‘Family Affair’ High quality, dependable care brings a community together Todd Hornback
We welcome you to the spring issue of GenerousLiving and begin our message with one word – family! Six letters that represent the ties that bind people, generations and, yes, even communities. Because when the health services you need are there for you, that dependability can create a true connection and “a family affair.” That’s the way one family, whose story can be found on page three, refers to their appreciation for Banner Boswell Medical Center. We invite you to read their story along with more information about the Cancer-Fighting Treatment and Care Advancement initiative in the Generosity for Generations Campaign. Then there’s the story of a thoracic surgeon and what inspires him to serve. Plus, our Ask the Expert column addresses important questions about estate planning. For more than 50 years, these hospitals have been owned by the community. Passing the torch of generosity from generation to generation is what it’s all about to ensure that the best health care and wellness services are available today and for future generations. Welcome to the family! With gratitude for your continued partnership,

I
t was more than 50 years ago when a group of residents from Sun City formed what was to become known as Sun Health Foundation. Their sole purpose was to raise money to support health care services and practices in the West Valley because there was really nothing at that time to provide for the health care needs of area residents. This group was so successful in passing the hat that it opened Walter O. Boswell Memorial Hospital in 1970 and Del E. Webb Memorial Hospital in 1988. Fast forward to
2008, when Banner Health acquired these hospitals. Really not much has changed except the hat must be bigger because the needs are much greater. We have been so committed to this legacy of providing and supporting superior health care in the West Valley that we stayed on to partner with Banner Health in an exclusive fundraising partnership for these two hospitals. Banner Health operates them, and we stay involved to ensure they receive the funding they need.
GIVING BACK BECAUSE
Family
Ralph and Marjorie Behrens By Kristine Burnett
R
alph and Marjorie Behrens knew Sun City fairly well before they moved to the area in 1991. Marjorie’s parents Earl and Letha Webb – no relation to the namesake of Banner Del E. Webb Medical Center – had called the community home since 1969. Like their friends and neighbors, the Webbs turned to Banner Boswell Medical Center for their health care needs. Thus, began what Marjorie calls “a family affair” with the two Northwest Valley hospitals. After Ralph retired as a sales account manager in Ohio, the Behrens relocated to Sun City. Since then, they have been loyal hospital supporters, giving their time, talent and treasure to help ensure superior health care is available in their community. Marjorie volunteered at Banner Boswell for several years in the early 2000s. “I started on the third floor and then worked in the surgery family waiting room,” she recalls. Proud of his wife’s commitment, Ralph shared that Marjorie logged more than 2,000 hours and was recognized by Sun Health Foundation for her volunteer service. Spring 2019
Beyond volunteering, the couple also makes memorial gifts to the hospitals in tribute to friends who have passed away. “There’s been variation in terms of where and to what programs we’ve given money, but our contributions now go to the new Emergency Department (ED) being built at Banner Boswell,” Ralph declares. A key element of Sun Health Foundation’s Generosity for Generations Campaign is a $34 million commitment to transform the ED at Banner Boswell. The Behrens know firsthand the value of having exceptional emergency care close to home. “In 2002, Marjorie made 13 trips to the Emergency Department, including the ED at Mayo Clinic, before doctors at Banner Boswell confirmed a diagnosis of Valley Fever,” Ralph says. “The tests kept coming back negative, but doctors here were finally able to figure it out.” Not only have the Behrens benefited from superior health care, but their daughter Darcy Douglas advanced her career at the former Boswell School of Nursing. Darcy, an L.P.N. at the time, relocated
to Arizona from Florida and soon after enrolled in the nursing education program. “She completed her R.N. training and later got her bachelor’s in nursing at Grand Canyon University,” Marjorie notes. “She now lives and works in Georgia.” Like so many programs and services at the medical centers, a new ED is made possible with philanthropic support from grateful and generous community members like the Behrens, who invest in health care. The Behrens’ consistent support over the years is a meaningful reminder that every gift matters and every gift makes a difference.

ASK THE E XPERTS ON ESTATE PL ANNING
When is the best time for an estate plan to be updated?
A
s an estate planning attorney, one of the most common questions we are asked is, “How often should I update my estate plan?” Unfortunately, there is no simple answer to this question. A family’s estate plan should be custom-tailored to their
specific needs; any updates are dependent on their specific situation. Beyond reviewing documents to ensure beneficiary designations are up to date, the vast majority of situations that require an estate plan update are caused by major life changes such as a death, a birth or a divorce. And with the increase in blended families, periodic reviews are essential. Should any of those major life changes occur, we recommend that clients review their documents to see how that life change has affected them. Often, an estate plan may already take care of these contingencies and doesn’t need to be updated. If, after reviewing the documents, you discover that a change needs to be made or there is uncertainty about how that life change impacts those documents, we suggest contacting an estate planning attorney to review the plan together or begin the process to create one. About the Author Michael J. McGreevy, Esq., of McGreevy Law Office, practices in Sun City, Arizona. His firm primarily focuses on estate planning. His father, James F. McGreevy, Esq. (Ret.), also practiced law in Sun City for more than 25 years until his retirement in 2015. Michael has followed in his father’s footsteps not only in his career choice but also in his involvement in the Sun City community as well as with the Sun Health Foundation.

Generosity FOR Generations A Sun Health Foundation Campaign
Every day in Arizona, an estimated 85 people are diagnosed with cancer; breast and lung cancers are among the most common. – Arizona Department of Health Services
P
atients will soon have even more power in the fight against cancer thanks to community support for the Cancer-Fighting Treatment and Care Advancement initiative. The initiative is one of six in Sun Health Foundation’s $48 million Generosity for Generations Campaign, which is a community investment to ensure superior health and wellness – not just for today but for future generations. Philanthropic support for the oncology departments at Banner Boswell and Banner Del E. Webb medical centers will fund renovation of key facilities and acquisition of state-of-the-art technology to better serve cancer patients. And, it will help patients fight back. According to Elbert Kuo, M.D., M.P.H., M.M.S., F.A.C.S., Chief of Thoracic Surgery at Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center and Associate Professor at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, surgical robots are revolutionizing the ways doctors perform surgery. “There are two main robots we’re looking to add to our suite of medical technology,” he says. “One is a surgical robot that gives us better 3D vision and allows us to move our instruments with finer detail. The second is a bronchoscopy
robot for pulmonologists that lets us reach nodules that have never been accessible before.” Our community has the power to ensure these life-giving technologies – and the best in cancer care – are available when we need them.
Cancer-Fighting Treatment and Care Advancement Initiative ($2 million) Lung Cancer Care Developments at Banner Boswell Medical Center Endoscopy is an imaging technique that enables physicians to examine the inside of the lungs and other organs by inserting and guiding a small camera. With your help, the Endoscopy Department at Banner Boswell can improve the patient experience by: • Expanding three procedural rooms: • One for thoracic and pulmonary (chest and lung) procedures. • One for interventional procedures. • One for general diagnostics and therapeutics. • Advancing endoscopic technology. • Introducing new, minimally invasive diagnostic and treatment procedures.
Breast Cancer Care Developments at Banner Del E. Webb Medical Center Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers diagnosed in Arizona, and in the U.S. new treatments, including minimally invasive stereotactic surgery, offer promising options. With your help,
Elbert Kuo, M.D. Banner Del E. Webb can: • Expand capacity to meet patient demand. • Procure a new stereotactic surgical table with 3D imaging capabilities. • Centralize medical imaging, surgical, medical and radiation services. Campaign initiatives include: • Emergency Department and Patient Care Transformation at Banner Boswell Medical Center ($34m) • Community Health and Wellness at Sun Health ($2m) • Spine Health and Orthopedics at Banner Del E. Webb Medical Center ($2m) • Service Enhancements for Women and Infants at Banner Del E. Webb Medical Center ($2m) • Future Cardiac Initiatives and CancerFighting Treatment and Care Advancement at Banner Boswell and Banner Del E. Webb medical centers ($6m)
Together, we can ensure our loved ones and neighbors have among the best life-giving health care options close to home.

PHYSICIAN SPOTLIGHT ELBERT KUO, M.D. By Kristine Burnett
I
“
’m impressed by the tight-knit nature of this community and how the people root for one another; it’s inspiring.” That’s what Elbert Kuo, M.D., M.P.H., M.M.S., F.A.C.S., Chief of Thoracic Surgery at Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center and Associate Professor at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, says distinguishes the communities surrounding Banner Boswell and Banner Del E. Webb medical centers. “They have a giving spirit, and they see value in investing in health care,” he adds. As a physician who wants to change the way lung cancer is diagnosed and treated and how thoracic surgery is performed, Dr. Kuo says philanthropic support is paramount – the primary driver in advancing care and treatment. In the last few years, lung cancer care and thoracic surgery has been redesigned in the Northwest Valley with the Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center at Banner Boswell Thoracic Surgery Clinic. According to Dr. Kuo, the average time from diagnosis to treatment for lung cancer in the U.S. is six months. “That’s unacceptable,” he says. “With support from the community through Sun Health Foundation, we’ve started programs that have taken the time from diagnosis to treatment down to four weeks.”
Spring 2019
“Someone in this country is diagnosed with lung cancer every three minutes; someone dies of it every four minutes, Dr. Kuo says. “These patients aren’t advocated for, and that’s my goal – to make sure they get the attention and care they deserve. We can make lung cancer a survivable disease.” Reaching this ambitious goal requires having the right medical training, tools and technologies. Sun Health Foundation’s Generosity for Generations Campaign includes a $2 million Cancer-Fighting Treatment and Care Advancement Initiative to further lung cancer and thoracic services at Banner Boswell Medical Center and breast cancer care and treatment at Banner Del E. Webb Medical Center. However, this is only possible with support from a passionate and philanthropic community. Equal to the passion of the generations of donors who helped make Banner Boswell and Banner Del E. Webb medical centers the exceptional institutions they are today is Dr. Kuo’s passion to change the landscape of lung cancer screening, diagnosis and treatment. That passion was ignited during medical school when he became the first student to work under his mentor, Douglas Mathisen, M.D., then Chief of Thoracic Surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital. “I spent three summers working
Elbert Kuo, M.D.
for him, and I was inspired by how he blended his technical ability and doctor-patient skills to make a profound difference and really help people,” Dr. Kuo shares. “I thought about other service lines, but that experience is really what motivated me to pursue thoracic surgery.” Fast forward to today and Dr. Kuo is now the one making a profound difference in the lives of patients.
