About the Cover

Photo by Blushing Cactus Photography When a jazz and classically-trained trumpet player from small-town Ohio becomes a singersongwriter, guitarist and music teacher, you get the original songs of Stephy Leigh Griffin. Her voice has been compared to Loretta Lynn, Ellie King, Wanda Jackson and Emmylou Harris. She plays solo or with her full band, Stephy Leigh & the Lullaby League. You can also hear her play trumpet in one of Arizona’s only 1920s hot jazz bands, King Copper. Stephy brings her raw edge to every performance as she tells her story through music. Currently, she spends most of her time in the studio recording her new album. Stephy is proud to represent Prescott, Arizona’s ever-growing Americana music scene.

Fifty years ago, the city of Prescott welcomed a Hollywood film crew & helped make a West n Classic. BY STUART ROSEBROOK , SON OF JUNIOR BONNER SCREENWRITER JEB ROSEBROOK

Junior Bonner, written by the late screenwriter and Orme School graduate, Jeb Rosebrook, is a deeply personal homage to family, historic Prescott and the small towns and ranchlands of Yavapai County. One reason the film was successful—and remains a snapshot in time and history—was its location manager, William Pierce, the local Arizona Film Commission representative, president of the Fair Association, and the Prescott Jaycees rodeo chairman. The local businessman was well connected, friend to all and not intimidated by Peckinpah or in awe of McQueen. Pierce actually drove the leading man around on his motorcycle to get to locations during the parade sequence. Pierce’s local connections also helped secure a local track for McQueen and his son to race their dirt bikes.

Pierce was successful in landing the production of Junior Bonner for Prescott and Yavapai County because he recognized the locales my father Jeb Rosebrook wrote about in the script and was able to open doors to secure all the film’s locations. Pierce’s contribution to making the film a reality was so appreciated by the production company, the film ends with a heartfelt message of special thanks to the people of Prescott and Pierce. This heartfelt thanks we should continue to express, for without Bill Pierce and the generosity of spirit of the people of Prescott and Yavapai County, we would not be celebrating the 50th anniversary of the 1971 production and its subsequent release in 1972.

Join us as we welcome Steve McQueen’s son, Chad, as the Grand Marshal and Bill Pierce, location manager for “Junior Bonner” as the Honorary Grand Marshal for the 2022 Prescott Frontier Days Rodeo Parade! Barley Hound Old Fashioned A unique take on the Old Fashioned includes the Phat Fashion with duck fat infused bourbon made completely in-house for a smoky and surprising twist on this classic cocktail standard.

the low down Skyler Reeves opened the Barley Hound in May of 2015. With a large dog friendly patio, welcoming casual atmosphere, and outstanding food and drinks it has quickly become one of Prescott’s favorite restaurants.

Photography by Debby Wolvos

The Barley Hound The forefront of the culinary experience As the first original concept by the Vivili Hospitality Group, The Barley Hound is an American gastropub at the forefront of putting Prescott on the map as its own eclectic culinary destination that’s earned it national recognition. The restaurant is just south of the historic Courthouse Square in a Victorian-style home dating to early the 1900s. Its expansive and dogfriendly patio is undeniably the best place in Prescott for al fresco dining coupled with an even larger, covered backyard patio and a small but intimate dining room inside. While the quaint exterior may be unassuming, the creativity found on the menu is anything but. Leveraging the combined experience and dynamic vision of Chef Tony Burris, general manager Sarah Burke-Gomez and proprietor Skyler Reeves, The Barley Hound pairs drinks and dishes for both the adventurous eater and those who prefer familiarity. The menu is complete with highquality ingredients and thoughtful

dishes made with fresh and local ingredients. The drink menu includes inventive cocktails made with house-infused spirits, a curated wine list and all Arizona brewed beers. A unique take on the Old Fashioned includes the Phat Fashion with duck fat infused bourbon made completely inhouse for a smoky and surprising twist on this classic cocktail standard. While The Barley Hound is a favorite among locals and travelers, made famous for its ‘Merica Burger and Truffle Duck Fat Fries, such chef-driven creations as the brisket and pork belly meatballs served with chili-infused orange marmalade and scallops prepared with fresh fennel, tomato jam and grapefruit round out the food menu. Reservations are recommended, and expanded hours for spring and summer are coming soon. For more information or to make a reservation, visit www.thebarleyhound.com.

Quad Cities Home Selling Prices Spike as Sales Cool

The February median home selling price in the Quad Cities jumped more than 15% compared to last February despite home sales lagging as supply failed to meet demand, according to the housing market report released by the Prescott Area Association of REALTORS® (PAAR). The median home selling price in the Quad Cities was $475,000 in February, while closed sales totaled 265. Prescott posted the highest February median selling price in the region at $575,750, an increase of 16.3% compared to February 2021. Sales in the area decreased by 11.9% to finish the month at 118. Homes went under contract in a median time of 10 days. Prescott Valley’s median sales price grew by 10.8% from a year ago to reach $437,500 in February. Five days represents the median time a home

70 Prescott NOW! April 2022

was on the market. The 96 homes sold during February represent a decrease of 5.5% from February 2021. “Homebuyer demand remains exceptionally strong throughout the Quad Cities,” said George Beitzel, 2022 PAAR president. “The primary headwind slowing home sales is the scarcity of homes listed for sale. Newly listed homes are selling quickly, keeping the overall number of homes listed for sale and homebuyers’ options at historically low levels.” “Prescott Area REALTORS® are optimistic that sellers, who stayed on the sidelines during the uncertainty of 2021, will begin to return to the housing market now that the pandemic has eased,” Beitzel said. “It will continue to be a seller’s market throughout this year and likely into 2023 given the combination of fewer existing homes being listed and the slow pace of new home building

throughout the Quad Cities.” Chino Valley had the greatest median sales price increase in the region, jumping by 26.5% to reach $430,000 on 25 closed home sales. The number of closed sales was 21.9% below the February 2021 total. Dewey-Humboldt had 26 closed home sales, the same as this time a year ago. The median sales price was $419,500. There were 410 homes listed for sale in the Quad Cities at the end of February, a 22% increase from the February 2021 total of 336. Editor’s Note: All data is compiled from the Multiple Listing Service of the Prescott Area Association of REALTORS® and includes singlefamily, manufactured, mobile, modular, condos and townhouse residential activity in Prescott, Prescott Valley, Chino Valley and DeweyHumboldt.

Verde Valley Wine Festival Back in Action

The Verde Valley Wine Festival returns April 29-30 after a two-year COVIDinduced hiatus, just in time to celebrate the area’s official designation as an American Vivicultural Area (AVA) by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. “We are thrilled to be able to host the event again this year,” said Maynard James Keenan, founder of the festival and owner of Caduceus Cellars and Merkin Vineyards. “Guests will be treated to some of Arizona’s best wines, taste some great food in a picturesque setting and be able to learn about our growing viniculture. We look forward to welcoming back old friends and introducing newcomers to this great event.” Northern Arizona’s premiere wine event has a new location for its return — the Old Town Activity Park, 187 E. Pima in Cottonwood. To showcase everything the region has to offer, the festival plans to feature more than 20 Arizona wineries and a variety of Arizona brewers and distillers, plus dozens of culinary options and local crafters/exhibitors. The celebration begins with a VIP platinum winemaker April 29 at the Cottonwood Community Clubhouse at 805 N. Main St. This special event will include premium wine and culinary options, a live auction and live music. Ticketholders will have the opportunity

to bid on exclusive wine and travel packages and unique items created by local artists and artisans. The festival itself will open April 30 to VIP ticket holders at 11 AM and at noon to general admission ticket holders. It will end at 5 PM. In addition to the wine, food, arts and craft vendors, attendees will enjoy live music throughout the day from three local bands. The festival organizers are proud to be working in a collaborative partnership with two nonprofit organizations this year: the Arizona Vignerons Alliance (AZVA) and the Arizona Wine Growers Association (AWGA). Tickets for both the Friday winemaker dinner and Saturday’s events are available now at www. verdevalleywinefestival.com. To receive the latest information on the festival, sign up for the Verde Valley Wine Festival newsletter. For more information on the Verde Valley Wine Festival, tickets, sponsorship opportunities and the AZVA or AWGA visit www. verdevalleywinefestival.com. U.S. Integrity Partners with Cliff Castle Casino Hotel to Ensure Betting Integrity

U.S. Integrity (USI) in March announced its comprehensive partnership with Cliff Castle Casino Hotel. This partnership follows the launch of the casino’s new sportsbook lounge on the main casino floor; officially opened Jan. 14. In addition to adding the sportsbook lounge, over the past year Cliff Castle Casino Hotel has remodeled its Verde and Strata bars, players club and all gaming areas to give the entire casino a refreshed and modern look. Sports betting is the newest offering at Cliff Castle Casino Hotel, opened in 1995, which already included slot machines, table games, multiple dining outlets, hotel and lodge. The sportsbook is open seven days a week 3 to 10 p.m. Monday-Friday and 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday-Sunday, with kiosk wagering available during all hours of casino operations. “We are extremely excited to be working with U.S. Integrity as we add sports betting to our casino offerings,” said Aaron Moss, General Manager of Cliff Castle Casino Hotel. “Having

USI as a partner ensures the safest bets for our guests as they have the ability to identify potentially suspicious wagering activity in real time.” USI conducts analysis across dozens of data sets to identify irregular contest-level, officiating and wagering patterns. The addition of these services helps ensure that the casino can offer fair and safe sports betting for the community. “U.S. Integrity is proud to partner with Cliff Castle Casino Hotel and assist with the protection of their sports-betting platform,” said Matthew Holt, USI’s CEO and co-founder. “USI’s mission is to provide conflictfree, best-in-class insights and compliance solutions to our clients. We are looking forward to working with the outstanding team at Cliff Castle Casino Hotel. Their commitment to fair and safe sports wagering aligns with the integrity standards USI aims to uphold throughout the legalized sports-betting market.” For additional information, visit www.cliffcastlecasinohotel.com/ sportsbook/ or www.usintegrity.com.
