Rachael Beck — Rachael Plays Guitar — was born in Denver and raised throughout Arizona. She always had her headphones on and sneakers laced up for basketball. Her inspiration came from the old school blues of Buddy Guy and Hendrix to Mariah Carey introducing her to the world of hip hop and R&B to Jonny Lang and John Mayer, and the soulful grooves of later Mac Miller productions with Anderson Paak vibes. Rachael moved to Los Angeles in 2014 to work in the industry. She was a tour manager/personal assistant for an Atlantic Records rapper before focusing fulltime on her own music. Look for her at the Birdcage Saloon and other great musical venues in Prescott!

PRESCOTT NOW Rewind

¡Andalusia! ¡Andalusia!, presented by Maestro Peter Bay of Arizona Philharmonic, was a dramatic exploration of the music of southern Spain. Featured in the concert was Impulso: Symphonic Dances for Marimba, Flamenco Guitar, and Dancer by Henry Flurry and Chris Jácome. The show included solos by Maria Flurry on marimba, Chris Burton-Jácome on flamenco guitar, and Lena Jácome as flamenco dancer. Impulso melded the flamenco and classical traditions into an exciting journey of passion, tragedy, and joy. This is the first time this entire work was heard in Prescott. The show was held at the Yavapai College Performing Arts Center on Sunday, January 9, 2022.

Fifty years ago, the city of Prescott welcomed a Hollywood film crew & helped make a West n Classic. BY STUART ROSEBROOK , SON OF JUNIOR BONNER SCREENWRITER JEB ROSEBROOK

Junior Bonner, written by the late screenwriter and Orme School graduate, Jeb Rosebrook, is a deeply personal homage to family, historic Prescott and the small towns and ranchlands of Yavapai County. One reason the film was successful—and remains a snapshot in time and history—was its location manager, William Pierce, the local Arizona Film Commission representative, president of the Fair Association, and the Prescott Jaycees rodeo chairman. The local businessman was well connected, friend to all and not intimidated by Peckinpah or in awe of McQueen. Pierce actually drove the leading man around on his motorcycle to get to locations during the parade sequence. Pierce’s local connections also helped secure a local track for McQueen and his son to race their dirt bikes.

Pierce was successful in landing the production of Junior Bonner for Prescott and Yavapai County because he recognized the locales my father Jeb Rosebrook wrote about in the script and was able to open doors to secure all the film’s locations. Pierce’s contribution to making the film a reality was so appreciated by the production company, the film ends with a heartfelt message of special thanks to the people of Prescott and Pierce. This heartfelt thanks we should continue to express, for without Bill Pierce and the generosity of spirit of the people of Prescott and Yavapai County, we would not be celebrating the 50th anniversary of the 1971 production and its subsequent release in 1972.

Join us as we welcome Steve McQueen’s son, Chad, as the Grand Marshal and Bill Pierce, location manager for “Junior Bonner” as the Honorary Grand Marshal for the 2022 Prescott Frontier Days Rodeo Parade! With southern hospitality in mind, and her families love of good barbecue, she set out to design a pleasant atmosphere where guests could get an inexpensive, delicious meal made from scratch the authentic way using steel smokers and actual hard wood, but yet, not in the usual garage-style atmosphere common to most barbecue restaurants. She wanted a place where anyone — from the budget conscious student to the affluent retiree- would feel comfortable, relaxed. Her team built the restaurant, created the recipes, hired a friendly, hardworking staff and launched the first COLT Grill BBQ & Spirits in Northern Arizona in 2016. The affordable “walk-up” grill in Old Town, Cottonwood was a hit, and the enterprise continues to resonate with both locals and tourists alike. The extensive menu centers around smoked meats — slow smoked the authentic way over (literally) tons of oak hard wood fed into gigantic steel smokers out in front of each location. While the pit-masters butcher, handrub and slow smoke the meats, the

kitchen crew hand grinds fresh prime beef for their multi award-winning hamburgers and savory turkey sausage, as well as work with fresh produce for crisp salads and bountiful tacos. The highest quality ingredients are chopped, sliced, diced and mixed into flavorful desserts, sauces and sides to pair with, and slather on, tender baby back ribs, juicy beef brisket, smoked chicken, turkey and flavorful pulled pork. At each bar you’ll find friendly bar tenders creating fantastic cocktails and pouring delicious brews to highlight the hand-made menu. Stay for the honky-tonk and enjoy classic country music every Saturday night by the best musicians in the Prescott area. The Old Town, Cottonwood location serves up a hearty country breakfast with unique twists, such as the eggs Benedict with smoked brisket, mushrooms and spinach over cheesy jalapeno cornbread, topped with the remarkable Santa Fe sauce. With locations in Cottonwood, Prescott Valley, downtown Prescott on Whiskey Row, and the newest location coming in the Village of Oak Creek, Sedona, in March, COLT also offers affordable, impressive catering for weddings and events of every size and occasion. What is a Seed Library? The Prescott Public Library is excited to offer an addition to our Library of Things collection – the Seed Library! The Seed Library offers vegetable, fruit, herb, and flower seeds suitable for our local growing conditions and seasons. This program is designed for beginning growers, but gardeners of every level are invited to check out seeds.

in the know The Seed Library is a partnership between Prescott Public Library, and Prescott Farmers Market. Partial funding for the Seed Library is provided by the Friends of Prescott Public Library. Library Hours: Sunday 1-5 Mon, Fri, Sat 9-5 Tues - Thurs 9-8

Prescott Seed Library is in Full Bloom

Varieties of fruits, vegetables, herbs and flowers will be available throughout the spring and summer at our Seed Library. Library users are able to “check out” seed packets with their library card, and they will be yours to keep, plant and enjoy! Prescott Farmers Market Executive Director Kathleen Yetman collaborated with librarians Ruthie Hewitt and Martha Baden to continue supplying library users and garden lovers with seeds. Seeds were chosen with care and are open-pollinated varieties that will do well in the region and can be started in spring inside and outside. Seeds were aquired from reputable growers, our local Schaffer Farms and skilled gardener Molly Beverly. The Seed Library is located on the

second floor of the library in a card catalog of yore. Patrons can also find a collection of gardening books there. The library plans to host programs with gardening experts who can share their expertise and encourage novice gardeners. Stay tuned! The Seed Library is part of our Library of Things collection, which includes hiking backpacks, culture passes, Wi-Fi hotspots, Chromebooks and iPad minis. Packets, promotional materials and books are funded through the Friends of the Prescott Public Library and library funds. For more information about the Prescott Seed Library, visit www.prescottlibrary.info/seedlibrary or call 928.777.1526.

Quad Cities Housing Market Posts Strong Start to 2022

Home sales in the Quad Cities started the year 11% above January 2021 as buyer competition for the historically low number of homes available continued the months-long trend of rising selling prices, according to the housing market report by the Prescott Area Association of REALTORS® (PAAR). The median home selling price in the Quad Cities increased 16.4% compared to a year ago to reach $415,000. There were 291 closed sales in January. Prescott led the way with an 18% increase in sales compared to last January with 118 homes sold. Homes went under contract in a median time of 13 days. The January 2022 median selling price in Prescott was $555,000, an increase of 16.1% from a year ago. Prescott Valley posted the largest increase in median selling price growth at 19.6% above January 2021,

84 Prescott NOW! March 2022

and homes there had the shortest time on the market at a median of eight days. There were 77 closed home sales in Prescott Valley, an increase of 2.7% from a year ago. “Strong buyer demand for homes in the Quad Cities is continuing to drive stiff competition for a historically low number of homes listed for sale,” said George Beitzel, 2022 PAAR president. “Looking ahead, Prescott area REALTORS® expect buyers will remain very active and that price growth will continue even as more homes are added to the spring market and interest rates tick upward.” “This market offers great opportunities for sellers,” Beitzel said. “I would encourage anyone who is thinking about selling their home and purchasing another one in our communities to consult with a REALTOR® who can guide you through the sale as well as assist you in finding

your next home in this challenging market.” Chino Valley had 32 closed home sales, an 8.6% decrease from January 2021. The median sales price was up 11.3% to reach $363,000. DeweyHumbolt had 22 closed home sales, a 10% increase from a year ago. The median sales price was $400,500. There were 423 homes listed for sale in the Quad Cities at the end of January, a 33.4% increase from the January 2021 total of 317. Editor’s Note: All data is compiled from the Multiple Listing Service of the Prescott Area Association of REALTORS® and includes singlefamily, manufactured, mobile, modular, condos and townhouse residential activity in Prescott, Prescott Valley, Chino Valley and DeweyHumboldt.
