A Look Back Over 5 Decades
The legacy we celebrate spans more than five decades.
More than 55 years of generosity has propelled us to where we are today, at the culmination of the Generosity for Generations Campaign celebration. It’s a meaningful story to tell.
Community. Unity. Generosity.
Singularly, these words are impressive; together, they’re transformative. Because of you, our community has amazing facilities, incredible healthcare and wellness programs, and outstanding medical professionals that frame an exceptional medical oasis in the West Valley – all here FOR the community BECAUSE of the community.
A Moment in Time:
We’re bringing the best of the past forward as we honor moments in time in the following pages. We speak for many that our gratitude is immeasurable for the chapters you’ve helped write!
The Legacy We Celebrate
When the Sun Health Foundation story began, Sun City was known as the City of Volunteers. They established the foundation for the culture of philanthropy in the community – giving time, talent, treasure, and testimony through the years.
1965
DEVCO president John Meeker called together a committee to develop plans to provide Sun City with its own healthcare facilities.
1968
“If we’re not supporting the healthcare services that support us, who will? —Laurel Gedan, Sun Health Grandview Terrace resident and long-time friend of Sun Health Foundation
A fund drive to build a hospital in Sun City was launched by area residents, igniting a community wide effort and desire to give. Eagerly, these residents went door to door seeking contributions for construction of Boswell Memorial Hospital. They were passionate, they were dedicated, and they influenced others to support the arrival of top medical care for the community.

Generosity Opens Boswell Memorial Hospital
The 1970s
It was an astounding turnout, beyond anyone’s expectations. On Nov. 6, 1970, more than 5,000 area residents flocked to the dedication of Boswell Memorial Hospital, known today as Banner Boswell Medical Center. That was nearly half of Sun City’s population at the time.
The hospital opened on November 16. By the end of the first six months of operation, the hospital had already reached a peak of 80% patient-bed capacity. As healthcare needs escalated, a cascade of philanthropy rolled through the community to build impressive healthcare facilities that attracted the most prestigious medical professionals to serve the community.
“I had a wonderful experience at Del Webb. Everyone was attentive and prompt. I’m so grateful to the hospital, to the staff, and to my surgeon above all. I have my life back.” —Joanne Sheehy, who received an anterior hip replacement, a state-of-the-art procedure performed with advanced medical equipment and surgical expertise
“We were so blessed to have Boswell Medical Center so close when we moved here.” —Aloise Wrobel
Generosity Builds Del E. Webb Memorial Hospital
The 1980s
The year was 1985 when hundreds of locals and elected officials and other dignitaries, including New York Yankees legend Mickey Mantle, gathered on Oct. 7 to break ground on a 203-bed hospital in Sun City West. Officials announced the name would be Del E. Webb Memorial Hospital, in honor of the founder of the Sun Cities. During his speech, Mr. Mantle paid tribute to the late Mr. Webb, who co-owned the Yankees during the height of Mantle’s career.
The hospital, now Banner Del E. Webb Medical Center, opened on Jan. 4, 1988, to much fanfare in the community.

Surgical Innovation
The 1990s
In 1998, Boswell Memorial Hospital became the first Arizona hospital at which a new heart-valve replacement surgery was performed with a porcine tissue valve. This innovation in cardiovascular surgery offered a new, biological option for aortic valve replacement, compared to the mechanical valve, which provided surgeons with the opportunity to further tailor treatment to the needs of each patient.
The hospital was among the first in Arizona to receive this technology; generous donations from the community funded this advancement.
“I’ve been extremely passionate about the care we provide at this hospital, and I’ve been practicing for close to 30 years now. I would say we have one of the best hospitals in the country right here in the West Valley.”
—Dr. Rajeev S. Kathuria, Chief of Cardiovascular & Thoracic Surgery at Banner Boswell Medical Center; Medical Director, Structural Heart Program
Generosity Expands Healthcare Facilities 2000
A significant structural expansion opened at Boswell Memorial Hospital in April 2000, including the new Heart Center. More than 2,000 area residents arrived for tours on opening day, double what was anticipated. This further underscored not only the need for cardiac care but also the special connection our community has to supporting exceptional medical care.

2002
Double the celebration! The Louisa Kellam Center for Women’s Health opened on Feb. 2 at Del E. Webb Memorial Hospital to meet the growing healthcare needs of women from maternity to menopause and beyond –just in time to welcome the birth of twins.
2008
Banner Health acquired Boswell and Del E. Webb hospitals in September and a strong philanthropic partnership with Sun Health Foundation and the community continued to ensure the availability of superior healthcare.
“The design of the entire floor, together with the birthing suites, definitely has the mom, dad, and baby in mind. There’s a sense of comfort, and it feels like a family space.” —Stacey Lester, who delivered her three children at the Louisa Kellam Center for Women’s Health.

Measuring Success – The Impact You Make
Lives Impacted at Banner Boswell and Banner Del E. Webb medical centers and at Sun Health Wellness
The power of community is evidenced by people coming together to help one another. Your generosity impacts the health and wellbeing of patients, families, caregivers, and program participants.
Life-saving accomplishments are made possible by philanthropic support — from the unity and generosity of this community. Because of you, more lives are transformed by these programs and services:
• A reimagined emergency department at Banner Boswell. Improvements are evident in every aspect of the ED experience from reduced wait times to an increase in isolation rooms to contain airborne illnesses.
• Earlier, more accurate diagnoses for lung cancer at Banner MD Anderson Cancer at Banner Boswell. Boswell now offers the only minimally invasive, robotic biopsies for lung cancer in the West Valley.
• State-of-the-art breast cancer imaging and treatment at Banner Del E. Webb Medical Center. A new upright, stereotactic surgical table means patients can undergo 3D imaging or finely targeted treatment with a greater degree of comfort — and the highest possible confidence.
• Expanded care for women at the Louisa Kellam Center for Women’s Health at Banner Del E. Webb. More women can be served from maternity to menopause and beyond with services that now include an expanded Level 2 Nursery that offers the best possible welcome to thousands of new West Valley lives.
• A new level of comfort for orthopedics diagnoses at Banner Del E. Webb Medical Center. Banner Del E. Webb’s new diagnostic equipment not only is more comfortable, but it also ensures more targeted treatments with better outcomes.
• Continued expansion of a West Valley signature: Sun Health Wellness. Campaign donors have supported the development of new educational offerings and programs designed to improve overall health and wellbeing.
• Another crucial metric: Recruitment and retention of remarkable physicians. Funding advancements in technology and construction of facilities that in turn attracts and retains the finest medical professionals from all over the world.

OUR JOURNEY TO GENEROSITY:
By Laurel Gedan
About six years ago, my husband Ira and I were invited to attend an informational luncheon about Sun Health. Ira wasn’t able to attend, so I went alone. I had never heard of Sun Health and had no idea what they did. It was a cozy, small group gathering. Honestly, I was fascinated by what the speaker said. I must have asked him 100 questions.
He talked about how Sun Health started in 1968 when the nearest hospital for the community of Sun City was way downtown in central Phoenix. And, since most doctors have their offices near hospitals, most of the doctors were located pretty far away too.
The speaker told us about how the residents of Sun City formed the Sun Health Foundation and went door to door to raise money to build their own hospital and to bring doctors to Sun City. That was how Boswell Hospital was built.
We then heard how Sun City West began. There were very few people living in this new city, but the residents
of Sun City knew there would be a need for another hospital so they, once, again, went door to door to raise money. It was from their contributions, in 1988, that Del E. Webb Hospital was built. As a resident of Sun City West, I remember thinking how lucky we were that those generous people did that.
The speaker then told us about how the Catheterization Lab at Del E. Webb came about – once again from the generous donations of the people in the West Valley. The lab was built in the year 2011, and I never really thought about where the money came from to build it. All I knew was that it was there when I needed it…and I was really grateful. Next, he relayed how Sun Health gave the initial funding to the CORE Institute so that they could move here and open their doors to the many people who need their innovative orthopedic practice. I have been a patient many times, but I never knew Sun Health was involved with them locating here in the first place. Again, I was grateful to Sun Health for being so forward- thinking.
I then heard about the Sun Health Center for Health and Wellbeing on Grand Avenue and their array of wellness programs – and remembered the many programs I had attended there. Once again, I had not realized Sun Health’s involvement and that contributions from the community make that Center possible.
The speaker also talked about how Sun Health Foundation’s fundraising inspires the community to make contributions to our two hospitals, helping them buy the newest, most cutting-edge medical technology. Philanthropy helps to ensure that our two hospitals are excellent hospitals. And excellent
hospitals attract excellent doctors. The more I learned about what Sun Health has done for the healthcare systems in the West Valley, the more I realized how many times Sun Health has touched my life – and I never realized it. They’re like a silent guardian angel, staying in the background, making sure all of us are getting the best healthcare possible.
When Ira and I made the decision to step up our charitable donations, for us, Sun Health was the obvious recipient. We realized if we didn’t support the healthcare community in the West Valley, who would? And so, we do.
THE POWER OF GENEROSITY

JULIE SOSKE: Following Her Heart to Where Healthcare is Best
Lights. Camera. Action. These three words describe Julie Soske’s life before moving to Sun City West in 2017 from Hollywood, California, after working in the movie industry for decades.
It was a glamorous life in many ways, but when it came time to consider moving to Arizona with a treasured friend, she seized the opportunity for a change. And it was a change for the better.
Fortunately, she moved where some of the best medical professionals and hospitals in the country are located. And they’ve been here when she needed them.
Julie has had several health scares in her life including breast and lung cancer, for which she was treated many years ago. A more recent scare happened here the fall of 2019. Although she had easily walked to her mailbox hundreds of times, one day she began feeling out of breath. Given her health history, she jumped into action and scheduled a visit with her primary care doctor.
Suspecting her heart was the issue, Julie’s doctor referred her to a cardiologist, who scheduled her for tests including an angiogram at Banner Del E. Webb Medical Center.
Results revealed not one but two concerns — a blocked coronary artery and an aortic aneurysm. She was referred to cardiothoracic surgeon, Dr. Rajeev
Kathuria, who performed open heart surgery at Banner Boswell Medical Center. She enthusiastically credits him for saving her life.
Having medical teams and top-rated hospitals close to home gives Julie tremendous comfort.
“I love my doctors and trust them for their thoroughness, honesty, and integrity,” she says.
Julie is now feeling so good she’s enjoying gettogethers with friends and pursuing her hobbies as a portrait artist and photographer.
and healthcare here, and the joy of being part of a community that cares for one another.”
“There’s a real feeling of unity.”
In gratitude, she is giving back with donations to Sun Health Foundation in support of the greatest health needs at these community hospitals to help ensure the continuation of superior care. Her generosity is being commemorated with beautiful leaves adorning the hospitals’ Donor Recognition Walls — one leaf honoring her friend and the other honoring Dr. Kathuria.
Helping others is in Julie’s DNA and why living in this community of caring means so much to Julie. She’s been a caregiver to both her mom and friend, and she always tries to help her other friends in need.
Julie says her greatest pleasure isn’t receiving, it’s giving.
“A common misconception is that a person on the receiving end of a gift is happiest, but to me the giver is the one elated.”
She’s traveled to cities around the world, but when you ask her what her favorite of them all is, she’s quick to say right here in the Sun Cities.
“Every day is wonderful… like utopia,” she says. “I feel so at home here. It’s because of the quality of life
Julie’s generous spirit reflects the spirit of a 55-year tradition that is the hallmark of the West Valley — a spirit that can be summed up in three words to describe her new life here: Community. Unity. Generosity.
Welcome home, Julie!
Julie Soske has traveled all over the world and collected many treasures, but she still loves Sun City West best.

Namings Honor Family Legacies
Select areas at Banner Del E. Webb Medical Center have a vibrant new look. That’s because they’ve been named to honor the generosity of donors.
In 2022, Sun Health Foundation and Banner Del E. Webb staff joined with donors for the exciting moment when the new names were officially unveiled: the Ira and Laurel Gedan Auditorium A, the Kenneth C. and Charlene L. Haiges Surgery Family Waiting Room, and The Diane and Bruce Halle Foundation main lobby.
Their legacies of generosity and caring live on in the impact they will perpetually have on the health and wellbeing of future generations in the following areas:
Both the Gedans and the Haiges have graciously designated their gifts to benefit the greatest needs.
A grant from The Diane and Bruce Halle Foundation is supporting growing healthcare needs of women and newborn infants at the Louisa Kellam Center for Women’s Health.
In 1960, the late Mr. Halle founded Discount Tire, the world’s largest independent tire and wheel retailer.
In 2002, Mr. and Mrs. Halle founded The Diane and Bruce Halle Foundation, which now serves as a statewide leader in providing philanthropic resources for organizations working in the fields of human services, health & medical, education, arts & culture, and spirituality.

Years of total contributions, thanks to the unity and generosity of our community
How can I help carry on our community’s tradition of generosity in this fluctuating market?
Over the 55+ years of philanthropy in our community, many donors have opted to make their donations through a Charitable Gift Annuity (CGA).
CGAs have long been a favored method for gifting, offering individuals a way to support their favorite charities AND receive a steady income for the rest of their lives.
Amid a fluctuating stock market, a fixed income stream coupled with an immediate tax deduction and partially tax-free annuity payouts are a WIN-WIN.
With the passage of Secure Act 2.0, individuals aged 70-1/2 or older can now fund a CGA with a one-time rollover from their IRA up to $50,000.
Effective January 1, 2023, charitable gift annuity rates rose to the highest they’ve been in more than a decade. An individual aged 75 will now realize a 6.6 percent rate of return and an 80-year-old will see 7.6
percent (up from 6 percent and 7 percent respectively). Rates for couples, or other 2-life annuitants, have increased as well.
Every CGA with Sun Health Foundation is a WIN supporting superior healthcare and wellness in the west Valley!

Driving FORE Superior Health Charity Golf Day
April 23, 2022
It was a fun-filled day of golf with a purpose. More than 150 people joined Sun Health Foundation to play, cheer, win prizes, and honor medical professionals in the fight against cancer.
Net proceeds supported advanced technology for cancer-fighting treatment and care at Banner Boswell Medical Center, including a robot that revolutionizes the diagnosis and treatment of lung cancer.
With appreciation to our sponsors: Banner Health, Belmontez Construction, CDW Healthcare, HILGARTWILSON,
Morrison Living, Orcutt | Winslow, The Weitz Company, and Zion & Zion. And Community Partners: ROX Media Group, JDM Partners, and Southwest Integrated Solutions.

Smart Giving Workshops
May-July and September-November 2022
These series of free educational workshops empowered participants with knowledge about how to maximize the benefits of charitable giving for you, your family, and the charities you care about.
Topics included: Taxes and Charities; Are Your Plans in Place? Don’t Leave Things to Chance; A Goal Without a Plan is Just a Wish; Make 2023 Your Best Tax Year Ever; and Have Your Cake and Eat it Too!
Sponsored by the Council of Professional Advisors and Sun Health Foundation.
The series continues. For more information about future workshops, see page 36.
This monthly series keeps growing in popularity as a trusted resource for updates in physical, mental, and fiscal health.
Host Gina Ore, Chief Philanthropy Officer for Sun Health Foundation, welcomes a different guest presenter each month to provide the latest updates in physical, mental, and fiscal health. Many of our topics are viewer driven.
In 2022, topics included: identity protection, heart health, colorectal cancer, incontinence, prostate cancer, how to talk with your doctor, managing your digital assets, the Happiness Factor, Valley Fever, and updates on healthcare services and the impact of your support.
Of the 13 coffees that took place (one topic resulted in two parts because of popular demand), a total of 455 people logged in to Zoom (from throughout the U.S. and Canada) to participate. Since the program began in 2020, a grand total of 869 participants have joined us.
As Gina likes to say at the end of every coffee: “Stay well, stay safe, and stay connected.”
These coffees empower us to do just that.

5th Annual Ice Cream Social Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center Surgical Clinic
Friday, Nov. 4, 2022
More than 200 patients and families attended this delicious event that “served” as a special time for
patients and families to reunite with physicians and staff to celebrate life and share expressions of gratitude for exceptional cancer care.
Guests “got the scoop” not only for sundaes served by physicians and staff — with their choice of toppings — but also on exciting updates thanks to community support that makes possible advancements in cancer diagnosis and treatment.
Along with the refreshing treats served by physicians and staff, the afternoon included socialization, drawings for prizes, and a photo booth with props for pictures of physicians together with patients and staff.
THRIVE Toy Drive
December 2022
The holidays were brighter for foster youth thanks to more than 200 toy donations made to Thrive Arizona by Sun Health staff and residents at Sun Health’s The Colonnade and Grandview Terrace. This generous expression of caring truly touched lives by creating hope for a positive future.
The Christmas toy drive, through Sun Health Foundation, was coordinated by Rabbi Mindie Snyder and Chaplain Joshua Rivera with the Department of Spiritual Life for Sun Health Communities.
Thrive connects with community partners to help provide the basic needs required to keep families together. They also help aged-out foster youth transition from foster care to adulthood by providing transitional housing and resources.
Pirazzi String Quartet
Dec. 13 and 14, 2022
Residents and family members at Grandview Terrace’s Health and Rehabilitation Center, and at The Colonnade’s Assisted Living and Memory Support Center, were treated to the melodic sounds of the Pirazzi String Quartet, featuring members of the Phoenix Symphony.
Audience members thoroughly enjoyed the music, with some singing along, clapping, and tapping their feet.
The musicians performed favorite holiday tunes thanks to underwriting from Sun Health Foundation. Studies have shown that music not only helps people feel happier, there are actual therapeutic benefits for those experiencing health conditions including memory loss.

Empowering Longer, Healthier, More Purposeful Lives
Community, Unity, and Generosity define the story of Sun Health
It was the 1960s when Sun City Residents volunteered to go door to door seeking support for construction of Boswell Hospital. They were passionate, dedicated and they inspired others to support the arrival of top medical care to the community. As the communities surrounding Sun City grew through the years, West Valley residents also supported the construction of Del E. Webb Hospital in Sun City West and an entire network of health and wellness services. Almost 55 years later, these services are considered among the finest in the nation.
Sun Health Foundation’s long-standing bond with the community only grew stronger when Banner Health arrived in the Northwest Valley almost 15 years ago. It was a natural partnership to continue a legacy of support for superior healthcare for residents today and for future generations.
Today, Sun Health Foundation continues to be an integral part of the Sun Health family (including Sun Health Wellness and Sun Health Communities) that champions superior health and wellbeing through philanthropy, inspired living, and wellness programs.
Sun Health is a trusted resource for education and empowerment, offering a wide range of programs including chronic disease prevention classes provided by Sun Health Wellness, and Sun Health Foundation’s Coffee with Gina & Friends and Smart Giving Workshop series.

A Spirit of Philanthropy
The spirit of philanthropy is infused in Sun Health’s culture of big hearted, thorough, and invested. This culture defines both the passion and commitment of our teams, Boards, and Committees to the health and wellbeing of our greater community, residents of the Sun Health Communities (The Colonnade, Grandview Terrace, La Loma Village, and soon to be The Orchard) and members of Sun Health At Home.
Both residents and staff of these Communities are so inspired by this spirit that they enjoy giving back to the community by participating in events and supporting one another with contributions of time, talent, treasure, and testimony. Thank you!
A Culture of Compassion
Examples of programs and special activities that enrich the lives of others in 2022
• Sometimes a dream needs a helping hand. Scholarship Programs at Grandview Terrace, The Colonnade, and La Loma Village are funded through donations by residents and offered to qualified employees who wish to further their education. (For total dollars awarded by these and all scholarships, see page 28).
• Sun Health Communities staff coordinated concerts by the Pirazzi String Quartet, featuring members of the Phoenix Symphony, for memory care residents at Grandview Terrace and The Colonnade, bringing peace and relaxation through the vital healing power of music (See page 31 for full recap)
• The Spiritual Life Teams at all three Sun Health Communities have gone above and beyond in bringing events and support to residents and staff. In just one example of support for staff, Operation Thanksgiving provided dozens of meals to those who are struggling, relieving stress for many.
• The Sun Health At Home members adopted 2 foster homes in the West Valley and provided gifts for all 20 children ranging in the ages of 5-17. Each child had a wish list and our members purchased items from that wish list, from clothes, toys, makeup, shoes.
• Sun Health Communities residents involved with performing arts groups hosted talent shows and choir performances that included staff, bringing joy and entertainment to thousands.
• Foster youth and domestic violence victims benefited from hundreds of donations by Sun Health Communities staff and residents. (For a recap of the Thrive/Foster Youth toy drive see page 31)
• Sun Health Foundation’s Employee Association has brought much needed support (totalling more than $5300) to many team members and is sure to positively impact the lives of many more to come.
The education, fellowship, and entertainment at the campuses and by Sun Health At Home are a testament to the spirit and determination of everyone together to impact people’s lives for generations to come.
Residents from The Colonnade participate in the 2022 5K for Women’s Health.

From Generation to Generation: Volunteering is a family affair
Research shows that the drive to volunteer can be intergenerational, much like family traditions and personality traits are passed along.
This holds true for several volunteers at the Sun Health Resale Shops, for whom volunteering runs in the family.
Husband and wife Keith and Margaret Rauch volunteer at the Sun Health Resale Shop in Sun City West. They love volunteering, and sometimes their shifts coincide.
Keith’s love was nourished by a family of volunteers.
“I’m from Leroy, Minnesota, a small town where everyone helps one another,” says Keith. “My parents volunteered a lot at our church and always gave an outstretched hand to neighbors. I grew up thinking that volunteering was a good thing to do.”
It wasn’t surprising then that Keith was inspired to follow in their footsteps.
While enjoying his career in education, Keith was always quick to help others in need. In particular, he remembers one colleague who was facing challenges and needed help. He didn’t hesitate.
Years later at the Sun Health Resale Shop, Keith volunteers five days a week and enjoys fixing donated items that need repair. Margaret volunteers two days a week and enjoys cleaning and pricing donated hardgoods.
“While I feel good knowing proceeds from sales of donated items support healthcare and wellness programs, I really enjoy volunteering for selfish reasons. I have a great time, get to meet a lot of people, and the staff is super.”
Keith believes he and Margaret have passed along their family tradition of a strong work ethic and joy of giving to their children. And they imagine their children will volunteer some day.
Two volunteers at the Sun Health Resale Boutique also represent two generations of giving back.
Both Peg Biermier and her daughter-in-law Billie volunteer as cashiers. Peg, who volunteers on Wednesdays, has been a volunteer for 30 years. During winters Billie would visit Peg, before eventually moving here with her husband in 2019.
“I saw how much Peg was enjoying volunteering, so I filled out an application. A lot of people visit the Boutique and it’s fun to get to know the regulars and their backgrounds when I volunteer on Mondays.”
Volunteers Margaret and Keith Rauch
34
Billie’s love of volunteering began in middle school. “One summer, I assisted Downs Syndrome children during a summer school program and at a later point at the local Boys and Girls Club,” she says. I’ve always volunteered at nonprofit organizations where the money goes to benefit others.”
Contributions of time, talent, and treasure – from volunteers, shoppers, and donations – are supporting superior healthcare and wellness services at Banner Boswell and Banner Del E. Webb medical centers, and Sun Health Wellness.
Together, all of these contributions have made an impact. Since the Resale Shops opened 33 years ago, more than $8 million has gone back to the community to support the healthcare that supports us. Generations of generosity, indeed!
Each boutique-like shop offers a remarkable selection of vintage, collectables, and specialty items – some that are unique and one-of-a-kind. Shoppers enjoy a selection of distinctive and quality items and save money too. It’s a unique shopping experience, with something new every day. Plus, all purchases are sales-tax free.
For more information about volunteering, call the Sun Health Resale Boutique in Sun City at (623) 974-2000 or the Sun Health Resale Shop in Sun City West at (623) 584-3869. To donate items, call (623) 974-1010. The Sun Health Resale Shop at 14445 RH Johnson Blvd. is operated in partnership with the Sun City West Foundation.
