all her noble mystery. We lingered in the silky hot springs, soaking tension from muscles tight from miles of bumping across land and sea and quickly realized why it’s a favorite of the Imperial family. Our final day included my favorite experience of the trip, a morning in Ritsurin Gardens with over 300 cherry trees sprinkling us with their delicate flowers. One of the trees is the “Authoritative” tree that meteorologists measure to determine the official start to cherry blossom season. As beautiful as the trees are, the garden’s design embraced me. Its peacefulness lasted until Osaka’s Dotonbori district snapped me out of it. Picture Vegas on steroids. Towering neon lights compete with each other for space amid food carts and restaurants snaking down both sides of the Dotonbori-gawa River. When contrasting the graceful Maiko performance, the ancient castles, hot springs, cold sake and electric nightlife, I believe Southern Japan offers diversity to appeal to every generation.

WINE

Decanting 101

56

Northern A Z Luxur y L iving VOL. 3, NO. 6

LIFEST YLE

D

ecanting wine can be confusing and intimidating. When should you, which wines need it and is it really necessary? Let’s take the mystery out of the game and make it easier to decide. Decanting serves two purposes: to separate any sediment and to aerate a wine. Vintage ports and some red wines naturally produce sediment as they age because the color pigments and tannins bond together. Stirring the sediment when pouring clouds a wine’s appearance and imparts a bitter flavor. It may not be harmful, but it’s definitely less pleasant. Decanting separates this sediment. After five to 10 years in the bottle, most reds will accumulate sediments. So, even if you can’t see it, decant it. First, set the bottle upright at least a day if you can so the sediment can slide to the bottom of the bottle. Next, pour the wine into the decanter slowly, without stopping. When you get to the bottom half of the bottle, stop as soon as you see the sediment. Sediment isn’t always obvious so hold a light up to the neck or use a stainless-steel filter to catch the sediment. Another reason to decant is to aerate the wine. Some feel that extra boost of oxygen can open up a wine and give it extra life, especially if it’s older than 10 years. For a young wine, turn the bottle upside down and let it splash into the decanter, producing a frothy head. While some believe all wine benefits from decanting, those in the opposite camp believe that

decanting makes a wine fade faster and wine is exposed to plenty of oxygen by swirling in your glass. You can decide for yourself. If you’ve opened a wine and it seems flat, it can’t hurt to try decanting to see if it helps. How long you decant before drinking depends on your wine. For a wine more than 15 years old, less than an hour before drinking should work. A younger, full-bodied red can be decanted an hour or more before serving. Experts are divided on decanting white wines. Some believe any wine benefits from decanting, even sparkling. Others side on decanting reds only. A decanter with a simple design is appropriate for young and old wines, but make sure it’s comfortable to hold. For full-bodied reds like petite sirahs and tempranillos, choose a decanter with a wide base. Mediumbodied reds like a merlot or sangiovese can have a medium base, and lightbodied reds like pinot noir can be served in a small to medium-sized decanter that has been chilled. Whites and rosé wines usually don’t need to be decanted, but a small, chilled decanter is fine if you like. If you’re not sure if you need to decant and just want to aerate your wine, there are wine aerators that introduce lots of oxygen, meaning it’s decanted by the time it hits your glass. Some people even recommend putting your wine in a blender to give it a good aerating, and it works.

Too many times it becomes more important to focus on careers, family and the daily demands of

life. Unfortunately, your spiritual health can get left behind. As you decide to look at revitalizing your skin routine, exercise practice or diet, add your spiritual health to the list. WELLNESS SOCIAL MEDIA DETOX There are many ways to ease into a social media detox. You don’t need to jump into it 100%, that may be too shocking for most of us. But look at your accounts and see what can be streamlined. Let friends know that you’re taking a break, or better yet take some time to yourself and unplug. At least give yourself a set amount of time each day to scroll and stick to it. Then get outside and scroll through life instead. TRAVEL Refresh your life through travel. It can have a wonderful effect on your spirit. This could be in a local park or someplace you’ve always wanted to see. Make it exotic, or keep it simple and find a place in the mountains to chill. The important thing is to get away and make time for yourself while seeing more of the world, meeting people and opening your spirit along the way.

64

EAT BETTER Revitalize your diet. This doesn’t mean go on a strict fad diet. Rather, it means be good to yourself. Prepare organic, flavorful meals for you and your family, and take the time to eat slowly, talk and make it a spiritual experience. Or simply prepare a meal for yourself and practice mindful eating on your own. DANCE Yes, simply dancing around your living room can be a spiritual practice. Dancing can release trapped energy and help you express your true self. Start by playing some music you love, all by yourself, and simply letting yourself move. Be silly or serious — it’s your call and your spirit. JOURNAL Journaling is a quick and easy spiritual practice you can take anywhere. You can become more mindful of your daily thoughts; writing them down helps you identify patterns. Try writing for at least five minutes every day.

If writing is not your game, let your spirit express itself through a journal by drawing, painting, creating a collage or using stickers. Anything to express your inner thoughts. PRACTICE BREATHWORK There are a variety of breathwork exercises, the most common are a simple rhythm of inhaling and exhaling rapidly without pause or the Pranayama exercise of alternative nostril breathing. It may seem simple, but practicing breathwork with guidance can lead to nervous system healing and spiritual insights. FIND YOUR OWN SPACE Create a dedicated space where you can think, meditate and relax. Maybe a meditation room all your own or simply an open corner will work. Decorate with what you need to fill your soul. Add yoga mats, pillows, candles, music or incense. Find your mindful space and refresh your spirit your way, you deserve it.

Skin Tightening:

Customized Solutions

W

by Aymee Wilson, Owner & Founder, Wilson Aesthetics

FOR DIFFERENT ETHNICITIES

hen it comes to skin tightening, a onesize-fits-all approach does not work. Each individual has unique skin characteristics influenced by their ethnic background, such as skin tone, texture and sensitivity. It’s essential to tailor skin tightening treatments to meet the specific needs of different ethnicities. SKINPEN MICRONEEDLING: VERSATILE SOLUTION FOR ETHNIC SKIN This treatment delivers remarkable skin tightening benefits, catering to individuals of different ethnicities. It harnesses the power of a specialized device equipped with ultra-fine needles that creates microscopic punctures on the skin’s surface. These punctures, also known as micro-injuries, are strategically made at varying depths, depending on the targeted skin concerns and individual needs. By adjusting the depth and intensity of the micro-injuries, the procedure can effectively address diverse concerns across different ethnicities, ensuring optimal results while prioritizing safety and satisfaction. Creating micro-injuries through SkinPen Microneedling is a powerful stimulus for the skin’s natural healing process. When the skin detects these micro-injuries, it initiates a complex cascade of events to repair and rejuvenate the treated area. The skin produces new collagen, a vital protein that maintains its structure and elasticity. Increased elastin,

66

Northern A Z Luxur y L iving VOL. 3, NO. 6

another essential protein, promotes the skin’s suppleness and firmness. Benefits include: • Improved skin texture & tone • Minimized fine lines, wrinkles • Non-invasive • Minimal downtime EMPOWERRF TONE: ADVANCED SKIN TIGHTENING FOR ALL SKIN TYPES This procedure transcends the realm of conventional skin-tightening treatments, offering a solution suitable for individuals of all skin types, including diverse ethnicities. At the heart of treatment lies technology that leverages electrical muscle stimulation to induce involuntary muscle contractions. This approach takes advantage of the body’s natural physiological response to electrical impulses, which activates muscle fibers and initiates contractions. Electrical muscle stimulation has been widely recognized for

engaging muscles and promoting strength development. It uses electrical impulses that mimic the signals the central nervous system sends, effectively triggering muscle contractions. EmpowerRF Tone provides handsfree applicators for precise and targeted muscle engagement. These applicators are strategically placed on specific muscle groups, such as the abdomen, arms, buttocks, or thighs and emit controlled electrical impulses. As the electrical impulses stimulate the muscles, they contract and relax rhythmically, working toward a more sculpted and defined appearance. Benefits include: • Muscle toning • Customized treatment • Non-invasive procedure • Improved muscle strength • Increased blood circulation • Long-lasting results

Less Water, More Beauty

C

heck the ingredient list of any beauty product you own and chances are you’ll find “aqua/water” listed as a top ingredient. Standard shampoos contain about 70% water while conditioners jump to about 90%. For decades, water has been used in preparing beauty and grooming products to help with application, hydration, texture and dissolving water-soluble actives (like vitamin C) so they work better on your skin. But for the most part, the majority of the water in liquid shampoo, conditioner or face wash is just creating the illusion of value by filling a big bottle. Luckily, many beauty brands are beginning to see the light, and the industry is seeing a wave of waterless beauty products that are more sustainable and just as effective, if not more. Waterless, water-free or anhydrous beauty is simply skin care and cosmetics formulated without water. Instead, they use various butters, oils or waxes and oil-soluble actives as ingredients. Waterless products also are typically more concentrated because they tend to contain higher levels of active ingredients that aren’t diluted. These can be preserved with more natural or earth-friendly preservatives and need smaller packaging. In turn, lighter, smaller packaging reduces shipping weight and space, which then reduces the overall carbon footprint. Also, because they are typically more concentrated and more potent, waterless products tend to last longer since you typically use less. And following this,

68

Northern A Z Luxur y L iving VOL. 3, NO. 6

they are usually smaller and more compact, making them more portable and convenient, especially for travel. If you’re interested in waterless beauty products, listed below are a few of the best to try. Charlotte Tilbury’s Instant Magic Facial Dry Sheet Mask is infused with vitamins, peptides, nourishing oils and floral extracts. It hydrates your skin in just 15 minutes, is much less messy than a wet mask and can be used up to three times. PLUS’s Zero Waste Body Wash Sheets look like small dryer sheets that dissolve in water. Just open the package and wet the sheet, which creates a thick, hydrating lather for your skin. Even the packaging is dissolvable. Dew’s Mighty Bloom Jelly Serum Bar is a solid jelly bar that delivers skinnourishing vitamin C to hydrate and smooth, reduces redness and brightens your skin. Added chamomile and licorice extract, amino acids and squalane soothe redness, rebalance and repel dryness. Susteau’s Moondust Hair Wash is a wateractivated powder shampoo that works into a rich lather. It cleans without leaving hair frizzy and contains aloe vera to hydrate the scalp and rice protein to enhance volume. One 2-oz. bottle is equivalent to four 8-ounce bottles of liquid shampoo. Glow Recipe’s Watermelon Pink Juice Moisturizer has a feather-light feel that glides on like a serum and absorbs quickly. It contains hyaluronic acid and jasmine and peony extract. Watermelon is known to calm irritation, quench your skin and add vitamins A, C and E.

Next Generation

OF PILATES REFORMERS IS, OF COURSE, ‘SMART’

t was inevitable that smart technology came for the Pilates reformer, invented a century ago and a key piece of equipment for a form of exercise once again gaining in popularity. The result is a pricey, slick machine that can nearly recreate the experience of in-person instruction at home. Several corporations have put their versions on the market, and they vary in price and features, but all are intended for use with video-based instruction that require a monthly fee. Pilates is a fitness genre where proper form is especially important to activate your core during essential positions like neutral spine and tabletop legs, and many instructors recommend clients at least start out with an in-person class. But depending on the instructor and the size of the class you might not get that much personal attention. The ability to pause and rewind the workout video so you can truly go at your own pace can compensate for the lack of a real-time teacher. It’s essentially a matter of what you’re comfortable with and where you want to spend your money. Here’s a rundown of the features of some of the latest and greatest in “smart” reformers. REFORM RX The RX Reformer is at the top of the pile in terms of price (just shy of $8,000) and functionality. It comes with a detachable 21-inch touchscreen with access to unlimited and unique workouts (with subscription) and has “Smart Spine” technology that measures calorie burn, heart rate and power output, the last of which is an important measurement of the core strength Pilates is focused on. Monthly subscriptions run $39.

FRAME This sleeker, lower-profile machine comes in coral or black tones that will look great in any home interior. It’s got a 24-inch screen and scads of content but doesn’t offer Reform RX’s biofeedback data. It does have color-coded spring weights controlled by the push of a button to simplify resistance adjustment. It was designed by a renowned Pilates instructor and costs half as much as the RX Reformer, though that’s still $3,995. Monthly subscriptions are $39. FLEXIA This device lacks a screen, which its makers reason could never be positioned so that anyone in any position would be able to watch it during use. What it does have is a series of sensors measuring control, consistency and speed to provide you with a “movement quality score” after each workout (visible in the app on your phone or other devices). This one is sold for $2,995. Monthly subscriptions are $39. LIT AXIS If you don’t have the space, funding or level of commitment required to buy a smart reformer, check out this next-level resistance band set that can give you a Pilates-inspired session at a fraction of the cost ($159, with $10 monthly subscription). It can be anchored nearly anywhere, and its sensors track reps, identify muscle imbalances and correct your form.

Microcurrent Facials

I

STIMULATE SKIN & MUSCLES

t’s no secret that working out keeps you in better shape. But what if you could give your face a workout to keep it looking good? For many people, Botox is the answer. But with microcurrent technology, that facial workout is now a reality. Microcurrent facials employ a mild electrical current to stimulate facial skin and muscles. The treatments are non-invasive and a single session can target sun damage, rosacea, low-grade inflammation, rough texture and even sagging skin. Technically, microcurrent facials are a form of muscular re-education for the face with 32 different facial muscles manipulated during a session. This helps with fine lines and wrinkles, firms your skin and defines features like the jawline and eyebrows. Microcurrent was first used in the 1980s to stimulate muscles in people with conditions like Bell’s palsy. Once the face-lifting effects were apparent, it didn’t take long for the beauty industry to claim it. Electrical current runs between positively and negatively charged conductors, usually long, slender rods. (At-home devices have more userfriendly shapes.) When both are in contact with your skin, current flows through the muscles, toning them. So, you’re not actually working the skin, but the muscles beneath.

72

Northern A Z Luxur y L iving VOL. 3, NO. 6

And like sculpting your muscles in the gym, these electrical pulses stimulate your facial muscles, giving a more toned and lifted appearance. The benefits are immediate and cumulative. Microcurrent facials also double as lymphatic drainage massage for a less puffy appearance. They boost circulation and stimulate collagen and elastin production. Microcurrent isn’t painful but because treatments vary in intensity, at the higher end of the scale you may feel tingling or a twitch from the current. At-home devices use a lower electrical charge, so you shouldn’t feel anything. Since they use less charge, experts recommend threeto six-minute treatments twice a month for a few months. For professional treatments, experts suggest every four to five weeks in your 30s, every three to four weeks in your 40s or twice a month in your 50s for up to 15 treatments. Following that, maintenance treatment. These facials are relatively safe for most people, but experts warn if you are diabetic, pregnant, have epilepsy or heart issues (like a pacemaker), they may not be suitable.

BROW Lamination he style of the eyebrows changes constantly, just like hem lengths. Finding what looks right for your face and what’s on trend can be an adventure. One of the buzziest trends right now, often credited for the bushy but defined brows popular with celebrities and supermodels, is brow lamination. You already know the look: brows that look tall and straight as if brushed up with gel and will keep for days. The treatment consists of applying a gentle perm solution, neutralizing lotion and then a moisturizing treatment to temporarily relax and redirect your brows upwards. This technique is referred to as lamination since after applying the perm solution and neutralizing lotion, the brow area is overlaid with plastic wrap to boost the chemical reaction. The resulting brows appear set in place, or laminated, once complete. Because the hairs are relaxed, they appear longer, giving the effect of a larger brow shape. Hair becomes more pliable after lamination, making this great if you are looking for a "fluffy" brow without the need for a brow gel. It also works if your natural brow hairs are curly, unruly or point downwards.

Once the solutions have treated the brows, the lifted and laminated brows can be groomed by waxing and tweezing to perfection. And although you may be tempted to try this at home, it does require the help of professional-grade ingredients so you’re better off leaving it to the pros, at least in the beginning so you know what to do. Best of all, the treatment only takes about 20 minutes, not including additional waxing or tinting, but at the most you’re out of there in 45 minutes. The treatment generally lasts four to six weeks and can even last up to eight weeks, so it’s definitely worth the time if that’s the look you’re after without all the fuss every morning.

Mixing WOOD

DESIGN

TONES CREATES VARIETY & DEPTH

O

ne home interior question vexing many people is whether and how to incorporate floors and furniture with different woods, tones and grains within a space. They could have a mix of purchased and inherited items they adore and prized hardwood floors that don’t match either. Or, they could be starting from scratch and debating

whether to buy a full bedroom set or furnish the room piece by piece. They know things don’t have to be matchy-matchy anymore, but won’t it be clashy-clashy? In a word, “No.” There are some guidelines to follow, but in general mixing wood tones adds a pleasing complexity and natural warmth to interiors. Here’s what to know:

VOL. 3, NO. 6 Northern A Z Luxur y L iving

79

DESIGN

IDENTIFY YOUR DOMINANT WOOD TONE It could be in your oak floors, walnut cabinets, pine dining set or maple dresser. Just figure out where your largest expanse of wood is. It could be in your hardwood floor, but if much of it is covered by area rugs it might actually be in your cabinets, largest piece of furniture, wood trim or somewhere unexpected. Once you do, it’s time to shop for contrast. Light and dark woods can bring your rooms to life, even if you just incorporate a rough-hewn picture frame. TAKE THE TEMPERATURE One way to make this process easier if you’re choosing new furniture is to try to match undertones of the wood within a room. These can unify light and dark woods into a cohesive whole.

80

Northern A Z Luxur y L iving VOL. 3, NO. 6

Most natural or clearvarnished wood is considered to have a neutral cast and can be paired with basically everything across the spectrum. But some do lean toward a warmer, orangey tone including cherry and mahogany. Different observers can see different undertones, so it’s sometimes best to just go with your gut, since you’ll be living with the result. Most “cool” woods obtain that undertone after they’re stained with a color that has gray or blue undertones, frequently including tones like charcoal, sand, bark or shell. POWER OF REPETITION If you’re working with floors and furniture you already own that don’t share the same undertone there’s no reason to give up. One way to make sure neither

one looks like an outlier is to not strand anything by itself. Each tone should be repeated at least twice somewhere in the space. Look for a ceiling fan that goes with your reddish-toned floors and a coffee table with the same cool vibe as the wood beams on the ceiling. It’ll be perfectly balanced in the end. GET GRANULAR The grain adds yet another dimension to your wood pieces and can create contrast and/ or continuity. Large, heavy grain patterns lend a rustic or casual ambiance while smaller, lighter ones tend to feel more polished and formal. Combine “grainy” and “nongrainy” wood for a balanced room, or pair cool and warm woods with similar grains for unity. Either way it’ll look fabulous!

hen it comes to decorating, many people find themselves drawn to gold-toned hardware for their kitchen or shiny, silver picture frames everywhere but may wonder if the look is over the top. There’s a lot of ground to cover between one gold chandelier and Versailles, so no need to be so timid with the metallic accents around the house. Let your love of gold, brass, silver, iron or other shiny things add a luxe cast to your abode, lifting the spirits and aspirations of everyone who taps the brass knocker on your door and steps inside. READ THE ROOM First, look at the colors already being used in the room to determine which metallic tones will be most complementary or be prepared to change things if you’re set on introducing a specific dominant metal. Warmer and earthier tones including pinks, browns, oranges, darker greens and yellows are generally considered more compatible with gold, brass and copper. Blues, grays, whites and blacks pair best with silver and chrome. Consider each case individually — a canary yellow lampshade on a brass lamp could seem overdone while it would effortlessly warm up a silver-toned base. FINDING FOCUS If you’re working in a space that doesn’t have any metal accents, start with a statement piece to set the tone. It could be a silver pitcher and tray in the kitchen, a gold-leaf wallpaper accent wall in the living room or a brass canopy bed in the bedroom.

Then work your way out with complementary but not identical tones, like an antiqued figurine near a shiny gold lamp or a brushed silver photo frame atop a glass desktop supported by chrome legs. Mixing metal tones within a space is even better, especially if you follow a few principles. MIXING METALS AND MOODS Combining metallic accents in the same room adds vitality and interest, but it’s best to do it with some intentionality. Choose a dominant tone that will provide around 60% of the shine, and make sure it looks good with the dominant colors of the space before choosing other metals/finishes. Translating the 60-30-10 design standard to this level often yields a spectacular result. You can also sprinkle several beloved heirlooms or new discoveries around the room too, turning the space into a treasure hunt of sorts. DOUBLE DUTY All of these metallic pieces are lovely in their own right, but they also can be used to reflect or redirect light around the room to brighten dark corners, infusing the air with glamour. Mirrors are the classic example, but try them on unexpected surfaces, like a ceiling. Silver and gold chandeliers, sconces and other light fixtures can reflect as well as add light. Even subtle touches like gold threads in a curtain or silvery paint in a wall hanging can add a magical glow to the space.

NeverLet your

Friend or Neighbor

Y

TOUCH YOUR ELECTRICAL

by Mario Traina and Amber Traina, Owners, Allied Electric

ou may have been tempted to call a friend or neighbor who knows electrical work to install your light fixtures for free or for a very low price. But the common sayings, “Cheap ain’t good and good ain’t cheap!” and “You get what you pay for” couldn’t be truer when it comes to hiring a licensed electrician who is properly insured. If not, it could cost you thousands more than you bargained for in the long run. No matter how large or small the project, it comes at a great risk. For one, neither a handyman nor your friend carries the proper licensing or insurance to keep all parties involved protected. If someone falls off a ladder or is injured in any way in your home, they can legally sue you.

84

Northern A Z Luxur y L iving VOL. 3, NO. 6

Never underestimate how much you know or trust someone because if someone is placed in a situation where they are suddenly faced with thousands of dollars in hospital bills and growing debt, they might just come to collect. Also consider that they aren’t licensed for a reason — they aren’t electrical experts and/ or aren’t being held accountable by legal authorities to act in your best interest. This means even if you hire an unlicensed yet knowledgeable electrician to work at your home because it’s cheaper labor, how can you trust they will be there for you if they make a mistake? We have heard too many stories of local unlicensed electricians who do work, make a mistake and stop answering phone calls

from the homeowner. Most unlicensed electricians who aren’t priced right cannot afford to come back for free to fix mistakes. Perhaps the most important fact is that electrical work is dangerous. One wrong move and someone could get seriously injured. If the work is done incorrectly, something gets overlooked, or work is done without addressing the root cause of an issue, it can become a fire hazard. According to the National Fire Protection Association, fire departments responded to an estimated average of 46,700 home fires involving electrical failure or malfunction each year in 2015–2019. Such electrical failures can be the result of faulty wiring or electrical fire hazards that haven’t been properly addressed.

CREATE A WOW FACTOR

f you’re thinking your home décor needs a lift but you don’t want a complete overhaul — look up. Your ceiling is waiting for attention and may be just what you need to brighten the look of the room. If designing your dream home, don’t neglect the ceilings. Considered the fifth wall, the options are endless — some needing extensive work and some only minimal effort. GLASS AND SKYLIGHTS Light, light and more light — it’s never a bad idea. If you have the architectural structure for a glass ceiling, it can open the space and add oodles of natural light. If converting the entire ceiling is a challenge, consider skylights. They can bring light into a room without altering the ceiling drastically. Use frosted or stained glass for an even more custom look. WOOD AND BEAMS Wood ceilings add warmth, beauty and a unique look to your ceilings. Opt for natural, stained or painted wood finish if covering the entire ceiling. Consider board and batten, shiplap, tongue and groove and beadboard. A wood beam ceiling is a stunning design adding texture and interest to any room with a raised or vaulted ceiling. Choose faux wood or new wood, but check for reclaimed wood to add even more character and history. TILES Another trend gaining attention in interior design is the use of ceiling tiles and mosaics. Cover the entire ceiling or choose specific areas. A tiled ceiling adds style and a contemporary appeal.

COFFERED This design has a grid pattern of wood beams either stained, unfinished or painted with optional molding. The contrast between the color and texture is what adds the drama. Usually square or rectangular, this ceiling is visually stunning and adds a sense of depth. CATHEDRAL/VAULTED This design dramatically expands the proportions of a room using two symmetrically sloped sides and optional exposed trusses. These lead the eye upward, causing the room to look bigger. HIGH Although standard ceilings are 8-feet, simply elevating the ceiling to 9 to 10 feet can dramatically change the look. The extra vertical space creates a sense of grandeur. CEILING ROSES If you are looking to add elegance, this is it. Ceiling roses include floral swirls, leaves and even birds. Originally designed to catch soot and heat marks from candles and gas lighting, they are now just a lovely way to accent a ceiling and add style. SUBTLE CONTRAST If you already have a room full of interesting elements, that doesn’t mean your ceiling has to stay white. Even a light gray or pale blue ceiling can add dimension and interest. A subtle texturing also can add interest without changing the color.

Quiet L uxury TO LAST A LIFETIME

T

his year’s trend of quiet luxury is more than a trend, it’s about choosing high-quality pieces built to last, with classic lines and neutral colors. It abhors clutter, adores tranquility and has much else in common with minimalism. What sets it apart, though, is putting greater emphasis on comfort and elegance, softening some of minimalism’s harder edges. CHOOSE EFFORTLESSLY COMFORTABLE FURNITURE You’ll naturally put a premium on comfortable seating, as quiet luxury also does, but that doesn’t mean choosing overstuffed sofas and chairs or anything else that seems to be trying too hard to please. Bulky, puffy profiles can overcrowd the room, and the filling they use typically doesn’t help our posture and back alignment either. Shop around for couches, ottomans and chairs with clean lines and highresiliency foam or another material that holds up under prolonged use. In short, you’re looking for quality merchandise, something you’ll be using for a long time that might even outlast you. These don’t come out of a box, and you don’t have to assemble them. They’re delivered in one piece, and you’ll be living with and hopefully loving them for decades, which is why classic, timeless styling is so important.

But one of the most important aspects when it comes to décor is creating a soothing, tranquil environment. These spa-like vibes can be generated with the use of neutral shades, especially beige, gray, taupe and off-white tempered with muted shades of naturederived colors like blue and green. This encourages relaxation and reflection, two gifts to be cherished in today’s hectic world. LIGHT IT UP Sunlight is the energy-saving, lifegiving source of illumination that should be maximized however you can do it, whether you’re adding mirrors or carving out new windows. But there obviously comes a point after sunset when you can’t rely on it anymore, so you’ll also need a mix of ambient, task and accent lighting to provide safety and comfort throughout your dwelling. It can be difficult to achieve on your own so don’t shy away from enlisting a lighting designer’s help. BUY LESS, FEEL BETTER It takes more forethought and money to purchase furniture that could become an heirloom, but its sustainability is more than worth it. You won’t have to cart it to the landfill in a few years and replace it!

EMBRACE NEUTRALITY The “quiet” in quiet luxury refers to several things including the lack of flashy labels in favor of subtler hints at quality and expense.

p U n e t r a m S A YOUR BATHROOM

t a time when convenience is key, homeowners are continuously looking for ways to make their lives easier. One way is through smart bathroom tech, which easily controls lighting, shower pressure and even flushing the toilet. Let’s look at a few of the most up-to-the-minute smart bathroom features you need for ultimate intelligent modern luxury.

SMART TOILET One of the most popular smart bathroom features, and who can argue, is the smart toilet. These include heated seats, adjustable water temperature, bidet, air drying and deodorizing functions. Some have automatic lids, automatic flush and a water sensor to save money and resources. The most impressive feature — it’s selfcleaning, making it worth every penny. SMART MIRROR Integrated with touchscreens, LED lighting and built-in speakers, they even provide current news and local weather. As you start your day, view your calendar and get traffic updates. Because many smart bathroom systems work together, your smart mirror can be the control panel for your smart toilet, shower system and more. And best of all, use your voice if your hands are wet.

SMART SHOWER For the ultimate luxury, use a smart shower and pre-set the water temperature and waterflow settings to your personal preferences. Using voice control, change things up midshower completely hands free. For the fun of it, change up the lighting colors and brightness as well. Many smart shower systems save on average 3% and up to even 50% of your monthly water usage, making it a plus in the desert portions of the state. HEATED FLOORS You haven’t felt the luxury of a smart bathroom until you’ve stepped out of the shower onto a heated floor. Radiant floor heating uses thermal radiation to generate heat. Finally, don’t forget warming drawers or racks for your towels and cooled cabinets for your face creams and medication.
