History
FOUNDED IN 1864 as a pioneer settlement on the edge of American civilization in what was then New Mexico-Arizona territory, Prescott retains its frontier spirit and western pride. Prescott staked its claim as a place unlike any other when 150 years ago, the first 50 inhabitants hand built 14 log structures from native timbers. That helped define the community. Today, with a population exceeding 40,000, Prescott still is rugged, picturesque and altogether distinctly proud.

Dining
AS YOU STROLL PAST any of the more than 700 buildings on the National Register of Historic Places cited on the National Historic Register, you’ll be tempted to step in for a fast meal—or a fine dining experience. You’ll probably be pleased that of the more than 200 places to eat in the city, a majority are “hometown” owned and managed. They range from “Mom n’ Pop” eateries to sophisticated dining in elegant surroundings. You’ll be surprised at the ethnic variety available, too. Of course, you can sample locally brewed awardwinning beverages at micro breweries or wine-tasting shops. You may want to try one of the newest. It is a recently opened meadery, just up Gurley Street on the way to Sharlot Hall Museum. If you’re of such a mind, visits some local pubs and try some of the wines which come from Arizona wineries and vineyards.

“Howdy” or “Nice to see you.” In the center of town, looming large over a square block ringed by century-old trees is the oft-photographed granite Courthouse. It’s the focal point for many festivals and events from late April through October.
A Special Place KNOWN AS ARIZONA’S CHRISTMAS CITY, during winter months, the area around the Courthouse is home for unequaled holiday festivities. You won’t want to miss any of them. Festivities begin in late November after Thanksgiving. The first is the colorful Holiday Light Parade,” where elaborate decorated floats and holiday music will have you smiling. Ultimately, you may wind up at the community bonfire, just up the street at Mile High Middle School. Then the first week of December features the colorful daytime Christmas Parade, with more than 75 entries. It involves almost everyone in town. Just up the street two blocks, you’ll enjoy a Frontier Christmas staged by the Sharlot Hall Museum. You’ll be transported back to how pioneers celebrated Christmas. If you like holiday music, you’ll relish performances of more than 100 local musicians—students, townspeople, churches and individuals—during the melodious Acker Musical Showcase the second weekend of December. Businesses throughout downtown open doors to performers, who sing, play instruments and entertain – and invite you to join in.

hiking, biking (and sometimes horse) trails wiggle through the natural scenic beauty of the community and the Prescott National Forest. Difficulty? From “Novice to “Expert.”
The 54-mile Prescott Circle Trail will challenge you. A complete list of the Mile High Trail System –70 plus miles of it– is available at the at the Chamber of Commerce Visitor Center on Goodwin Street south of Courthouse Plaza. www.prescott-az.gov. Don’t miss the Granite Dells, where unique rock formations thrust out of the ground and tempt hikers and rock-climbers. If you’re into birding, Prescott’s the place. More than 360 species of birds inhabit the area. The Prescott Audubon Society www.prescottaudubon.org can provide full details about where to go and when.
Prescott has Water & Parks If you want water activities, you’ll enjoy the three local lakes—Willow and Watson, both on the northwest edge of the City. The third is Goldwater. Maintained by the City of Prescott, the 15-acre lake is located in lush pine forests surrounded by rugged mountain areas. The City of Prescott has boat and bicycle rentals available www.prescott outdoors.com, 928-925-1410 Two others—Lynx Lake and Granite Basin Lake—are just outside the City limits. If you like kayaking and canoeing—and fishing—you can visit any of these lakes. Of course, all have picnicking and camping sites. 39

Seniors now have greater flexibility and new opportunity to purchase their retirement home 60
visit-Prescott.com
A new FHA rule enabling the purchase of a home with a reverse mortgage is giving senior adults greater flexibility when it comes to where they live and the type of home they live in. This new means of financing the purchase of a home has created the opportunity for seniors to downsize, move to a house that is more comfortable, safe, and is convenient to services, or move closer to family. The qualifying age for a reverse mortgage is 62 or older, and it does not affect social security and medicare benefits. “We are experiencing a surge of seniors who are buying a home with the reverse mortgage,” Bill Binkey, Frontier Financial said. A house purchased under this new program must be a primary residence and will require a large down payment. However there are no monthly payments required as long as one spouse remains in the home. To learn more about the reverse mortgage purchase program, you can contact Bill Binkey. He will provide a free reverse mortgage informational package and confidential estimate. For more information call 928-237-9599.

Cottonwood, The Heart of the Wine Trail
Located in the Verde Valley, Cottonwood is ideally situated between the heat of the desert and the coolers temperatures of Arizona’s high country. Old Town retains the charm of those early beginnings, and the Verde Valley Wine Trail is not to be missed!

Town of Jerome
Stroll the winding switchback streets of what was once known as the “wickedest town in the West.” At one time the fourth largest town in Arizona, Jerome was a mining community founded a few years after the Civil War on the side of 5,200 foot high Cleopatra Hill. The mines are now abandoned, but Jerome thrives as a popular tourist community with dozens of unusual shops, boutiques, exhibits, museums and restaurants.
