CELEBRATES 137 YEARS WHILE HONORING ‘PRESCOTT TRADITIONS’ THEME
rescott Frontier Days®, Inc is thrilled to announce the much-anticipated 137th annual World’s Oldest Rodeo, taking place from Monday, July 1 to Sunday, July 7 in Prescott, Arizona. This iconic event, held during the bustling Fourth of July week, is a cornerstone of Prescott’s summer calendar, driving economic prosperity throughout the county. Featuring a week-long extravaganza of world-class rodeo action and familyfriendly entertainment, the World’s Oldest Rodeo stands as Prescott’s premier event of the year.
Drawing rodeo enthusiasts from across the globe, Prescott Frontier Days invites attendees to immerse themselves in the rich tapestry of western culture and history dating back to its inaugural celebration on July 4, 1888. This year, the rodeo pays tribute to the deeprooted western culture, embodying the theme of
“Prescott Traditions.” As part of the festivities, the rodeo is launching the Memory Catcher campaign, inviting fans nationwide to share their cherished memories and stories of Prescott rodeo traditions. These stories will be featured on the rodeo’s website and social media platforms, celebrating the enduring legacy of Prescott’s premier event.
Jim Dewey Brown, General Manager of Prescott Frontier Days, Inc., expressed his gratitude for the generations of rodeo families, stating, “It is an honor to highlight their stories and share the profound impact our rodeo has had on their lives over the years.”
The downtown event of the week is the annual rodeo parade, themed “Prescott Traditions,” set to take place on Saturday, July 6 at 9 a.m. in downtown Prescott, sponsored by Barrett Propane. The parade will kick off with the grand marshal honoree, Ibbie Champie. She is the daughter of Lawton Champie, a thirteen-time rodeo champion across various events. Lawton won the All-Around in 1931, 1934 and 1944; calf roping in 1939; steer wrestling in 1931 and 1934; saddle bronc riding in 1924, 1926 and 1931. However, Slim Riley got the credit for winning the bronc riding in 1924 because he got hurt the first day and Lawton was bucked off the first day, so, Lawton filled in for Riley the last three days and won the event. In those days it was all right for someone to ride for another person. Demonstrating true cowboy spirit, they shared the reward money.

Prescott PULSE
For a relatively small community Greater Prescott has an astoundingly vibrant music scene. You can hear live music pouring out of bars, saloons, breweries, clubs, coffeehouses, restaurants, concert halls, parks, galleries and anywhere else a crowd might form. Every month we’re putting a different local act in the spotlight.
Photo by Hannah AustinBilly Bond and Austin Lynn Austin
Between magic, mic nights, a cajon and a Dobro, these two musicians heard each other play. Soon they were playing together, together with other groups and then just back to themselves.
Prescott NOW: How long have you guys been playing together?
Billy: I was at Andrew Deering’s open mic in the Back Alley Wine Bar, and I heard him (Austin) again. This this time he was playing a cajon like I had never heard before. I started booking gigs like a mad man, and we played our first gig together Feb. 15, 2023 at La Planchada. We went on to play 80 shows together in 2023 in various formats.
Austin: Recently, I started writing songs on guitar and singing. So I
hit open mic. It just so happened Billy was playing that night for the first time in a long time. I was super impressed by his set. “Dang… that dude with the cowboy hat can sing,” I thought to myself.
The magical events continued. I was having the hardest time finding someone to play cajon for me so I bought one. I took it to an open mic at BAWB and without asking jumped on a song Ann Marie Schimberg and Darin Mahoney were playing. I had never met them. They then hired me to play with The Palomino Band at Whiskey River Tavern who Billy was also playing dobro for on occasion.
A short time later Billy approached me to jump on some gigs with him, and here we are approaching our 100th show.
Prescott NOW: What genre or genres of music do you play?
Billy: Our music is incredibly diverse. On a given night we will play songs from Hank Williams (Sr.), Amy Winehouse, Johnny Cash, George Strait, The Weeknd and Prince mixed with some original songs.
We joke about never playing a song the same way twice. No click tracks or backing tracks for these boys. It’s just a guitar, a cajon and a voice; but we can make a lotta noise.
Austin: I’m rooted in post punk, classic and alternative rock music, but I love playing the dynamic and character of all kinds of music. Billy has introduced me to all kinds of great songs. Ultimately I
consider him a mentor and close friend. Oh… and we do that music thing together.
Prescott NOW: What is the key to being a successful musical act in Prescott and Northern Arizona?
Billy: Playing music in Prescott is different. In New Mexico, the people would dance to anything with a beat. Here, it seems they want to recognize the song, so we don’t see them dancing to our music much.
We don’t play many songs you’ve heard on the radio, and if we do play one of ‘em, it surely ain’t a way you’ve heard it before. At most shows, we see folks just sitting back and listening. There’s a lot of eye contact. It’s like we’re playing in their living room.
Prescott Now: What’s the smallest audience you’ve played for; the biggest?
Billy: I’ve played for audiences from five to 5,000 people. Austin has played for 10,000+ arena/ festival crowds.
Sometimes the smaller audiences are the toughest ones. You’re eyeball to eyeball, heart to heart, and you have to be absolutely in the moment.
Prescott Now: What brought you to Prescott?
Austin: I spent the early side of the 1990s chasing my musical dreams and took off with a couple bandmates to Europe. We landed in London and signed a record deal with The Cure’s record label (Fiction/Polydor). Highlights of that time were recording with The Cure and playing many of the large, outdoor European music festivals. Life changing events befell one of my bandmates and it all suddenly came to an end. In the mid ‘90s I stopped playing music.
And through a series of magical events I found myself in Prescott. I didn’t realize it was such a musical town.
Billy: I lived in southern Colorado for 50 years. When I was ready to retire, I wanted warmth and sunshine. In 2000, my wife Kathleen and I were driving from Scottsdale to Sedona, thinking Sedona would be the place for us. We stopped for lunch in Prescott and walked around the square, even visited with a few folks. We drove on to Sedona and spent the rest of the day giving it the once over. I’m kind of an old hippy cowboy and thought we’d fit right in. Wrong!!!
On the way back to Scottsdale, we both looked at each other and said, “Prescott is the place to be!” Kathleen went back to Prescott and found a Realtor and a nice piece of land. We bought it, built our home on it and have been here for over 20 years. We love it, love it, love it!

36th Gathering of Cowboy Poets Returns in August
submitted by Helken & Horn Advertising AgencyThe Arizona Cowboy Poets Gathering will again take the stage at the Jim and Linda Lee Yavapai College Performing Arts Center Aug. 8-10. This year’s Gathering features more than 40 cowboy singers, poets and storytellers sharing the heritage and culture of the American cowboy.
Headline performers include Dave Stamey, Mike Dunnand and Kristyn Harris and Hailey Sandoz. This year’s collectible poster — "A Good Way to Get Shot Down" — was created by local artist Steve Atkinson and will be available at the Gathering, as will raffle tickets to win an original framed giclee of the poster.
The Gathering offers free day sessions throughout the campus on Friday and Saturday where attendees can meet and hear the cowboy singers, poets and storytellers.
Dave Stamey has been a cowboy, a mule packer, a dude wrangler. He has been named seven times
as Entertainer of the Year, seven times as Male Performer of the Year and five times as Songwriter of the Year by the International Western Music Association. In November 2016, Stamey was inducted into the Western Music Hall of Fame. He will be on stage Thursday, Aug. 8.
Mike Dunn’s Arizona heritage dates to the 1800s, with memories centered along the east side of the Whetstone Mountains where much of his grandad’s ranch, the Rail “A” brand, remains in the family. His book Somewhere Between Earth and Heaven contains much of his original poetry. The Academy of Western Artist named the book a recipient of the Will Rogers Medallion.
Dunn will appear on stage Friday, Aug. 9.
Kristyn Harris and Hailey Sandoz take center stage Saturday, Aug. 10. Kristyn is the five-time, currently reigning International Western Music

Her recent album, "A Place to Land", was awarded Outstanding Western Album by the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum for 2020.
Hailey is the three-time IWMA Instrumentalist of the Year; she’s known for fiddling, jazzy vocals and arranging skills. A recent graduate of Texas A&M University, Hailey is a sought-after touring musician. At 18, she was hired full-time by GrammyAward Winner Bobby Flores and the Yellow Rose Band.

Journeys in Spirit 2024 Showcases Traditional and Contemporary Native American Art
submitted by ‘Tis Art Center & GalleryThe ‘Tis Art Center & Gallery is proud to present “Journeys in Spirit 2024: Traditional and Contemporary Native Art” in partnership with the Museum of Indigenous People. Journeys in Spirit, which will open on Thursday, May 16 and run through Tuesday, June 25, is a captivating exhibition of Native American art that celebrates the rich cultural heritage and artistic traditions of indigenous communities. Featuring a diverse collection of artworks, including paintings, basketry, jewelry, photography, beadworks, ceramics and other traditional and contemporary mediums, the exhibition
is free and open to the public.
"Journeys in Spirit" showcases the extraordinary talent of Native American artists. These artists come from varied backgrounds and cultures, with some still living within their tribal communities. The exhibition highlights the beauty and diversity of Native American art, while also providing a platform for artists to share their stories and perspectives. Many traditions continue to be passed down through the generations; from an early age, children are taught that color and imagery carry symbolic
meaning and through the arts, their stories can be told.
The public was invited to a reception during Prescott's 4th Friday Art Walk on Friday, May 24, to meet some of the Journeys in Spirit artists and gain deeper insight into their cultures.
‘Tis Art Center & Gallery would like to extend a special thanks to the City of Prescott and the Prescott Area Arts and Humanities Council for their continued support of this event. For more information, please visit www.tisartgallery.com/ category/gallery-events.

IT'S A JUVE THING
Mouthwatering Italian
AT CIAO BELLA
by Leon Moise, Partner, Ciao BellaI don’t know what it is about some people — some do so much, and some do so little. It’s the human condition that has always left me curious and intrigued.
Have you ever met a person who thinks they can do it better, not a better than you, but just better?
Some people have so much pride in what they do that it’s impossible to hide it in the result. I’m honored to see the pride Chef Juve cooks with at Ciao
Bella. There are no shortcuts here.
I’ve watched this chef stretch fresh mozzarella, make sauces from scratch and put out specials every weekend to show his culinary depth. I’m a picky Italian, no offense, it is what it is, but this guy not only passes the test, but he gets the extra credit question right.
It’s been exciting having an Italian restaurant in the Quad Cities that makes me feel at home here. It’s been
our commitment to showcase Juve’s mouthwatering dishes with excellent service, and in the process we have developed some special relationships in this community.
We have been blessed with some of the most amazing customers who have become family. It’s like going over to Mom’s house to eat dinner, sit down and shut up, because there’s pasta in your mouth. Listen!
We’re great; come eat our food!

Cowboy Art
by John Mason Glen, Ph. D., for Western Heritage FoundationAnyone familiar with the West either has been — or will be — captivated by paintings and sculptures of western action. The names of the most famous artists are well-known.
Charlie Russell (1864-1926) was nicknamed “the cowboy artist” as he actually worked on ranches as a cowboy before becoming a professional artist. Celebrated for his
bronze sculptures, he painted over 2,000 works depicting cowboys and Native Americans.
Russell’s oil painting of a group of Piegeon Indians preparing to steal horses from their neighboring Crow tribe recently sold for $5.6 million. My personal favorite is titled "Innocent Allies", depicts three horses tied on a hilltop above where their riders are
robbing a stagecoach.
Frederick Remington (18611909). His works focused on realistic westerners, rather than the landscape that primarily had been the focus.
In 1886, he was sent to Arizona to cover the government’s attempt to put down the Apache insurgency. His images of cavalry and Native Americans are some of his most admired works. Remington traveled to Cuba in 1897 in the employ of the New York Journal to cover the insurrection brewing there.
However, his arrival was premature, giving rise to this exchange when the artist wired publisher W. R. Hearst: “All quiet here, no war, wish to return.” Hearst allegedly replied: “Please remain. You supply the pictures; I’ll supply the war.”
Remington’s sculpture Bronco Buster was presented to Col. Theodore Roosevelt by his Rough Riders in 1898 and another of the statuettes graced the Oval Office for over 50 years until 2020.
George Phippen (1915-1966) was a “local boy who made good.” A selftaught artist who began painting during his tenure with the Civilian Conservation Corps during the Great Depression and throughout WWII, he co-founded and was the first president of the Cowboy Artists of America.
Phippen produced over 3,000 images of cowboys at work, horses and cattle that reflect a close attention to detail and accuracy. His "Cowboy in a Storm" depicts a cowboy who has roped a calf, however the animal has dashed underneath his horse and calf; horse and rider are now entangled in a “storm” indeed.
This bronze sculpture can be seen at the roundabout adjacent to the Phippen Museum on AZ-89 near Granite Dells.
The Western Heritage Center, 156 S. Montezuma St., displays works by cowboy artists, including Phippen and Remington. Admission is free.

LAKESHORE TRAIL HONE YOUR TECHNICAL SKILLS ON
The City of Prescott’s Peavine Trail is the centerpiece of its network of paths — a wide, accessible route along Watson Lake’s shoreline that stuns with its views of the water and the towering cliffs that surround it. It follows a former railway bed. And then there’s the Lakeshore Trail, a singletrack path pasted onto the rocks closer to the water beginning a mile from the Peavine’s
southern gateway, eventually meandering into rocky wilderness deeper in the Granite Dells. The City website describes this as “really a suggested route” rather than a trail because users are free to explore beyond the white dots onto the surrounding granite surfaces.
It beckons to well-versed hikers and mountain bikers with slippery ups and downs that can get their
hearts and lungs pumping, and it recruits every muscle to keep them upright. It’s a test and a treasure for dedicated trekkers, climbers and riders looking to upgrade or maintain their skills.
There are two benches at the Lakeshore Trail’s southern entrance with a sweeping view of the lake that draws you onto the rocks for even more striking vistas over the
LAKESHORE TRAIL
The City of Prescott’s Lakeshore Trail is a side loop beginning about 1 mile north into the Peavine Trail that takes you onto the scenic and slick rocks on the eastern shore of Watson Lake. It has six junctions taking you back to the Peavine, giving you several opportunities to bail if you need to take a break from all of its scrambling and balancing.
It’s a great workout for experienced hikers and bikers familiar with the granite surfaces that make the Dells so unforgettable. It’s popular with both kinds of users, so remember your “share the trail” manners.
calm blue water. Then the dots veer away from the water’s edge into a climb up the rocks to perhaps the best lake-gazing along its 2-mile length, from a higher vantage point rewarding fancy footwork and persistent pedaling over slick rock.
The route kisses the lakeshore twice more at two inviting coves, the second of them the famous Secret Cove that has a spur trail
extending along its north shore for an extraordinary view over the kayakers skirting the canyon walls.
After this, the trail winds deeper into the craggy Dells following narrow passages past steep rock faces and tenacious trees before its junction with the even more rugged Over the Hill Trail before bringing our intrepid adventurers back to the Peavine.
To reach the trail take Prescott Lakes Parkway northwest from state Route 69 or southeast from state Route 89A, turning onto Sundog Ranch Rd. (Yavapai Humane Society is at the intersection) and proceeding to the Prescott Peavine Trailhead, which will be on the left. Travel the first mile of the Peavine to the Lakeshore trailhead on the left and follow the white dots.

Hamlet at the Hive
Endeavor Theatre Co. & The Nines
Creative brought a revolutionary, immersive staging of Shakespeare’s Hamlet to the Art Hive in downtown Prescott May 3, 5, 10 and 11, during which audiences were led through the narrative as it played out across the entire floorplan of the building at 203 N. Cortez St.
Multimedia technology and immersive techniques let theatergoers become entangled — as complicit bystanders alongside the characters — in the mind of the young prince as he plays out his method of truth-seeking and, ultimately, tragic revenge.
Hamlet delved into the truths beneath the myriad masks we hold up to the world, and the constructs we call “mind.”
Audiences were limited to 25 people and attendees who arrived early were given the option of donning their own mask for the performance.
