PINAL NOW Rewind

Steven Stoiber Photography by Steven Stoiber

Cool Rides of Pinal County: Steve’s GTO by John Stapleton

It was 1986, the year of Top Gun and Robert Palmer’s Addicted to Love. Steve Stoiber had just returned home to Wisconsin from an overseas tour, where he had been serving in the Army. Needing a car, Stoiber and a buddy spotted a 1970 Pontiac GTO for sale. “Once I saw this GTO, it had my attention. The body curves, the look of the front end, the wing on the back, it had more of a muscle car look to it than a Chevelle did. It looked good and ran good, so I bought it.” Stoiber drove it daily stateside, but it sat for long periods of time when he was overseas. Once retired, he and his wife Rosario moved to Maricopa. In 2008, he decided to bring the GTO back to life. “I welded in new floor and trunk pans. I did all the bodywork, primed and blocked to get ready for paint. I restored every component of that car. The engine, transmission, rear differentia, and even the steering column were all like new again.

14 Pinal NOW! July 2022

“Now, I didn’t restore it to original — I like power and I like a custom look. The Pontiac 400 engine was bored and stroked to a 461 cubic inch. It has modified Edelbrock heads, a competition cam and Holley 850 double pump carburetor. The engine was put on a dyno and puts out 500 horsepower.” “I just wanted a cool car to periodically cruise around in,” Stoiber says. “One day, around September 2013, shortly after getting the car completed, I noticed an advertisement for a car show in Ahwatukee. I was bored and had nothing better to do. So, I cruised over there and parked it. “At the end of the show when they announced the awards, I not only won first place for my class, but I also won the best of show award.” Since, he’s won 60 first place and best of show awards, including the Central Arizona Car and Bike Show held at Ak-Chin Circle Entertainment Center in March.

When he and Rosario ride together “I even open the car door for her — mainly because I don’t want her long fingernails to end up scratching the paint if she were to go for the door handle.” Stoiber has no plans to sell. He’d like to be buried with it.

Music Stirs Summer Evenings at the Windmill Winery by John Stapleton

The Windmill Winery is unlike any other place in Pinal County. On the outskirts of Florence, it is hailed as one of the best wedding venues in the state. The hideaway property transports you to a dream with two lakes, abundant greenery, a tasting room and two special venues — a 100 year-old barn and Hampton’s style lake house. The winery also is open to the public if you are looking for a special place to hang out with friends as the winery hosts live music in the evenings for the Saturday summer series. Acoustic guitarist Warren Young has been performing at the Windmill Winery for six years and is a regular for the summer series. “The crowds are nice, very laidback,” Young says. “Everyone can drink some wine and enjoy themselves, and for me it is way better than playing at restaurants.”

22 Pinal NOW! July 2022

Young says the evening weather, with the breeze from the lake and the shade from the trees, is usually cooperative at the winery and the music will be out in the courtyard. On especially hot days, it’s brought inside. Young, who is also a resident of Casa Grande, says he didn’t know about the winery prior to performing but he found it “amazing” the moment he arrived. “I walked in and thought ‘my gosh, is this Pinal County?’,” Young says. “It’s just so beautiful here.” Those interested in the summer series schedule can follow The Windmill Winery on Facebook. Headquarters, the Original Restaurant of Maricopa by John Stapleton

Before Maricopa was incorporated, Headquarters Restaurant and Bar was where the area’s leaders met and talked business, mostly agricultural. Their meetings included eating healthy portions of MexicanAmerican style dishes, breakfasts that could fill you up for the entire day and burros so big they could feed two people. When Hollywood legend John Wayne walked through the doors he was just a regular. “He just said ‘Hi’ to folks, and folks would just reply back with a ‘Hello,’ just like it still is for any of our customers,” owner Alma Farrell says. With eight decades of being in business, Farrell has seen the ups-and-downs of the familyowned restaurant, including fire, the passing of the original owner (her father-in-law), the residential explosion in Maricopa, the construction of the Maricopa

overpass in front of the restaurant, and of course, the pandemic that restricted many of the older patrons who frequented the restaurant. Headquarters had also been able to fend off competition with popular franchise operations that have come into Maricopa. The latest challenge is the supply issue affecting the pricing of food and service. Farrell says they have not emerged as successfully out of the pandemic as many would think, saying it is a “week-to-week discovery” with the changing cost of product and availability. Farrell says quality or ingredients are not being sacrificed. “We take pride in serving a good homemade breakfast, and 99.5% of product is prepared by our cooks, which is much better than serving frozen items,” she says. “I truly believe that is why we have been rated for our good breakfasts.”

Lunch and dinner items are a combination of traditional Mexican and American dishes, with many of the recipes coming from Farrell’s mother. “All of our items were items that my mother Dora Loeffelholz put on the menu,” Farrell says. “She was an outstanding cook and brought her specialties to Headquarters, and we have tried to keep them alive in her memory for the fantastic job she did when she ran it in the ‘70s.” As Maricopa changes, Headquarters remains the link to the past, not only in food and decor, but with the new generation of grandchildren doing the everyday work. She says she couldn’t do it without them or her staff, which has remained for decades through all the challenges. Headquarters Restaurant 19640 N. John Wayne Pkwy., Maricopa (520) 568-2167

Laugh It Up Thursdays at The Roost by John Stapleton

Thursdays at The Roost Sports Bar and Cafe is all about the laughs as The Roost Sports Bar and Café hosts comedy and improv night. “Since starting our comedy shows we have had great reception and have had a variety of different types of entertainers and acts,” Roost owner Ralph Skrzypczak says. “From stand-up comedians to magicians to jugglers and belly dancers, all the way to improv artists. Every Thursday we try to create a new and fun experience for both the comedians and entertainers, and for all our guests, too. “We focus on new talent and try to bring exciting acts to Maricopa that are free of charge to all of our patrons every Thursday night.” The comics are from the Tony Vicich’s Comedy School. Vicich has been a comic since 1985, touring

42 Pinal NOW! July 2022

nationally, and has written for other comics, including Jay Leno, Bill Hicks, and Craig Shoemaker. He teaches an online school for both new and experienced comics. While at The Roost, Skrzypczak says he is hoping the guests try out the menu, expecting fresh made food with “giant plates and amazing combinations.” “Our menu has a fusion of classic burgers, wraps, salads, sandwiches and amazing pasta dishes,” Skrzypczak says. Vegetarian and gluten-free options are available, he says. Of course, with the comedy one would expect adult beverages. The Roost has a cocktail menu with plenty of summertime drinks and a wide variety of craft beers to go along with the laughs for the night. Be advised, the show itself is not

for children or for people sensitive to politics, sexuality or any of today’s hot topics. At times, it is “nothing offlimits” humor. Along with Comedy Night, The Roost will not slow down for summer, adding Tuesday Night Karaoke while keeping its Saturday Late-Night Karaoke. Friday nights will remain open for those who want to get out and dance with friends. Skrzypczak says he is planning more events including Paint N’ Sip. Those interested in the events scheduled at The Roost can follow on Facebook or Instagram. The Roost Sports Bar and Café 20800 N. John Wayne Pkwy, No. 101 www.theroostaz.com 520.568-5338
