Photo by Karen ShawHike Johns Tank Trail for Eagle-Eye View
The Johns Tank Trail is notable for its short yet moderately challenging path up and down a ridge in the Bradshaw Mountain foothills and verdant surroundings. But it’s perhaps best known as the trail that traverses the bald eagle nesting area adjacent to Lynx Lake. It is subject to closures from December through June to protect their offspring.
Anyone hiking this trail throughout summer and fall will understand why these majestic birds favor this particular slice of the forest. Towering ponderosas, junipers and oaks wave over a floor of grass and soil that support numerous species of wildlife. The
trout-laden lake beckons just to the west while a gentle incline leads to higher ground with panoramic views. After summering up north, the eagles start to return to the area in the fall so keep your eyes peeled!
This mile-long route links the popular Lynx Recreation and Salida Gulch trails, which draw nature lovers into the dense vegetation and chapparal grasslands that are both featured in the Greater Prescott area. Starting from its western origin at Lynx Lake, it starts out easy before starting to head uphill while swinging to the south, all in densely vegetated soil and pine-scented air. After reaching the Salida Gulch
Trail, trekkers can turn right and hike a few steps before reaching a short path to the left taking them to Johns Tank itself, a shallow, muddy hydration source for forest animals. They can then choose to turn around and go back down the lovely slope to the lake or take the Salida Gulch’s tour through habitats ranging from high desert to woodlands.
The Lynx Recreation (a.k.a. Lakeshore) Trail is also a worthy destination, hugging the banks of this especially pretty reservoir for more than 2 miles. But the Johns Tank Trail, particularly because of its limited availability, clearly justifies a visit by itself.
Prescott Highland Games and Celtic Faire, Sept. 24-25, 2022
This 16th celebration of Scottish history and culture unfurled by the Prescott Area Celtic Society across Prescott’s Watson Lake Park, featuring two days of continuous bagpiping, highland dancing and other entertainment, along with whisky tasting, heavy athletics and food and merchandise vendors. Athletic competitors impressed audiences with feats of strength in the caber toss, hammer throw and other contests while pipers, dancers and drummers faced off for their own trophies. Scottish clans and societies also set up tents for attendees to learn about their ancestry or simply learn lots about Scotland.
Prescott, AZ – October 7, 2022 – The median sold price in the Quad Cities rose again in September, according to the housing market report released today by the Prescott Area Association of REALTORS® (PAAR). All four regions posted growth in median sales prices since the beginning of 2022.
Prescott recorded a 10.2% increase in median sales price last month, coming in at $605,971. The area also experienced the lowest numbers for active listings on the market, while median days on the market tracked at less than one month.
“Now more than ever it’s important to use a local REALTOR®, like a member of PAAR, who has the experience necessary to navigate this changing market,” said George Beitzel, 2022 PAAR President.
“The Quad Cities added almost 500 new listings last month,” Beitzel added. “A REALTOR® will be there to help you navigate the competition and guide you through the entire process.”
Chino Valley was the only region to experience a slight drop in median sales price last month of 10.5%. However, it led the region in new listings added to the market with a 55.3% increase.
Prescott Valley posted the second highest number of new listings with 166 new homes going on the market last month. The data also shows the area as having 4.5 months of inventory, the highest of all the regions.
Dewey-Humboldt experienced a 34.1% drop in new listings from this time last year and reported the lowest numbers of active inventory
in the region, with only 2.5 months available, according to market trends.
The 980 homes listed for sale in the Quad Cities region at the end of September reflect a doubling of available homes since this time last year.
The detailed reports are available here: https://dashboards. domusanalytics.com/v/ PrescottInfographic and https:// dashboards.domusanalytics. com/v/PrescottInfographicArea
Editor’s Note: All data is compiled from the Multiple Listing Service of the Prescott Area Association of REALTORS®and includes single-family, manufactured, mobile, modular, condos, and townhouse residential activity in Prescott, Prescott Valley, Chino Valley, and Dewey-Humboldt.

Empty Bowls: Thank You Prescott!
submitted by Prescott Empty Bowls2022 marked Empty Bowls’ 25th anniversary in Prescott, and after a two-year hiatus was back on the Courthouse Plaza! The event was held Sept. 18 at the Yavapai Courthouse Plaza, and the turnout was better than organizers anticipated.
People were able to select a handcrafted bowl made by local artists and two soups from 12 local restaurants.
A raffle of custom-made silver items helped the event raise money for local food banks, as well. Art objects, created by Prescott area artists were part of an online auction. Bidding opened on Sept.10 and closed Sept. 25.
Organizers asked local businesses for financial sponsorships, a first for Empty Bowls. Contributions were broken down into three tiers: - Silver Bowl — The Independent Order of Oddfellows Lodge No. 1
- Silver Ladle — Prescott Import Car Service, El Gato Azul, Torme
- Silver Spoon — Karyl Moore HomeSmart Realty, Ocean’s Three Talent Group, Van Gogh’s Ear Fine Art Gallery, Premier Eye Center, Peregrine Book Co., Raven Café.
In addition to our silver sponsors we would like to thank these local businesses that contributed to our event: Credit Union West, U-Haul Moving and Storage of Prescott, Panera Bread, Pangea Bakery and Café, Grama’s Bakery, Hotcakez Baking Co., Better Deal Printing and Marju Graphics.
We want to thank Leslie Matiacio, Amanda Chartier and Ann Hein from the Prescott High School Fine Arts Department for assisting Prescott High students in a 25th Anniversary logo contest. The winning logo, illustrated by Jay Robertson, was put on commemorative T-shirts and tote
bags sold at the event.
Entertainment was provided by Sucha Ruckus, who helped keep people in the line energized!
A huge thank you goes out to Mayor Phil Goode and Councilman Brandon Montoya (pictured above) for proclaiming September 18, 2022 Prescott Empty Bowls Day.
After everything is said and done, organizers anticipate distributing approximately $20,000 to local area food banks in 2022. For a list of recipient food banks from 2021 please go to our website below.

Keeping the
Authentic Bear Claws
Flour Stone Bakery is best known for its authentic bear claws, Danish pastries and freshly baked bread.
Flour Stone Bakery:
baking and decorating in Prescott Valley
Flour Stone Bakery opened its doors in 2015 and since has solidified itself as a town staple.
We own and operate this unique and cozy spot. We not only run a business together, we’ve spent the past 30 years raising a family and are now proud grandparents. The name Flour Stone holds a deeper meaning to us as it is a direct translation in Hebrew of our last name.
Igal is a generational baker, having his hand in the baking trade since age 13. In 1967 he immigrated to the United States from Israel. While working in a bakery, he met Kim. We began our relationship with a dream of having our own family and owning
our very own thriving bakery.
“We would talk endlessly about what we would offer and where the shop would be. It was a lot of dreaming,” Kim says.
When Flour Stone Bakery opened its doors in rural Arizona, it was a small shop operated by family members. The business grew so fast that we were able to achieve our goal and move the business to Prescott Valley in 2019.
The move proved to be one the best decisions for us because the bakery has flourished.
Flour Stone Bakery is best known for its authentic bear claws, Danish pastries and freshly baked bread. However, the main attraction is quickly becoming our custom cakes
and destination wedding cakes.
To date, Flour Stone has created hundreds of custom cakes for every occasion. Hand painting, palette knife art, and buttercream marbling are just a few of the decorating techniques used to create incredible and one-of-akind cakes for our customers.
Flour Stone has made a name for itself by not only creating amazing products, but also by keeping the traditional art of baking and cake decorating alive.
We are located at 2992 N. Park Ave., Suite C, in the heart of Town Center, Prescott Valley. Find us online at www.Flourstoneaz.com or follow us on Facebook and Instagram at Flour Stone Café.

44th Whiskey Row Marathon Attracts
by Ray NewtonMarathon training that started months — and in some cases, years ago — cumulated this fall on Oct. 8, when more than 700 competitors from throughout the country ran in their choice of a full course marathon, half marathon, 10K marathon or 5K marathon.
Organizers from the James Family Prescott YMCA hosted the 44th annual event. It is known nationally as “one of the toughest foot races in the United States.”
Winners were: Full-Marathon Male
Overall Winner, Adam Folts, 3:06:17; Full-Marathon Female Overall Winner, Leah Triller, 4:07:19; Half-Marathon Male Overall Winner, Dan Kuch, 1:18:20; Half-Marathon Female Overall Winner, Jessica Clark, 1:36:27; 10K Male Overall Winner, David Valdez, 37:12; 10K Female Overall Winner, Kiera Woodman, 37:57; 5K Male Overall Winner, Blake Duggan, 19:34; and 5K Female Overall Winner, Libbie Jorgensen, 21:32.
Racing preparation began well before the starting gun. Racers
spent most of the day before picking their race packets and other necessary items at the James Family Prescott YMCA at 750 Whipple St. They gathered swag bags and advice from race sponsors and those who claimed to know the course best. All runners claimed a commemorative T-shirt.
The story is that many runners complete in the prestigious event so afterward they can step back and boast to their friends, “I was tough enough.”

The Arizona Philharmonic (AZ Phil) opened its fifth season of bringing top-notch classical musical performances to Prescott with the diverse programming of “Dancing from Tonga to Vienna” at the Yavapai College Performing Arts Center. Dominick Argento’s entertaining “Royal Invitation: Homage to the Queen of Tonga” was inspired by Queen Sālote of Tonga’s appearance at the 1953 coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. Pianist Thomas Pandolfi then joined the orchestra for Mendelssohn’s Piano Concerto No. 1 and the night concluded with the most high-spirited of Beethoven symphonies, the joyous Symphony No. 7.
