D-Day Hero Flies Again — by Ray Newton 75 Years Later the clear blue sky. They landCol. David Hamilton of the U.S. Army Air Force was barely 22 when he Lt. ed near the Prescott Regional took the controls of a Douglas C-47 loaded Airport runway. with paratroopers and flew 50 feet above the English Channel as part of the first contingent to take troops to Normandy, France, June 6, 1944. Now known as D-Day, it commemorates the date the defeat of the Nazis began in Europe. Hamilton, who lives in Prescott Valley, is the last living Pathfinder pilot who flew on D-Day. Pathfinder pilots were among elite volunteers from the 101st and 82nd Airborne Divisions. Hamilton was the guest of honor for the annual Wings Out West Air Show. The Oct. 5 event was a part of the OctoberWest Homecoming activities sponsored by Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (ERAU). It is the third year the City of Prescott has co-partnered with ERAU to sponsor the air show. An air show highlight was a tribute to the 75th anniversary of D-Day. A historic C-53 flew and dropped paratroopers into

It’s hard to believe that same C-53 — called the D-Day Doll — 75 years earlier had dropped fully armed American soldiers into Nazi-occupied France. The D-Day Doll later flew dozens of missions following World War II into Germany as part of the Berlin Airlift operation. Hamilton was piloting a C-47 that same day, and he, too, dropped troops into France. During OctoberWest, he dressed in his full military uniform and greeted the paratroopers as they marched back. Medals pinned to his uniform jacket included four Air Medals, nine stars on the ETO campaign ribbon, two Presidential Unit Citations, the Order of William from Holland, and the French Legion of Honor Medal. Hamilton, who smiles readily and is quite agile and spry, other than using a cane to help maintain his balance, chuckled when responding to a question — “To what do you attribute your old age?” He grinned,

“Good genes — and lousy German antiaircraft weapons.” This past June, because of his distinguished record, Hamilton was invited by the Commemorative Air Force (CAF) to return to Lincolnshire, England and the base where he and his fellow pilots trained for their missions over Europe. Hamilton says they trained in secrecy. Hank Coats, president and CEO of the CAF, said of Hamilton, “He is a true American hero. He and his fellow Pathfinders flew a dangerous and vital mission in advance of the main D-Day invasion. We were thrilled to have the opportunity to back this trip for Dave, to give him a chance to return to his old British airfield and to share his story with the residents of North and South Witham in Lincolnshire.”

- Theodore Roosevelt Slept Here at Phippen Museum of Western Art - 1:00 PM - Theodore Roosevelt exhibited a greater influence on Arizona than perhaps any other president. He was the first sitting president to visit Arizona, employed an executive order to preserve the Grand Canyon, established a variety of wildlife refuges and reclamation projects, and enjoyed outdoor recreation in the area. This program will share Roosevelt’s widespread influence in Arizona, and also explore some stories of dubious accuracy that inevitably sprout from such a larger-than-life character. Kevin Schindler is an award-winning educator and writer who has worked for more than 20 years at Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff. He was sheriff of the Flagstaff Corral of Westerners for 14 years. - Narnia - The Musical at Elks Theatre & Performing Arts Center - 2:00 PM and 7:00 PM - The first and most famous story of The Chronicles of Narnia has become a musical presentation of this unique, enchanted world filled with creatures and spirits of myth and fable, both good and evil, demonic and transcendent. The principal inhabitants, however, are the intelligent talking animals ruled by the majestic King Aslan, the great lion of Narnia. Though Aslan is often absent from the land (so that his very existence is doubted by some), he returns when the need for him is greatest. And entering Narnia at a moment of high adventure are some children— plucked from our world in unexpected ways to help Narnia and to learn from their Narnia odyssey lessons of courage, unselfishness and wisdom that will help them grow. Narnia wants to sing, and from the excitement of the opening song, “Aslan’s on the Move,” to the joy of “Narnia (You Can’t Imagine),” your spirits will soar with all those in Narnia. - The Flip Orley Show at Elks Theatre & Performing Arts Center - 7:00 PM - Flip’s incredibly FUNNY show draws anxious fans to clubs across the country where they storm the stages, hoping to be among the lucky volunteers to grab a seat and become the stars of the show. The IMPROV and major comedy clubs across the country have had other hypnotists perform over the years, but none have come close to replicating the incredible crowds, amazing creativity, or quirky sense of humor that Flip brings to each and every one of his shows. Orley is adamant about not embarrassing his volunteers. He prefers his audiences to laugh with the volunteers, not at them. He takes great care in making sure that the stars of his show remember everything and have as much fun as his audience. For more information: http://www.prescottelkstheater.com.

ASK JUDY YOUR REAL ESTATE QUESTIONS

!

!!

Dear Judy, My wife, Donna and I are getting ready to list our home. We know we need to de-clutter, which is a big job since we have lived in the house for thirty years. Donna is a “collector” of roosters and has an assortment of about twenty-five (cookie jars, wall hangings, ceramic roosters, tea kettle, etc) and I think she needs to pack most of them away while the house is listed. Donna says this is “ridiculous” and unnecessary. What do you advise?

~ Bob in Prescott

Dear Bob, I love roosters! But mostly in their chicken coop. Yes, Bob, the roosters must “fly the coop” and be stored away while your home is listed. Buyers want to be able to see themselves and their belongings in a house, not yours. We want the buyers to see your kitchen, not the roosters. I hope this doesn’t ruffle Donna’s feathers.

This talk given by Dr. Quentin Bailey, Professor of Physics at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University will describe the current status of the Standard Cosmological Model of the Universe. Prescott eNews V

eteran’s Day is the day that the community comes out to give their appreciation and respect to our local veterans during the annual downtown parade. The 2019 theme is, “Honoring Korean War Veterans: Never Forget Their Service.”

2013: The City of Prescott, the VA

Medical Center and Embry Riddle joined together to bring the Veterans Day Parade to downtown Prescott. Senator John McCain was in attendance. It has taken place in downtown Prescott ever since.

Did You Know?

The Veteran’s Day Parade was an intimate event, originally held on the grounds of the Bob Stump Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

T

he Flying High Turkey Drive takes place a few days before Thanksgiving. Just look for Fire Department ladder trucks surrounded by local Chambers of Commerce members and lots of turkeys in the parking lot at Fry’s Grocery Stores. It benefits the Yavapai Food Bank, and ultimately the less fortunate in our community. This year’s event takes place on Monday, November 25.

2010: Mayor Marlin Kuykendall was

getting ready to judge the Veteran’s Day Parade, when he suffered a heart attack. The VA sent the Mayor by ambulance to Yavapai Regional Medical Center, where he later had quintuple heart bypass surgery. He made a full recovery, and attended the following year’s Veteran’s Day Parade.

P

rescott is Arizona’s official Christmas City, and the festivities start on Saturday, November 30th. During the day, local mom & pop’s hope you’ll take part in Shop Small: Small Business Saturday. Bundle up that evening and head downtown to enjoy the 24th annual Holiday Light Parade, which launches a month’s worth of Christmas celebrations.

2011: Due to extensive construction

around the VA Center, the annual parade was moved to the Embry Riddle campus.

2012: The parade returned to the Veterans Affairs Medical Center for one more year.
