Inspired Giving For some, it is an intentional choice of how to enjoy an inspired life; for others it is a natural “default” to find inspiration in even the smallest acts of kindness. The common message in all of this is that inspiration awakens us to new possibilities. This theme is woven throughout the GenerousLiving Community Impact Report. We are pleased to share the title of “Inspired Giving” to help awaken our most impassioned thoughts about inspiration. Directly related is the impact inspiration can have, which is why it’s crucial that you know your support touches more lives than you could possibly fathom.

The Impact of Your Generosity Bob heard the words none of us ever want to hear when doctors said, “You have cancer.” Thanks to the incredible generosity of others, Bob’s physicians were able to provide the former Army Reserves logistics officer with the advanced technology needed to win his battle against this insidious disease. And it is technology that has helped Bob more than once in his lifetime (see Bob’s story page 7).

The outcome of this great partnership is the stories of inspiration and the impact on people’s lives, which is why we’re sharing this special edition of GenerousLiving. We’d like you to know more about the progress in healthcare and wellness made possible with your support to the Generosity for Generations Campaign.

The Next Generation: Inspired to Serve Introducing Cornelius D. Haskell Todd Hornback, Chair of the Sun Health Foundation Board of Trustees, proudly introduces the board’s newest member. “As Chair, I’ve had the privilege to serve with other visionary leaders on both the Foundation Board of Trustees and Sun Health Board of Directors. They share their expertise, backgrounds, perspectives, creative thinking and insight, and most of all their passion to give back to their community. What is especially gratifying is when new members are ready and excited to contribute their talents and fresh ideas. One such member is a West Valley resident who also is a visionary community leader. Welcome Cornelius D. Haskell (Neal)!”

Strong West Valley Roots Neal is a third generation West Valley resident who moved to Sun City West in 2014 from Omaha, Nebraska. He followed in the footsteps of his parents, who moved to Sun City West in the 1980s, and his grandparents who moved to Sun City in the 1970s. Neal recalls his visits to see his grandparents and driving I-17 to West Bell Road, which was only partially paved. He also remembers passing the

orchard groves, and the earliest days of Boswell and Del E. Webb medical centers that his parents and grandparents relied on for care. Neal’s background is in finance as an investment advisor, most recently with CDH Capital Management in both Omaha and Sun City West. He is now semi-retired so he can focus more on living life to the fullest; a life that includes philanthropy. Not long after Neal moved, he became active in his church, which is where he met Patricia Lewis Finnell, Chair of the Sun Health Board of Directors. They both served on the church’s Finance Committee. Through Patricia, he learned more about the impact philanthropy has had on the healthcare climate of our community. “I am very impressed with the work of Sun Health Foundation and how the communities in the West Valley are so integral to the story of healthcare,” Neal says. It was after they both stepped down from their roles on the church committee that Patricia invited him to consider a board position. After meeting with other Sun Health Foundation leaders and board members, Neal knew serving on the board was the right fit for him.

Neal Haskell on his Harley

“There’s a legacy of philanthropy in this community, and I’m proud to be a part,” Neal says. “I love being involved, so living in the West Valley and serving in this way are both ideal for me.” He adds, “It’s important not so much to be a taker, but a giver to others.” Neal is a visionary who looks forward to what lies ahead. “Being visionary is important as we look toward the future needs for resources in these communities where people are aging better and living longer.” In addition to his church activities, Neal enjoys travel and all things outdoors, including hiking, pickleball, golf, riding motorcycles and more. He also loves spending time with his family, including wife Sarah, four children and four grandchildren.

Thanks to your generosity, Sun Health Foundation’s Generosity for Generations Campaign has reached 75% of the goal of 100%. Because bringing the latest innovations in healthcare can’t wait, your donations already are making an impact in the lives of patients, families, caregivers and program participants. Progress in 2021 included: • A beautiful 5,000-square-foot nursery expansion opened in Banner Del E. Webb Medical Center’s Louisa Kellam Center for Women’s Health that allows for more beds and more space for families to spend time bonding with their newborns. • The orthopedic care at Banner Del E. Webb Medical Center became a new state-of-the-art, Banner Center for Orthopedics. • Lung Cancer Care at Banner Boswell Medical Center and Breast Cancer Care at Banner Del E. Webb Medical Center began expanding capacity and adding advancements in technology. • Because of the newly transformed Emergency Department at Banner Boswell Medical Center, there are now additional patient care enhancements. In 2021, these included the addition of a Cardiac Catheterization Lab conveniently located nearby. • A total of 31% more participants (compared to 2020) in Sun Health’s Community Education and Wellness programs have enjoyed the benefits of health education, fitness and care management programs at low or no cost.

The Future Happening Today “You have cancer.” Bob Colli of Surprise recalls hearing the three words none of us ever want to hear. Thanks to what his physicians said next, the former military logistics officer from the Army felt reassured he was in great hands. That’s because he was informed his treatment options included minimally invasive robotic-assisted surgery at Banner Boswell Medical Center – advanced technology that was made possible by the generosity of the community. After hearing about the benefits this type of surgery offered, Bob was all in. The superior care he received contributed to his full recovery.

Years later, robotic medical technology was there for Bob again when he needed a different type of surgery – a double hernia repair. He says both minimally invasive surgeries enhanced his recovery. “I was able to return home sooner and recover more quickly,” Bob says. He was glad because he had an active life to resume. Most recently, he enjoys living the good life at The Colonnade, a Sun Health Residential Community in Surprise. He loves being involved in a variety of activities, so life at The Colonnade is the perfect match. His calendar is filled with excursions, golf, hikes, and participating in Sun Health Wellness programs such as strength training, yoga, tai chi, cardio drumming, and line dancing.

visibility, it’s now possible to detect lung cancer earlier and target more effective treatments. “These robotic machines almost look like something out of Star Wars,” Bob says. “I think robotic technology is the thing of the future – the future happening today.”

While Bob is thankful he doesn’t need surgery these days, he is comforted to know the generosity of others is continuing to make possible a new type of robot that’s pivotal in the diagnosis and treatment of lung cancer – and one of only two in Arizona.

Bob is grateful the latest advancements were available when he needed them most. Yet, without adequate funding for advanced technology, they simply would not have been possible.

The groundbreaking technology is a robotic-assisted bronchoscopy machine that allows access to and biopsy of lung nodules in hard-to-reach-places to determine if there is cancer. With greater reach and

to Experience the Joy of Philanthropy What inspired their philanthropy? Jim Greenwald and Gracie Carter share their stories with Sun Health Foundation.

— Shirley Frizell. She happened to be one of my new neighbors living in my building. Knowing nothing about Surprise, the Sun Health Foundation or their connection to The Colonnade, Shirley introduced me to the Sun Health Organization.

Gracie Carter

There is no way I can fully thank her and all the Sun Health “angels” who watched over Paul and me during his illness and death. Nor can I begin to repay all the service, care and comfort having Sun Health watching over us has given to me. They say God gives us what we need when we need it, and I thank Him every day for leading me to my wonderful forever home/neighbors and guardians under the Sun Health umbrella.

The first person Paul and I met when touring Sun Health’s The Colonnade — who actually opened the front door for us — was Jim Greenwald. Jim didn’t realize his role as a crusader of Sun Health at that time, but he was an ambassador for The Colonnade.

Forever my gratitude and love, Gracie

Our salesperson was busy so Jim took the time to introduce us to life as a resident through his eyes. Once we were shown the second unit, we were sold.

Jim Greenwald My wife Linda never wavered when it came to philanthropy. In addition to annual donations to two major charities, she had a group of smaller ones that she called her own. Each meant something special to her. These were charities she gave to monthly. Five dollars to this one, 10 to this one, and the lucky one might get 20. I really didn’t understand what that was all about … until Linda was about to pass away.

We were given a lunch voucher to “think it over,” so as we were enjoying our delicious Reubens, Jim wheeled his wife Linda into the Bistro to introduce her to us. He was impressed after meeting us and felt she would be, too. What none of us knew at that time, we bought the unit directly under Jim and Linda. That was the beginning of an amazing friendship and journey with Sun Health that Jim and I feel so blessed to share. Once again fate brought me to meet another crusader Jim Greenwald and Gracie Carter

8

She explained to me that every time she wrote one of those checks she knew she would be helping someone. Her hope for me was that I would soon find my own charities; that I would give not because

SunHealthFoundation.org |

The simple joy of giving from the heart. Over a period of four years, Linda and I spent more time at Banner Boswell Medical Center, Banner Del E. Webb Medical Center, and Grandview Health and Rehabilitation Center than we did at our home at The Colonnade. I can never repay the doctors, nurses and CNAs for the care and kindness they gave her.

I thought I had to or because someone would think I was a good person, but because it gave me joy, the joy that she experienced.

Linda’s last wish has been met. I’ve found my own charities now, and I fully relish the joy of giving. I now have two local charities that I support, with The Sun Health Foundation being the primary one. I also find that I want others to find that same joy. What I do know, however, is that I can’t suggest to others what I have not done myself.

The reason I’ve set up my Legacy or I’m donating my Mandatory Distribution or the reason I’m sharing my story is because of Gracie Carter, a resident of The Colonnade. She walked the walk, as they say, and she talks the talk. To me, this interaction between a present donor and a prospective one is key. One person who is committed to philanthropy, convincing another to follow their lead. To join them and the Sun Health Foundation in contributing to the community. It becomes a domino effect and spreads. James E. Greenwald, CPCU, ARM, AIM

Generosity sets the wheels in motion to benefit women, infants A national company, and household name, is an inspiring leader in philanthropy. A generous grant has been awarded to Sun Health Foundation’s Generosity for Generations Campaign by The Diane and Bruce Halle Foundation in support of growing healthcare needs for women and newborn infants at Banner Del E. Webb Medical Center’s Louisa Kellam Center for Women’s Health in Sun City West. If the name Bruce Halle rings a bell, it’s with good reason. The late Mr. Halle founded Discount Tire, the world’s largest independent tire and wheel retailer with more than 1,000 stores in 34 states. Both Mr. and Mrs. Halle have devoted their lives to giving back to support neighbors, heal communities and expand access to medical care. “The West Valley of Maricopa County has been the fastest growing (part of a) county in the country for several years now. It is important for pregnant women

to have access to high quality healthcare in their community. The Halle Foundation is proud to partner with the Sun Health Foundation and provide this support,” foundation Executive Director Tom Egan says. With this grant, a significant impact is being made in funding new enhancements in healthcare and wellness services to ensure they’re available when needed for expectant moms, infants and their families in surrounding West Valley communities and across the Valley. “We’re deeply honored to receive this generous gift from this amazing foundation led by exceptional community leaders with such dedication and compassion for helping others,” says Gina W. Ore, Chief Philanthropy Officer for Sun Health Foundation. “Because of their generosity, Sun Health Foundation and Banner Del E. Webb Medical Center are recognizing them with the naming of an area at the medical center in their honor. It was 20 years ago when the Louisa Kellam Center for Women’s Health opened with the birth of twins on Feb. 2, 2002. From just over 300 babies that first year to approximately 2,000 babies in recent years, the center is continuing to grow with the West Valley.

11

“Louisa and I are filled with gratitude for The Halle Foundation’s generosity and their vision that we share to ensure that superior healthcare services at the Louisa Kellam Center for Women’s Health continue to be provided,” says Birt Kellam, Chairman of Sun Health Foundation’s Generosity for Generations Campaign. “It’s a source of great pride for us and the West Valley that women and infant services are continually recognized among the top obstetrics programs and Banner Del E. Webb Medical Center has been named among the top hospitals in the country.” In December, U.S. News & World Report named Banner Del E. Webb Medical Center among the nine best hospitals in Arizona in which to have a baby. Other recognitions include Newsweek and The Leapfrog Group that earlier ranked the medical center among the eight Best Maternity Care Hospitals 2021. These recognitions are testaments to the superior healthcare supported by the community, for the community. For more information, visit SunHealthFoundation.org/generosity or call (623) 471-8500.

DONOR PROFILE:

A Life Dedicated to Healthcare: Elaine Lahr From the time she was a child in New Jersey, Elaine Lahr knew she wanted to be a nurse. Once she achieved her dream as an adult, she was drawn to emergency medicine because of its busy and unpredictable nature. During her career, she worked at hospitals well known for providing exceptional care. When Elaine moved to California to escape the snow and to seek adventure, she met her late husband Philip, a urologist who later completed a second residency in anesthesiology. “We shared a love of medicine and were both athletic, too,” Elaine says. “Our first date was playing tennis.” After Elaine and Philip married, they lived in Seattle briefly before settling in California where Philip practiced at the renowned Stanford University Medical Center for 22 years. They raised a son and a daughter, who also is a nurse. When the Lahr’s decided to retire, they chose Sun City West because of the active, vibrant lifestyle that suited them so well. As medical professionals, the quality of healthcare was also an important factor. They built a home just minutes from Banner Del E. Webb medical center.

“When Philip needed medical care, Banner Del E. Webb was right there for us,” Elaine says. “He was well cared for, and we were pleased with the quality of services and attentive staff.” That speaks volumes coming from a physician and a nurse who provided care at some of the finest hospitals in the country.

More than 30 years after moving to Sun City West with Philip, today Elaine is grateful for the 58 wonderful years she had with her husband and the active life she continues to live that includes lawn bowling, bocce, crafts and playing pool with the “Miscues.” “The quality of life and healthcare are great. Moving here was the right thing to do.”

“Philip and I shared a love for medical care — that was our life,” Elaine says. “We also shared a love for giving back through the years to help those in need.” Their support has included charitable contributions to healthcare services through Sun Health Foundation. Their legacy of generosity continues today. When Elaine learned of the innovative renovation of Banner Boswell’s Emergency Department, she was inspired to support this transformative project with a charitable contribution to the Generosity for Generations Campaign. She says this project spoke to her because of her love of emergency medicine and her understanding of the importance of exceptional medical care. “What a beautiful facility,” she says. “The layout is really magnificent. Banner Boswell and Banner Del E. Webb are close by and near and dear to me. I feel an allegiance to support the services that are here for all of us.” Philip and Elaine Lahr

INSPIRED TO GIVE BACK

The Time-Honored Gifts from Friends in Philanthropy

More than 130 volunteers 14,019 total volunteer hours

“Alone we can do so little, together we can do so much.” – Helen Keller Sun Health Foundation proudly recognizes special groups for their commitment to serving and the ways they give back to their community. They are counted among the Friends in Philanthropy who have made invaluable contributions, often spanning generations, to ensure superior healthcare in the West Valley. We honor them for all the ways they give of themselves, and in doing so inspire others. This inspiration is the impetus for Sun Health Foundation’s Generosity for Generations Campaign, which celebrates the generosity of those who contribute their time, talent, treasure, and testimony. Quite simply, it takes all of us to make possible the facilities, programs, and services that are among the best in the country.

Medical Professionals “I have been blessed with a successful career in Cardiac Surgery in the West Valley for almost 30 years. I owe my success to the countless residents of the Sun Cities who have entrusted me with their hearts. Literally! It is that trust and faith in me that inspires me every day.” Dr. Rajeev S. Kathuria, Chief of Cardiovascular & Thoracic Surgery at Banner Boswell

For generations, medical professionals including physicians, nurses and others have demonstrated their commitment to caring, both for patients and for their community. Many are so committed to serving the communities of the West Valley, they’ve practiced here for many years and served generations of patients. Since 2017: • Medical professionals have donated a total of $206,018.25

Volunteers Volunteering makes me happy because I’m supporting my community. My goal when I retired was to give back. I’m enjoying what I do and having a great time. Karen Young, Volunteer Sun Health Resale Boutique

20

It was the 1960s when community volunteers went door to door seeking support from area residents for a hospital — known today as Banner Boswell Medical Center. They were the first members of Sun Health Foundation and their efforts inspired support that paved the way for the arrival of healthcare in the community. Through the years, their donations of time and talent have been essential to supporting the growth of healthcare services and wellness programs with those extra special touches of support and caring that make all the difference. Today, more than 50 years later, volunteers continue to provide invaluable contributions of their time and talent in many ways. In 2021: • More than 130 volunteers (Sun Health Resale Shop, Sun Health Resale Boutique, Sun Health Foundation, and Sun Health Community Health and Wellness) • 14,019 total volunteer hours • Most hours contributed by a single volunteer: 9,840

INSPIRED TO CARE

Physicians Share Messages of Inspiration We’re often inspired by the dedication of physicians, nurses and other medical professionals in their delivery of patient care. The following messages reflect the inspiration physicians have in serving their community, and the gratitude patients and families feel for the care they receive.

“The mission of Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center is to End Cancer. We are honored to partner with the Sun Health Foundation as we bring world class, multi-disciplinary oncology services closer to your home. I am inspired each day by our team of teams who work tirelessly together to get us a step closer to this audacious goal.“ – Dr. Phillip J. Koo, Chief of Diagnostic Imaging Physician Executive, Northwest Region Banner MD Anderson

“I have practiced in this community for the past 17 years and seen it grow exponentially. During this time, healthcare options for our patients have also expanded for the better. Sun Health Foundation has had a major role to play in this growth and the foundation’s support and impact is felt across all healthcare specialties and particularly in oncology. I feel that the Foundation shares in my desire to make a difference in the quality of our patients lives every single day. Our mutual goal is that our patients have access to comprehensive and advanced cancer care and opportunities to participate in research trials and cutting-edge treatment.” – Dr. Shelly Gandhok, Hematologist/Oncologist Banner MD Anderson “With the generous support of the Sun Health Foundation and the community, we have been able to build a worldclass thoracic surgery program which offers the latest in robotic surgery making shorter hospital stays and less pain possible with complex operations.” – Dr. Elbert Kuo, Section Chief of Thoracic Surgery Banner MD Anderson “Cardiology is my passion, and I am enthusiastic about the advanced options that we are now able to offer our patients here locally at our Boswell and Del Webb locations. We now have cutting-edge technologies available in structural heart treatment options and less invasive surgical options all right here in our community. “I have been blessed with a successful career in cardiac surgery in the West Valley for almost 30 years. I owe my success to the countless residents of the Sun Cities who have entrusted me with their hearts. Literally! It is that trust and faith in me that inspires me every day.” – Dr. Rajeev S. Kathuria, Chief of Cardiovascular & Thoracic Surgery at Banner Boswell Medical Center

Banner Del E. Webb Medical Center

“A sense of community creates purpose, and purpose allows people to thrive. I am thankful that organizations like Sun Health Foundation foster this community, and it’s an honor to be part of it. What gives me inspiration is knowing that my vocation allows me the opportunity to help people live a better quality of life each and every day.” – Dr. John Kearney, Orthopedic Surgeon The CORE Institute “I grew up in Peoria, AZ. Nothing is more fulfilling than serving the community that inspired and developed me. It has been an honor.“ – Dr. John Thompson, Orthopedic Surgeon The CORE Institute “Although the ED physicians’ encounters with patients may be brief, it often impacts in a positive way our patient’s life for years to come. It’s this impact that keeps us motivated to continue to take care of our community.” – Dr. Hites Patel, Director of Emergency Services Banner Boswell Medical Center

“Working in the Emergency Departments at Banner Boswell and Banner Del E. Webb has afforded me the opportunity to serve one of the most grateful communities I’ve been involved with. People would be surprised how few times providers in the ED hear ‘thank you.’ At both locations, we’re constantly receiving well wishes and cards expressing patients’ gratitude for the care we provide. Especially during these trying times, this means so much to the doctors, PAs, nurses and techs in the department. Being able to serve such a gracious and caring population has been incredibly meaningful.

“Sun Health Foundation has always taken into consideration the health and wellbeing of the residents of the Sun Cities. Their focus has been and continues to be the improvement in the health the residents and surrounding areas.” – Dr. Fred Kogan, Gastroenterologist “A great primary care doctor is then one that teams up best with his patients. The most important thing in discussion, is that what is important to the patient.” – Dr. Pedro Rodriguez (Guggiari), Internist, True Care MD Meeting the orthopedic needs of the residents in this community since 2005 has been a distinct privilege! My family and I have been honored to have enjoyed so many wonderful relationships with kind and generous patients. Thank you to the community and to Sun Health Foundation for trusting us! – Dr. John Brown, Orthopedic Surgeon, The CORE Institute

My organization, Vituity, has been proud to be a donor for the new Emergency Department at Banner Boswell and looks forward to continuing to serve the Sun Health community for many years.” – Dr. Scott Lopata, Sharing messages that inspire us is one way to recognize the medical Regional Director, Vituity professionals who care for us. “When people come in to shop or donate items, I always thank them and let them know they are supporting healthcare in the community,” she adds. “Shoppers are happy to be a part of that, and like to know their dollars stay local and make an impact right here close to home.” – Karen Young

Volunteer Karen Young

Oh, what a feeling! People not only feel good about shopping at the Sun Health Resale Boutique in Sun City and the Sun Health Resale Shop in Sun City West; they are inspired to volunteer there, too. Sun City resident Karen Young volunteers at the Sun Health Resale Boutique at 9843 W. Bell Road and enjoys meeting new people and helping them shop. “Volunteering makes me happy because I’m giving back to my community. My goal when I retired was to give back.” That was 2011, and she’s been volunteering at the Sun Health Resale Boutique ever since.

Karen is not alone. She and the other volunteers at both shops enjoy giving back with their donations of time and talent that are a true treasure. And they enjoy the feeling that they are part of a family of volunteers and staff who care about supporting their community. That’s because proceeds from sales stay right here in our community and provide direct funding support to healthcare and wellness programs at Banner Boswell and Banner Del E. Webb medical centers, and Sun Health’s wellness programs through the Generosity for Generations Campaign. Each boutique-like shop offers a remarkable selection of vintage, collectables and specialty items – some that are unique and one-of-a-kind. Shoppers enjoy a selection of distinctive and quality items and save money too. It’s a unique shopping experience, with something new every day. Plus, all purchases are sales-tax free.

SHINE For almost 55 years, Sun Health has been a dedicated community partner and advocate for longer, healthier, more purposeful lives. It is this vision that inspires Sun Health employees, residents, donors and volunteers to continually look for ways to make the community a better place. The SHINE Committee (Sun Health Involvement Never Ends) is a volunteer group of Sun Health employees and residents from the Sun Health Communities collaborating on service projects that benefit the community and area nonprofits. Contributions of time, talent and treasure support projects through Sun Health Foundation. Volunteers make an impact and experience the joy of giving back.

Street Cleanups Sun Health loves to help keep communities beautiful. In Surprise, SHINE turned out for the cleanup of the stretch of road adopted on Reems Road between Grand Avenue and Bell Road. In Goodyear, volunteers partnered with the Rotary Club of Goodyear PebbleCreek to clean up the south side of Indian School Road from Sarival Avenue to Bullard Avenue. Great participation.

Backpack Drive for Kids in Foster Care To help kids be school ready, Sun Health partnered with OCJ Kids (Opportunity Community and Justice for Kids) to conduct a backpack drive for children living in foster care. Through Sun Health Foundation, proceeds from this event went directly to buying backpacks that were filled with a year’s worth of school supplies. Each child also was also given a pair of earbuds and a gift card for clothing or shoes.

Walk to End Alzheimer’s—West Valley Sun Health’s SHINE Committee and staff joined Sun Health Communities residents from Grandview Terrace and La Loma Village. Participants at each walk site had a great time while supporting Alzheimer’s research through this annual Alzheimer’s Association event.

Soldier’s Best Friend This organization assists our country’s veterans by training rescue dogs to become veteran service dogs. Sun Health raised enough money to sponsor two veteran/dog teams, one in 2019 and the second in 2021. Below is a photo of the second team, Jeff and Forrest, an Aussie mix rescued from the Arizona Animal Welfare League. It was the generosity of Sun Health staff that made rescuing Forrest and providing Jeff with a service dog possible!

SHINE Blood Drive The SHINE Blood Drive with Vitalent saw an outpouring of support by staff, families and residents who participated at Sun Health’s La Loma Village, Grandview Terrace and The Colonnade. Their donations contributed to the critical need for blood and helped save lives.
