Pink Martini Took Audience on Musical World Tour

Photo courtesy of Jim & Linda Lee Performing Arts Center

submitted by Jim & Linda Lee Performing Arts Center Audience favorite Pink Martini and longtime lead singer China Forbes brought their infectious, eclectic sounds back to the Jim & Linda Lee Performing Arts Center in December. With vintage jazz, classical and old-fashioned pop vibes — and cultivating inspiration from musical genres from all over the world — Pink Martini created a unique sound strictly their own. The 12-member orchestral ensemble, bandleader/pianist Thomas Lauderdale and Forbes took the audience on a musical trip around the world Dec. 14, from a samba parade in Rio to a French nightclub. Thomas Lauderdale founded

28 Prescott NOW Vol. 12, No. 1

Pink Martini in 1994 to provide beautiful and inclusive musical soundtracks for political fundraisers for such causes as civil rights, affordable housing, the environment, libraries, public broadcasting, education and parks. A year later, he asked his former Harvard classmate, singer Forbes, to join the ensemble. They began to write songs together, and their first song, Sympathique (Je ne veux pas travailler), became an overnight sensation in France and to this day remains a mantra (“Je ne veux pas travailler” means “I don’t want to work”) for striking French workers. With a repertoire that includes

songs in 25 languages, Pink Martini performs on concert stages on six continents. Pink Martini has released 11 studio albums on its own independent label, Heinz Records (named after Lauderdale’s dog), selling over 3 million albums worldwide. The Jim & Linda Lee Performing Arts Center ticket office is on Yavapai College’s Prescott Campus, 1100 E. Sheldon St. and open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesdays and Wednesdays; 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays; and one hour prior to performances. PULSE For a relatively small community Greater Prescott has an astoundingly vibrant music scene. You can hear live music pouring out of bars, saloons, breweries, clubs, coffeehouses, restaurants, concert halls, parks, galleries and anywhere else a crowd might form. Every month we’re putting a different local act in the spotlight.

PRESCOTT PULSE: BAND SPOTLIGHT

Mark Aragon: bass, Gavin Giesecke: drums, Tall Paul Epoch: harmonica/flute/vocals, Jamie Faila: saxophone/flute/vocals

Scott Marshall and the Free Radicals Prescott Now: How long have you been playing? Scott Marshall: The band has been together since 2015 when I returned to the area and reunited with my friend and drummer Gavin Giezecke. We had a very popular band here that was booked solid from 1996 to 2000 called Grandma’s Rooster then changed to Marshall Law. I left the area for 15 years and played all over the country; Las Vegas, Chicago, L.A., San Diego, Michigan and even the Philippines for a year where my wife and I own a 140-acre working coconut farm.

36 Prescott NOW Vol. 12, No. 1

Prescott Now: What genre or genres of music do you play? Scott Marshall: I like to play guitar based on classic rock I grew up with in the ‘70s and the blues the most. Prescott Now: What’s the smallest audience you’ve ever played for, and the biggest? Scott Marshall: I have opened for The Marshall Tucker Band, BTO, The Buckinghams, The Spinners, Johnny Winter and Chicago blues legends Buddy Guy, Lonnie Brooks, Coco Taylor and Sugar Blue with my band Frankie and the White Boys in Chicago.

These were summer festivals with over 5,000 people. I have also played to very small crowds at times but still like to play them with the same intensity as the big shows. Prescott Now: What is the key to being a successful musical act in Prescott and Northern Arizona? Scott Marshall: I think the key to the success of The Free Radicals is our wide range of material and the great connection all five members have on stage. We have over 150 songs in our repertoire and can find the right music for almost any crowd. Even if we haven’t played them for a while, we always seem to nail it live.

PRESCOTT PULSE: BAND SPOTLIGHT

Photos by Laurie McCampbell

Also, the blend of guitar, harmonica, sax and flute gives us a unique sound that few bands can offer along with three vocalists. We also have a female vocalist who joins us for weddings, country clubs, etc., and a rock solid rhythm section. Prescott Now: What brought you to Prescott? Scott Marshall: What brought me back to Prescott is it feels more like the America I grew up with where a sense of community is strong and the people are nicer in general including the staff at Whiskey River Tavern. Friendly, helpful and hospitable. Vol. 12, No. 1 Prescott NOW 37

LOCAL MARKET OPPORTUNITIES

Median Sale Prices for Homes Remain Stable in November Home selling prices in the Quad Cities remained stable in November with an overall median sales price of $465,000, the same as this time last year, according to the housing market report released by the Prescott Area Association of REALTORS® (PAAR). Chino Valley saw the smallest change with only a 1.9% increase in the median sales price since 2022, while Dewey-Humboldt and Prescott Valley experienced rises of 6.6% and 6.5%, respectively. The Quad Cities reported a total of 195 sales in November. Inventory continues to increase in the region as new listings are put on the market. Chino Valley experienced the most extensive growth with a 68.4% increase in new listings this November compared to last. Prescott and Prescott Valley have also seen an influx of new listings, with Prescott experiencing a 19.5% increase and Prescott Valley a 3.6% increase. The amount of inventory that remains active has grown in each of the Quad Cities, with 936 active listings in November compared to 819 at this time last year. Both Prescott and Prescott Valley experienced a decrease in the median days on market, while Chino Valley and DeweyHumboldt showed slight increases at 1.6% and 5.8%, respectively. Prescott’s median days on market dropped from 42 days in November of 2022 to 29 days this November. This figure changed similarly in Prescott Valley, with the days on market decreasing from 43 to 30

50 Prescott NOW Vol. 12, No. 1

from November last year to this year. As the overall median days of market for the Quad Cities decreased, months of inventory increased 50% year-over-year. Inventory sits at 4.8 months. There were increases in each of the Quad Cities aside from Dewey-Humboldt. “The market still favors sellers, however there are still opportunities for buyers in the Quad Cities as the number of new listings has increased and overall housing availability improves,” said Faye Humphrey, PAAR’s 2023 president. “We anticipate the market will remain competitive, but enthusiasm

over newly available homes paired with the guidance of an experienced REALTOR® can keep buyers in the game.” There were 936 homes listed for sale in the Quad Cities at the end of November, a 14.3% increase from the November 2022 total of 819. Editor’s Note: All data is compiled from the Multiple Listing Service of the Prescott Area Association of REALTORS®and includes single-family, manufactured, mobile, modular, condos, and townhouse residential activity in Prescott, Prescott Valley, Chino Valley, and Dewey-Humboldt.

FESTIVAL OF TREES

Festival of Trees Continues to be Big Hit

submitted by StarStruck Event Planning

The 6th annual Festival of Trees Prescott was the biggest year to date! We successfully kicked off the holiday season in Arizona’s Christmas City. We are still receiving feedback from the community that the festival is quickly becoming their favorite holiday event of the year. Attendees mingled in the forest of beautifully decorated trees and wreaths. People bought trees and wreaths to place in their home or business and voted on their favorites. Activities included visits with Santa, drinking cocoa, enjoying the holiday bar and taking photos at a selfie station. Kids participated in making ornaments, face painting and balloon twisting. There were live

performances throughout the week. More than 2,800 people attended the event, and all the trees and wreaths sold. Each year Festival of Trees Prescott chooses a local nonprofit organization to receive the net proceeds from the event. Yavapai CASA for Kids Foundation received $21,000. INSPIRING THE COMMUNITY

Take the 1000 Books Before Kindergarten challenge! Visit the Youth Desk to sign up and collect your 1000 Books Before Kindergarten welcome packet. Then, keep track of the books you read with your child by putting stickers on paper reading logs or by using the library’s free Beanstack app.

1000 Books Before Kindergarten Whether presenting storytimes for babies, toddlers and preschool aged children, curating a comprehensive collection of books for checkout, or supplying area book nooks with free children’s materials, Youth Services librarians are dedicated to supporting the growth and early literacy development of children in our community. Prescott Public Library is proud to announce a new program for families with young children: the 1000 Books Before Kindergarten reading challenge! 1000 Books Before Kindergarten is a nationwide effort to encourage

in the know

parents and caregivers to share the joy of reading with young children, with a goal of each child hearing 1000 books read aloud before they enter kindergarten. One thousand books may sound overwhelming but is actually quite achievable. If a child hears just one bedtime story read aloud each night, that child will have read 1000 books in less than three years. Imagine the child also regularly attends one of the library’s weekly storytimes, where librarians read aloud two or more books and share songs, rhymes, and fingerplays. The child will reach the 1000 book

milestone even sooner! The 1000 Books challenge is not a race to the finish. Rather, it is a program designed to immerse children in books and positive reading experiences, which research shows helps them build language and literacy skills, develop a strong foundation for academic success, and inspires a lifelong love of reading. One Landmark

LEADS TO OTHERS ON BADGER MOUNTAIN

Many an Arizona town have branded a nearby hill as its own by painting its first initial on its side. Prescott’s own “P” sits about 2 miles east of downtown on a peak officially known as Badger Mountain just below the KYCA radio tower, where it’s stood sentry over the city for decades. Both landmark letters and transmission towers are put in places where they can be easily seen from a large area, so it makes sense that a trail on P Mountain would offer beautiful views of the surrounding Sierra Prieta and Bradshaw ranges and out to Prescott Valley and beyond. It’s also an important connector within the area’s network of trails, the final link constructed for the 56-mile Prescott Circle Trail, made up of segments of City of Prescott and Prescott National Forest. The City-maintained Badger Mountain Trail starts on the south side of State Highway 69, across from the end of the Sundog Trail in the rugged chaparral between Prescott Gateway Mall and the Frontier Village shopping center. Zigzagging southeast along the side of the foothills, it meets its only adjacent parking lot in just over 4 miles, when the TurleyBadger connector trail comes in from the west from a dirt lot hidden behind a subdivision.

This is how most hikers enter the trail, turning to the right toward the “P” for more elevation gain, varied vegetation and the dramatic views. It’s also popular with mountain bikers, who use it as a less-difficult alternative to the nearby Boy Scout and Turley trails. This segment continues the jagged path of switchbacks around the mountain. It starts out with stunningly clear views of Granite Mountain and Thumb Butte, as well as the Granite Dells. Go just a little farther and you’ll be able to see Prescott Valley with the San Francisco Peaks (outside Flagstaff) on the far horizon. Then, about a mile past the trailhead you’ll see the landscape change to transitional oak and pine vegetation, offering more shade and variety to your uphill path. Your viewsheds turn into a slideshow of valleys, ravines and piney peaks as you continue toward the City’s border with the national forest. It’s not much farther to the top of the mountain, near the “P” and the radio towers, and the best views of all. From there it’s about a mile downward to where the trail ends at Ranch Trail No. 62, where you can continue toward the Lynx Lake Recreation Area if you wish.

BADGER MOUNTAIN TRAIL To reach the parking lot near the midpoint of the trail, head east from downtown on Gurley Street and turn right onto Overland Road, which is just before the Highway 69/89 interchange. Continue on Overland until you reach the stop sign at Butterfield Road. Turn left and go to the junction of Wagonwheel and Wells Fargo roads. Bear right and continue on Wells Fargo for one-fifth of a mile until the signed turnoff for the Turley Trail. The narrow dirt road reaches the parking lot after a short distance. Parking fees: None Uses: Hiking, mountain biking Distance: 6.77 miles Level of difficulty: Moderate Elevation: 5,510 feet to 6,308 feet
