AND PLAN FOR A BETTER YOU
hese days, resolutions seem to be more of a tradition than a solid plan. Studies show that about 22% of New Year’s resolutions fail after the first week. But that’s no reason to skip planning for a better year. And honestly, resolutions and a firm strategy for a successful year are two different animals. It’s important to establish realistic goals for the best and most rewarding year possible.
by Valerie Demetros
Here are some points to consider as you plan: LOOK BACK Last year should be your starting point. Don’t focus on the coming year while dismissing what happened last year. List your accomplishments, achievements, mishaps and timewasters, then reflect on these to plan for this year.

RELATIONSHIPS CHECKUP Think about friendships to improve or relationships that have run their course, then make changes. Also, add important dates into your calendar including birthdays, anniversaries and other reminders to foster relationships and make things a bit easier.
watching TV, read a book or a do a crossword to relax. For more exercise, plan with a trainer for accountability. To be more organized, schedule writing holiday cards during summer or schedule holiday gift shopping every two months to prevent being overwhelmed in November.
FINANCIAL PLANNING First, create a budget for the upcoming year by setting financial goals and action plans to reach them. If you slack off on following investments or paying credit cards (why pay late fees?), work up a plan to be more diligent. Consider a financial planner to keep your spending and investments in check.
SHORT-TERM GOALS It may sound simple, but daily/ short-term goals are just as important as long-term goals. Build a daily schedule and try to follow it. Add your workouts, chores, vitamins, phone calls, family dinners, etc. Even though every day may not look the same, you’ll have a starting point.
BE REALISTIC If you’re overconfident while setting goals, you can get burned out before you even start. Do you really have time to work out for 90 minutes every day? On the other hand, planning too small can lead to procrastination. Try to find that sweet spot that’s more than you’ve been doing but realistically attainable. And remember, nothing is set in stone. Make a date to recheck every quarter and modify as your life evolves. The idea is to make your life better, not to overschedule and frustrate yourself.
BE A BETTER YOU Depending on your goals, establish specific habits to coincide with these. For more sleep, start a bedtime routine. Instead of

Success
uccess — it means something different to everyone. It can mean earning enough money, reaching your career goals or having a home and family. It is, in fact, more of a journey than a destination. And it is the journey that helps you along the way to reach your goals and thrive. Although it is personal and different to each person, there are still so many books out there claiming to have the answer to success. But rather than defining success, we do know that there are a few tried and true habits that many successful people have in common. And if you’re looking for success, perhaps adopting a few of these traits may steer you in the right direction. Be passionate: Do what makes you happy. If you can do what fills you with joy, and create a career out of it, you will be more creative, more motivated, more tuned-in and more likely to be financially and personally prosperous. Focus: This always precedes success, it requires a mission and a vision. And staying focused on your plan for success is crucial. If you can, take time periodically to assess where you are in your plan and what you need to do to achieve it. Keep your goal fresh and reevaluate when needed. Be persistent: Any great endeavor requires passion and persistence to be successful. Although you will experience setbacks and failures, you also will find success and triumph if you persist. Nobody ever won a race by giving up.
THESE TRAITS TO
Change your perspective: Sometimes along the journey, you have to change your perspective to turn a situation around. Don’t be afraid to rework your goals and plan. Being flexible can keep you from missing out on opportunities and being creative. Stop looking for the easy way: You need to put in the work to be successful, period. You won’t find success in a getrich-quick scheme. Ask anyone who has reached the level of success you seek and most of them will tell you it took hard work and dedication, not shortcuts. Build your expertise: There always is something to learn and improve upon. If you run online stores, test out different marketing ideas. If you’re a writer, attend conferences and meet and learn from other writers. Building your expertise requires effort, like taking classes and trying new approaches. Watch for advances in technology that will help you along the way. Enjoy yourself: If the journey to achievement becomes too tedious, succeeding becomes more challenging. You need to have some fun along the way — take time to enjoy the rewards of your journey and treat yourself. Getting out of work mode also helps you prevent burnout, which can have a negative effect on your success.

DEMYSTIFYING PRIVATE JET MEMBERSHIPS by Jordan Brown, CEO, Jet Agency
n recent years, private jet travel has become more accessible and appealing to a wider range of travelers. The pandemic contributed to a surge in private aviation use, highlighting the benefits of this mode of travel. As more newcomers experience private jet travel, they begin to notice the limitations of traditional options like commercial flying, chartered flights or aircraft ownership. This growing understanding has led to a heightened interest in private jet memberships, offering a premium, flexible and efficient alternative to conventional travel. Private jet memberships have gained prominence due to the many drawbacks associated with commercial flying, including long security lines, crowded terminals and inflexible schedules. While private aircraft charter offers flexibility, it can come with the hassle of additional costs when flights face disruptions. On the other hand, aircraft ownership involves significant expenses such as maintenance, crew salaries and storage, essentially making it a full-time commitment. Private jet memberships bridge the gap between charter and ownership by offering flexibility and access without the headaches of recovering flights or repositioning aircraft. However, it’s crucial to note that not all membership programs are the same. Many come with “hidden fees,” like annual dues, repositioning costs and interchange fees, which can add up and are often billed after the flight has landed. To combat this, newer programs emphasize transparency by charging members a fixed hourly rate for their flights, with billing occurring before the trip. This approach eliminates post-flight “hidden fees” and offers a more straightforward pricing structure.
24
Northern A Z Luxur y L iving VOL. 4, NO. 1
Travelers are drawn to private jet memberships for the tailored experience they provide, emphasizing premium value and transparent pricing. The ideal experience is one free of complex pricing structures and surprises, and these memberships aim to deliver just that. Private jet memberships offer a more personalized and consistent travel experience, ensuring passengers are never left waiting on the tarmac. Members have the freedom to dictate their flight schedules to suit their needs, whether it’s a spontaneous getaway or a last-minute business meeting. These memberships also provide the perk of bypassing security lines, granting passengers expedited boarding through fixed-base operators, saving both time and frustration. Another advantage is the ability to personalize in-flight dining. Members can bring their preferred food and beverages on board, catering to their dietary preferences and cravings. So, is a private jet membership worth the investment? The answer depends on individual travel habits, priorities and financial considerations. Memberships offer a consistent travel experience, the assurance of flight recovery at no extra cost, easy-to-understand fixed rates, transparent billing and stress-free travel that commercial airlines struggle to match. The goal is to provide a seamless experience. Private jet memberships cater to the needs and preferences of discerning travelers seeking premium value, flexibility and efficiency in their journeys, making them a game-changer in the world of travel.

N
o matter where you are in Arizona, one of the biggest events of each year happens in Scottsdale. The Barrett-Jackson Auction brings people in from around the state as well as all over the world to buy and sell vehicles, new and old. Since its launch in 1967, the event has grown into the international event of the year. The auction takes place at Westworld of Scottsdale, 16601 N. Pima Road, Jan. 20 to Jan. 28. In 2022, a 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupe sold for about $143 million, making it the most expensive car ever sold at auction. If you’re thinking about attending, here are a few tips. SKIP THE LINES Avoid the long box-office lines and buy tickets in advance. Print them or use the AXS Tickets app. Tickets on the app can be transferred. SKIP YOUR CAR Consider a rideshare to avoid the parking hassle and shuttle to and from the event. There are designated spots for rideshares. SKIP THE RAINCOAT Even if the skies open up, rain can’t hinder this event. With most of the auction under cover, you’re good to go.

Clear bags can be up to 12”x6”x12” (about a one-gallon storage bag) Heads up, no diaper bag unless clear and within guidelines. SKIP THE SNACKS Only one sealed water bottle per person under 17 ounces is allowed.
GET AN EARLY LOOK The first two days are QuikTrip Family and Preview Days. There’s no live auction, but you can get an advanced look. Children 12 and younger are free (all other days are 18+ only) and can ride the Thrill Ride or Hot Lap. t’s the beginning of a new year, and if you’re working with a wealth or financial adviser you likely have scheduled or held your annual planning meeting. These meetings help you review the state of your assets, set financial goals, discuss allocation of your investments toward reaching those goals, and review any changes over the last 12 months. When your investments are relatively straightforward and you’re able to track them through apps or other platforms that may be the only meeting you need. But other circumstances often call for more frequent appointments to assure you and your adviser have all the information you need and can make any necessary adjustments to keep your net worth growing as much as you need it to. The factors to consider include: FREQUENCY OF COMMUNICATION How often do you hear from your adviser over the rest of the year, and how easy is it to connect when you need to? Many advisers put a high priority on keeping their clients updated through emails or text messages to keep them abreast of financial status, new products and other important information. If they don’t often communicate with you outside of meetings, you may want to schedule more of them (or consider switching to someone who’s more available). HOW CLOSE YOU ARE TO RETIREMENT In the prime of your working years, and while you’re raising a family, you need to keep most of your attention on day-to-day budgeting — your adviser is there to tend to you and your family’s longer-term future.
Once your expected retirement draws closer to reality, say about five to eight years out, you and your adviser may want to set up a quarterly schedule at minimum to stay abreast of changes in goals and circumstances. MAJOR FINANCIAL OR LIFE CHANGES There are a number of choices or changes in your life that may be triggers for more communication with your wealth advisers: birth, marriage, divorce, major health care expenses, death, job change or loss, relocation, buying a home or car, inheritance or sale of major assets. It’s not fun to have to deal with many of these, especially if you’re low on cash and additional sessions will cost you more, but it will help you in the long run. PORTFOLIO MANAGEMENT If you have a large investment portfolio with multiple types of assets it’s a good idea to set up additional meetings to manage the complexities that come with it. Any changes in your goals, risk tolerance, tax exposure, insurance needs or other facets can throw off a carefully balanced portfolio and have ramifications years down the road. FACE-TO-FACE OR VIRTUAL You probably have your own preferences when it comes to the convenience of phone or video calls versus the connection of meeting in person, but since these meetings are going to have an impact on your future it’s a good idea to have at least one or two in-person encounters per year.

For one thing, going on trip brings a sense of joy and anticipation as soon as it is decided. If you plan early, you have that much more time to research where you are going and all the sights you want to see. The whole family can participate in the planning. Let the children research your destination and see if they can find activities and places they want to visit. If you book in advance, most of the time you can ensure your room at the hotel of your choice, or homestay. You can choose among different types of rooms, the view you want and other details up front. By booking just before your trip, you risk losing out on many of the choices you could have had. The same goes for airline tickets. Booking early eliminates the risk of not finding flights on the date you want, higher costs, and if you like to fly first-class there may not be any seats remaining. The memories you’ll make on your vacation are priceless. But the vacation itself requires a financial investment. One of the major benefits of planning a trip in advance is having time to save up for it. If you plan in advance and realize you really want to stay in that castle in Scotland, you can make sure you have the money for it rather than opting for something less expensive and less exciting.

Some people plan years in advance for vacations just to make sure they can travel without money restrictions or other hinderances. On top of planning travel ahead with booking in mind, it’s important to know up front who is going with you. Deciding in advance gives everyone a chance to plan. Whether that means vacations from work, scheduling for a house sitter or even getting a pet sitter, these things take time. And now that you know who is tagging along on the adventure, planning ahead gives everyone time to thoughtfully consider where they’d like to go and what they’d like to experience, as well as their ideal time frame. Once you decide on dates and a place, it’s time to do some research. Since you planned in advance, you can spend the time leading up to your trip diving into novels, movies, maps, cookbooks, destination guides and grilling your friends who already have been where you want to go. Traveling somewhere to experience a special or seasonal event is packed with adventure. It can also pose challenges like sold-out hotels, booked restaurants and sold-out event tickets. If you planned well in advance, you’re sure to be all set. Spontaneous adventures where you just wing it and go with the flow have their charm. But planning ahead for a vacation getaway means you can just sit back and relax with the knowledge that everything is taken care of. And isn’t that what vacationing is all about?

TO A LUXURY DIGITAL DETOX RETREAT,
W
Pronto!
e all are unduly tied to our phones, but the end-of-year holidays might be the worst time of all. We coordinated plans for festive get-togethers and took tons of photos. We did our last-minute online shopping; checked flight schedules; and coordinated gift-giving with friends and relatives. This makes the first quarter of 2024 an especially perfect time to plan our escape to a luxury digital detox retreat to regain the upper hand in our relationship to screens: LOIRE VALLEY LODGES — ESVRES, FRANCE Treehouses perched 13 feet above the ground give guests a literal bird’s-eye view of 740 acres of tranquil woodland, equipped with a Jacuzzi and terrace. Televisions and Wi-Fi are nowhere to be found, and phones are replaced by radios that put you in contact with the staff. There are more than enough activities and spa treatments to keep you happily occupied in their absence — swim or relax by the 65-foot pool or have a sound bath or massage delivered to your “nest.” PINE CLIFFS RESORT — ALBUFEIRA, PORTUGAL This beloved wellness escape sits on a spectacular beach in Algarve, which stretches across the southern tip of Portugal underneath those spectacular cliffs.
It offers a three-day digital detox package for which the staff will stand guard over your phone so you can relish 72 hours of in-person pampering, complete with crystal facials, ayurvedic massage, nutritious food and plenty of hot tub relaxation so you can reconnect with yourself, others and nature. RANCHO LA PUERTA, TECATE, BAJA CALIFORNIA This iconic retreat’s location just south of the border makes it convenient to Northern Arizona as well as for Hollywood celebs. The “ranch’s” 4,000 acres of wildlands, gardens, casitas, gyms, pools and spas will keep you busy and socialized enough to forget where or what your phone is. Cellphone use is prohibited in public areas; each guest is given a “sleeping bag” for their device upon arrival. WiFi is made scarce to encourage guests to cut the invisible cord and explore this paradise-like version of the real world.

Luxury Real Estate
F E AT U R E
D
DEPENDS ON EXCLUSIVITY, FEATURES
espite the current market conditions with high mortgage rates and low inventory, investing in luxury real estate is still a great place to park some of your savings. The housing shortage is expected to keep home values elevated, and if you have difficulty finding a buyer right away, luxury rentals will still be a draw for restless homeowners who’ve decided to wait out the interest rate surge. Better yet, you can live in it for a few years! There are many classes of real estate to look into: luxury homes, condos, even angling your custom build for greater rewards five or 10 years down the line. But you need to be selective — it takes more than a high price for a home to be a luxury residence. There are other “it” factors a property needs to draw the high-end buyers and tenants who will give you that great ROI: LOCATION This includes the surrounding environment as well as location in relation to amenities including fine shops, restaurants and services. Preferences for climate and scenery vary between buyers, but certain features are nearly always going to be an asset like water or mountain views or a skyline in major metro cities. But they should also be convenient to the amenities that make a neighborhood and community strong: good schools, fine shops, services and restaurants, engaging activities and convenience to airports for longer-distance getaways. EFFICIENT SPACE Large lots and generous square footage are valued by many luxury buyers and keep
36
Northern A Z Luxur y L iving VOL. 4, NO. 1
home values high. That said, smaller, more manageable properties hold a lot of appeal as long as they’re smartly designed. Overabundant storage or office space could be seen as a drag on the space by some shoppers, but floor plans where that area can incorporate overthe-top amenities like a home gym or theater without giving short shrift to the bedrooms or kitchen are a prize that should be snapped up. EXCLUSIVITY Most luxury buyers want convenience to amenities but still value privacy and security. Well-monitored gated communities encompassing golf clubs, fitness centers, spas and even restaurants or shops are going to be especially good for your bottom line. Security features go hand-in-hand with and include smart home features and alarm systems, but availability of private security services and top-notch first responder agencies matters. EXTRAORDINARINESS This is as a catchall for all of the other pieces that fit together in various ways that elevate a great home into a luxury residence. Impressive architectural features like floorto-ceiling windows, an expansive entryway or a layout that integrates indoor and outdoor living earn lots of points, especially when designed by a noted architect. The materials in the home need to be of the highest quality and durability. Sustainability through features like solar panels, harvested rainwater and backyard gardens is increasingly in demand. Look for homes and lots full of tangible and intangible facets that create an opulent world of its own.

ealth and success are frequently indicated by flashiness, even back in ancient times. Your status was determined by the number of jewels you wore or these days by how many logos you wear. Lately, prestige dressing is being hidden in plain sight. Quiet luxury is all about neutrals and classics elevated with upscale fabrics and flawless tailoring.

LIFEST YLE The style relies on wearing classic investment pieces that don’t go out of style. Quiet luxury isn’t flashy, but instead takes a less-ismore approach focusing on design, construction and wearability. Of course, trendy and flashy logos don’t need to be kicked to the curb. Just wear them minimally and with thought. A handbag with a logo works with an understated luxury outfit much better than a flashy logo-filled ensemble. To help build a quiet luxury wardrobe, let’s start with a few classic pieces worthy of investment. CLASSIC BLAZER Choose something quintessentially preppy or a solid basic. A good linen-blend blazer can top an outfit with simplicity yet sophistication. J. Crew makes a classic blazer perfect for your new wardrobe. Pair it with a structured slack or a mini skirt.

SLEEVELESS MIDI DRESS Perfect for an event or a night on the town, choose a dress with style that can be dressed up or down as the day progresses. Add a blazer, cashmere wrap or trench coat to this versatile staple in your wardrobe. Victoria Beckham’s Two-Way Zip Sheath Midi Dress is a crisp and elegant dress with a classic fit.
Dutti’s Buckled Cage sandal for a timeless look to wear for years.
TAILORED PANTS For most occasions, well-fitting slacks look better than sweats or leggings. You can find designer classic slacks just about anywhere, just be sure and choose highquality fabrics. And don’t be afraid to have them tailored to fit. Giorgio Armani’s Tailored Straight-Leg Pants are a good start.
TANK SHIRT Find a tank top that is tasteful and enduring in a knit or cashmere for a touch of elegance. Top Nili Lotan’s cashmere tank with a pair of lowslung trousers and ballet flats for a casual, sophisticated appearance.
FLAT SANDALS Choose a minimalist pair that work with everything from pencil skirts to shorts. Try Massimo
BALLET FLAT Find a pair of ballet flats without flashy logos, like Christian Louboutin’s or Tori Burch’s, and pair them with a denim skirt and sundress for a casual look or tailored slacks for an ageless silhouette.
CASHMERE SWEATER For a definitive look that never goes out of style with a subtle, luxurious feel, you can’t go wrong with a touch of cashmere. Choose a traditional crewneck or a modern style with a pop of color like magenta or cinnamon.

MEN ROCK CASHMERE SWEATERS by Blake Herzog
ittle is quite as luxurious as it feels as the classic men’s cashmere sweater. Whether it’s a turtle- or mock neck, crewneck, V-neck or vest, these sweaters are woven to flatter the physique while looking and feeling divinely soft and supple. They’re also one of the most versatile garments a man can own despite their preppy overtones. Here are just five suggestions for this four-season charmer: UNDER A SUIT When you layer a sweater over a dress shirt and under a suit, it gives you the same polish and elegance as wearing a tie without the hassle of tying it and the constriction around your throat. Choose a sweater in a contrasting color to make its sheen and quality show in sharper relief. WITH A BASEBALL CAP This combo is modern and casual but still has some classic overtones. It’s more effective when the cap and sweater are the same color, and when they do it gives you more license with the logo on the cap — almost anything will work. UNDER A LEATHER JACKET If wearing cashmere with a buttondown shirt, jeans and loafers makes you feel a bit too basic, throw on your sexiest leather jacket to give yourself some edge. There

are even a few cashmere and leather jackets on the market if you’re looking for something smooth yet spiky. AS YOUR BASE LAYER Cashmere’s inherent warmth and softness is something you want to have next to your skin (or at least over an undershirt). It’s a great choice as your base layer on those days when you’re going to be going inside and out or you’re dealing with variable temps — especially if it’s a turtleneck. WITH COWBOY BOOTS This one may seem like a little bit of a stretch but cashmere looks great with jeans and so do cowboy boots, ergo, they can be part of the same practical yet elevated ensemble.

ith a new year comes resolutions, expectations and a desire for change. Health habits, organization and fashion all fall under this category. With clothing, usually the new year starts with articles about dressing for success. A different way of looking at this is using color choice to promote luck and happiness in the new year. Whether or not you are a believer in this, choosing the correct color to wear can make you feel energized. For many, red is considered the color of success. Most political candidates wear a red tie to convey power and success. Most politicians will wear a red tie during debates or other campaign events. For women, red is the color for Christmas, and in Chinese culture red is associated with good luck. It can’t hurt to find the shade of red that suits you best. White no longer is a color for summer. Perfect timing for our fashionable winter whites — white is a color associated with new beginnings. Besides a traditional white blouse, many leather and faux leather jackets are available in white. Purple is a color that is traditionally associated with royalty. The British monarchy uses purple in crowns and other vestments to signify dignity and power. With so many shades of this popular

color available, you can find purple as an accent color and also a choice for a handbag or even in a sweater or a fun pair of boots. Summer and fall of 2023 saw green stand out as a very popular fashion color. As 2024 gets underway, green is still going strong. According to ColorsExplained. com, green traditionally means harmony, growth, freshness and energy. We bring plants into our homes for a reason, why not add some green to your wardrobe as well? From olive green to evergreen there is a shade for everyone. If you are looking for a feeling of calm and tranquility, blue is the color for you. Blue is the color of the sky and of the ocean and has long been associated with peace. Both a light blue and a navy blue serve this purpose. Instead of using black as your main color to accessorize with, change it up with blue. This color comes in so many shades and is flattering on many different skin tones. It’s the perfect time to try something new!

START STOCKING YOUR
T
Gift Closet
he holidays are over and it’s time to get back to your usual day-to-day existence. If you have a gift closet, it has probably been depleted by now. If you don’t have one, why not? Basically, a gift closet is a stockpile of gifts. It guarantees that when life throws you a gifting opportunity, you’re not left with nothing or having to shop in a last-minute frenzy. A gift closet can be an actual closet or a cabinet — wherever you have room. It’s what’s inside that counts. First, start with a list of birthdays, anniversaries and milestones coming up. This lets you keep an eye out for specific gifts throughout the year. And although you may be shopping for specific gifts, the gift closet is all about the generic. Gifts like wine, candles, pretty napkins, tea towels, etc. make the perfect gift when you are in a pinch. Make sure you have gifts for adults, kids and even pets to cover all bases. New baby gifts, books for young children and pet treats all come in handy. Try to make gifts useful and something you may have already liked and tried. Although you want something that can be used for a few people, don’t go overboard in buying the same gift. The gifts should be nonperishable or with a long shelf life, and find gifts that are not size specific, like
scarves, shawls, earrings and hair accessories. If you happen to be out and see something unique, grab it and store it in the gift closet. Odds are it will be needed in the future. Shop local art festivals and sales to find different and useful items that look as if you picked them out specifically. Try to choose items that you find beautiful and interesting. While you’re shopping, make use of Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales to stock your gift closet. Take advantage of sales as much as you can to be efficient and creative. Don’t forget the wrapping essentials. You’ll need tissue paper, wrapping paper, scissors, tape, gift tags, ribbon (a few kinds), gift bags, pens and markers, postage stamps, tins, baskets and other interesting vessels to hold gifts. Once you stock your gift closet, it will come in handy much more than you realize. Last-minute hostess gifts are a cinch when you already have a fun kitchen accessory to grab. Additional gift occasions include housewarmings, birthdays (adult and child), co-worker promotions, new babies, new pets, unexpected holiday guests or an unplanned hospital visit. You’ll be surprised how handy your gift closet becomes.

‘Sandwich’ YOUR OUTFITS FOR SUREFIRE SUCCESS
I
f you’re always trying to style yourself for a fashion triumph but feel like you aren’t quite hitting the mark, consider “sandwich dressing.” Its only relation to the everyday diet staple is in its construction — two similar items on the top and bottom with something else in the middle as the “meat.” This imposes a sense of balance and cohesion in your overall look. There are multiple dimensions you can work with on your way to assembling the perfect outfit, but we’ll focus on the two most common. Before you know it you’ll be pulling it off on two levels at the same time! COLOR This is the simplest way to sandwich, and you may already be doing this subconsciously by pairing a crisp white shirt and gleaming white sneakers with purple slacks, or a gray sweater and silvery heels with a denim skirt. If you’re a monochromatic girl or guy, think in terms of a neat belt to separate and reunify the upper and lower pieces of your figure.
48
Northern A Z Luxur y L iving VOL. 4, NO. 1
The contrast doesn’t have to be huge — if you prefer to stick to pale hues, you can still match pale blue shoes and shirt with khakis for an easy win. Dark clothes are trickier because the difference between colors isn’t as obvious, but as you’ll see there are other dimensions you can use to pull everything together. PROPORTION Taking note of the size and weight of what you’re wearing is just as, if not more, important than color. It becomes more of an issue in winter as we wrap ourselves up in cozy coats and sweaters. A heavy jacket or slouchy sweater can make you look top-heavy when thrown over skinny jeans and modest flats, so choose a pair of chunky boots instead, whether they’re edgy moto boots or sexy knee-highs. This works the same in reverse. If you’re ready to wear your favorite wide-leg trousers for some flowy fun, try them with a close-fitting sweater or blouse and a pair of ballet flats. You’ll be chic even if you need to wear a heavy coat outside.

e took a beautiful rail trip from rainy Salzburg to crisp and clear Vienna. We waltzed from the train to our hotel just 3 minutes from the central rail station, a hub where transportation to and from all parts of the city is easily arranged. Since this was my husband’s first visit to the city of Mozart and Freud, I left him in the center of town so he could explore the Spanish Riding School where the Lipizzaner stallions are pampered and to investigate other treasures at Hofburg. Impressive though this winter Habsburg palace is, I’d visited before so, leaving him behind, I jumped on a bus to Schönbrunn Palace, the Habsburg dynasty’s summer residence. Skipping the zoo in favor of art, beautiful baroque designs and the stunning gardens, I toured The Imperial Apartments, which seem familiar if you’ve been to the Hall of Mirrors in Versailles. My eyes needed a rest after all that gilt, so I gave in to a Viennese coffee and a piece of apple strudel at the cafe. Later that evening, I rendezvous with my spouse in front of the Vienna Opera to wander along the Ringstrasse, the beautiful boulevard that circles the historic area of the city. Although we skipped ticketed performances on our trip, I have attended both a service at the Hofburg Chapel, where the Vienna Boys Choir performs, and a Mozart opera on previous visits. Both of these events are treasured memories. We were off before noon the next day for Cologne, Germany. It was by far our longest train ride of the trip, taking nearly nine hours. The dining car didn’t offer a lot of selection, so we grabbed some fruit and premade salads before taking a taxi to our hotel. I dedicated the following day to shop, which there is plenty of on the mostly pedestrian streets all around the Köln Cathedral known as the Schildergasse. Cologne (Köln) is famous for Kölsch, a beer that must be brewed within 31 miles of the city to earn that name.
LIFEST YLE
Hey, it’s the Champagne of beers characterized by its clear color and hoppy flavor. The use of your coaster on top of the glass is imperative if you don’t want the server to keep topping you up. The Schildergasse is the busiest shopping area in Germany and also one of the oldest Roman era streets. With the cathedral towering as a landmark, we wandered up and down streets and in and out of wonderful one-of-a-kind boutiques. Sadly, WWII destroyed many of the historical structures that once graced this area bordering the Rhine. However, the magnificent cathedral, although hit 14 times during the war, did not collapse. The medieval stained-glass windows dating back to the 14th century were removed and reinstalled after the war. The train station next door, however, belching soot and exhaust over the centuries has blackened the sandstone surface of the exterior. Our final train was a quick dash from Cologne to Brussels, Belgium. Arriving on Sunday we joined the locals and walked in the beautiful fall afternoon along the river to the central square of Brussels, the Grand Place. Standing in the center and turning 180 degrees, the buildings blend one into the other in solidarity proclaiming her political importance and Gothic beauty. Both nights we were in Brussels we enjoyed seafood, slurping mussels and sopping up the broth with hunks of bread one night, and twirling pasta and langostinos the next. We took a dash to Bruges on our final day. I’ve been many times and always love walking on the cobbled streets searching for new chocolate flavors. The sun peaked out from the cloudy sky just long enough to snap one last reminder of this memory-ladened trip.

f you’re planning your first, second or umpteenth honeymoon, you may be dreaming of a place not overridden by tourists but still has fascinating sightseeing and high-end, service-centered hotels and resorts to make you and your beloved feel like you’ve died and gone to hospitality heaven. You might assume that isn’t a realistic possibility until you investigate locations like these, only to realize that sometimes you really can have it all: DOMINICA This is the least-visited of the Caribbean island nations, largely because its volcanic origins didn’t leave much room for sandy white beaches. But it’s been coming into its own as a hub for ecotourism, branding itself as the “Nature Isle.” The Waitukubuli National Trail weaves through 115 miles of virgin rain forest, and numerous hot springs bubble inland and even on the shore Beautiful and innovative hotels like Jungle Bay in Soufriere and the Cabrits Resort and Spa in Portsmouth can be your sweet, luxe home base. MADAGASCAR The island’s rich terrain and wildlife inspired a series of kids’ movies, and it’s just as thrilling for grownups. The rainforests depicted in the animated films are in reality just part of the story, as Madagascar also boasts highlands, deserts and savannah. Eighty-five percent of the flora and fauna here are found nowhere else on earth, so the two of you will truly be in a world of your own. The lagoon is perfect for scuba and snorkeling; you can see up to 40 meters deep from the surface. Trails wind through the island’s luxuriant vegetation, and you can visit sandy white beaches and brilliant coral reefs on the motu, or tiny islets, just off the coast. Le Taha’a by Pearl Resorts offers peak luxury whether you choose an expansive overwater bungalow or a beachside villa. SLOVENIA This Central European nation sandwiched between Austria, Croatia and Italy has ravishing snow-capped mountains, verdant fields and dozens of castles dotting this landscape. It’s an up-and-comer on the tourism scene that just scored its first threestar Michelin restaurant, Hisa Franko, but isn’t yet drowning in visitors, so catch it while you can! he charcuterie board, with its medley of delicious and complementary flavors and textures, has taken over the entertaining world for its ability to draw people together at any gathering. There’s a reliable formula for choosing the meats, cheeses and accompaniments that will succeed at this, so it’s wise to follow it pretty closely. We’re using “charcuterie board” here to include cheese boards that also contain meat — the terms are almost interchangeable but cheese boards generally emphasize cheese over meat, so if you’re making one you’ll want to reverse steps 2 and 3: 1. Choose the surface — Start with a clean, attractive serving board or platter that can accommodate your guests. Common choices include wood, slate and marble. A standard cutting board of 12x18 inches can accommodate four to six guests, and a 16x24inch one can feed about 15 to 20. For larger gatherings you can cover an entire table with boards or scatter them around the venue. 2. Select your meats — Choose a variety of cured meats, such as prosciutto, salami, chorizo, and coppa. These should be thinly sliced and arranged in an appealing manner. Consider different flavors and textures, from mild to spicy.
by introducing more unexpected options like edible flowers, caviar, mushroom caps or even pork rinds for the carb-averse. 5. Garnish with herbs — Sprinkle fresh herbs like rosemary or thyme on the board to add color and a hint of fragrance. 6. Arrange items strategically — Place the components on the board in an aesthetically pleasing way, creating visual balance and variety. You can either go for a more structured, organized look or an abundant, overflowing style, depending on your preference. 7. Add a personal touch — Customize your charcuterie board with additional items that suit your taste or the theme of your gathering. These could include roasted vegetables, dark chocolate, specialty crackers or fresh veggies from your own garden. 8. Consider dietary restrictions — If you’re serving a diverse group, make sure to offer some vegetarian or vegan options, such as marinated tofu or plant-based cheeses.
3. Add the cheese — Include a mix of soft, hard and semi-soft varieties. Common choices include brie, cheddar, Gouda, blue cheese and goat cheese. Slice them thinly in various shapes and sizes, and provide cheese knives or spreaders.
9. Pair with wine and other beverages — Charcuterie boards are most often enjoyed with wine. It’s easy to start to overthink which ones you should choose but most combinations will work, though you might want to err on the side of a lighter-bodied wine that works as well with delicate as with bold flavors. Don’t forget to offer nonalcoholic options like sparkling water or craft sodas as well.
4. Incorporate accompaniments— These can be fresh or dried fruits, nuts, olives, pickles, dips, bread and crackers. You can be more creative here
10. Serve with appropriate utensils— Ensure guests have cheese knives, small plates and napkins available to them, at a minimum. VOL. 4, NO. 1 Northern A Z Luxur y L iving

elf-care is essential, so why is it so many people think regular spa treatments are a luxury and not a necessity? Facials, massages, manicures, pedicures or any service that helps us feel better is somehow seen as something for special occasions, pampering, vacations or recovering from an illness. Some people even feel guilty admitting
they get regular spa treatments. As if getting massages or regular facials is over-indulgent and excessive. But that couldn’t be further from the truth. Monthly treatments should be a part of your overall wellness plan. Self-care is vital to your mental and physical health and comes in many forms. Whether that’s acupressure or massage.

WELLNESS Treatments like a monthly massage work together with a healthy lifestyle that includes a good diet and regular exercise. And if you are dealing with a chronic illness, regular massage and treatments can make a world of difference in your ability to live an active life. If you’re workouts are intense at the gym, regular treatments can keep you in top form and prevent injury. Massages and acupuncture can help to keep your muscles in shape and ready to perform. Many athletes swear by cupping as a way to pull toxins out and clean their systems. To alleviate stress and be the best version of yourself, you need to make time to de-stress. With spa treatments, you receive the power of touch from a therapist or esthetician. And just the transfer of energy can be enough to make a difference. One study found that therapeutic
62

touch had a direct effect on the brain, that oxytocin levels increased, heart rate dropped and a sense of trust and confidence increased. If you have trouble sleeping, monthly massage and facials may be just what you need. Sleep comes easier when you’re relaxed and your body doesn’t hurt — two benefits that massages and spa days provide. And when you’re able to get a good night’s sleep, you wake up feeling refreshed and can be more productive. Studies show that spa treatments like massages can decrease your body’s cortisol levels by an average of 31% while serotonin levels increase by 28%. Serotonin can help stabilize moods. This also promotes
healthier sleep patterns. The bottom line is that spa days force you to be more present, to be good to yourself. By taking care of yourself and being pampered, you’re now in a better position to view issues with a healthier attitude — you’ll feel refreshed and positive, and that can’t be a bad thing.

Acne Treatment WHICH

IS BEST FOR YOU?

rom high-tech procedures to specialized facial treatments, there are multiple ways to reduce or even eliminate the appearance of acne and acne scars. GENTLEMAN’S FACIAL TREATMENT Men’s skin care needs, influenced by higher testosterone levels, are distinct. This hormone makes men’s skin produce more oil than women’s, leading to clogged pores, acne and a dull complexion. A double cleanse with Osea Ocean Cleansing Mudd removes impurities and excess oil. Steam opens up the pores, making exfoliation more effective. Extractions clear out deepseated dirt, preventing acne. TEEN PURIFYING FACIAL This facial is tailored to address adolescent skin and its fluctuating condition. The treatment begins with a double cleansing process. Steam is applied, prepping the skin for effective exfoliation. A sulfur mask is applied. Sulfur is known for its potent anti-acne properties, helping to reduce inflammation and combat acne-causing bacteria. SIGNATURE HYDRAFACIAL™ The Signature HydraFacial™ is a potent solution. The treatment begins with a deep cleansing. The exfoliation phase
64
Northern A Z Luxur y L iving VOL. 4, NO. 1
removes dead skin cells, which can often trap oil and bacteria, leading to acne. By clearing this layer, the skin becomes more receptive to the subsequent extraction process, where advanced VortexFusing™ technology is employed to draw out deeper impurities. What truly sets this facial apart in addressing acne is its infusion of antioxidants, peptides and hyaluronic acid to nourish the skin and combat inflammation. SKINPEN MICRONEEDLING This procedure taps into the skin’s innate ability to heal itself. It intentionally creates minuscule injuries using fine needles. This controlled method stimulates the skin’s selfrepair mechanism, increasing
collagen production. Collagen, a vital protein, maintains skin elasticity and structure. The treatment addresses other skin concerns like hyperpigmentation, stretch marks, uneven skin texture and wrinkles. SIGNATURE DIAMONDGLOW® The Signature DiamondGlow uses diamond-tipped tools to gently exfoliate and remove dead skin cells. The extraction phase clears clogged pores. Post-extraction, the skin is primed for the infusion of nourishing serums, promoting a healthier complexion. LED Light Therapy targets and diminishes acne-causing agents. Skin is freed of breakouts and fortified against future ones.

High-End ORAL CARE BOOSTS HEALTH AND COMFORT
WELLNESS
V
isits to the dentist’s office border on the nightmarish for some people with all the scraping and drilling, and oral care at home feels tedious at best. But using the high-end, low-stress home products on the luxury market can make those dental appointments much less tortuous, free of the needles, root canals and tooth-pulling that make them so dreadful. Consistent self-care for your teeth is about much more than making those sixmonth and annual dental appointments easier to get through — it directly affects your overall health by halting bacteria and other infectious agents that could spread throughout your body and cause inflammation in the gums. These are suspected of contributing to heart and lung infections and disease, diabetes complications, birth defects and other maladies. Some products you should consider investing in are: SMART TOOTHBRUSHES Most low- to mid-range electric toothbrushes have some features that paves the way to proper dental care, including timers that keep you brushing for the recommended two minutes and sensors that alert you when you are using too much pressure on the brush. These are important reminders to have, but the most advanced models do much more for you. Many are connected to apps that can give you feedback after or even while you brush, nudging you to spend more time on problematic areas of your mouth, get tutorials on how to care for your teeth more effectively and even earn points for good dental care that can be redeemed on related products and retail partners. The ultra-connected ones can send info straight to your dentist and help you make appointments.
INTERDENTAL BRUSHES AND WATER FLOSSERS Compliance with the guidelines offered by experts to brush twice a day are pretty widely followed, but flossing at least once a day is a different story. Several studies put the number at around 30%. Newer, sleeker products have been coming online to make flossing more convenient and enjoyable. Smaller interdental brush attachments are available for electric and rechargeable toothbrushes, and water flossers send out a powerful stream of liquid that dislodges debris from in between teeth. Now there’s even a dental “shower” that attaches to your showerhead. ADVANCES IN TEETH WHITENING Tooth-whitening paste and strips are available everywhere dental care products are sold, but many consumers are demanding more effective treatments that get their pearly whites blindingly so while improving dental health. LED lights are now being included with home kits to make the process more efficient at home, though the most effective LED treatment will come from your dentist’s office. NATURAL INGREDIENTS Not all high-end tooth care is tied to tech. More people are seeking plantand earth-based ingredients for their dental care with products like charcoal powder for tooth whitening, baking soda for removing stains and harmful acids, and coconut oil, which may be effective at reducing plaque and preventing gingivitis.

Beta Hydroxy Acids EXFOLIATE Oily Skin
I
f you want clear, even-toned skin, just cleaning your face is not enough —you need to exfoliate. A formula with beta hydroxy acids (BHAs) is the best plan for acne-prone and oily skin. Not to be confused with alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), beta hydroxy acids are exfoliating agents that break down dirt and bacteria in pores. Unlike AHAs, which are water-soluble, BHAs are oilsoluble, which permits them to penetrate your skin’s oil glands to remove dirt and dead cells deep in the pores. Many ingredients are considered a beta hydroxy acid, the most common being salicylic acid. Derived from willow bark, salicylic acid has both anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. This helps exfoliate dead skin cells on the skin’s surface, treating active breakouts and discoloration. Other beta hydroxy acids include beta hydroxybutanoic acid, tropic acid and trethocanic acid. BHAs also can treat conditions like psoriasis, ichthyosis, dandruff, corns, calluses and warts on the hands. As a bonus, beta hydroxy acids are anti-inflammatory and less irritating than alpha hydroxy acids.
68
Northern A Z Luxur y L iving VOL. 4, NO. 1
They chemically exfoliate dead skin cells to promote a clearer complexion and reduce the look of hyperpigmentation while targeting congestion and dirt in pores with antibacterial properties, preventing future breakouts. Additional benefits include reducing inflammation of active pimples and reducing excessive oil production. If you’re thinking of trying beta hydroxy acids, it won’t be difficult to find. Products with salicylic acid like cleansers, serums, spot treatments and face masks are usually packed with it. Because salicylic acid works well with AHAs, you’ll often find them combined. Some products are formulated for daily use while others, like serums or masks, are meant to be used less frequently, so read instructions carefully. As always, a licensed dermatologist is your best resource. Beta hydroxy acid products can be drying and cause redness and irritation. In most cases, side effects tend to dissipate once your skin adjusts. The best way is to introduce BHAs is slowly, once or twice weekly and adjust accordingly.

hen you’re seeking improved overall health it’s easy to turn to your health care providers for pharmaceutical help or surgical interventions. But it’s even easier to pursue simple, nature-based actions and remedies to build a solid foundation for your body to function. You always have the option to pursue habits like these: CONSUME A BALANCED DIET Eat a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean proteins, choosing whole food ingredients whenever possible. Strive to cover half of your plate with vegetables. Limit your consumption of processed foods, sugary snacks and excessive intake of saturated fats while avoiding all trans fats. EAT MINDFULLY Pay attention to portion sizes and eat slowly to savor your food. Listen to your body’s hunger and fullness cues and learn what they’re telling you while assessing your body’s reaction to specific foods. Assess where the ingredients came from, how they were harvested and the distance they may have traveled to your plate. FOOD AS MEDICINE Specific foods are worth incorporating into your diet for their potential to improve your health, including probiotic foods like yogurt for gut health. Herbs and spices like turmeric and ginger have been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties. Herbal teas are known to promote relaxation. CONSISTENT HYDRATION Drink plenty of water throughout the day to stay hydrated; recommendations can vary and depend on whether it’s accounting for plain water or all fluids. Two of the most commonly used guidelines for drinking water alone are six to eight cups a day or to consume half your weight in ounces (so 150 pounds = 75 ounces).
WELLNESS
REGULAR EXERCISE Engage in regular physical activity, such as walking, jogging, swimming or yoga. Daily is best, but at a minimum, find time for 30 minutes five days out of the week. Choose activities you enjoy to make exercise a sustainable part of your routine. ADEQUATE SLEEP Aim for seven to nine hours of quality sleep each night, and do everything you can to create an optimal sleep environment by keeping your bedroom dark, removing all devices with screens and maintaining a cool but comfortable atmosphere. Maintain a consistent sleep schedule. STRESS MANAGEMENT Practicing such stress-reducing techniques as deep breathing, meditation or mindfulness can make a remarkable difference with how your body responds to interior and exterior sources of stress. Outside of your time devoted to these types of practices, take breaks and engage in activities you enjoy. EXPOSURE TO SUNLIGHT Prioritize moderate sunlight exposure for vitamin D synthesis and the benefits it has for your body, which include stronger bones, teeth and muscles, increased insulin sensitivity, reduced blood pressure and better cognitive function and mood. Use sunscreen to protect your skin when necessary. SOCIAL CONNECTION Maintaining contact with family, friends and neighbors is integral to mental and physical health. Loneliness has been tied to higher risk of mental illness, dementia and heart disease by the U.S. surgeon general. Share your feelings and concerns with friends or family and participate often in face-to-face socializing.

Mani/Pedis ARE GOOD FOR YOUR SOUL AND YOUR SOLE
onsider the mani/pedi. What may seem like an indulgence really is part of good health maintenance inside and out. Women want to look beautiful and men well-groomed, and both want to feel good. Manicures and/or pedicures help with: SKIN CARE The skin on our overworked hands and feet needs to be properly exfoliated to remove all dirt and grime and moisturized for softness and hydration. BLOOD FLOW The foot massages that come with these treatments help improve blood circulation. They can reduce pain and help our bodies distribute heat during cold weather. WEIGHT DISTRIBUTION Pedicures help level out the surface
of your feet and allow your weight to be distributed more evenly, which aids in good posture. CALLUSES These can be painful; a nail technician can remove them. PRODUCTIVITY The act alone of getting a mani and/or pedi means you are taking time out of your day to do something for you. Taking breaks promotes productivity. ANXIETY/STRESS During this time you must put your phone down, at least for the manicure. CONFIDENCE Choosing colors, designs, length and shape shows off your style and personality; shaking hands becomes a pleasure.
SELF-ESTEEM You are showing the world that you matter. And the compliments you’ll get are a bonus. As with all endeavors, though, be wise. Avoid nail salons where: • Nail technicians don’t have the necessary experience and/or license, if required. • Stations aren’t clean. • Nail technicians aren’t washing their hands between clients. • Dirty tools are lying around (if you get a lot of mani/pedis consider bringing your own tools). • Pedicure foot-baths and filters aren’t thoroughly disinfected between uses. Be careful. You don’t want a rough technician clipping nails, cutting cuticles and filing your nails causing lesions that could get infected. You don’t want to shave your legs ahead of time to avoid any bacteria from a footbath finding its way into a wound. Reconsider using a UV light dryer, which comes with the possibility of causing skin cancer and aging your skin. Remember, it’s not just pampering, it’s wellness!

SEA WATER

ver wonder why you feel so much better after visiting the ocean or swimming at the beach? There may be something quantifiable about it and not just that good vacation feeling. Thalassotherapy is an alternative therapy harnessing the soothing properties of the sea. The term comes from the Greek word “thalassa,” which means ocean. Although actual thalassotherapy dates back to the 19th century, the healing properties of the sea have been known for ages. It is a common alternative therapy in Europe, particularly in Germany and France. Some colleges of medicine in Europe even include thalassotherapy. The healing benefits have caused people to move closer to beach towns for their health and spas and hospitals to set up shop using seawater therapies. When a person’s skin comes in contact with seawater, the sodium and chloride penetrates and enters the body. From there, it affects skin cells by altering the pressure inside them, which in turn may inhibit cell death. Climatotherapy involves temporarily or permanently relocating to a certain climate to improve health. It is also a form of thalassotherapy. In a 2013 study on people who had moved near the ocean to treat psoriasis or psoriatic arthritis, participants reported marked improvement at various intervals. Air near the sea also tends to be cleaner than in cities. This is why some
people with asthma or hay fever can breathe more easily by the ocean. Today, thalassotherapy takes different forms and can involve simply breathing in the sea air, bathing, exercising, massages, applying products with sea mud and seaweed or taking supplements derived from sea products. Similar to balneotherapy, which involves mineral spring waters, thalassotherapy exclusively uses seawater. Proponents claim it is beneficial because seawater is high in a number of minerals like sodium, chloride, magnesium, potassium, calcium and iodine. A 2020 study investigated the effects of aquatic therapy in a seawater pool and found that participants saw improvement in pain, balance, mobility and fibromyalgia. Older research used a combination of thalassotherapy, exercise and patient education. These participants saw improvements in pain, lethargy and mental health. And it’s always a given that spending time near the sea is calming, listening to the waves is soothing and walking along the beach is therapeutic in many ways. But now you have even more reason to get to the beach. If you want to stay a bit close to home, Ancient Sea Healing Spa offers thalassotherapy treatments in Cottonwood, just outside of Sedona. www.ancientsea.com VOL. 4, NO. 1 Northern A Z Luxur y L iving

CONTOUR CUTTING
C
FOR HAIR ENHANCES FACIAL FEATURES
ontour cutting is a relatively new technique in the hairstyling world inspired by the rise of contouring makeup on the face to highlight some features while letting others recede into the background. In the cosmetics world, this is done by deciding where you want the focus to be and using lighter and darker shades to accomplish that, while with hair the goal is framing the face to accentuate the most attractive elements. It can be used with different haircut styles, such as pixie cuts, bobs or long layers. When you ask your hair care pro for a contour cut you’re not going to get a specific look, so communicating your expectations can be especially important before the scissors are whipped out. Hair contouring is a different technique that uses color to accomplish the same goal and can be used separately or in tandem with contour cutting. PUT YOUR BEST FACE FORWARD Contour cutting begins with the hairstylist analyzing your face shape, hair type and features to determine which ones should be heightened or softened. This
76

requires some level of trust, so you’ll probably want to go to a stylist who’s done your hair in the past with good results. It’s all about balancing and harmonizing facial features. It can involve softening sharp angles or accentuating certain features, such as cheekbones or jawlines. Different lengths and layers are strategically incorporated to create dimension and balance. Longer layers may be used to elongate the face, while shorter layers can add volume and movement. This allows for a personalized haircut that enhances your natural beauty. LIVING THE CONTOURED LIFE Since your haircut is going to be tailored to you, another aspect the hairstylist should take into consideration is your lifestyle including how much time you have for daily styling and upkeep and appointments for touchups so your hair will keep framing your face the way you want it to. Your hairstylist should know how to make the necessary adjustments to accommodate your needs.

Fireplace Upgrades
DESIGN
TO LIGHT UP YOUR DÉCOR
F
ireplaces, whether contemporary, bold or traditional, tend to be the focal point of a living room, bedroom or even outdoor patio. If your fireplace lacks that heart-andsoul vibe, it may be time to upgrade. Of course, fireplaces and mantels are excellent candidates for seasonal décor changes that give them a fresh look throughout the year, but what if that no longer helps?
If you’re not ready to renovate your existing fireplace, consider changing the mantel. Add a live-edge wood mantel for a fresh look or a stainlesssteel mantel for a contemporary feel. For a quick change to a wood or brick fireplace, you’d be surprised what a difference color makes. Paint the fireplace and mantel the same shade as the walls for a seamless cozy feel.
VOL. 4, NO. 1 Northern A Z Luxur y L iving

DESIGN If your fireplace is more decor than functional, add a casual stack of books, candles, plants and even sculptures. Add a fireplace screen if your décor can handle it. But if you’re planning a larger remodel, here are a few ideas: MID-CENTURY CONE If your home is mid-century, a modern cone fireplace can be just the ticket. It’s graceful yet fun and comes in different colors to fit your style. Place it against a painted wall for a pop of color and warmth, and since it’s freestanding, accessorize around it. RECLAIM STYLE In the realm of “reduce, reuse and recycle,” find a period-perfect mantel to give the room a sense of style and history. Find them online, in salvage yards and surplus auctions. Although they may need some TLC, it’s worth it for the one-of-a-kind vibe it adds.

PLAY WITH MARBLES For the wow factor, think about a marble fireplace. A dark marble against a light wall, or the opposite, can lend a sense of contemporary flair. Add modern furniture or vintage chairs for distinctive charm. RAISE THE ROOF Sometimes all it takes is raising the fireplace façade to the ceiling to upgrade from “just fine” to “no-nonsense gorgeous.” Since it’s up front, design with the style of the room in mind. And while you’re at it, bring one side to an angle for an asymmetrical look that grabs the spotlight. MODERN STEEL For the height of industrial and chic, consider cladding the exterior in stainless steel panels up to the ceiling. Add doors to reveal a T V.
ADD REFLECTION Add mirrors to the façade. These can open a room and reflect light and color. An added benefit — they make a room seem larger. SURROUND WITH STYLE It may just be that your fireplace is fine, it’s just the surrounding area that needs a facelift. Add built-in bookcases or shelves and upgrade these shelves with natural wood or metal. MODERN FLAIR For a fully modern look, designers still love the low-slung gas fireplaces filled with glass, available in beautiful shades of blue, black, clear and more. Additional fillers range from glass beads and large boulders to logs and metal balls resembling cannonballs. For a contemporary look, add large quartz crystal fireplace logs that reflect the glow of the flame.

Microwave Drawers: PROS & CONS
I
f you’re planning a new kitchen layout or are lucky enough to be remodeling an existing kitchen, sooner or later you’ll get around to appliances and their placement. And although microwaves are usually countertop or built-in versions, a new space-saving consideration is changing the game — the microwave drawer. Microwave drawers function as a drawer opening under the counter or below a wall oven. You open the oven by pulling it out and setting the food down into the microwave from the top. There are advantages and disadvantages to consider before choosing the drawer option.
ADVANTAGES 1. You gain countertop space. 2. You can design a range hood that adds style to the kitchen rather than adding a microwave above the stove. 3. Lifting items up can prevent potential spilling. 4. Kids and shorter adults can operate the microwave more safely, considering they don’t have to reach up. There is a lock if you need it. 5. It adds a sleeker more modern look because it doesn’t require a bulky trim kit.
6. Since it opens from the top and not to the side, the microwave drawer is easily accessible to everyone — even lefties. 7. Its style can work with any kitchen from farmhouse to modern. 8. These can be installed anywhere like islands, cabinets, sculleries or pantries. DISADVANTAGES 1. If your cabinet space is minimal, you lose some with the microwave drawer. 2. The price of a drawer microwave is considerably higher than a traditional-style microwave. 3. Your kids can now easily access the microwave if it’s not locked. 4. Depending on where you put it, it may not be large enough for big casserole dishes. 5. Because the magnetron is located on the roof of the microwave, it doesn’t have a turntable function. 6. You need to install a dedicated 120-volt plug as well as a supporting shelf or platform within the cabinet. 7. It can be finicky since you push a button to open it. If you force it manually, you’ll have broken tracks and potential problems.

f your home has become a mishmash of Chippendale chairs, minimalist tables, Colonial dressers, shabby chic curtains and art deco mirrors, don’t despair — you don’t have to pick a lane. You may have to pare down some of your styles to achieve a more harmonious indoor habitat. Yet it’s still very possible to mix contemporary and traditional-inspired furniture in the same home and even the same room. Staying within a few parameters will help everything coexist happily under one ceiling. NEUTRAL BACKGROUND Maintaining a neutral palette becomes important when you’re combining furnishings that bring contrasting shapes, lines or vintages. Whites, creams, grays, beiges, navy and black are the best backdrop for showing off the details and common elements of your décor without competing with it. DON’T STRIVE FOR 50/50 It may be tempting (especially if you have equal amounts of traditional and modern/contemporary furniture) to aim for a roughly half-and-half inventory in each space, but it’s rare to be able to create a cohesive look this way. It’s much easier to let one take the upper hand and find examples of the other that share some elements with the dominant theme, such as traditional furniture and accessories featuring clean lines that mirror modern furniture or contemporary pieces with more ornate touches that pair it well with traditional furniture.
START WITH A STATEMENT It can help when you’re putting your rooms together to choose a statement piece for each one to set the tone. If you have a Victorian-style sofa with scalloped wood trim and pink velvet upholstery, you can assume that traditional elements should dominate the space. But you can choose some modern furnishings that won’t clash with it, such as a coffee table with simple but strong lines and a similar wood tone to the sofa or small pieces of abstract wall art with pinkish highlights. PAY ATTENTION TO DETAILING Take into account any styling or sculpting on the walls that might tilt the feel of the room in one direction before you start. Baseboard and crown molding, especially if it has beading, egg-and-dart, dentil, elaborate millwork and other traditional flourishes, can make it difficult to pull off predominantly modern décor, though most can be removed with some effort. The more subtle trims and edges of a contemporary-styled home rarely put any boundaries on what kind of styling can be done in a room. BRIDGE WITH ACCESSORIES Use accessories such as rugs, curtains, lighting and decorative objects to bridge the gap between modern and traditional elements. A traditional chandelier or a modern floor lamp can help unite the two styles. Blend different styles of art and decor to achieve a harmonious look. Try pairing modern artwork with traditional frames or vice versa. Mixing artwork and decorative items can add character to your space.

TEXTURE BRINGS LIFE TO ANY SPACE
T
exture is an essential but often unexplored dimension of interior design. It enhances the tactile experience of a room and is just as important for adding visual interest to every setting. Texture is what makes a room appear cozy and inviting or sleek and exciting. The lack of it will leave it flat and “meh.” Texture, more than any other aspect of design, is what connotes and delivers luxury. SHAPING PERCEPTIONS Texture is a powerful tool for sculpting how people feel about a room, from sight alone before even being able to walk in and enjoy sitting on a plush velvet couch or walking across an exquisite wool rug. The visual is enough to build your anticipation and draw your focus, and your feet, into the space. Soon you are enveloped by delightful sights and sensations that assure you that you’re in a world of opulence. FINDING BALANCE Contrast is what brings excitement to a room, but it’s easy to overdo it with any element of design, including texture. You don’t need or want to try to unite every texture under the sun, no matter how large the space you’re working with is.
88
Northern A Z Luxur y L iving VOL. 4, NO. 1
Try highlighting a couple of high intensity textures, such as stone, marble, steel or brass and surrounding them with more subtle and natural surfaces like wood, cotton, sisal and yarn. A LIGHTING TOUCH There’s nothing tactile about lighting, but it’s still one of the most effective ways to create and emphasize texture in interior design. Depending on its intensity, light creates shadows and illuminates detail and shifts over the course of the day, depending on the use of natural and artificial light. It becomes even more effective when it’s coming from a dramatic fixture, such as a table or pendant lamp with a textured shade or a chandelier with crystal tiles or bubbles. FINISH IT UP Don’t neglect thinking about the kinds of finish used on your interior surfaces — they have as much impact on the final result as the objects themselves. Choose your wall paint finishes carefully because they set the tone for the entire room.
MINIMALISM BRINGS CALM TO YOUR BEDROOM by Blake Herzog

f you find yourself drawn to minimalist interiors and would like to adopt that aesthetic to your own home, the best place to start might well be your bedroom. Eliminating clutter and embracing simplicity and clean lines there may contribute to a better night’s sleep and a more serene, functional space. But there are a few changes you may need to make first to achieve the atmosphere you’re looking for: DECLUTTER This is the essence of minimalism. You may not be able to eliminate or conceal everything you want to for a fully unencumbered existence in your sleeping quarters, but do take a look at everything in and outside your closet to home in on your essential items. These are a bed, the clothes you wear at the very least once a year, one or two nightstands to hold and conceal needed items for sleep, a chair if you’ll use it and a modestly-sized dresser or wardrobe if you can’t fit all your clothing into the closet. Consider a houseplant or two, if it won’t be stressful for you to care for them and keep them healthy. SOFTEN Soft minimalism — which employs elegant curves, soft upholstery and textiles and muted neutrals drawn from nature —is ideal for creating the mellow, understated vibe you want to strive for in a sanctuary dedicated to rest and rejuvenation. Beds with soft corners, a curving headboard and somewhat overstuffed “cloud” furniture that appears to
“hover” just above the floor are perfect options. So are lightweight furnishings that lead to a lighter, airier atmosphere, preferably made from natural materials like rattan, bamboo, wicker, eucalyptus and cork. They can be easily moved out of the room when needed. LIGHTEN Natural lighting should be prioritized with large windows (an existing one can be expanded or a new one added) with lightweight treatments in the place of heavy, obscuring ones. The most minimalistic approach would be no treatments at all if it happens to work in your situation. If you need blackout curtains to sleep, look for a set that can be pushed aside or tied back to keep the window clear during the day. They should be a light neutral color to keep the space looking cheery. Keep artificial lighting soft and limited to what you need to get around the room safely. DECORATE Here, as with all other aspects of minimalism, you want to pare décor and ornamentation down to the essentials. Only bring in items that have meaning for you, not placeholders. Even then, they should still generally fit into minimalist standards — smaller and simple wall art that can have a few pops of color but ultimately contribute to the overall sense of calm you want to promote. Be judicious with any other decorative items that might create clutter. If you have some that you truly want to display and don’t work anywhere else in your home, you may want to cap them at a number that doesn’t clutter the bedroom.

or too long, wainscoting was considered old fashioned. Originally used as added insulation and protection from scrapes, the stylish paneling is gaining popularity once again. Wainscoting refers to decorative wood paneling on a wall usually reaching from the floor to chair rail height (36 to 48 inches). For rooms with high ceilings, wainscoting can visually make the room seem smaller. It also adds contrast and texture and even an architectural flair. And wainscoting isn’t just for dining rooms any longer. Any room, including bathrooms, closets and kitchens, can benefit from the style. Even hallways can get an

updated look with wainscoting. It can be left natural wood, painted along with the wall or covered with a contrasting color for a dash of style. If you’re considering wainscoting to elevate your home’s charm, there are a few styles to choose from: Tongue and groove is the most traditional style with vertical wood panels usually about 3 to 4 inches wide. Beadboard is another type of tongue and groove paneling with narrow vertical planks of wood about 2 inches wide with no overlap. Board and batten has wide vertical wood boards with narrow elevated trim pieces between each
board to cover seams. It works well in Craftsman-style homes. Raised panel wainscoting, one of the most traditional styles, has wood with beveled edges that resemble a series of cabinet doors. Flat panel wainscoting has large flat wood panels flanked by raised vertical frames. These work well with an Arts and Crafts or Mission style. Shiplap uses wood panels that overlap each other a bit instead of interlocking by tongue and groove. Traditionally, shiplap was used on boats, barns and cottages to protect against the elements. It’s popular today in Farmhouse, Craftsman and Coastal styles as well as Contemporary and Industrial.
