We all know about the bandits and the bad boys, the gunfighters and goons, but not the women who held it all together with grit and spit. The reality is plain: there never would have been a settled West without the women – Native and Mexican women here first; Black and White women who followed – all bravely staking their lives in these unknown badlands. But they’ve never gotten their due.

“The Gentleman Doc Holliday”
Wyatt Earp, Presenter
(Great Grand-Nephew of Wyatt Earp)
This one-man play features Wyatt Earp (great grand-nephew of Wyatt Earp) as Doc Holliday.
Earp tells the story of the West’s most famous dentist and his journey from one who heals to one who kills. The setting is in a Denver, Colorado jail cell, where Bat Masterson and Governor Frederick W. Pitkin have put Doc in protective custody for a few hours. This is after Doc and the Earps have left Arizona for Colorado.
Unfortunately for Doc, a few hours have turned into a few days. To say the least, Doc is not very happy about this. He is angry with the jailor, who is ignoring his needs. Out of boredom and frustration, Doc begins bantering with the other prisoners. You, the audience are the other prisoners.

Keegan Swenson, Sofia Gomez Villafane Take Double Wins in Whiskey Off-Road
The 18th edition of the Whiskey Off-Road in Prescott — April 28, 29 and 30 — was another one for the record books.

For pro mountain bike racers, $2,000 in cash prizes were up for the taking with the El Yucateco Hot Sauce Fat Tire Crit in downtown Prescott on Friday evening. Saturday saw amateur racers tackling the 30 Proof and 50 Proof courses, and for the day’s main entertainment over 5,000 tickets were registered for the evening’s free community concerts on the Courthouse square.
On Sunday, pro racers gave it their all on the 50-mile backcountry course where a cash purse of $30,000 was on the line for the pro men and women.
An impressive display of fitness and skill saw Keegan Swenson of Santa Cruz, California, and Sofia Gomez Villafane of Heber City, Utah, winning both the Fat Tire Crit and backcountry races.

In the middle of the morning sometime, probably around breakfast time, in the hills of Guanajuato Mexico, on Dec. 4, 1989, was born one Juve Rodriguez, and he was hungry for breakfast!
As a baby he screamed for shrimp and grits on Sunday, he would drive his father crazy for lemon ricotta pancakes on Wednesday, forget about Thursdays and Friday —they were the hardest — because little Juve wanted coconut French toast, Churro French
by Leon Moise, Salt & Pepper
toast, and cannoli French toast!
He would scream, “El desayuno es lo mas rico del dia.”! (Breakfast is the best part of the day.)
One day Mama Rodriguez said, “Mijo pass the salt and pepper.” Little Juve responded “Si Mama,” and it was born. Juve Rodriguez would open Salt & Pepper, Prescott’s hottest breakfast establishment filled with all his favorite breakfast dishes.
All joking aside, a breakfast establishment is something Juve always wanted to open,
Mimosa Flights
Salt & Pepper’s flights come with four mimosas flavors: Orange, Guava, Mango and Prickly Pear.
Try our screwdrivers with fresh squeezed orange juice, our S&P Bloody Mary and our single mimosas with your favorite flavor.
and now it’s a reality.
He has combined a flavorful menu with a friendly atmosphere. With amazing dishes like huevos rancheros or the amazing maple siracha bacon, you will be amazed at the flavor profiles. Get ready for a mimosa flight to include prickly pear, guava, mango and orange. You will not be disappointed with a to-die-for bloody mary.
Get ready for your mouth to spin sideways at Salt and Pepper, Prescott’s newest breakfast addition.

Prescott PULSE
For a relatively small community Greater Prescott has an astoundingly vibrant music scene. You can hear live music pouring out of bars, saloons, breweries, clubs, coffeehouses, restaurants, concert halls, parks, galleries and anywhere else a crowd might form. Every month we’re putting a different local act in the spotlight.
PRESCOTT PULSE: BAND SPOTLIGHT
Prescott Now: How long have you guys been playing together?
Well Dressed Wolves: We formed the band in June 2004. June 2023 will mark 19 years.
Prescott Now: What genre or genres of music do you play?
Well Dressed Wolves: We are a rock band, and we definitely favor rock-related genres not only as a band but individually as music lovers. When we formed, our immediate common ground were bands like The Who, Cream, Oasis and The Beatles, but at the same time, we all loved bands like Foo Fighters, The Strokes and White Stripes.
We were both intrigued not only by classic artists, but of what was happening at the present date. Listening to the sheer power of an album like Live at Leeds by The Who, the dynamic push of pull between all four members, the intensity, it shook us.
At the same time, we were listening to albums like Aha Shake Heartbreak by Kings of Leon or Is This It? by The Strokes, and totally fanboying over that music.
We knew we wanted to take the styles of the ‘60s and ‘70s and mesh it with more current rock energy volume and power.
Prescott Now: What is the key to being a successful musical act in Prescott and Northern Arizona?
Well D ressed Wolves: We formed out of the Verde Valley, Camp Verde/Cottonwood areas, and we came up out of the small local scene from there and just said “Yes” to a lot of show opportunities.
It always made sense to us that the more we played out, the more we got our name out and slowly, bit by bit, we built a little following, made friends with local artists (friends we’re grateful to have to this day) who helped us out on our journey.
Our life blood as a band is being on stage, feedback in tow, ready to play to as many people as possible. I credit our current status as a band mainly to our reputation as a live band, and the fact that we play a lot of shows.
Prescott Now: What’s the smallest audience you’ve played for; the biggest?
Well D ressed Wolves: Back in 2012, we got a gig out in Black Canyon City, playing for a taco truck, and six patrons more enthralled with their carne asada tacos than our rendition of "People Are Strange" by The Doors. Little did we know the owner of the taco truck was dear friends with the owners of the Buffalo Chip in Sturgis, S.D.
After playing a near four-hour show to two to six people and getting paid in tacos, we were a little skeptical of this man and his “connections.”
Less than a week later, I got a phone call and it was that owner of the taco truck saying he was on the phone with the Buffalo Chip. Less than a year after playing to a few people in Black Canyon City, we were on a stage at the Buffalo Chip in Sturgis, playing to a crowd upward of 1,000.
I think objectively the biggest crowd we played to was in June 2022 when we played the Prescott Square in front of the Courthouse. I think it was 2,000plus people. Insane!
PRESCOTT PULSE: BAND SPOTLIGHT
Prescott Now: What brought you to Prescott?
Well D ressed Wolves: Our history with Prescott goes back to 2011. The first place to open their doors to us was the original Bird Cage Saloon. Since, we built a “home away from home” in Prescott.
The Prescott music scene immediately welcomed us in with open arms. To this day, more so now than ever, it’s a rich and beautiful community of artists with an uncontainable amount of talent.
The town has a vibe that is totally its own.
Our life blood as a band is being on stage, feedback in tow, ready to play to as many people as possible.

Heavenly Views THUMB BUTTE TRAIL POINTS TO
by Blake Herzog
At 6,440 feet, Thumb Butte is a not-to-be-missed Prescott landmark, presiding over its bustling historic downtown as a friendly reminder of nature’s domain over the area.
It beckons to hikers and runners alike, and Prescott National Forest’s Trail No. 33 takes them to just 20 feet below its craggy peak.
It’s one of the most popular hikes in the forest, drawing families and enthusiasts of all ages, though mountain biking is prohibited. It provides a relatively steep higher-elevation climb, giving everyone a decent workout as they ascend from ponderosas to alligator junipers and prickly pears that bloom in spring.
It’s a loop trail, so users have a choice at the trailhead about how they get to the top. The U.S. Forest Service’s recommended route is to begin by taking the path on the right, a well-maintained paved or dirt trail that travels an easier slope and offers benches and other nature viewing opportunities; then taking the steeper paved portion back down.
Many hardy hikers choose to ascend via the steeper route for a stronger cardio challenge up the mountain with quite a
few switchbacks, which works great for anyone who has decent lung capacity. The pavement can get slippery in winter, so spring and summer are the perfect times to experience the wonders of Thumb Butte.
These include the close-up view of the mountain’s defining butte, which is actually more of a jumble of boulders. Just to the south of it (on the paved side) is the incredible viewshed where you can see Prescott below and Granite and Mingus mountains, the Bradshaw Mountains and, if you’re lucky, the San Francisco Peaks by Flagstaff.
Trail No. 314 branches off near the halfway point of the loop, adding a half-mile of even more breathtaking views and connecting to Trail No. 326, which is part of the broader network of trails around Thumb Butte.
Benches and educational plaques about terrain and wildlife dot the unpaved portion of the trail.
Thumb Butte Trail No. 33 usually takes about 1 to 1.5 hours to complete, depending on your fitness and experience level, and is a perfect introduction to Greater Prescott’s outdoor adventures.

THUMB BUTTE TRAIL NO. 33
Thumb Butte Trail No. 33 begins at its trailhead at the main Thumb Butte Recreation Area parking lot, reached by traveling about 3.4 miles west of downtown Prescott on Gurley Street, which becomes Thumb Butte Road before you leave the city. The first of its two parking lots will come up on your right and the No. 33 trailhead is across the street.
The trail’s popularity makes being able to share the path a requirement. Above the forested portions there isn’t too much shade available, so prepare yourself accordingly.
Parking fees: $5, free on Wednesdays
Usages: Hiking only
Mileage: 2.1 miles
Level of difficulty: Moderate
Elevation: 5,795 feet to 6,380 feet

Prescott, AZ – May 8, 2023 –Total sales and new listings both declined last month, but the signs of a healthy market are still there according to the housing report released today by the Prescott Area Association of REALTORS® (PAAR).
Total home sales across all of PAAR fell last month to 267, representing a 25.8% decline since April 2022. It is important to note, however, that the drop in sales coincides with a similar drop in new listings across the same area, which declined by 3.6%, representing only 513 listings added to the local market in April 2023.
The good news is that months of inventory continue to recover across the Quad Cities, rising from only 1.3 months this time last year to 3.5 months last month. "The lack of housing inventory is a major constraint to rising sales," said NAR (National Association
of REALTORS®) Chief Economist Lawrence Yun, in a recent press release. "Limited housing supply is simply not meeting demand nationally."
Positive indicators in the data also seem to support NAR’s predictions that sales in the second half of this year will be “notably better” and existing home prices will mostly stabilize. Median days on the market increased exponentially from April 2022 to April 2023, with the average listing jumping from only seven (7) days on the market to now 29 days (about 4 weeks/one month), signaling a return to a more sustainable pace for homeowners who are considering buying or selling property soon.
“REALTORS® take great pride in knowing the local market inside and out,” said M. Faye Humphrey, 2023 PAAR President. “PAAR members are proud of the contributions we have made to the long-term growth and prosperity of
the place in which we both live and work.”
(To read more about how homeowners in the Prescott area accumulated more than $200,000 in wealth over the last 10 years - $60,000 more than the national average - due to home appreciation, see PAAR’s April 2023 story in our “Latest News” section at www.paar.org/ )
The detailed reports are available here: https://dashboards.domusanalytics. com/v/PrescottInfographic and https://dashboards.domusanalytics. com/v/PrescottInfographicArea
Editor’s Note: All data is compiled from the Multiple Listing Service of the Prescott Area Association of REALTORS®and includes single-family, manufactured, mobile, modular, condos, and townhouse residential activity in Prescott, Prescott Valley, Chino Valley, and Dewey-Humboldt.
104 Prescott NOW Vol. 11, No. 6 LOCAL MARKET OPPORTUNITIES

Journeys in Spirit 2023
Showcases Traditional, Contemporary Native Art
Submitted by ‘Tis Art Center & Gallery and Museum of Indigenous People
Through June 20, the ‘Tis Art Center and Gallery in historic downtown Prescott will present Journeys in Spirit 2023: Traditional and Contemporary Native Art.
Produced in partnership with the Museum of Indigenous People, with additional support from the City of Prescott and the Prescott Area Arts and Humanities Council, this fascinating exhibit showcases the artwork, culture and stories of a diverse group of Native artists.
From the rock paintings and carvings of early ancestors to basketry, bead
working, ceramics and other mediums, art has always played a powerful and integral role in Native cultures.
Today, many traditions continue to be handed down from generation to generation, and children are taught from an early age that color and imagery carry symbolic meaning and that through the arts, stories can be told.
The Native artists of Journeys in Spirit come from varied backgrounds and cultures, with some living within and others living outside of their tribal communities.
The exhibit highlights a range of styles and mediums, from more traditional works to modern mediums such as painting and photography. As they explore the intriguing artwork on display, Journeys in Spirit attendees will gain insight into the lives of the artists and the cultures and stories of their tribes.
The ’Tis Art Center and Gallery is at 105 S. Cortez St. For more information about Journeys in Spirit, visit www.tisartgallery.com/journeysin-spirit-american-indian-art.
