Inspired to Give And lead our best life

Todd Hornback

Our summer issue of Sun Health Foundation’s GenerousLiving gives renewed meaning to the words “active lifestyle.” “My knees were bone-on-bone,” says Audrey Mulhollen, a Sun City resident who – at 90 – continues to be active and lead a full life. “Dr. (Mark) Campbell is the reason I can line dance.” Stories from people like Audrey can inspire us to live our best life and help us better understand just how vital community support is for superior health care to continue today and in the future. We invite you to read her story as well as the profile of Dr. Campbell from The CORE Institute® that includes what inspires him to serve. Talk about opening new doors to better health – be sure to read about the Generosity for Generations Campaign’s Spine Health and Orthopedics initiative that opens new doors of opportunity to support world-class advancements in medical care. And for fresh perspective on financial health, turn to our Ask the Expert column. Active. Vibrant. Inspired. These words describe both a personal lifestyle and a uniquely special community that supports health and wellness for generations. With gratitude for your continued partnership,

t was more than 50 years ago when a group of residents from Sun City formed what was to become known as Sun Health Foundation. Their sole purpose was to raise money to support health care services and practices in the West Valley because there was really nothing at that time to provide for the health care needs of area residents. This group was so successful in passing the hat that it opened Walter O. Boswell Memorial Hospital in 1970 and Del E. Webb Memorial Hospital in 1988. Fast forward to

2008 when Banner Health acquired these hospitals. Really not much has changed except the hat must be bigger because the needs are much greater. We have been so committed to this legacy of providing and supporting superior health care in the West Valley that we stayed on to partner with Banner Health in an exclusive fundraising partnership for these two hospitals. Banner Health operates them, and we stay involved to ensure they receive the funding they need.

t 90 years young, Audrey Mulhollen takes weekly line dancing classes in her active adult community at Royal Oaks. She also practices chair yoga and qi gong and maintains a busy social and travel schedule. Amsterdam, Budapest, Russia, Canada, and various parts of the U.S. have been just some of her journeys. She travels each year to Wisconsin to see her granddaughter and two great grandsons. In between her travels, she socializes with friends. How has she stayed so active? Her zest for life, love of exercise and world-class orthopedic care close to home keep her moving. She and her husband Roger moved to Sun City West from Wisconsin in 1988. Roger, a lawyer and executive with multinational manufacturer SC Johnson & Son, passed away in September 2010. Audrey recalls he was interested in anything to do with health and innovation. “We started our charitable giving shortly after we moved to Arizona,” Audrey says. ASK THE E XPERT ON FINANCIAL ACTION ITEMS

What Are the Right Questions to Ask to Ensure Your Plan is on Track?

W

e have been so fortunate that the S&P 500 Index has staged an impressive rally after nearly entering a bear market on Dec. 24, 2018. Stocks have climbed the “wall of worry” once again, but global uncertainty persists as the bull market nears its 10th anniversary. While the road to new market highs could get a little bumpy as investors deal with Brexit, tariffs and global trade concerns, we encourage investors to focus on the fundamentals of the markets and their personal goals. It is a great time to make sure your plan is on track while the markets are trading at higher levels in general. In addition, mid-year is a perfect time to review your financial strategy.

Mid-year Action Items: • Has your tolerance for risk changed? Call your advisor to review your strategy, spending, and income needs. Make course corrections as needed. • Have you considered using a portion of your required minimum distribution to give to a qualified charity? If so, now is the time to begin making those distributions so they are completed by year-end. • Review your beneficiaries – truly. Has it been more than a year since you’ve taken a look at your forms on file? Make sure they are still correct and have been processed correctly. ◊ Do you have any bank accounts, real estate, CD’s, retirement accounts, etc. that are missing beneficiaries? It’s easy for things to get lost in the shuffle. Remember, you are in control of your finances. Invest the time to review. Feel free to share this important information with your family. For more information, consult with your financial planner. To continue the tradition of Generosity for Generations* and learn more about the options to designate your preferred charitable cause, contact a Sun Health Foundation Director of Philanthropy at (623) 832-5330. *Generosity for Generations is Sun Health Foundation’s campaign to raise and invest $48 million for six initiatives envisioned to improve the West Valley’s health and wellbeing. Generosity FOR Generations SPINE HEALTH AND ORTHOPEDICS

A Sun Health Foundation Campaign

The community’s generosity will help transform the experiences of nearly 5,000 individuals and their families every year.

K

eeping our bodies in motion is key to our overall health and wellbeing. That is why advancements in orthopedic care are critical for effectively treating conditions affecting movement and independence. The Banner CORE Center for Orthopedics at Banner Del E. Webb Medical Center is a vital force for treating these ailments and keeping us active and mobile. Innovations in treatment allows for less invasive procedures and quicker recoveries. With community support for the $2-million Spine Health and Orthopedics initiative in Sun Health Foundation’s Generosity for Generations Campaign, advancements include specialized equipment for surgical suites and other service enhancements – essential resources in this fastchanging, always advancing field. Community support will provide enhanced technologies and other orthopedic service enhancements: • New portable surgery systems and surgical tables • Expanded sterilization capabilities – crucial to providing state-of-the-art procedures like bone grafts and jointreplacement implants

• New, integrated high-resolution (4K) monitors for procedure suites At every stage – from a patient’s initial evaluation to their review of options through surgery and finally inpatient and outpatient therapy – orthopedic surgeons and other health care professionals are dedicated to providing exceptional care and reaching optimal clinical outcomes. By contributing to the Campaign, our community can help patients and families experience enhanced orthopedic and spine care so they can enjoy life with greater mobility and focus on what matters.

Did You Know? • Back pain is the most common physical condition for which patients visit their doctor.* • More than 1 in 2 adults – 124 million Americans over 18 – reported a musculoskeletal medical condition. That exceeds the next two most common health conditions: circulatory conditions (such as heart disease, stroke, and hypertension) and respiratory conditions (such as emphysema and chronic asthma).*

Generosity for Generations Campaign initiatives: • Spine Health and Orthopedics ($2M) • Emergency Department and Patient Care Transformation at Banner Boswell Medical Center ($34M) • Community Health and Wellness at Sun Health ($2M) • Service Enhancements for Women and Infants at Banner Del E. Webb Medical Center ($2M) • Cancer-Fighting Treatment and Care Advancement Initiative ($2M) • Future Cardiac Initiatives and Cancer-Fighting Treatment and Care Advancement at Banner Boswell and Banner Del E. PHYSICIAN SPOTLIGHT MARK CAMPBELL, M.D. By Kristine Burnett

F

or Mark Campbell, M.D., an orthopedic surgeon with the Banner CORE Center for Orthopedics at Banner Del E. Webb Medical Center, the greatest compliment is when his patients do not return. “I love hearing what they’re doing after surgery,” he says. “That’s the fruit of my labor. The best compliment is for my patients not to come back. That’s the win.” As a former athlete, Dr. Campbell likes to win. As an orthopedic surgeon, he likes helping his patients get back to winning – whether on the golf course, pickleball court, or even the dance floor. A physician who specializes in knee, foot, and ankle surgery, Dr. Campbell says it is his job to keep people active. With Banner Del E. Webb Medical Center serving active retirees and young families alike, he has a diverse mix of patients. “We have a dual population with a clear retirement group as well as younger people, so I see the diversity of the two patient types,” Dr. Campbell explains. “This retirement community is different from other places. They don’t just want to exist for another day. They want to play and be active.” He adds, “I have a handful of families I’ve treated that include as many as three or four generations. It’s pretty amazing to see them do well.”

Summer 2019

Dr. Campbell did not always know he wanted to be a physician, but his interest in medicine was sparked at a young age. “I was in awe of my doctor when I was small,” he recalls. “A lot of people didn’t like going to the doctor, but I was intrigued by my pediatrician.” When it came time to think about his future, Dr. Campbell realized medicine would tap into the hands-on part of science that he loved. Having always been involved in athletics, orthopedics was a natural fit. “While shadowing doctors, I was most interested in the surgical side of things,” he notes. Orthopedic surgery has evolved quite a bit since Dr. Campbell’s shadowing days. Computer navigation and surgical robotics have forever changed the field. Thankfully, West Valley residents have been willing to support orthopedics. That support continues to be crucial to ensuring superior health care. As technology continues to evolve, so does the need for philanthropic support of the $2-million Spine Health and Orthopedics initiative in Sun Health Foundation’s Generosity for Generations Campaign. Among other things, funds will purchase latestgeneration technologies, including new portable surgery tables and

Mark Campbell, M.D. operating systems, expanded sterilization capabilities for bone grafting and joint replacement procedures, and high-resolution surgical monitors. “Thanks to community support through Sun Health Foundation from day one, our orthopedic services have been able to remain at the forefront,” Dr. Campbell says.
