Trail for the Ages PEAVINE IS A
The Peavine Trail is a tentpole of the City of Prescott’s Mile High Trail System, attracting some 70,000 visitors annually. It’s no wonder why.
Its wide, flat base is a former railroad bed that draws families (if you have a dog, bring him or her, too) and trios or quartets of friends to explore the path together. It’s rated “easy” by most sources and is designated for wheelchair users, along with hikers, runners, cyclists and horseback riders.
Its 6-mile one-way length makes a respectable workout for everyone, and it’s easy to double back anywhere you like, as there are parking lots at the north and south ends.
The Peavine’s impressive full name is the Prescott Peavine National Recreation Trail, and it draws tourists as much as locals with its slideshow of natural beauty.
From its main entrance off of Sundog Ranch Road, it unfolds past the dense beauty of Watson Woods and an entrance to the Discovery Trail, where you can study this area in depth. Then you get your first look at Watson Lake with the marshes at its southern end, which helped both Watson and Willow lakes to be designated as “Important Bird
Areas” by the Audubon Society.
From there you move north into the Dells themselves, the majesty of the tan and pink granite walls dwarfing hikers and riders as they pass on the trail. You do get additional peeks at the lake, especially at one kayak-frequented cove reaching to the base of the trail.
A bit more than 3 miles in you pass the Point of Rocks and come to the head of the Iron King Trail, another “rails to trails” path extending 4 miles east past Glassford Hill to its namesake road in Prescott Valley.
This is about where the Peavine exits the Granite Dells and continues onto flatter grasslands, a quieter section that rewa rds with stunning views of Granite Mountain and other peaks.
After 1.8 miles the trail meets the northern parking lot, which is free. The final leg of the Peavine continues for yet another mile after that via an underpass at 89A, traveling along the east edge of Prescott Regional Airport almost to the runway.
This beloved trail has been a path to healthy living for many in Greater Prescott, beckoning those of all ages and abilities to find their way to wellness.
Prescott Peavine National Recreation Trail
The Peavine Trail starts at its south trailhead, which is reached from Prescott Lakes Parkway’s roundabout intersection with Sundog Ranch Road, just north of the Yavapai Humane Society campus. Turn north on Sundog Ranch and the trailhead will be on your left. The north parking lot is just more than 5 miles to the north near Granite Dells Parkway and State Route 89A. Exit south onto Granite Dells Parkway, take the first right (west) turn onto Centerpointe East Drive, then turn right (north) onto Side Road. The lot is at the end of Side Road on your right (east).
Parking fees: $3 at the south trailhead, none at the northern parking lot Usages: Hiking, cycling, horseback
Mileage: 6 miles (one way)
Level of difficulty: Moderate
Elevation: 5,160 feet to 5,220 feet

12th Annual Boot Drop Rings in 2023
At the strokes of 10 p.m. (for families and early birds) and midnight (for more latenight partiers) Jan. 31, thousands cheered on 2023 during the 12th annual Boot Drop on Whiskey Row in downtown Prescott.
The free event highlighted a 6-foot illuminated cowboy boot being lowered from a 40-foot flagpole from a top the historic Palace building. Fireworks boomed for both countdowns. The earlier drop occurred simultaneously with the traditional Ball Drop in New York City.
The boot was lifted to the Palace building’s roof by crane early one morning around the last week in December.
“It’s really the only way to get it up there,” said Matt Brassard, co-owner of M&M Entertainment & Productions. “We have a new pulley system that’s quite sophisticated, but maybe someday it will be even more advanced.”
Brassard and his many volunteers handled all the numerous event details
from infrastructure to entertainment to vendors, as well as being on the roof for the actual countdowns.
He said his crew was excited to have had a new stage to try out this year and “grateful to Prescott ProSound for handling the sound production for the music, video and live streaming every year.”
Prescott’s New Year’s Eve party was hosted by local performer and singer Candace Devine and Marco Espitia, co-owner of M&M Entertainment & Productions. The evening included street vendors, carnival games, rides and prizes given away throughout the night.
The Pickup Lines performed throughout the festivities.
The event was presented by Desert Financial Credit Union, Experience Prescott Office of Tourism, and Prescott Outpatient Surgical Center.

Jim Carlisto and James Carlisto Jr., a father and son team, have acquired Raskin’s Jewelers, a third-generation family-owned, local jewelry company established in 1946.
The Carlisto family believe in keeping the integrity of the Raskin’s name and intend to hold the same high level of service. “My son and I have built our success on the understanding that the transaction is secondary to the relationship. We are both excited to meet past, current and future clients of Raskin’s Jewelers.”
Raskin’s Jewelers will continue to focus on the services that Prescott residents have come to know. In addition to jewelry sales and repairs, they will resume the sales of awards, trophies, and engravings. Raskin’s Jewelers will also continue to be buyers of precious metals and diamonds. “We understand the importance of integrity, longevity, and tradition. Our family is honored to carry on the legacy and we are dedicated to being respected business owners in the community.”

At the close of 2022 the Quad Cities housing market remained enviably healthy, according to the housing report released today by the Prescott Area Association of REALTORS® (PAAR).
Some homeowners may see the 15.8% drop in total sales from 2021 to 2022 as a cause for concern, but it is rarely that simple. Months of inventory, a major indicator of a healthy housing market, grew from 0.9 months at the end of 2021 to 3.4 months by the close of 2022. Though the numbers indicate that it is still a seller’s market, the gradual increase in available listings may point toward more choice for buyers and improved negotiating power.
Additionally, the median sales price of $417,500 for all regions in 2021 continued to grow. At the end of 2022, the data showed a record
high of $450,000 as the median sales price across all areas. Property owners can expect to hold on to the equity and value that was gained in the last 12 months.
Dr. Lawrence Yun, Chief Economist for the National Association of REALTORS® voiced concerns in the past about the national housing shortage and its connection to rising home prices. Dr. Yun will be providing members of PAAR with a live forecast for the coming year later this month.
“REALTORS® take great pride in researching and preparing for whatever our clients may need based on current market conditions,” said M. Faye Humphrey, 2023 PAAR President.
“The Quad Cities’ real estate market seems to be welcoming more competition,” Humphrey added, “but it’s nothing a licensed, welltrained REALTOR® can’t handle.
You’ll want to seek out an agent with experience who has navigated this type of market before.”
Overall, the data points to another year of robust housing transactions for residents, which is something we can all get behind.
The detailed reports are available here: https://dashboards. domusanalytics.com/v/ PrescottInfographic and https:// dashboards.domusanalytics. com/v/PrescottInfographicArea.
Editor’s Note: All data is compiled from the Multiple Listing Service of the Prescott Area Association of REALTORS®and includes single-family, manufactured, mobile, modular, condos, and townhouse residential activity in Prescott, Prescott Valley, Chino Valley, and Dewey-Humboldt.

The Perfect Retaining Wall System
VERSA-LOK retaining wall systems are cost-effective, easy-to-install, and give you endless design options.

German Style Christmas Market Debuts in Prescott
Old World Europe and historic Prescott forged a new tradition in 2022, adding to the reason Prescott’s called Arizona’s Christmas City.
A German Christmas Village and Christkindlmarket on Goodwin Street Dec. 16 through Dec. 18 offered stalls filled with Germanstyle food, candles, honey, jewelry and more.
Majestic Clydesdales offered carriage rides around the Yavapai County Courthouse, and kid-sized rides, activities and visits with St. Nicholas mingled with the rest of the festive offerings.
The market was alive with stage and roaming performers and, of course, a Bier Garten with beer and hot mulled wine.
Capturing the imagination of adults and the hearts of children were Kinder Lantern Parades, storytelling by Santa and Christkind — this fairy-like creature dressed in gold and white robes watched over the Christkindlmarket.
Folklore reaches back to the 1500s when a “grand” angel guided people through the holiday season. Christkind helps Santa out by hearing the wishes of children and bearing gifts to most children in Germanspeaking countries on Dec. 24.
The market was made possible through a grant from Experience Prescott Office of Tourism and sponsorships for various activities, including Desert Financial Credit Union and Hensley Beverage Company.

‘70s Star Tony Orlando Sung in the New Year
College Performing Arts CenterYavapai College Performing Arts Center, in cooperation with U.S. Vets/ Prescott, presented pop artist Tony Orlando in a Jan. 13 fundraiser.
U.S. Vets/Prescott provides housing, workforce development resources and support for more than 500 local veterans.
With two platinum albums, three gold albums, and 15 Top 40 hits, one of America’s most endearing and enduring stars sung his amazing repertoire of pop music treasures.
A child of Hell’s Kitchen, Orlando began his career singing doo-wop on New York City street corners. His infectious charm and talent for composition soon led him through the heart of pop’s ‘60’s renaissance and its
legendary performers.
Rock producer Don Kirschner hired him as a songwriter, where he shared Brill Building offices with the likes of Carole King, Neil Sedaka, Bobby Darin and Simon and Garfunkel.
Orlando was already a successful music executive in the late ‘60s, when he agreed to sing lead on a song called Candida. The song became an international hit in 1970, and Tony Orlando, with his backup group Dawn, began an incredible run that included Top 40 hits like "Knock Three Times, He Don’t Love You", and 1973’s song of the year, "Tie a Yellow Ribbon (Round the Ole Oak Tree").
The group’s engaging on-stage chemistry led CBS to create "The
Tony Orlando & Dawn Show", which anchored Wednesday nights on the network from 1974 to 1976.
With a generous spirit that transcends the stage, Orlando has been a frequent champion of worthy causes. He was a longtime performer and host on the "Jerry Lewis’ Muscular Dystrophy Association Labor Day Telethon".
As Yellow Ribbon became an icon for U.S. soldiers fighting and serving worldwide, Orlando took up their cause, as well. He serves on the board of directors for the Eisenhower Foundation, and is the honorary chair of the Snowball Express, helping the children of fallen soldiers.
