Ponderosa Grove Photos by Blushing Cactus Photography
Prescott-based musical favorites Ponderosa Grove played their final local show of 2023 at the historic Elks Theatre & Performing Arts Center Sept. 29, debuting several new songs they’re now recording for release in 2024. Opening act The Cross-Eyed Possum welcomed the audience with the trio’s jazz-infused bluegrass before Candace Devine, Drew Hall, Cozzy Bohrman, Gregory Gonaway and Zach Dominguez unleashed their vocal and instrumental talent on a blend of rock, country and soul that’s been compared to a “contemporary Fleetwood Mac.” Devine is also the creator of the Pure Imagination Music Festival held at Watson Lake.

PULSE For a relatively small community Greater Prescott has an astoundingly vibrant music scene. You can hear live music pouring out of bars, saloons, breweries, clubs, coffeehouses, restaurants, concert halls, parks, galleries and anywhere else a crowd might form. Every month we’re putting a different local act in the spotlight.
PRESCOTT PULSE: BAND SPOTLIGHT
The CheekTones
Photos by Blushing Cactus Photography
An Interview with Don Cheek Prescott Now: How long have you been playing? Don Cheek: Our first official gig as The CheekTones was Feb 3, 2007 — right there on the patio at Coyote Joe’s, which is now Whiskey River! The only original members are me on guitar and vocals, and Ines (rhymes with Guinness) Vitols, who plays violin. In 2012 we added Drew Hall on lead guitar; in 2021 Cozzy Bohrman took over bass duties; and in ’22, Scott Ellis joined us on drums. It’s a killer lineup — everyone is such a good fit. These kids play well together!
36 Prescott NOW Vol. 11, No. 12
Prescott Now: What genre or genres of music do you play? What about them inspires you? Don Cheek: Always the hardest question — it’s not easy to label what we play. One name for it is “friendly rock and roll.” It’s a mix of classic rock, with a little Americana, a little blues, a little folk and a smidgin of country. We always play some originals and we’re fortunate that so many of our fans know them and sing along. We like to play songs you don’t hear in bars much — obscure cuts by artists you know. We always play some originals that
I’ve written, and we’re fortunate that so many of our fans know them and sing along. Prescott Now: What is the key to being a successful musical act in Prescott and Northern Arizona? Don Cheek: If you’re talking about playing bars and clubs, it’s a good idea to mix in songs people know, songs that get their feet moving and their heart pumping. It’s not complicated. And you have to show up and have fun — folks are out to have a good time, and you set that tone. We’ve been told many times, the thing people like about us is that it
PRESCOTT PULSE: BAND SPOTLIGHT
looks like we’re having fun. ‘Cause we are! Prescott Now: What’s the smallest audience you’ve ever played for, and the biggest? Don Cheek: We played the grand opening of CityScape in Phoenix, back in 2010. We went on right before Third Eye Blind, and the crowd was up to a couple thousand. And we’re told that the crowd for our shows in the Prescott Summer Concert series is around 2,000, but who knows for sure? We once played the 10-12 Lounge in Clarkdale on a Saturday, and
the “crowd” was two kind ladies who drove over from Prescott, and two patrons at the bar. We seldom play to an empty room these days. Prescott Now: Where do you find the inspiration for your songwriting or performances? Don Cheek: It’s clear from a CheekTones’ show that we dig playing for our regular crowd, our fans and friends, and it’s even better when newcomers wander in and just can’t leave. We of course love the music, love the onstage camaraderie, but it’s the connection to the audience, the smiling faces, that keeps us coming back.
Prescott Now: What brought you to Prescott? Don Cheek: I retired here; Cozzy grew up here; Ines came to attend Prescott College and stayed; Scott came from the Valley decades ago, and Drew moved here as a teenager. Prescott is a musical town, with so many venues close together, and we’re booked right here as much as we can do — and it’s all only minutes from home. We’ve been called “Prescott’s House Band” by some. We’re just a hometown band, playing in a place we love.
The CheekTones are scheduled to play at the Whiskey River Tavern on Friday, Dec. 15 from 8-11:30 PM. Check out the band’s website at www.cheektones.com. Vol. 11, No. 12 Prescott NOW 37

The Christkindl Angel returns to host the event, which includes outdoor amusement rides, Christmas music, visits with Santa and Clydesdale horse-drawn wagon rides. The event will be open Friday, Dec. 15 from 4 to 8 p.m.; Saturday, Dec. 16 from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.; and Sunday, Dec.
17 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on west Goodwin Street in downtown Prescott. Admission is free. The 13th annual New Year’s Eve Boot Drop will be Sunday, Dec. 31. Horses with Heart Photos by Daryl Weisser
Horses with Heart presented its fifth annual “Have a Heart” equestrian competition Sept. 30 at Olsen’s Arena in Chino Valley. With barrel racing and pole bending for Pee Wees on up, the day was full of romping horses, courageous cowgirls and the pageantry that accompanies events that celebrate these magnificent animals. All proceeds went to HwH, a nonprofit that helps to transform the lives of disabled children and adults, including military veterans, through therapeutic horsemanship. Their gentle horses help clients obtain confidence, dignity and independence with assistance from highly credentialed staff.

HIKE Salida View Trail #95 Trail etiquette is an important part of keeping our trails fun and safe for all trail users

Map courtesy of U.S. Forest Service
Salida Gulch is a ravine through the Bradshaw Mountain foothills that incorporates high desert prickly pear, riparian willow and walnut trees, mountain ponderosa and views of grassy chaparral hillsides just a few hundred feet of elevation change, plus etchings left by an ancient civilization. All this makes the trail that loops through it one of the most interesting you can find in Greater Prescott. Once you get to the trailhead, it’s a short walk from a large parking lot to an unbridged crossing over Lynx Creek’s bed. If it’s running too fast, you’ll need to try again another day. You can choose to see the petroglyphs early on by going to your left or save them for the end by bearing right, which gives you a heart-pumping ascent and more gradual descent. These rock carvings could be related to the Lynx Lake Ruins, which you likely drove past on your way to the trailhead, a Native American settlement last occupied around the year 1300. The symbols
and figures are remarkably prominent, clustered on a single boulder near the 1-mile mark. As you proceed farther into the gulch, the trail follows the stream bed that formed the ravine, which rarely contains more than a puddle or two, as the vegetation gradually shifts to juniper and manzanita. The pine trees begin to sprout as you approach the trail’s high point after just over 2.5 miles, after the route has doubled back along its narrow loop. Don’t forget to look for your favorite peaks along the way and especially at the top. The horizon extends along the Bradshaw Mountains to Granite Mountain and over to Mingus, and with any luck extends to those vaunted San Francisco Peaks. The final section goes down the gulch’s wall quickly, using a few switchbacks beloved by mountain bikers as they glide back to the entrance. Whichever direction you take, the Salida Gulch Trail gives users a sweeping glimpse of the region’s natural and human history.
SALIDA GULCH TRAIL NO. 95 This is a loop trail you reach from Prescott National Forest’s Salida Connector Trail No. 9263. To get there, take State Route 69 to Walker Road (Costco is at the intersection) and turn south toward Lynx Lake. Continue for 1.2 miles until you see the Lynx Lake Ruin sign and then turn left onto Lynx Creek Road. Go past the day use area and travel just under a mile to the end of the road, bearing right going down the hill until reaching a large lot with parking for single vehicles and horse trailers. Go to the trailhead and take No 9263 over Lynx Creek, after which you’ll quickly come to a gate and see Trail No. 95 on the right. Salida Gulch is within the Lynx Lake Recreation Area, with its trailhead about 2 miles northeast of the lake, and hikers (but no bikers or horses) can go down to the lake by taking Johns Tank Trail No. 94, which branches off near southernmost end of the loop and goes for 1 hilly mile until reaching the shore. Parking fees: None Uses: Hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding Distance: 4.2 miles Level of difficulty: Moderate Elevation: 5,350 feet to 5,770 feet

LOCAL MARKET OPPORTUNITIES
Quad Cities Housing Inventory Continues to Expand The median price of a home sold in the Quad Cities area increased nearly 2% in October to $489,000, according to the Multiple Listing Service of the Prescott Area Association of REALTORS® (PAAR). A total of 264 sales closed during the month, while 943 homes remained actively available for purchase. Chino Valley reported the largest percentage in sales growth in the area. Thirty homes closed in October, up four from the same month in 2022. Meanwhile, the median sales price dipped 2.6% to $396,500, and 32 new listings came on the market. Both Prescott and Prescott Valley experienced fewer sales this year over last year, with Prescott reporting 127 closed sales and Prescott Valley ending the month with 88 sales completed. However, inventory in both towns
106 Prescott NOW Vol. 11, No. 12
increased from last year, with 3.9 months available in Prescott and 2.9 months in Prescott Valley. While Prescott maintained the highest median sold price in the Quad Cities with $592,500 in October, Prescott Valley remained the second highest, posting a 3.8% year-over-increase last month for a median price of $454,950. Dewey-Humboldt saw the largest percentage growth in new listings, doubling from last year’s 28 to this year’s 42 newly available properties for sale. However, sales in the area dropped from 29 last year to 19 this year. “Inventory continues to loosen, but it is still very much a sellers’ market,” said Faye Humphrey, PAAR’s 2023 President. “It’s important to get pre-qualified, find a REALTOR® that knows the local area, and be ready
to hit the ground running. Also, know your priorities in a home so you can stay focused and find that property that meets your needs.” Since January, there have been 2,562 homes sold in the Quad Cities with a median sales price of $488,868. The detailed reports are available here: https://dashboards. domusanalytics.com/v/ PrescottInfographic and https:// dashboards.domusanalytics. com/v/PrescottInfographicArea Editor’s Note: All data is compiled from the Multiple Listing Service of the Prescott Area Association of REALTORS®and includes single-family, manufactured, mobile, modular, condos, and townhouse residential activity in Prescott, Prescott Valley, Chino Valley, and Dewey-Humboldt.
