ABOUT THE COVER

Todd Blue Drives MERCEDES-BENZ STANDARD by Pamela Quigley

t’s no coincidence that Mercedes-Benz is on the cover of the luxury automotive issue. Flagstaff is home to the only luxury automotive dealership in Northern Arizona, the allnew Mercedes-Benz of Northern Arizona, a LAPIS dealership. Avid curator and car collector Todd Blue, founder and CEO of luxury brand LAPIS, has

reentered the retail automotive industry with his recent purchase of Mercedes-Benz of Northern Arizona. “In our exploration for this business, we found a great desire and need for sales and service in this territory, and we want to satiate that demand for central and northern Arizona,” Blue says. “We see a huge opportunity to represent Mercedes-Benz in this part of the country, and we enthusiastically cater to customers in Prescott, Sedona, Flagstaff and all points between. “Many customers have second homes here and we’re excited to care for them.” Blue purchased his first luxury automotive dealership in 2010. Over the next decade he built a luxury auto group from one to 20 dealerships representing 10 brands including Porsche, Audi, Lamborghini, Jaguar, Land Rover, Aston Martin, Audi, BMW, Bentley and Rolls-Royce. He sold the remainder of the business in 2020 and formed a new company by the name of LAPIS. Automotive retail will be at the forefront of LAPIS, which is solely focused on luxury brands.

“I’ve always aspired to represent Mercedes-Benz. I was a Mercedes customer before I got into the business,” he says. Blue say customer/dealer connectivity in automotive retail has been diluted in recent years by the public company and other automotive conglomerate acquisitions of dealerships. “This has caused a distancing from the customer, which was not the original intention of the franchise system,” he says. “The dealership model was set up for franchised dealers to have direct relationships with their customers. I’m very passionate about making that happen again. “Since I have been out of the business, I have seen this relationship change. This is where I see an opportunity to improve what the customer should expect from a luxury provider. This is why I’ve re-entered this space. I want to reconnect with my customers.” Blue’s passion for Mercedes-Benz and his customers is undeniable. “This is an incredible community of outdoor enthusiasts, and our passenger SUVs and Sprinter vans compete on every level for lifestyle fit, utility and luxury value.” VOL. 4, NO. 2 Northern A Z Luxur y L iving

GO FAR BEYOND COMFORT AND LOOKS by Valerie Demetros

T

he world of luxury cars is filled with glamour, style and comfort. Luxury autos exude sophistication and style with their sleek design, state-of-the-art connectivity, cushy interiors and precision engineering. It’s no longer just a way to get from A to B. Owning a luxury car brings personal satisfaction and let’s face it — it just feels good.

McKinsey reports that trends are reshaping premium auto development continuously, which explains why the luxury car market is set to experience growth rates from 8% to 14% annually through 2031. Trends to watch for include such premium features as artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning and retina recognition. As the

F E AT U R E government establishes stringent emission standards, luxury car manufacturers are leaning toward more electric vehicles to cater to buyers’ needs. In 2022, the global luxury car market was valued at $617.36 billion. This is expected to expand at a compound annual growth rate of 6.9% from 2023 to 2030. Fortunately, 2024 promises to be an exciting period for the luxury car market with several distinguished manufacturers launching highly anticipated models. These are generating considerable buzz since they are expected to incorporate cuttingedge technology, innovative design features and enhanced performance capabilities. For instance, the 2024 BMW 5

18

Northern A Z Luxur y L iving VOL. 4, NO. 2

Series is up for a new generation. It promises a curved display with iDrive interface and a roomy comfortable cabin. In addition to the core models, BMW will debut an all-electric variant called the i5. Get it with single or dual motor and up to 590 hp. Starting at $57,900. Cadillac’s new EV lineup started with the 2023 Lyriq SUV and continues with a flagship sedan called the Celestiq in 2024. Its sleek lines, sweeping roof and bustle rear end make it a head-turner. Customers can design their own, similar to the Rolls-Royce method of bespoke production. It has all-wheel-drive electric drivetrain and a driving range of more than 300 miles. Starting at $300,000. The Genesis GV90, with its sleek, athletic coupe-like silhouette, is

being called one of the best luxury electric cars in 2024. The full-size SUV blends striking aesthetics, a spacious interior with lavish features, cutting-edge technology and sophisticated driving dynamics. The GV90 is also the biggest model to date with seating for up to eight passengers across three rows. Starting at $70,000. One trend to watch for is increased vehicle leasing perks. Many people, especially those in large metropolitan cities, are beginning to question whether they need a full-time vehicle going forward. Luxury manufacturers are working with this trend, offering concierge services and additional advantages to leasing their vehicles, like reduced interest rates and cashback offers.

s luxury compatible with sustainability? Each day the answer leans more toward yes. So many luxury companies are making strides in sustainable vehicles. In today’s world, being environmentally conscious is more important than ever. One way to contribute to the environment is by driving eco-friendly cars. Luxury eco-friendly cars reduce emissions while offering the lush features you demand. Among hybrid luxury vehicles, you’ll find Porsche, Land Rover, Lexus, Mercedes-Benz and BMW in the mix. For electric luxury look to Tesla, Lucid, Genesis, Maserati and Audi, among others. Several of these companies make both. Follow below for reasons your next luxury car should be eco-friendly. NO EMISSIONS There are lower emissions from hybrid and zero emissions for electric vehicles. Electric cars have a longer lifespan and require less maintenance (no need to change oil or filters). VEHICLE REGISTRATION In Arizona, you’ll enjoy lower registration fees when you go all-electric. RANGE ANXIETY In a 2018 AAA survey, 58% of consumers said they wouldn’t go electric because they feared running out of charge. As battery technology improves, electric vehicles can drive between 205 to 350 miles on a charge — some even farther. PUBLIC CHARGING NETWORK EXPANDS The network of charging stations continues to expand throughout Arizona. While most electric vehicle drivers use a Level 1 or Level 2 charger at home, there is always the option to charge publicly. Some public chargers are free, and you can find them through PlugShare or the Alternative Fuels Data Center.

F E AT U R E

MORE EMPLOYERS INSTALL CHARGERS As more drivers invest in electric vehicles, more companies accommodate them. To date, more than 230 electric vehicle chargers have been installed at Valley businesses thanks in part to SRP’s Business EV Charger Rebate Program. HOV ACCESS With a fully battery-powered EV you can join Arizona’s energy-efficient plate program to get full access to the carpool lane at any time. Yes, anytime. NEVER VISIT EMISSIONS If your electric vehicle is fully batterypowered, skip emissions. Done deal. SKIP GAS STATIONS With a fully electric vehicle, there’s no need for a gas station — unless, you need a Slim Jim or bottle of water. EVS ARE HEALTHIER Gas vehicles burn gasoline and diesel carbon monoxide, benzene, formaldehyde and diesel particulate matter. By switching to an electric vehicle, you’re doing your part to improve public health. NOISE POLLUTION Ever notice how quiet EVs are? Feel calm and cool while cruising in your electric vehicle and not contributing to the problem. DRIVE SAFELY EVs undergo the same safety testing and safety standards required for conventional vehicles along with EVspecific safety standards. And electric vehicles tend to have a lower center of gravity so you’re less likely to roll over. TORQUE AND PERFORMANCE Only EV drivers know the joy of rapid, responsive acceleration. Try it — you’ll be convinced. VOL. 4, NO. 2 Northern A Z Luxur y L iving

Discover Europe

T

THROUGH ROAD TRIPS

here’s nothing quite as freeing as hopping in your car and embarking on an adventure. If this sounds like a good time to you, grab your international driver’s permit and pack your bags. Europe offers a variety of exceptional drives that will have you winding on mountainside routes and on to scenic sea-hugging roads. The possibilities are endless but here are just a few ideas to get you started. NORTH COAST 500, SCOTLAND Get to Scotland and begin your journey via the North Coast 500, a 516-mile route beginning and ending at Inverness Castle. The route, launched in 2015, brings you around the north coast of the country and features breathtaking vistas including Applecross Peninsula, Ullapool, Durness and of course, Inverness. ROME TO NAPLES VIA AMALFI COAST, ITALY Begin in Rome and head to Naples via the coast; you’ll experience remarkable views while getting an in-depth look at two of the country’s most important cities. After at least a couple of nights in the Eternal City, drive to Salerno, an ancient port city just southeast of Naples.

24

Northern A Z Luxur y L iving VOL. 4, NO. 2

Amalfi Coast, Italy Divide your time and stay in towns like Positano, Sorrento and Amalfi for at least two days each. Walk around the frozen-in-time ruins, then head to Naples for some pizza. LISBON TO PORTO, PORTUGAL Visiting Portugal can be frustrating just choosing what city to visit. Instead, hop in the car and head to both Porto and the capital of Lisbon in one trip.

Start in the culture-filled capital and wind your way around the coast with the Atlantic Ocean to the west. You may want to take a day to stop in Aveiro, Portugal’s answer to Venice, with a network of canals and streets lined with colorful buildings. Finally, arrive in Porto, Portugal’s second largest city, where you can relax by the river or cross over its bridges for a panoramic view of the city.

Get regular washings and detailing, and while cleaning use only quality products made for luxury cars.

PROTECTION And while we’re talking about paint and materials, over-exposure to sun and rain can cause damage to your car’s paint and interior. Park in a safe spot protected from the elements, preferably a climate-controlled garage. If you have to park outside, try to use a car cover for added protection. DRIVE SAFELY You’re driving one of your most prized possessions, so pay attention. Even if you find open roads and less traffic, don’t get carried away with the power.

Safeguard your dream car and drive responsibly. Goes without saying — no drinking and driving.

CLUTCH MAINTENANCE The clutch is one of the top five components in a car, and for a luxury car to move smoothly, the clutch must be in excellent condition. Watch your shifting and only let an expert mechanic near the clutch. GAS UP Luxury cars need topquality fuel, so only use high-quality fuel to keep your vehicle efficient. GET OUT Don’t let it sit too long and all alone. Drive that beauty regularly — long periods of inactivity can be harmful to a luxury car. And you didn’t buy it to hide it in the garage, so get out and show it off.

Barrett-Jackson HOLDS RECORD-BREAKING

$207.6M AUCTION

B

submitted by Barrett-Jackson

arrett-Jackson, The World’s Greatest Collector Car Auctions, supercharged its kickoff to the 2024 auction calendar with their flagship Scottsdale Auction, Jan. 20-28 at WestWorld of Scottsdale. The event featured its largest auction docket in company history with 2,016 collectible vehicles, all selling with No Reserve, for $200.9 million in auction sales. Additionally, Barrett-Jackson sold 1,180 pieces of authentic automobilia for $6.7 million, bringing total auction sales to $207.6 million, the most for a single auction in Barrett-Jackson history, with a 100% sell-through rate and over 190 world-record auction sales. Top auction sales included a 1956 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing for $3.41 million and a 2018 Bugatti Chiron for $2.97 million. “It was a tremendous event this week in Scottsdale with our largest docket in history, a record number of bidders, and an impromptu live performance by Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Sammy Hagar,” said Craig Jackson, chairman and CEO of Barrett-Jackson. “We continue to set the bar within the hobby with record-breaking sales like the 1956 300SL Gullwing, and our top sales reflect both the quality and diversity of our docket with a superb mix of classic sports cars, supercars, pre-war classics and Resto-Mods.”

The automotive lifestyle event kicked off with its inaugural Rock the Block concert presented by Arizona Lottery featuring live performances from rock bands Foreigner and Night Ranger. Highlights included: Barrett-Jackson’s QuikTrip Family Day, designed to bring in the next generation of enthusiasts with STEM Fest presented by Honeywell; the introduction of the Barrett-Jackson Cup presented by Castrol; a Pinewood Derby with Boy Scouts from the Grand Canyon Council; and the second iteration of the Future Collector Car Show presented by Meguiar’s at WestWorld of Scottsdale. The first weekend concluded with the Opening Night Gala, an automotive lifestyle event, featured dozens of law enforcement officers from the Scottsdale Police Department being honored and the presenting of colors, as well as acclaimed live entertainment from Emerald City Band and DJ Munition, gourmet food and signature cocktails. Four charity vehicles raised $1 million benefiting the Chip Miller Charitable Foundation for Amyloidosis Research, the Northeast Texas Community College Foundation, Building Homes for Heroes and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. “You won’t find an equal celebration of passion for the automotive culture, which is why we’re also hosting the Scottsdale Fall Auction this October,” Jackson said. f f O s y a P e c n e i t Pa WHEN CREATING A

BESPOKE FRAGRANCE

C

by Blake Herzog

reating your own bespoke fragrance is an ideal way to solidify your identity and cement your place in the memories of the people you meet. The process of designing a signature scent, whether it’s a DIY project or you work with a consultant at a perfumery, is typically a long process of deep research into dozens or even hundreds of aromas from which to choose top, middle and base notes. It requires a combination of artistry, knowledge of fragrances and a keen sense of smell, which still can’t be translated into online research. It’s far from cheap, too. This investment of your time and money will reward you with the ultimate luxury — an exclusive fragrance customized to your body and personality. Here’s an action plan for creating your own fragrance formula. QUESTION EVERYTHING If you’re working with a consultant the first thing you’ll probably get is a questionnaire that drills down into your scent preferences and the memories that helped form them, ingredients you’re drawn to, preferences in areas as varied as music and literature and the ultimate image you want to project.

34

Northern A Z Luxur y L iving VOL. 4, NO. 2

Do the same kind of soul-searching if you’re doing this on your own. YOUR NOSE WILL KNOW The answers you give to the above questions can guide you as you sniff yourself through the endless possibilities of scents, their combinations and how they respond to skin and body chemistry. Work with your consultant to explore fragrance families and established fragrances to find what rings true to you. If you’re on the DIY path, go to shops and department stores to sample as many fragrances as you can whether they’re individual essential oils (in carrier oils) or complete fragrances. You may need to fill in the gaps by ordering other samples online. DON’T RUSH IT Once you start trying different combinations, don’t rush to judgement no matter how much you love what you’re smelling. Give yourself time to observe and absorb how it interacts with different environments and what kind of compliments you get. It can take two or more years to settle upon a final product. You’ll have a fragrance as individualized to you as your fingerprints. It’s worth the effort.

Minimalist Details

T

YOU WON’T WANT TO MISS

he minimalist ethos as it applies to home décor is familiar to nearly anyone with even a vague understanding of interior design. Think clean, uncomplicated lines, sparsely adorned walls and surfaces, an absence of clutter, neutral colors, textured fabrics and an overall ambiance of calm. Knowing the big picture is the best start to introducing minimalism into our homes. But to perfect it, you’ll need to address a lot of subtleties that could end up working against you. A dusty, overloaded bookcase full of tomes you love but never crack open is not going to do you any favors. Take these elements into account as you declutter and simplify your home’s look. CLEAR THE BOOKSHELF This is likely going to be one of the spots most in need of decluttering, especially if you’re a book lover. It’s easy for other things to wind up there too, a “temporary” solution that becomes permanent over time. Relocating or discarding the loose change, cereal boxes and other random belongings that wind up on its shelves should be the easy part. Letting go of books you treasure will be considerably harder. It’s time, though, to be honest with yourself about how many of them you’ll never read again and donate those to a library, nonprofit or friend who might have a use for them. The room will be much lighter and cleaner as a result.

36

Northern A Z Luxur y L iving VOL. 4, NO. 2

LET YOUR ARCHITECTURE DO THE TALKING Some of the architectural details that set your home apart may be hidden or de-emphasized by your current décor. Large, artful windows that can flood a room with natural light may be concealed behind curtains or shutters, and quality wooden floors can fade from view under too many area rugs or bulky furnishings. Think about the detailing in your home that isn’t getting the proper display. Even if you’re dealing with molding or millwork that doesn’t seem especially compatible with minimalist design, it will add a touch of luxury without infringing on your open living space. NOT ALL NEUTRALS ARE PALE When we talk about a neutral palette it’s common to picture a lot of whites and ivories, beiges and taupes, grays, greiges and maybe some pale pastels. While these create a soothing atmosphere, the dark end of the spectrum adds grounding and drama. Black, charcoal gray, chocolate brown and navy are usually included on this list. They can bring the power of the earth, mountains, night sky and other depths of the natural world to complete the world we truly desire in our indoor space. They supply contrast and interest without competing or clashing with other neutrals.

LIFEST YLE SNAKEBITE Made up of just two key ingredients: Canadian Whiskey and a dash of lime juice. Throw these in a shot glass and drink it straight up. Order a Snakebite and you’ll get nods of approval from the regulars for that eye-watering bitter taste. BLOODY MARIA Take your Bloody Mary to new heights by subbing Tequila for the Vodka. And don’t forget to spice it up and add a bit of garnish like pickled green beans and/or bacon, but don’t go overboard. This is about the drink, not all that fancy decoration. OLD FASHIONED This comeback cocktail has been around since the 1800s and still remains sexy. A simple mix of bourbon, bitters and simple syrup over ice. Garnish with an orange slice and cherry, and don’t forget to use a large ice cube for added class and taste. TOM COLLINS This is a perfect example of what a guy’s cocktail should taste like — gin, lemon juice, club soda and a hint of sugar on the rocks. You can’t go wrong with a drink that has the ability to be smooth and tough at the same time.

RUSTY NAIL In an old-fashioned glass with ice, add 2 oz. of Scotch, ¾ to 1 oz. of Drambuie and an orange peel. One of the best cocktails for men, drinking a Rusty Nail calls for respect simply because too many of these and you’ll feel like a rusty nail in the morning. Go easy. BOULEVARDIER American-born writer Erskine Gwynne is credited with creating this cocktail in the 1930s in Paris and naming it after the title of his magazine. Add 1 part Campari, 1

part Sweet red vermouth, 1 to 1 1/2 parts rye whisky or bourbon. Stir and pour over ice or straight up and garnish with orange peel. MARTINI Whether you like it dirty or not, a martini turns you into a charming guy with a touch of class at the bar, like James Bond. A classic martini combines gin and vermouth although some prefer vodka and vermouth. But either way, make it dirty with a touch of olive juice and a couple of olives. Be careful, these sneak up on you before you know it.

THREAD COUNT

B

DOESN’T HAVE TO BE HIGHEST TO BE SOFTEST

uying new sheets can be overwhelming. It’s natural to assume a high thread count means better quality, but not always. There are several elements to consider when choosing sheets. Thread count does matter because a low thread count means sheets either are woven loosely or too thick, making them feel rough. Sheets with higher thread counts feel softer, but only up to a point. Thread count measures the fineness of a fabric, usually bedsheets and towels. It includes the total horizontal threads and vertical threads within a square inch of fabric. If it’s multi-ply (two or more layers), the threads in each layer count. For instance, a single-ply sheet may have 300 thread count. If that same sheet was made from two-ply yarn, the

42

Northern A Z Luxur y L iving VOL. 4, NO. 2

thread count is doubled to 600. Also, thread count measurement is only useful for single-ply cotton fibers. Noncotton fiber, like polyester, is so thin it can produce thread counts in the thousands without feeling as soft as a lower cotton thread count. In fact, some linen manufacturers use multi-ply thread to inflate thread count. So a higher thread count can still mean a low-quality fabric. For example, a 1,000 threadcount sheet can actually be a two-ply 500 thread-count. The best sheets usually have a thread count between 200 and 400. Lower than 180 tends to have a rougher texture and over 400 is most likely inflated with multi-ply thread. The highest-quality, softest sheets use cotton with extralong fibers (called long-staple

fibers) that can be spun into fine, strong yarns. These include Egyptian, Pima and Supima. Bamboo is a good cotton sheet alternative that’s pestresistant, strong and versatile. Linen is lightweight with a matte finish and is durable, antimicrobial and moisture-wicking. But linen gets softer with time, so don’t expect it right away. Microfiber, extremely fine fibers of polyester, are soft and resist pilling, but polyester is less breathable and not great for sensitive skin. Cotton jersey sheets are T-shirt fabric, so if you like sleeping in an old T-shirt it might be just the ticket. But neither microfiber nor jersey have the cool crispness of woven cotton, so if you flip your pillow to the cool side, you’re better off with cotton.

CREATE A WARDROBE OF

W

Q ‘ uiet Luxury’

by Michelle Beck, Owner, Purple Clover Boutique

hat is “quiet luxury,” and how do you obtain it in your wardrobe? A recent talking point in the fashion industry and lifestyle publications has been the topic of quiet luxury and how to achieve it. The look of quiet luxury is timeless and minimalistic. Here are tips on achieving this look: 1. Most importantly, have properly fitted clothing for your body type. Jeans are a great example of this. Right now there are endless fits. The flare jean, the skinny jean, the boyfriend, the wide leg; the list can go on and on. The key is to find the size and the style that works for your body type. It can be tempting to go with the latest trend, but once you find the style that works for you, stay with it, and consider purchasing multiple pairs. You always want

44

Northern A Z Luxur y L iving VOL. 4, NO. 2

to have the style that you love. 2. Choose neutral colors. Even if bright colors are currently in style, quiet luxury items are always in neutral colors. Choose black, navy or beige. Fabric is also important. Cashmere is the ultimate luxury fabric and is available in many different

weights. Long associated with cooler temperatures, lightweight cashmere is now available and is perfect in a summer wrap or sweater. 3. Always carry the perfect handbag. It can be any size, but a classic structured one is preferred. Brown or black leather without a flashy logo is always the right choice. Understated is the key here to this look. Nothing blingy is allowed with this style. 4. Different metals may come in and out of style, but you simply can’t go wrong with gold accessories. A pair of gold hoop earrings, a gold chain link necklace and a few gold stacked bracelets will elevate any look. What is the best part of the quiet luxury look? You will have truly timeless pieces. Instead of following trends you will have a look all your own. Evaluate your wardrobe and check with your favorite boutique or department store to help you find what you need. Quiet luxury pieces are always available.

hen located in the right market and maintained efficiently and well, vacation rental (a.k.a. short-term rental) properties can be a fabulous investment. They can serve as your own vacation destination, produce a steady stream of income when you’re not using it and appreciate in value the whole time. Yet reports of oversaturated markets and tough regulations that have all but eliminated them as an option in cities as large as New York have some experts flashing a yellow light on these vacation rentals for investors. More than ever, location dictates where those looking to build can up their income. These are some of the communities analysts have recently recommended.

VIRGINIA Vacasa, a vacation rental management company, put two Virginia towns, Lake Anna and Sandbridge, in the No. 1 and 3 slots for its annual “Top 25 Places to Buy a Vacation Home” listing in 2023, with nearby Rehoboth Beach, Delaware at No. 4. These mid-Atlantic destinations all offer ocean or lakeside water access that are big draws in the spring and summer and brilliant fall foliage that can lead to a steady stream of bookings toward year’s end. Lake Anna sits on a quiet lake, Virginia’s third-largest, where much of the shoreline is restricted to homeowners and their guests. Sandbridge offers a peaceful retreat near bustling Virginia Beach, and Rehoboth is famed for its mile-long boardwalk.

PHOENIX Some analysts report Arizona’s big metro area is one of the better places you could buy a vacation rental property despite high startup costs — depending again on the specific location. Lower operating costs and higher expected revenue boosts the attractiveness of most neighborhoods in Phoenix and Mesa for these investments, according to LawnStarter, which produces studies ranking cities on numerous parameters. Tempe, as a college town with a lot of out-of-town families visiting students, is also singled out as a good bet. Scottsdale gets a much lower ranking, with increased competition a possible factor. Phoenix also finishes at or near the top of many surveys rating the best place to invest in residential rental properties.

FINGER LAKES, UPSTATE NEW YORK The towns surrounding this cluster of 11 skinny lakes between Syracuse and Buffalo topped a list released by Evolve, a company with more than 30,000 short-term rental properties in 750 markets, of the “Best Places to Buy a Vacation Rental in 2024.” Wineries, breweries, summer and winter sports and recreation and events and festivals make this scenic slice of the Empire State a prime investment opportunity. Canandaigua Lake is surrounded mostly by high-end homes, requiring a hefty upfront investment, but if you can surmount that barrier it’s a great place to invest. Seneca Falls on Seneca Lake is beautiful in summer and busy in winter as home of the It’s a Wonderful Life Museum.

Keep Outfits Sharp

T

While you Travel

ravel takes us places where we want to look and dress our best, regardless of whether we’re going for work or pleasure. Here’s how to accomplish that feat.

ROLL INSTEAD OF FOLD Rolling clothes can help reduce wrinkles and save space. This method is particularly effective for casual and wrinkle-resistant fabrics. USE PACKING CUBES These help organize your clothes and keep them compact. They also make it easier to find specific items without having to unpack. CHOOSE WRINKLERESISTANT FABRICS Opt for fabrics that are less prone to wrinkling, such as synthetic blends, knits and performance fabrics. These materials tend to bounce back after being packed. PACK A PORTABLE STEAMER A small, portable steamer can be a handy tool to quickly remove wrinkles. BRING STAIN REMOVER OR LAUNDRY DETERGENT A travel-sized stain remover pen or wipes can be useful for dealing with stains on the go. A travel-sized container of laundry detergent also can be useful for spot-cleaning stains and washing small items in the sink.

48

Northern A Z Luxur y L iving VOL. 4, NO. 2

USE DRYER SHEETS Placing dryer sheets between layers of clothing can help keep your clothes smelling fresh and reduce static. It can deter pests in some cases. LIMIT THE COLOR PALETTE Packing clothes in a coordinated color palette can make it easier to mix and match outfits, reducing the number of items you need to bring and minimizing the risk of clashing colors.

AVOID OVERPACKING This can lead to more wrinkles. Stick to essentials and versatile pieces. SEPARATE DIRTY AND CLEAN CLOTHES Use a laundry bag or a separate compartment in your luggage to keep dirty clothes away from clean ones. This helps prevent odors and keeps your clean clothes fresh. PACK A TRAVEL SEWING KIT Fixing a loose button or a small tear can prevent further damage.

hen I invited my grown son to celebrate a mommy and me milestone birthday cruise in Northern Europe this spring, I asked myself if I could be a traveling partner and not a mom. The answer was “yes,” except for the one time in Culzean Castle, Scotland when I wanted to shout, “Hands in pockets, hands in pockets!” That child has to touch everything. When we returned I asked him to share his memories of the trip. This is our story Christopher: May is a perfect time to visit the UK and Ireland. The skies are blue, the sunsets magnificent and the shades of green highlight the sturdy Hawthorne bushes bursting in soft white blooms. If the natural beauty, the bobbing fishing boats and the rocky harbors weren’t enough to make you fall in love with the area, the locals were the main attraction. Friendly, helpful and relaxed with a yarn to spin about every mile we traveled. Tori: The aforementioned Culzean Castle was just one of many castles we visited on our itinerary that included Guernsey, Ireland, Northern Ireland, Scotland and France. While a tour of Stonehenge was essential, my favorite moments were the little surprises we didn’t plan. The antique book store casually supervised by two elderly men in rocking chairs. They seemed to exist on book dust and tea. Their shop was a treasure trove of Queen Elizabeth commemorative thimbles, literature from the Nazi occupation of the island during WWII and ancient nautical handbooks. And, while we couldn’t not see Edinburgh Castle, the sprawling fortress that dominates the town, the port city of Queensferry and the morning we spent exploring and locating a forested hiking trail that parallels the harbor, was mysterious and energizing. Christopher: Many of our excursions were pre-planned and shared. However, as a Navy veteran my most profound tour was a solo trip to the beaches of Normandy.

LIFEST YLE

On Arromanches Beach, where the Canadians came ashore during the D-Day invasion, I broke from the group and considered how I would approach such a long, flat, desolate beach. Compared to this Gold’s Beach landing area however, our next destination, Omaha Beach, overwhelmed me with sorrow. I witnessed countless white crosses at the battlefield grave complex that represented just a small number of the many sons and daughters that were lost during the war. The silence was respectful providing this shore with a blanket of peace for the souls lost there. Tori: An unexpected treat, about mid-way through our cruise was a trip to Alloway, the childhood home of Robert Burns, Scotland’s famous poet who many of us know from the song, Auld Lang Syne. We stopped at the Brig a’ Doon’s Coven Restaurant where the door was staffed by a gentleman in full Highland Dress, bagpipes rattling. Soon the entry was flooded by men in kilts and ladies in fascinators who were assembling for a wedding reception. Christopher: As a novice pleasure cruiser, I was fascinated by the technology on board this Princess ship. It took me a while, though, when I got home to remember the little medallion I wore on my wrist to summon a waiter wouldn’t work with my spouse. Tori: I was feeling a bit sad as I packed on our final day, but cheered myself that in only two weeks I would be packing again for a Greek vacation with Christopher’s daughter, my oldest granddaughter. Christopher and Tori: When people asked what the best part of the cruise was it was spending time with each other, great conversations and new memories.

LOOK TO THE STREETS TO

FASHION YOUR

WARDROBE

ashion meccas like Paris, Milan and New York explode with designers’ creativity and trendsetting power during the Fashion Weeks intended to plot out what the rest of us will be wearing months in advance. But “street style,” or eye-catching ensembles worn by the people attending those events as well as in fashionable neighborhoods any day of the year, gets almost as much coverage. Whether worn by celebs or lesserknown fashionistas, these outfits showcase individual style and tend to be more accessible and practical than what’s seen on the runways. Photographers and other observers are able to distill new trends from street style. Here are a few worth incorporating into your wardrobe: ACCESSORIZE BIG Don’t shy away from statement jewelry, smartly designed hats, conversationpiece boots, wide headbands and ample purses. From New York’s Upper East Side to Beverly Hills ladies are living large. MONOCHROME MAGIC Opt for monochromatic outfits for a sleek and polished aesthetic. Whether it’s an allblack ensemble, a head-to-toe neutral look or features one print dominated by the color being showcased, monochrome outfits are effortlessly stylish and easy to put together. GIRLY TWEED JACKETS Preppy is a vibe showing up on many trend lists for 2024, and this is manifesting in the cropped tweed blazers turning up on the sidewalks outside many fashion shows. Chic whether they’re solid or patterned, they can go with nearly anything in your closet.

52

Northern A Z Luxur y L iving VOL. 4, NO. 2

FAUX FUR = FAB STYLE The clock is kind of ticking for big full coats as winter melts into spring, but smaller fur jackets and wraps are showing up almost everywhere you look, and they still work great for cool nights. Fuzzy Russian- and bucket-style hats are having their moment, and a lot of furry trim on everything from bags to sandals should show up in the near future. HERE, KITTY, KITTY If stilettos don’t agree with your feet or sensibility anymore — but you’re not ready to go full-on flats — the answer is stalking you on sidewalks and in stores wherever you go. Kitten heels both classic and mod give you that confident click without forcing your feet into a Barbie-style tiptoe. MIXING HIGH AND LOW The fashion-forward have perfected mixing high-end and affordable pieces to create a balanced and eclectic look. Pairing designer jeans with an unbranded sweater, or the other way around, creates a fashionforward ensemble that reflects your style. YES TO SLOUCH Slouchy jeans and pants are still being worn by tons of models and influencers who clearly don’t have anything they need to hide. Rhianna, Hailey Bieber and street stylers galore gravitated to wide-leg and generously cut jeans of all colors and stripes, as well as corduroy trousers. Usually, these were topped by form-fitting sweaters or blouses and a longline coat.

TAKE THE RISK OUT OF

Wine & Cheese

I

Pairings

f you’re planning on serving a cheese board at your next gathering, choosing wine to pair with it can be tricky. To begin with, keep in mind a few rules. For instance, contrasting flavors, when paired correctly, can play off one another and combine beautifully. Fresh, creamy cheeses pair well with tangy wines like sauvignon blanc and the sweetness of a moscato works perfectly with a salty cheese like Italian Parmesan. But even if contrasting flavors pair well, sometimes it works to match the intensity. For instance, light, cool wines pair well with lighter, fresher cheeses. And as the saying goes, “What grows together, goes together.” Soil and climate affect the flavors of wine, and the same can be said about cheese. It never hurts to match this way. When pairing, taste the wine before the cheese for best results. And just like some wines, remember that some cheeses taste better at room temperature rather than cold. Here are a few wine pairings to get you started:

SAUVIGNON BLANC With its grassy and mineral feel, sauvignon blanc pairs well with feta, Asiago and brie. ROSÉ Rosé is perfect all year and accompanies fresh cheeses like creamy burrata, chevre and havarti. Darker rosés like aged cheddar or Gouda. PINOT NOIR Pinot noir can be simple as well as fruity. It stands up well with the earthiness of Camembert, brie or strong cheeses like taleggio. A light and fruity pinot noir works well with cambozola. MERLOT Merlot goes well with just about everything including cheddar, havarti and a nutty Swiss. CHIANTI Think local when pairing with Chianti. It’s a love match with tangy cheeses like pecorino, provolone and Parmesan.

CHAMPAGNE OR SPARKLING WINE For a brut Champagne, pair with the creaminess of brie and aged cheeses from France and Switzerland, like Comte and Gruyere. At the same time, prosecco contrasts well with Parmesan.

ZINFANDEL Red zinfandel has lots of cherry and plum flavors with a hint of black pepper. Hard cheeses like aged cheddar and manchego stand up to its bold nature, or try Gruyere and even gorgonzola.

CHARDONNAY Crisp, unoaked chardonnay matches well with the sweet, tangy flavors of fresh goat cheese. On the other hand, a bold oaky chardonnay suits a semihard cheese, like cheddar or havarti.

PORT A gorgeous ruby port alongside a wedge of pungent Stilton or gorgonzola is a classic pair. For a drier, young white port, try Gruyere or Appenzeller.

WELLNESS

YOUR BODY TO

MOISTURIZE IT

L

iving in the desert means dry skin, there’s no way around it. And despite your best efforts at keeping up with it, there never seems to be a remedy. A new K-beauty trend, body slugging, may be the answer to hydrated glowing skin. Slugging is simply covering your face with petroleum jelly after moisturizing

in your night-time routine. Hence the name “slugging” since you are now a slimy slug. Body slugging refers to taking this further and covering your entire body before bed with an occlusive such as Vaseline and Aquafor that create a physical barrier on top of the skin to keep skin moist and hydrated.

VOL. 4, NO. 2 Northern A Z Luxur y L iving

61

WELLNESS

Before it was called slugging, dermatologists were advising patients with dry skin and eczema to use petroleum jelly, especially over their bodies. By creating a seal, water loss is minimal and the skin’s lipid barrier has time to repair itself. The steps are simple. Before applying the occlusive, apply your normal moisturizer. It’s essential to cleanse the skin before applying any products, so take a quick shower and apply moisturizer as soon as you are done. Next, leave the moisturizer on for a few minutes to allow it to absorb into the skin. Now seal with the occlusive. Then wipe off gently, leaving a thin layer. Although some leave a heavy layer on overnight, some experts advise against this because it seals the skin for too long. Bear in mind that this will soak

62

Northern A Z Luxur y L iving VOL. 4, NO. 2

into your pajamas or bed linens, so you’ll need to clean your clothes and bedding afterward. Fortunately, suffering through stickiness isn't the only way to get the slugging effect. There is a spray-on version of a good occlusive, Aquaphor Ointment Body Spray. Even though it’s thinner and dispenses as a mist, it’s still an effective topcoat. Plus, it’s a bit easier to apply. Cetaphil Healing Ointment also is a bit thinner and easier to spread. If you want some extra moisture but don’t want to get all slugged up, look for products that contain ingredients like ceramides, glycerin or shea butter. Moisturizers with ingredients like lactic acid exfoliate the skin while also hydrating, especially if you tend to be on the drier side. Also, if you have acne-prone skin, slugging probably isn’t

for you because it can cause outbreaks. And slugging, body or face, isn’t an everyday ritual. You’ll block your pores and your skin won’t be able to breath. Once or twice a week should do it. Finally, don’t apply petroleum jelly after using retinol and AHA, especially if you have sensitive skin. Slugging can cause them to overabsorb and lead to skin irritation. It’s best to use hyaluronic acid serum or your favorite mild moisturizer before slugging, allowing it to do its magic while you sleep.

WHAT IS BODY CONTOURING?

W

HOW DOES IT WORK?

by Aymee Wilson, Owner & Founder, Wilson Aesthetics

hile many people are familiar with traditional methods like diet and exercise to achieve a desired physique, body contouring offers an alternative for those targeting specific areas of concern. This treatment addresses stubborn fat deposits that don’t seem to budge despite a healthy lifestyle.

WHAT IS BODY CONTOURING? This is a medical procedure designed to reshape and redefine specific body areas. Body contouring focuses on regions where fat accumulates, such as the arms, abdomen, thighs and buttocks. The non-invasive treatment doesn’t require surgical incisions, anesthesia or a lengthy recovery period. It uses heat and ultrasound cavitation to break down fat cells. These technologies generate energy that targets fat deposits, causing them to dissolve and be naturally eliminated by the body’s lymphatic system. Body contouring is suitable for all skin types and carries a lower risk of complications compared to surgical alternatives like liposuction. Moreover, clients often report noticeable results after just one session, although multiple treatments are usually recommended for optimal outcomes. HOW DOES BODY CONTOURING WORK? A device is used that emits ultrasound waves and heat energy that infiltrate the skin and reach the underlying fat cells. These waves cause the fat

64

Northern A Z Luxur y L iving VOL. 4, NO. 2

cells to vibrate and heat up, leading to their breakdown. The body’s natural lymphatic system then takes over, flushing out the liquefied fat cells and eliminating them through natural urination and sweating. EXPECTED RESULTS Many clients report noticeable changes even after just one session. The extent of these changes can vary, with some individuals seeing a reduction ranging from half an inch to 2 inches in the treated area. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle, including a balanced diet and regular exercise, is also crucial to sustain the results. ALTERNATIVE TREATMENTS Alternative treatments to body contouring often focus on aspects other than fat reduction, such as muscle toning.

EMPOWERRF TONE This non-invasive treatment focuses on muscle toning rather than fat reduction. It employs electrical muscle stimulation (EMS) technology to induce involuntary muscle contractions. 1. The treatment uses hands-free applicators on targeted muscle groups. These applicators emit electrical pulses that stimulate muscle contractions, effectively exercising the muscles. 2. The number of sessions needed can vary, typically between three to six sessions. 3. This treatment is suitable for individuals looking to tone up specific muscle groups or enhance the results of their regular exercise regimen.

Stretch Out ON HOT SAND TO

Relax & Reboot

P

sammotherapy, or hot sand therapy, is a practice rooted in the deserts of the Middle East and the Mediterranean coast, practiced in ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome. Those who received it usually were either covered up to their neck in warm sand or massaged on top of a bed of heated sand. Continued in many parts of the world, this therapy has been adapted as a treatment used in some of the world’s most luxurious spas. Clients are invited to lie on a customized table filled with quartz sand often mixed with such minerals as amber or Himalayan salt, which are thought to have healing properties. The table has a continuous heating system and can be tilted upward or downward for different therapeutic effects. The body is cocooned by the sand, supported by the granules as they filter into its curves and crevices to promote relaxation. White handheld bags, or poultices, filled with more heated sand often are used by the masseuse for added pressure and release. Depending on the spa, the experience can be heightened by add-ons including aromatherapy, music and ambiance lights. Tibetan singing bowls might be rung and placed on different sections of the body so vibrations can reverberate throughout.

A WEALTH OF WELLNESS The combination of the sand and massage therapist leaves most people feeling soothed yet rejuvenated. Hot sand therapy can alleviate pain and discomfort from several conditions. • Joint pain relief — The heat from the sand is believed to have a soothing effect on joints, potentially benefiting conditions like arthritis. • Detoxification — Sweating induced by the heated sand is thought to promote the elimination of toxins through the skin. • Improved circulation — The heat from the sand may enhance blood circulation, potentially leading to improved oxygenation of tissues. • Skin health — Sand therapy, especially when involving exfoliation, may contribute to improved skin health by removing dead skin cells and promoting a healthy complexion. • Reduced back pain — Slight inversion of the table to raise the legs upward creates a stretch that can improve low back pain by rehydrating discs and realigning the spine. • Improved sleep — Reduced stress and muscle tension can contribute to a more restful sleep. TAKING A COLD PLUNGE

A

MAY HEAL WHAT AILS YOU

refreshing dip in the pool sounds so relaxing but make that a freezing pool and the word refreshing doesn’t fit anymore — more like shocking. But that’s not stopping millions of people all over the world. Cold plunge started as a postgame recovery ritual for athletes. They commonly use cold therapy to help muscle recovery since research supports improvements in muscle power, reduced serum creatine kinase, muscle soreness and perceived recovery through cold plunges. But it’s now become mainstream thanks to celebrities and athletes sharing their cold-plunge experience including David Beckham, Madonna, Lizzo and Lady Gaga. A cold plunge is exactly what it sounds like.

68

Northern A Z Luxur y L iving VOL. 4, NO. 2

You submerge into very cold water. This can be done in a bathtub, open body of water or pool. To get the best benefits, you need to fully submerge yourself in water at 59 degrees or less, usually as low as 39 degrees. Once you’re in, begin with the Wim Hof breathing technique. Find a comfortable position and take between 30 to 40 quick, deep breaths. Breathe in deeply through the nose or mouth and through the belly to the chest. Exhale through the mouth, then immediately breathe in again. Take one final, deep inhalation then let the air out and stop inhaling. Hold the breath until you feel the urge to breathe again. Then inhale deeply and hold for 15 seconds. Repeat the process three to four times.

The benefits of cold plunge, depending on who you talk to, are numerous. Some studies have shown it reduces inflammation, chronic pain and redness while improving circulation and performance. Additional benefits reported include improvements in mood, sleep, stress, mental health and immune function. If you’re interested in a cold plunge, you can find locations in northern Arizona, or buy one for home use. Costs range from $5,000 and up, keeping water at a continuous cold temperature and filtered. If you’re new to cold plunging, be sure to start slow. You can start with a slightly warmer temperature and work your way down. Don’t go from doing nothing to attempting a long cold plunge. Ease into it.

TRY ‘BABY BOTOX’

B

FOR A MORE NATURAL EFFECT

otox is a dominant force in the world of injectable substances to tackle or eliminate wrinkles and other signs of aging but is dogged by a widespread reputation for resulting in an unnatural, “frozen” effect. This has led some to seek “baby” or “micro” Botox, which uses smaller doses of the botulinum toxin. While cosmetic baby Botox sounds as if it offers the best of both worlds, as with anything there are pros and cons to using this. UPSIDES Subtle rejuvenation — It helps reduce fine lines and wrinkles without completely freezing facial expression. Best for people just beginning to see signs of aging and who haven’t used Botox before or people not looking for a dramatic change. Preventive anti-aging — By starting treatments earlier, this method may prevent the development of deeper wrinkles over time. Minimal downtime — Clients can often resume their regular activities shortly after the procedure. Natural facial expressions — Unlike some heavier doses of Botox, the smaller dose allows for more natural facial expressions. These smaller doses are used in exact versus general areas.

POTENTIAL DRAWBACKS Temporary results — The positive effects of baby Botox tend to last from two to four months, while the higher doses of regular Botox last three to six months. Consistent maintenance treatments are necessary to sustain the results for both. Potential side effects — While complications are quite rare, there is a risk of such side effects as bruising, swelling or asymmetry. Cost — With more frequent treatments, the investment may outpace that for ordinary Botox. Limited effect on deep wrinkles — Baby Botox may be less effective for individuals with deep-set wrinkles. Not suitable for everyone — Some people may not be suitable candidates, especially those who are pregnant or breastfeeding, have certain neurological disorders or allergies to cow’s milk protein, a Botox ingredient.

3D

Manicures

G

SEND YOUR STYLE TO THE STRATOSPHERE

etting a fantastic manicure is one of the best things we can do for ourselves, which is why so many of us do it. With so many people showing off their nails embellished by talented, creative nail technicians it can be hard for yours to stand out, which is why 3D manicures are getting more elaborate and sensational. It started out with press-on crystals, rhinestones and other charms and has expanded to tiny versions of just about any decoration you can think of — buckles, bows, stones, sea glass and flowers. Then there’s sculpted effects accomplished just with gel polish recreating the textures of seashells, marble, ridges, water droplets and swirls of frosting, for starters. Luxe designs can include delicate “cuffs” rimming along your cuticles, gold accents oozing down your nails, intricate gold or silver grids, gold butterflies atop a bed of slivery glitter, reflective chrome polish magnifying Swarovski crystals and even acrylic nails with spellbinding cutouts that will keep everyone staring. They can look cute, glamorous, ethereal, gothic, galactic, spooky, feral, regal, whatever impression you want to give.

72

Northern A Z Luxur y L iving VOL. 4, NO. 2

STACKING THE DECK The 3D components can be added via prepared press-ons to natural or acrylic nails or built directly on the nails, allowing more creativity and customization. When selecting a salon you should make sure it checks all the fundamental boxes in terms of cleanliness and good references, but also ask for examples of 3D manicures they have done so you can assess their competence and creativity. Your tech likely will show you photos for inspiration rather than color swatches as you discuss your favorite styles, colors and the direction you want your manicure to go. Go into as much detail as you can, or if you trust the artist you’re working with you can let them take the lead on creating a gorgeous, one-of-akind landscape across your fingertips. If you wear rings, consider whether the design could interfere with taking them off. You can expect these manicures to last two to three weeks, depending how you take care of it. Keep your hands moisturized, wear gloves when doing chores and use soap instead of hand sanitizer. And leave removal to the pros.

Heat those

EYELASHES FOR THE

I

Curl you Want

f you want fuller-looking lashes, there’s no shortage of ways to achieve it. You can use an eyelash serum, add extensions or tint them. Then there’s always the traditional combo of mascara and an eyelash curler. But if you want to try something new and get gorgeous, curled lashes, add a heated eyelash curler to the mix. Heated eyelash curlers don’t clamp your lashes, so they are less damaging. They’re also perfect for straight lashes that resist curling. Heated curling is longer lasting, like using a curling iron on your hair. Heads up though, heated lash curlers require a steady hand and patience. Poking your eye with a hot tool is about as fun as it sounds. To use, apply mascara and with curler already heated, rest it near the lash base and slowly pull upward along the lashes for about 10 seconds for a lovely upswept curl. Repeat as necessary. For an inexpensive heated lash curler, try the YAMYONE Electric Heated Eyelash Curler. It heats up quickly and will do the trick just fine, it’s just not very fancy at about $8.

The Envious Lashes Heated Eye Lash Curler is safe for extensions, separates lashes and can be used after mascara. Costs around $30. The Lash Star Heated Lash Curler is compact and rechargeable with USB charger rather than batteries, making it a great travel companion. It works on extensions and natural lashes, has four heat settings and a clear temp display. It can be used on brows — find it for around $39. Finally, if you’re new to heated lash curling, you might want to start slowly. The Grande Cosmetics heated Lash Curler is super easy and has two heat settings, neither of which get so hot that you'll accidentally burn yourself. Bonus — it has a grooved safety slot to protect the delicate skin around your eyes. Sells for about $39.

Chlorophyll WATER

Y

TAKES ON ACNE, BODY ODOR, SKIN DAMAGE AND MORE

ou might know chlorophyll as the compound that gives plants their beautiful green color. But when sourced from algae like spirulina or leafy greens, chlorophyll is a solid source of plant-based protein. As a supplement, you likely will see it called chlorophyllin, which is a water-soluble form of chlorophyll that contains copper and sodium. These extra minerals make it easier for your body to absorb. Chlorophyllin appears to be better absorbed than natural sources of chlorophyll, though it’s not clear yet if that’s an advantage or not. Some research shows chlorophyll skin products may fight acne, and there’s evidence it can help with weight loss. It also contains antioxidants, which protect your cells against free radicals that play a role in heart disease, cancer and other diseases. One study concluded that chlorophyllin could be of significant use in improving body odor, while another showed it can help with healing skin after sun damage.

76

Northern A Z Luxur y L iving VOL. 4, NO. 2

Yet another small study found chlorophyll reduced pancreatic cancer cells in experiments. In its early stages, researchers are now looking at chlorophyll as a contributor to the decreased incidence of cancer among individuals who consume green vegetables. Liquid chlorophyllin is often sold by the bottle. With some brands, you can take the liquid straight or mix it with water or juice. Chlorophyll supplements also come in powder, tablet or capsule form. Some research shows that prolonged use of supplements with high chlorophyll or chlorophyllin content can lead to a mild sensitivity to sunlight. Existing photosensitivity from other medications may also be exacerbated by chlorophyll and chlorophyllin supplementation, so talk to your physician before taking this.

DESIGN

YOUR INDOOR PLANTS THROUGH

Interiorscaping

Y

ou probably have a few houseplants for a natural look. But if you want to elevate your interior space, consider interiorscaping. Also called interior plantscaping, interiorscaping refers to designing and arranging plants and natural elements for a more visually appealing interior.

VOL. 4, NO. 2 Northern A Z Luxur y L iving

81

DESIGN

But this is much more than just buying a houseplant. Interiorscaping means deliberately choosing plants to integrate into a home’s design. This doesn’t just look good; it feels good. Piles of research have shown that plants boost your mood, reduce stress and improve sleep. And interior trees, shrubs and flowers have a calming effect. Interiorscaping is about how plants enhance your home — scaling the plants to the room’s dimensions is important. Like furniture, they need to fit and not just fill a hole; they should be integral to the design. If you’ve decided to do a little interiorscaping, there are a few things to keep in mind.

CHOOSE THE RIGHT PLANTS Examine the sun/shade requirements for each plant and place accordingly. For instance, south-facing windows are sunny; north-facing are shady. Look for skylights and shady spots. Correct lighting can lead to easier care and a longer life for your plant. Also, watch heat vents, they can quickly dry out and burn delicate foliage. CONSIDER YOUR LIFESTYLE Choose carefully. If you’re the type to forget to water plants, buy plants that don’t need as much water. And try to choose a few that can be on the same watering schedule, reducing your work.

If you prefer lots of sunlight in your home, choose plants that thrive in it. In other words, buy plants that like to live like you. CONSIDER COMPATIBILITY Choose plants that look nice together and create pairings that contrast but are complementary. For example, the big leaves of Monstera work well next to the spiky foliage of a snake plant. PLACEMENT IS KEY Triangulate plant placement, creating groups of three together or spaced apart. Place three plants together: tall, medium and short, or two on one side of the room and one on the other corner. And keep plants in odd numbers for visual interest. USE PLANTERS STRATEGICALLY Containers create dimension and balance. Play with colors and textures (ceramic, concrete, metal), and consider the style of your home and choose planters accordingly, like mid-century modern or farmhouse chic. You can also use plant stands to offer a boost in height. CONSIDER A DESIGNER Finally, if this is too complicated, call a professional. Design and placement of plants in a home or office is just what a designer is for. Make sure your designer understands your lifestyle and aesthetics. Then you enjoy the end result.

MarbleSlab ON CHOOSING A

I

f you are finally remodeling your kitchen, or designing your dream kitchen, the question of countertops should be one of the first topics. And when it comes to countertops, marble remains the top choice for many. If you’re in the market, here are a few tips. First, call in advance and make sure the facility has marble slabs in your color, type, square footage and dimensions. Ask them to pull out a few, and if you see something that catches your eye, ask to see it close up. Since every slab is different, select the exact pieces for your project. Decide where the veining goes so there are no surprises later. Also, consider how pieces are installed to avoid seams. If you have seams, bookmatch so adjacent pieces have

84

Northern A Z Luxur y L iving VOL. 4, NO. 2

a mirrored appearance. It’s possible to cut some marble blocks two different ways to achieve unique veining patterns like cross-cut or fleuri-cut, resulting in an open flowered pattern. Vein cut, or striato, slices the block to achieve a linear, striped appearance. There are many ways to finish stone, including brushing and polishing techniques. An orangepeel-like texture gives a leather, brushed or river-wash finish. Of course the most popular finishes are polished, which looks glossy or honed. Also, make sure you know the difference between cracks and fissures. Cracks are a sign of damage. A fissure is a natural occurrence and doesn’t change the plane of the marble surface. You should be able to slide your

nail across a fissure without it catching. They don’t change the integrity of the slab. Consider rounding the edges of your slab since hard stones like marble are brittle and 90-degree corners can chip. Finally, finish with a penetrating sealer for long-term performance. Acids like lemon will still etch the surface, but with a honed finish remove it with a Comet paste using a Scotch-Brite pad. If polished marble gets stained, remove it with an alkaline poultice. This will strip the sealer, so reapply after. That’s the beauty of marble — you can always sand it or polish it. With many other materials, once it’s damaged, that’s it. So trust your instincts, get advice and you’ll have just the right marble for years to come.

hen designing or remodeling a home it’s logical to spend the most thought on your living space. As for closets, cabinets, sheds, attics and other storage areas, it’s easy to go with the not-too-intrusive 10% of square footage estimate often quoted. Yet the number of us who devote our garages to boxes rather than vehicles or rent storage lockers indicates that isn’t always going to be enough. If you can keep your belongings in that 10% more power to you. Plan for some decluttering, but take an honest appraisal of everything you need to find a place for: INDIVIDUAL AND FAMILY STORAGE NEEDS Everyone in the household, including pets, have their own storage needs. Try jotting everything down along with a good estimate of the square footage they will take up: • Vehicles, including bicycles, RVs, boats, etc. • Food and drinks, including anything you want to stock up on • Wardrobe and accessories • Cleaning supplies • Jobs or schooling materials (especially if home-based) • Toys, gaming and hobby supplies • Collections (stamps, wine and anything in between) • Health and grooming supplies, including medications • Seasonal décor • Suitcases and other bulky travel items

DESIGN

• Outdoor furniture and yard supplies (including anything that needs to be kept inside for the winter) • Dirty and clean laundry baskets and bars to hang clothes on • Garbage and recycling containers (indoor and outdoor) WHERE TO PUT EVERYTHING? Once you write or type everything up and assign it a reasonably accurate number this part can get intimidating. This is where your creativity can save the day. Closets and garages will inevitably be part of your layout but consider how much vertical space can be easily incorporated, though this will depend on everybody’s height and ability to use ladders, pulleys or even motorized shelves and bars. Digging a basement isn’t always practical or feasible in Arizona but when it is it can be an excellent solution sized to your needs. Attics are another classic way to build in storage space, but in too many homes they are hard to access and not fully finished, with a floor that can’t bear the weight of much more than Christmas tree decorations and pests able to worm their way inside. If you’re going to have an attic, invest what is necessary to create a usable space. Sheds are extremely useful for lawnmowers and other gardening equipment, but don’t put too much else in them or they’ll cut into your outdoor square footage. Overall, incorporate niches and built-in shelves, window seats and benches with built-in compartments, slide-out drawers under a staircase, safes hidden in the wall or under the floor, foldaway shoe racks in the wall or closet, cubbies and closets in the mudroom and built-in tub surrounds to hold shampoos, soaps and similar supplies. BLINDS by Blake Herzog

hether blinds are your preferred window treatment or not, they are among the most effective ways to control the amount of light coming into your windows at any given moment. Whether you control them by hand, a remote control or smart sensors, they’re great at filtering the right amount of sunlight or moonlight into your room to keep family members and furniture protected. The choice between horizontal and vertical blinds depends on various factors such as the type of window, the room’s design and personal preferences. Here are general guidelines: WINDOW ORIENTATION • Horizontal blinds — Ideal for windows wider than they are tall. They work well for standard-sized windows and can be a good fit for bedrooms, living rooms and offices. • Vertical blinds — Suitable for tall windows taller than they are wide. These are often used for sliding glass doors or floor-to-ceiling windows. ROOM TYPE • Horizontal blinds — Commonly used in rooms where privacy and light control are essential, such as bedrooms and offices. • Vertical blinds — Suitable for areas with large windows or glass doors, like living rooms and on patio doors. They also are practical for rooms with high humidity, like kitchens and bathrooms. AESTHETIC CONSIDERATIONS • Horizontal blinds — Provide a classic and traditional look. They can make a room feel cozier and are available in various materials and colors.

• Vertical blinds — Offer a modern and sleek appearance. They often are chosen for contemporary interiors and can create the illusion of height in a room. RANGE OF COLORS AND DESIGNS • Horizontal blinds — Considerably more common than vertical blinds, it’s easy to find a set that will coordinate with your interior design choices. • Vertical blinds — It may take a little longer to find some that will pair well with your décor, but it’s doable in nearly all cases. EASE OF MAINTENANCE • Horizontal blinds — Need cleaning more often as dust more readily collects on the horizontal surface. • Vertical blinds — Typically easier to clean as dust doesn’t settle as much on individual slats. COST • Horizontal blinds — Can be more cost-effective in general. • Vertical blinds — Might be slightly more expensive, especially if custom sizes are required. ENERGY EFFICIENCY AND INSULATION • Horizontal blinds — Thinner, lighter-weight slats are less equipped to block out hot or cold weather and keep the interior comfortable. • Vertical blinds — The extra weight of these heavier blinds is more suited for keeping your home at a moderate temperature and saving on your energy bills.

INCORPORATE

GLOBAL HOME DESIGN TO REFLECT YOUR

ADVENTURES

I

by Valerie Demetros

f traveling is your passion, you probably pick up souvenirs along the way. Since interior design is now trending toward a global influence, why not include your travels into your own global design style? Global design is merely an interior decorating style inspired by cultures from around the world. It mixes patterns, textures and objects to reflect the places you love. It helps you remember places you have visited or even lived, and honors cultures you admire. This type of design is interpretive and dependent on each person’s experience, taste and style. There are no strict rules. Instead, it focuses on your own experiences and style. There are a few common elements found in global design. One is patterns. Whether it’s Asian florals, Maori designs or African batiks, don’t be afraid to mix. Not only can you build a personal style, but you will be combining different cultures in a beautiful fashion. Incorporate color — deep, vibrant hues can represent Middle Eastern or Asian aesthetics. Jewel tones or a palette of brown and tans can represent your travels to India or even an African safari.

And while choosing colors, play with textures. Rattan adds warmth and a tropical feel. Look for accents with a three-dimensional appeal like jute rugs, woven baskets or silk fabrics for a variety of textures. Antiques are perfect for adding style and a global influence. From mid-century modern to neoclassical styles, they can add pops of color and style or old-world charm. It’s also important to display treasures from your adventures. Replicas work as well as originals. Wooden masks, carvings, silk tapestries or sculptures can all be conversation pieces as well as reflecting your style. Choose throw pillows or textiles that bring culture to your home, not just color. Most importantly, this is your home. Let your global style tell a story. Focus less on textbook design and more on cultures that inspire you and represent your adventures.
