A Rare Gem: ’61 Impala SS 409 by John Stapleton
You can say it is just in Clint Hindelang’s blood. He says his dad Rudy was a “greaser,” a weekend street racer in Southern California who used to drive a ’59 Impala. His mother Charmaine also was into cars. She was the one who bought the rare ’61 Impala SS for her father, who only drove the car for about six months before passing. It then sat in the garage for years, collecting dust and scratch marks. Hindelang, a Casa Grande resident, is 50 now but says he can remember back to when he was 5 and climbing around the Impala. He says there’s still three “little scratches” in the back window from him sliding down. In 1998, Charmaine decided she wanted to restore the ’61 Impala. She wanted a “better ride” than her husband’s truck. She asked her son to help because he was already into rebuilding cars and trucks, making them car show-ready. When Hindelang asked what color, she
14 Pinal NOW! August 2022

immediately knew, Sunset Pearl Orange. “I said, OK mom, what else?” Hindelang says she responded: “A super loud stereo system and four bucket seats, with a big console — and chrome everything you can.” Hindelang had a shop in Mesa where he was able to make the modifications. Vehicle product maker Meguiar’s saw the Impala. They requested to feature it at their booth for the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) convention in Las Vegas. From there it made the cover of Super Chevy Magazine. In 2005, Charmaine passed away.
In her memory, Hindelang continued taking the Impala to car shows, racking up trophies. Even though the Impala is “resting” in his garage, Hindelang says he still plans to chrome everything underneath, but cherishes the memories and smile it brought his mother. “She saw it done,” he says. “And she loved cruising in it.” The ’61 Impala SS 409 is one of only 142 produced by Chevy. The value of the car may be in the hundred thousands, but for Hindelang, the memories of his mother makes the car priceless — and not for sale.

Cool-Off Destination: Yogurt Jungle by John Stapleton
Finding an affordable place where the entire family can escape those stir-crazy feelings of being trapped in A.C. all day, can be difficult. Yogurt Jungle is the perfect little getaway spot for everyone. Whether as an alternative meal option or just a cool treat, Yogurt Jungle offers 12 different flavors of froyo and 60 different options for toppings. The Johnson family took over the business in 2015. “We have always loved Yogurt Jungle, even before we owned it,” Michelle Johnson says. The timing was right, she says, because she had just finished her master’s degree and her husband Bo had been building his collectible reselling business. There was definitely a learning curve in testing out what worked and what didn’t work. There was also competition with another franchise

operation that had set up shop in Maricopa. At the time, the Maricopa market couldn’t support two frozen yogurt shops but Yogurt Jungle prevailed while the other business eventually closed up shop. When the pandemic hit, Yogurt Jungle nearly closed its doors. However, the community of Maricopa rallied to save the shop. “Things got ugly really quick,” Johnson says. “When we were supposed to be going into our busiest time was when things were coming to a halt. We saw the reality coming fast that Yogurt Jungle would not survive the pandemic going the rate it was. “We pleaded with the community that we needed their support. Nothing seemed to be working. We took the drastic measures and showed our financials from the month of April 2019 and compared it to the month of April 2020, to show the
community how drastic and dire the situation truly was.” Johnson says the community heard their cries for help and rallied behind them “like the amazing community we know and love.” Customers came in a bought gift cards for when things would settle down. “Maricopa showed us they loved us and wanted us to stay around as much as we wanted to,” she says. The shop has since recovered. Johnson says what makes Yogurt Jungle unique is that every visit can be different with their rotating options. They have also added Jungle Jar Shakes; customers get to keep the glass jar. The most successful ingredient, though, Johnson says, is the family environment. They are considering and looking to expand to another location in the county.

Sip N’ Shop Now at Ak-Chin Circle Entertainment Center

by John Stapleton
Twice a month for the summer months of June, July and August, this shopping event is sponsored by The Maricopa Real Estate Co. Local vendors, arts and crafters, nonprofits and small businesses can set up a table inside the complex. “This is a great opportunity for local vendors and businesses to showcase themselves,” says Brady Murray of The Maricopa Real Estate Co. “It’s tough for businesses to have that personal interaction during the summer months but Ak-Chin Circle Entertainment Center is the perfect venue for everyone to get out of the house. “You can get a bite to eat, go bowling, let the kids play video games, watch movies and now do a little shopping or just connect with a business.”
42 Pinal NOW! August 2022
He says his company wants to support economic growth: “These Sip N’ Shops give an opportunity to do that. You never know what small business is going to take off, and sometimes all it takes is just making the right connection. “We appreciate Ak-Chin Circle Entertainment Center for being so welcoming and working together on this for the community as a whole.” Lois Wiege of D & L Crafts says they are happy to return to the complex. They had put some of their indoor events on hold during the pandemic. “We love going to Ak-Chin Circle Entertainment Center and setting up,” Wiege says. “For us, we realize it is a matter of consistency, and in the summer we don’t have the opportunities because most local
events are planned for the winter and spring months. “Being inside is great, and even if we have a slow sales day we are meeting people who make it a point to return or they call us about something they saw and they made the decision to purchase. Everything has been going smoothly and we look forward to the upcoming ones.” If a business, nonprofit or vendor is interested in registering, visit eventbrite.com and follow Copa TV for all notifications.
