Howdy, Am ican Cowboy Era! It survived two world wars, the Texas Revolution, the US-Mexican war, the American Civil War, and the 2020 pandemic. In the early years of the United States, it started as a simple ranch versus ranch competition, with no chutes, gates, or time limits. As Larry Bastian wrote and Garth Brooks sang: It’s boots and chaps It’s cowboy hats It’s spurs and latigo It’s the ropes and the reins And the joy and the pain And they call the thing rodeo You are witnessing the culmination of hundreds of years of skills that came to be known as rodeo or rodear, to surround. It is a magnificent mixture of cultures, genders, and traditions that showcase the ultimate human and animal athletes. What we know of rodeo today most likely started with Spanish ranchers and Mexican vaqueros, whose traditions began a century earlier with the conquistadores. Blending Anglo and Spanish cultures led to the birth of the American cowboy era in the early 1800s. The real-life skills used to break horses to ride and to catch cattle were brought from the frontier ranches into local towns. Early cowboy contests were informal events with cowboys and vaqueros testing their work skills against one another. Prescott, Arizona Territory, held the first annual competition on July 4, 1888; the term “rodeo” was first used there in 1924.

Our Prescott Rodeo defined much of what we know today of the sport of rodeo. Seeing the popularity of cowboy contests, a committee of local merchants planned and promoted the activities, then established the structure that is still seen today: establishing rules for competition, inviting cowboys and cowgirls to compete, charging admission, and awarding prizes. The original events included bronco riding, steer roping, and cow pony races. In 1889, the first steer riding competition was held, later this event became modern bull riding. By 1917, calf roping was added at Prescott. Prescott Frontier Days®, Inc., is made up of people of all ages from local communities who share their time to put on events each year. There are currently over 200 active rodeo members and during the peak period around July 4th, that number increases by an additional 700 volunteers. They help with the World’s Oldest Rodeo Cowboy Golf Tournament, the Rodeo Parade, the Happy Hearts rodeo for exceptional children, an Old Timers’ Gathering, and of course, the eight thrilling performances of the World’s Oldest Rodeo.

Home Selling Prices Jump

25% in the Quad Cities during March Prescott, AZ – April 8, 2022 – Home selling prices throughout the Quad Cities continued their months-long upward trend in March, jumping 25.3% compared to last March, while closed sales finished slightly ahead of March 2021, according to the housing market report released today by the Prescott Area Association of REALTORS® (PAAR). The median home selling price in the Quad Cities was $461,250 in March, while the number of closed sales totaled 414. Prescott led the way with the highest median home selling price increase, 32.3% compared to March 2021. The area’s median selling price of $653,250 was also the highest in the Quad Cities. The number of sales in the area decreased by 11% from March 2021 to finish the month at 146. Homes went under contract in a median time of six days. Prescott Valley’s median sales price grew by 32.1% from a year ago to reach $462,500 in March. Five days

represents the median time a home was on the market there. The 125 homes sold during March represent an increase of 19% compared to last March. “For homebuyers in the Quad Cities, the March data offers welcome news in terms of adding new options to their search, particularly in Prescott Valley where the number of newly listed homes approached a 50% increase compared to a year ago,” said George Beitzel, 2022 PAAR president. “Prescott Area REALTORS® are optimistic that sellers, recognizing their opportunities in today’s housing market, will continue this trend into the late spring and summer months. “Buyers remain very active throughout the Quad Cities and are highly motivated to find their next home before any additional increase in mortgage rates,” continued Beitzel. “We anticipate it will continue to be a competitive market with the balance tipped toward sellers throughout the

remainder of this year. However, buyer enthusiasm may be curbed as rising prices and mortgage rates strain their budgets.” Chino Valley had a median price increase of 10.4% compared to a year ago, reaching $392,500 in March. The 38 closed home sales were down 13.6% compared to March 2021. Dewey-Humboldt had 39 closed home sales, an increase of 56% from a year ago. The median sales price was $435,000, an increase of 17.6%. There were 472 homes listed for sale in the Quad Cities at the end of March, a 37.2% increase from the March 2021 total of 344. Editor’s Note: All data is compiled from the Multiple Listing Service of the Prescott Area Association of REALTORS® and includes singlefamily, manufactured, mobile, modular, condos and townhouse residential activity in Prescott, Prescott Valley, Chino Valley and DeweyHumboldt.

Alta Vista Garden Club Offers June Garden Tour

by Nicki Elms, Carol Westfall, and Robin Borok, Alta Vista Garden Club

Whether you are a gardener seeking beauty in a variety of designs, inspiration for your own garden, or you just enjoy strolling through a feast for the eyes take the Prescott Garden Tour June 4. Alta Vista Garden Club sponsors the 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. biennial tour. This selfguided tour features five gardens, each with a slightly different take on fourseason gardening. Perhaps you will be attracted to the serenity of a water feature trickling through a meditation area; perhaps you will be refreshed by the gentle breeze of a kinetic sculpture; perhaps you will be delighted by a riot of color designed to attract birds, butterflies and bees; or perhaps you will be moved by a garden memorial to a beloved pet. There is something here for everyone. You will meet gardeners coping with wildly fluctuating temperatures, arid conditions and wildlife — deer, javelina, rabbits, pack rats, birds and the occasional bobcat, mountain lion and bear — all eager to turn gardens into banquets. Plus, one thing we all have in common, waiting for the monsoons. If you question how beautiful gardens can thrive in a place with erratic

moisture, you will see the answers in xeriscaping, water capture, low-flow irrigation systems and native plantings. Club members will be on hand in each garden to answer questions and lead discussions. Tickets are limited and go on sale April 1; tickets are a donation of $20 per person. On or after that date, visit the club website, www.altavistagardenclub. org for a list of local merchants where tickets may be obtained. They also are available on the website through PayPal, which charge a $1 per ticket processing fee. On the day of the tour, programs, maps and wrist band IDs are available from 8 to 11 a.m. at the ticket area at the flagpole of Yavapai Community College, 1100 Sheldon St. in Prescott. Any remaining tickets may be purchased there on the day of the tour. Proceeds from this event support the work of Alta Vista Garden Club in local education, conservation, and beautification. Alta Vista Garden Club is one of the oldest civic organizations in Prescott, celebrating the 71st anniversary of its founding. The club is affiliated with both the National and Arizona Federation of Garden Clubs.

PRESCOTTNOW Rewind

Prescott Bridal Affaire Expo The 2022 Prescott Bridal Affaire Expo was held March 6, 2022, for the 17th year, debuting in a new venue while offering the same fantastic selection of venues and vendors who make every wedding feel like one of a kind! The Event Center at the Sam Hill Warehouse and Hilton Garden Inn provided a freshly updated yet historic space for engaged couples, their families and friends to meet with the best wedding and event service providers available in Northern Arizona. It was filled to overflowing with wedding gowns and tuxes, music, photography, wedding coordinators, floral, rentals, cake samples, food samples and much more. Presented by StarStruck Event Planning, the area’s largest bridal expo had swag bags and mimosas for everyone and handed out raffle prizes every hour, plus a grand prize worth $5,000!

A legacy of real estate. A mastery of real estate marketing. At Russ Lyon Sotheby's International Realty, we have found that adequately representing unique properties requires unique skills. Over the years, our agents have developed innovative marketing tools and relationships with some of the most qualified buyers in the world. They have also developed a love for getting to know a house down to its most intimate detail. In the end, we don't so much sell a home as part with it. To market a distinctive home requires uncommon knowledge and resources, allow us to represent you.
