Sun Health Foundation Story
I
t was more than 50 years ago when a group of residents from Sun City formed what was to become known as Sun Health Foundation. Their sole purpose was to raise money to support health care services and practices in the West Valley because there was really nothing at that time to provide for the health care needs of area residents. This group was so successful in passing the hat that they opened Walter O. Boswell Memorial Hospital in 1970 and Del E. Webb Memorial
Hospital in 1988. Fast forward to 2008, when Banner Health acquired these hospitals. Really not much has changed except the hat must be bigger because the needs are much greater. We have been so committed to this legacy of providing and supporting superior health care in the West Valley that we stayed on to partner with Banner Health in an exclusive fundraising partnership for these two hospitals. Banner Health operates them, and we stay involved to ensure they receive the funding they need.
INVESTING IN
Our Vibrant Future Earl and Elizabeth “Betty” Sallander By Kristine Burnett
P
lanning is a part of life. We plan our day-to-day activities. We plan for our future. We plan for those who will carry on after we’re gone. Often, it’s in making those plans that we think about leaving our mark on the world – about the legacy we’ll leave for future generations. For Earl and Elizabeth “Betty” Sallander, planned giving offers a way for them to help ensure a healthier tomorrow while diversifying their portfolio. “We’ve always made a small donation to Sun Health Foundation each year, but when we moved to Grandview Terrace at the beginning of 2018, we looked over our financial situation,” Earl explains. “We were 85 at the time, and I had some stock that had grown tremendously for nearly 40 years. We wanted to diversify and also do something for Sun Health.” The Sallanders decided that a Charitable Gift Annuity was the best choice for them. ASK THE E XPERTS ON WAYS TO GIVE
Can a Charitable Gift Annuity be a Beneficial Investment Strategy?
B
ecause guaranteed pension income is becoming less common, many investors find a less volatile alternative to their stock portfolios, such as a Charitable Gift Annuity (CGA), is not only very appealing but also may be an appropriate investment strategy. CGAs may provide several important benefits to individuals, especially those who are looking for a steady lifetime income stream. A gift annuity is an agreement between the nonprofit organization and the donor(s) who is referred to as the annuitant.
The donor makes an irrevocable contribution to the charity and enters into an agreement to receive fixed payments for life. At the end of the annuitant’s life, the charity receives the balance of the funds. Another benefit to gift annuities can be their tax advantages. Highly appreciated stocks, especially those with low dividends, may be an excellent source to fund a gift annuity. Instead of selling the stock and paying a capital gains tax, the stock can be transferred to a gift annuity. By gifting an appreciated asset, the tax deduction may even be higher than the original cost of the stock. In most cases, the capital gains obligation is reduced or deferred, a portion of the gift can be used as a tax deduction, and a guaranteed lifetime income stream is received that is partially tax free. So far we have focused on the benefits to individuals when contributing to a gift annuity, however there are many individuals who are simply charitably inclined. And of course there is a financial benefit to outright giving. An outright gift may enhance tax deductions. We continue to believe charitable gifting is an important part of most investment plans. Generosity FOR Generations Generosity comes back to us over and over again. It moves us forward and keeps us connected, mends hearts and restores hope, knits our community and leaves an imprint for generations.
S
un Health Foundation is proud to announce the Generosity for Generations Campaign to raise and invest $48 million in philanthropic funding for these special initiatives: • Emergency Department and Patient Care Transformation ($34m) • Cancer-Fighting Treatment and Care Advancement ($2m) • Spine Health and Orthopedics ($2m) • Service Enhancements for Women and Infants ($2m) • Community Health and Wellness Program Enrichment ($2m) • Future Cardiac Care and CancerFighting Treatment and Care Advancement ($6m)
“Community support for Generosity for Generations ensures the continued availability of superior health care at these two award-winning West Valley medical centers,” explains Todd Hornback, Campaign chair and vice chair of the Sun Health Foundation Board of Trustees. “Spanning 48 months, the Campaign is vital to funding medical, structural and technological advancements to meet the expanding needs of a growing West Valley, today and for generations.”
The future of Banner Boswell Medical Center: Rendering of the transformed Emergency Department with new patient tower shell.
Banner Boswell’s Emergency Department and Patient Care Transformation ($34m) Originally built in 1970 to accommodate 30,000 patient visits annually, today Banner Boswell Medical Center’s existing Emergency Department is one of the busiest in Arizona, often running at or near capacity with 49,000 patient visits annually, which can lead to longer wait times. The 40,000-square-foot expansion will accommodate up to 65,000 patient visits each year and provide multiple enhancements to the emergency-care experience, including 33 percent more patient beds (from 42 to 56), upgraded/ additional equipment, quicker access to tests and reduced stress. The expansion also will convert the current department into a new short-term observation unit and
add shelled space for future buildout of cardiac catheterization and electrophysiology labs. The entire project is scheduled for completion in 2020. This timeframe includes the addition of a Banner Healthfunded patient-care tower shell. “The Campaign further demonstrates our pride to be a part of Banner Health’s lifechanging work,” says Todd. “The community is key in advancing their work through Sun Health Foundation. Every single one of us plays a part in making these programs possible, so they are available when we and our loved ones need them, today and for future generations.”
A different initiative will be featured in each issue. For more information, contact a Director of Philanthropy at (623) 832-5330 or visit SunHealthFoundation.org.

PHYSICIAN SPOTLIGHT HITES T. PATEL, M.D. By Kristine Burnett
F
or Hites T. Patel, M.D., medical director of Emergency Services at Banner Boswell Medical Center in Sun City, caring for the Greatest Generation is a privilege. “It’s a population with a lot of illnesses and chronic conditions, but the patients are among the most grateful, respectful and compliant,” he says. “It’s a nice community to care for, which is why physicians gravitate here and usually stick around for the long haul.” That’s proving to be the case for Dr. Patel, a board-certified emergency physician, who began working at Banner Boswell in 2006. Even as a child, Dr. Patel was passionate about science and curious about how the human body works. Realizing medicine incorporates his passions, he set his sights on becoming a doctor. The excitement of never knowing what’s next steered him toward emergency medicine. “It’s a constant challenge that requires you to think on your feet,” he says. “We don’t always have all the information about a patient’s condition, which is like putting together a puzzle without all of the pieces.” He adds, “It makes the job a rewarding challenge.” One of the things Dr. Patel particularly enjoys is seeing the almost immediate results from many of his interventions
and knowing he likely changed someone’s life in minutes. Of course, the job doesn’t come without challenges. “It’s stressful because we face constant interruptions and deal with multiple emergencies at the same time,” he says. “We must be focused and good at multitasking.” Not to be overlooked is the physical environment. “We strive to provide excellent care regardless of the facility, and the new Emergency Department will create a more efficient and comfortable environment that our community deserves.” The more than $60 million project is possible in part through charitable contributions to Sun Health Foundation’s recently launched Generosity for Generations Campaign. The Emergency Department transformation includes a $34 million commitment from Sun Health Foundation, representing the single largest investment of Campaign funds. Banner Health is investing the remaining $26 million. The transformation is also one of the community’s most pressing health care priorities. “The current Emergency Department was built to serve about 30,000 patients each year,” Dr. Patel says. “We’re actually serving upwards of 49,000 patients annually; about 85 percent of all patients admitted to the hospital come through the
Hites T. Patel, M.D.
Emergency Department.” Dr. Patel appreciates that physicians and staff were able to meet with architects to offer their insights and suggestions on layout and design. “That doesn’t always happen, and it speaks to the organization’s commitment to creating the best possible facility.” “Due to space limitations, not all of our rooms are private,” Dr. Patel says. “The new Emergency Department will feature more private rooms and treatment areas, which is particularly important for patients.” More beds, greater privacy, additional seating and separate ground-level entrances for walk-in patients and ambulances serve to better equip Emergency Department staff in caring for the expected 60,000 annual patient visits. With support from a grateful and giving community, Banner Boswell Medical Center’s new Emergency Department will be unveiled in summer 2020, just in time for the hospital’s 50th anniversary.
