PULSE For a relatively small community Greater Prescott has an astoundingly vibrant music scene. You can hear live music pouring out of bars, saloons, breweries, clubs, coffeehouses, restaurants, concert halls, parks, galleries and anywhere else a crowd might form. Every month we’re putting a different local act in the spotlight.
PRESCOTT PULSE: BAND SPOTLIGHT
Wheelhouse Prescott NOW: How long have you been playing? Wheelhouse: Some of us have been performing together for the past 10 years or so. Nick Guzzo, guitar and vocals, has lived in Prescott for the past 40 years and has played in a host of bands. His lead playing prowess is eclipsed only by his love for people and his sense of humor. Becky Ryniak, lead vocalist (and cowbell player) has lived in Prescott for the past 27 years. She began singing at age 5. She

has performed locally with rock/ country/blues bands, duos, trios and worship bands. Greg Paul, guitar, keys, and vocals, hails from New York City, having been a professional singer and musician for many years. He is also a local radio personality and movie producer, active in the arts and entertainment industry in Arizona. Gary VanSlyke, bass and vocals, has been playing bass and singing with multiple groups since the ‘70s, along with 12 years on the road as a touring and studio musician.
John Warmouth (the newest member), drummer, has been playing since 1967. His musical journey began with hits of the day to progressive rock, hard rock and blues. Prescott NOW: What genre of music do you play? Wheelhouse: Nick knows almost every lead in the classic rock and roll tunes of the ‘70s and ‘80s. Becky loves classic country and ‘70s rock. And, she toured with a madrigal group her sophomore year of college.
PRESCOTT PULSE: BAND SPOTLIGHT
Greg has headlined at large entertainment venues as well as traveled with a Santana tribute band, to name a few. Gary’s influences stem to his New York roots, Chicago, BST, Tower of Power. John’s influences include Gene Krupa, John Bonham, Philly Joe Jones and Ian Paice. Prescott NOW: What is the key to being a successful musical act in Prescott and Northern Arizona? Wheelhouse: We strive to bring back cherished memories through songs our audiences once loved and bring joy to them as they recall those special times from their past, while they dance and even sing along. Prescott Now: What’s the smallest audience you’ve played for; the biggest? Wheelhouse: Members have individually performed for thousands in stadiums and larger venues. We have
collectively played for small groups, too, such as our local U.S. Veterans family center, as well as resident groups at Touchmark retirement community, car shows, fundraisers, bike rallies, weddings and other celebrations. Prescott NOW: Where do you find inspiration? Wheelhouse: Music is complete healing, on so many levels. Nick concludes that, as many musicians will tell you, there are palatable degrees of dopamine and endorphins that flood our systems when we share the symbiotic connections with our audiences. Prescott NOW: What brought you to Prescott? Wheelhouse: Nick visited from Chicago with his family. They were attracted to its beauty and moderate climate. They relocated the family business; he remains the owner/operator of Anthony’s Restorations on South Montezuma.
Becky, an Arizona native, grew up in Wickenburg and relocated from Scottsdale after a career as a probation officer. She was drawn to Prescott, as a place often visited, to escape the heat and headaches of the big city. Becky and Nick are also longtime Realtors at West USA Realty of Prescott. Greg has family in Prescott and moved here during COVID — NYC’s loss our gain! Gary retired here from the Valley after a lengthy career with the phone company. Prescott’s mild four seasons reminds him of his hometown in central New York. John and his wife moved here from California after learning that Prescott had the small town feel and the many amenities they so enjoy.
Wheelhouse will be at The Windsock Lounge on Feb. 10.

HIKE BALANCING ROCK TRAIL NO. 349 This path is a family-friendly trek near the border of the Granite Mountain Wilderness Area, which takes you from the trailhead on an easy curve through the forest and scrubland. It links to several other trails including Surprise Spring Trail No. 350, which forms a nice, tight loop back to the middle of the trail; West Lake Trail No. 351, a wider loop that takes you back to the Cayuse trailhead; and Granite Mountain Trail No. 261, which hooks onto the end of No. 349 and curls onto the wilderness area and the face of the mountain. The trail is within the Granite Mountain Recreation Area of Prescott National Forest, west of the City. It’s easily accessible from the Cayuse Trailhead, which is reached by taking Iron Springs Road west from its intersection with Willow Creek Road. Continue west for 3 miles until reaching Granite Basin Road, then turn right and continue 2.5 miles until you reach the Cayuse Parking Area on the right, just past the trailhead. HIKE
YEAR-ROUND SHOWCASE
The Balancing Rock Trail on the western edge of Prescott takes hikers, bikers, horses and their riders on a gently rolling journey through the foothills below Granite Mountain, through stands of ponderosa and oak that look majestic whether lushly green in the summer, red and gold in the autumn or dressed in sleeves of snow in the winter. Clearings are dotted with wildflowers in the spring and can host snowball fights in winter. This path at the base of Granite Mountain offers spectacular close-up views of the peak as it curves through a landscape that boasts manzanita, juniper and even some yucca and prickly pear. Boulders loom high and low, with more than one that could be the trail’s namesake. The landmark it was actually named after is near its junction with trail No. 351, a large, rectangular boulder with a smaller, round one on top that seems to be frozen
in mid-slide off the side. As users approach the rock from the south they edge past Surprise Springs, where channels and sandbars direct water running off the mountain, which becomes more of a stream in the winter months. As tempting it can be to wander over there when there’s an inviting cascade of water, much of the area to the east of the trail is private property, so it’s important to stay on the single-track path. The forest begins to thin out on the upper end of the trail and the viewsheds open over the Williamson Valley and on to the Verde Valley and Flagstaff-area peaks. For most adults this trip will not have been particularly challenging, but the last tenth of a mile or so gets a little more difficult as it climbs toward Granite Basin Lake, making for a fitness-building trek as well as a gorgeous one!
Trail etiquette is an important part of keeping our trails fun and safe for all trail users

PRESCOTT NOW Rewind
Acker Night For the 35th year in a row downtown Prescott once again erupted in music at Christmastime to raise money for music scholarships. Acker Night took place Dec. 8 as hundreds of musicians gathered to perform at 120 sites throughout the City’s historic hub, with new additions like the Art Hive adding to longtime locations like Matt’s Saloon, Realty Executives, Fancy That!, the Prescott Chamber of Commerce and multitudes more. Tips given to the musicians and special scarf sales from Fancy That! will create opportunities for 50 local youths to take private lessons and benefit hundreds of others through donations to the music programs of local school districts. More than $45,000 was raised.
