REAL WESTERN

ADVENTURE

PRESCOTT, ARIZONA was first settled with the discovery of gold in Granite Creek. The City was founded in 1864. President Abraham Lincoln named Prescott the first Territorial Capital of Arizona, a distinction the City held from 1864-67 and again from 1877-89. In 1891, Prescott became the Yavapai County seat. In 1888, Prescott held its first rodeo. To this day, it is known as the World’s Oldest Rodeo®. In 1900, a fire leveled the famous Whiskey Row and the county courthouse. Notable figures from Prescott’s past include Doc Holliday and his mistress Big Nose Kate, who frequented the Palace and other Whiskey Row establishments. Sen. Barry Goldwater hailed from Prescott. His family owned a general merchandise store on Cortez Street in the downtown, and their name is still on the building. Western history is not all Prescott has to offer. Prescott is nestled in the central highlands of Arizona at a milehigh elevation. The City is surrounded by the Prescott National Forest and has 145,000 acres of ponderosas, five lakes and 450+ miles of trails.

HISTORY Most of all, you will enjoy genuine Western hospitality and an adventurous outdoor lifestyle that makes Prescott the “Best Destination in Arizona for Nature Lovers,” according to Expedia Viewfinder.

& RECREATION

HISTORIC WHISKEY ROW

LE T’S play P R E S K IT T !

You'll find most anything you want on historic Whiskey Row. Saunter through the same saloon doors where Wyatt Earp, Doc Holliday, Big Nose Kate and other legendary heroes — and scoundrels — would belly up to the bar. However, you'll find more than watering holes and live music. Explore locally owned authentic shops, galleries and boutiques.

TAKE A LEISURELY

WALKING TOUR

You will be filled with awe and wonder as a knowledgeable local guide describes historic and current local characters, events and locations. An easy walk of slightly less than a mile will give you a chance to learn the tales and traditions that have defined the City. Visit www.prescott.org for a complete schedule or call the Prescott Chamber of Commerce at 928.445.2000 for details.

Festivities begin in late November with the colorful Holiday Light Parade where elaborate decorated floats and holiday music will have you smiling. Ultimately, you may wind up at the community bonfire just up the street at Mile High Middle School. The first week of December features the colorful daytime Christmas Parade with more than 100 entries including almost everyone in town. If you’re lucky enough to be here in early December, you’ll beam when the Yavapai County Courthouse Plaza lights turn the dark into a kaleidoscope of holiday colors. This year will be the 70th annual lighting. Join local students, townspeople and visitors in singing traditional Christmas carols.
