When Dwain and Shirley Ehrlich were choosing whether to stay in their Sun City West home or move into a Life Plan community, they carefully weighed their options.

They have found that their new life at The Colonnade has given them everything they wanted to keep them healthy and thriving.

For Angele DeLeeuw, a different choice made sense. She wanted to remain in her home. And Sun Health at Home, our continuing care at home program, let her do just that. With Sun Health at Home, members have the option to move to a Sun Health Senior Living community if their situation changes. This provides peace of mind in the decision to join the program.

C

huck Cassada enjoyed a long and successful career in the field of finance. So when he retired, it only made sense for him to give back using his extensive experience and know-how.

He first served as a community volunteer focused on financial issues, and then decided to support Sun Health Foundation using distributions from his Individual Retirement Account (IRA).

The plan allowed Chuck to make generous donations to organizations in the Sun Cities area and, as important, kept his adjusted gross income down to avoid paying more taxes.

“It worked perfectly,” says Chuck.

Chuck has been supporting the Foundation using this financial tool for years. Today, it is easy for him to see the benefits of his giving throughout the community, from the groundbreaking work at the Banner Sun Health Research Institute targeting a cure for Alzheimer's disease, to the unique education programs at The Sun Health Center for Health & Wellbeing.

Chuck has also seen the benefits firsthand as a patient at Banner Del E. Webb Medical Center.

“The care was very professional.

The doctors and the nurses are very competent,” he says. “I was impressed.”

At age 84, Chuck has called Sun

City West his home for nearly 20 years. But before trading in Michigan’s cold for Arizona’s sunshine, Chuck and his late wife Mary enjoyed a full life together.

An Army veteran, Chuck used the G.I. bill to attend college and study business. That led to a career as a certified public accountant, controller and ultimately a finance executive. Along the way, he and Mary raised three children.

Early retirement brought the couple West, and they settled into a new desert life. For years, Chuck didn’t have much time for volunteering in the community.

His first commitment was taking care of Mary, who had multiple sclerosis.

“It was a matter of love,” says Chuck about caring for his wife during the 54 years of their married life.

The couple’s children encouraged him to get help with the caregiving, freeing him up for volunteering. Chuck spent about five years serving on the Sun City West Foundation board, helping make financial and operational decisions.

Then he took giving back a step further.

“After I retired from the board, I decided the best I could do was to do something financially,” he says.

Through a financial adviser, Chuck set up a plan to transfer annual required minimum distributions from his IRA to eligible charities, including Sun Health Foundation. Because Chuck does not need the distributions for income at this time, he said it is an easy way for him to make charitable contributions.

“Chuck is not alone,” says Pamela Gralton Kohnen, the Foundation’s senior development director. “Other residents in the community appreciate the simplicity of charitable giving through IRA distributions.”

Pamela notes that Chuck has given back in so many ways, from volunteering to attending fundraising galas to making generous monetary donations.

For Chuck, supporting Sun Health Foundation is an obvious choice given its wide range of programs and services in the community.

“I’m impressed with the work they do,” he says.

he news came as a surprise when Jeff DeLeeuw learned that his parents were packing up their belongings and moving from Illinois to Arizona in 1993. When Jeff visited his mom and dad in their Sun City West home, he could see they were clearly enjoying life after retirement.

When Jeff’s father passed away in 2007, he began to worry about his mom, Angele, who was living alone. Last year, Jeff and his mom heard about Sun Health at Home. The program seemed like a good fit to help alleviate some of the stress Jeff felt about not being nearby and allow Angele to have the freedom to age comfortably in place.

Independent living at every stage of life

Angele, now 84, was happy living in the home she had shared with her husband. She was surrounded by close friends and maintained an active lifestyle, and was intrigued when she heard about Sun Health at Home, a continuing care at home program. Angele and a friend attended a discovery seminar last fall.

“She called me, shared the information and wanted to know my thoughts,”Jeff says.

comprehensive, including the costs and benefits, and the reputation of Sun Health made a very positive impression on me.”

After meeting with Josh Freegard, the program’s membership counselor, Angele joined Sun Health at Home in December.

“I was immediately at ease knowing my mom had access to a variety of services including a wellness coordinator who would look after her and be there if something happened,” Jeff explains.

A few months later, during a phone call with his mom, Jeff noticed a change in Angele’s demeanor.

“Her circle of friends had an unfortunate bad health streak and she could no longer enjoy their company and attend activities with them,” Jeff says. “She began to feel isolated and depressed.”

Angele decided to sell her Sun City West home and move into Grandview Terrace, a Sun Health Life Plan Community, in June. “One of the benefits of Sun Health at Home is the transferability of the membership fee,” says Barbara Mason, executive director. “Once Angele decided to move to one of the Sun Health communities, we were able to make a dollar-for-dollar transfer of her initial Sun Health at Home membership fee and apply those funds toward her entrance fee at Grandview Terrace.”

“We’re able to keep members like Angele healthy and independent in whatever independent home environment they choose,” she says. In addition to enjoying her new home at Grandview Terrace, Angele decided to keep a home-care only version of her Sun Health at Home plan, known as the “Classic Plan,” which continues to provide personal wellness coordination and health-care navigation as well as in-home caregiver and support services that may be needed in the future. Now she enjoys the best of both Sun Health plans and their benefits.

Angele has enjoyed getting to know the neighbors in her new community during the last few months, and feels confident she made the right decision.

“She truly loves it,” Jeff says. “I hear a more positive, upbeat tone in her voice now that she can just walk outside and immediately be around people, which I believe is a lot better for her overall health.”

The team at Sun Health at Home is committed to involving family in the overall care of members.

“We were able to establish trust with Jeff and develop a good relationship,” Barbara says. “Not only do we serve as a voice for our members, by providing a high level of support and keeping their best interests in mind, but we feel like their family becomes part of the program, too.”

Today, Angele spends her days swimming, dancing and playing mahjong with friends.

“She is thriving,” Jeff says. “This gives me great peace of mind and helps both my mom and me sleep better at night.”

Jeff and his wife Tracy, who live in northern California, feel confident knowing Angele is in good hands, especially when they are traveling.

“The Sun Health at Home program not only makes sure that my mom is healthy and safe, but assists with other important aspects of her life,” Jeff says. “They are able to help advocate and communicate for her in regards to her medical care and insurance bills.”

fter more than 65 years of marriage, octogenarians Dwain and Shirley Ehrlich knew they were ready to take the next step after retirement.

And for Dwain, a retired school superintendent with more than 40 years of teaching experience, that meant doing his homework.

“It was time to start thinking about our future and what we were going to do,” Dwain says. “We had to make a decision: Were we going to stay in the home we built in Sun City, or were we going to move into an independent living community.”

Dwain researched and toured senior living communities around the Valley, studied actuary charts, budgeted for the future and read several books on retirement. The final decision came last year when he read the book “Being Mortal.” The author Atul Gawande, an experienced surgeon, explores the realities of aging and dying with the ultimate goal of living a healthy and good life all of your days. Group living for seniors can be a positive transition, Gawande says, because it provides quality of life to residents and helps them stay happier and healthier.

“That book helped me put things very clearly in perspective about what I felt we should do,” Dwain says. “My wife and I started talking and realized we needed to get serious.”

Eventually the couple narrowed the search down to Sun Health’s Grandview Terrace in Sun City West and another community, but then they heard about The Colonnade. After touring the community, located in Sun City Grand in Surprise in December, they put a deposit down the next day.

But there was much more involved in the Ehrlichs’ decision than simply

finances. For Dwain and Shirley, it was important for them to be able to partake in a lifestyle that would keep them healthy and thriving.

One important aspect to consider was Dwain’s physical wellbeing. While contemplating which community to choose, Dwain says each one emphasized the importance of exercise.

They found the classes and people at The Colonnade to be exceptional.

“The activities we have at The Colonnade provide for mental, physical and social wellbeing, and are just wonderful,” Dwain says. “Those are the Masterpiece Living® concepts that will help you to live a longer life.”

Since moving into The Colonnade, he and his wife regularly participate in exercise classes and “Meetup” group activities and outings.

“There’s always something going on here,” Dwain says.

“We could sit here and do these things on our own, but we find it much more fun to meet the people who are also participating.”

During more than six decades together, the Ehrlichs say they have lived a good life. They lived across the country in Kentucky, Nebraska, Wyoming, Iowa and Wisconsin, and raised five children, two of whom have passed. Together, they say they are ready for their next adventure.

“My wife and I looked at it from this standpoint: Together we have a new chapter of our life.” Dwain says. “Our new life at The Colonnade lets us meet very interesting people, and provides us with an opportunity to participate in intellectual and spiritual programs, music programs and social activities on and off the campus. We’re having a great time.”

Diabetes Prevention Program helps those with prediabetes

Statistics show need for NDPP

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Mary, JoAnn and Marilyn are not alone. The CDC notes that older adults run an increased risk for both diabetes and prediabetes, with data suggesting that half of older adults have the latter.

The CDC has also found that modest lifestyle improvements taught through the NDPP can decrease the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by half.

Moderate weight loss is goal No. 1

Exercise physiologist, certified health coach and NDPP instructor Rhonda Zonoozi, says the goal is for participants to lose 5 to 7 percent of their initial body weight by the end of six months.

“The other main focus is to build up to 150 minutes of physical activity each week,” Rhonda says, adding that the NDPP provides participants with information on healthy eating, the importance of being active and behavior modifications to help achieve these goals.

Tangible tools and support

For Marilyn, learning how to keep a food diary was one of the most useful parts of the NDPP curriculum, which consists of 16 weeks of classes and seven monthly maintenance sessions.

“I learned how to make healthy food choices, she said. “For example, instead of having a doughnut for a snack, I now will have cheese, an apple or some walnuts.”

JoAnn also found that writing down everything she ate was immensely helpful.

“Tracy Garrett, a registered dietitian and nutritionist, would then give me suggestions and write comments on how I could improve, which were very helpful,” JoAnn says.

The weekly weigh-ins also helped JoAnn stay accountable. Additionally, she enjoyed the varied topics.

“I like the way each session focused on a particular topic, like tracking our activity or heart health or tips on eating out.”

For Mary, the group support and the “feeling that we are all in this together”

fter being diagnosed with prediabetes, Mary Nielson knew it was time to get serious about changing her diet and lifestyle.

“I had already been losing weight, but I had hit a spot where it was not going any further. My hemoglobin A1c level kept coming back high, so I knew I needed to do something,” says Mary, a Sun City West resident.

Prediabetes is a condition in which blood glucose levels are higher than normal, but not high enough to be classified as diabetes. An A1c is a blood test that measures a person’s average blood glucose level.

After hearing about the National Diabetes Prevention Program (NDPP) class offered at the Sun Health Center for Health & Wellbeing, Mary knew she had found what she was looking for.

were helpful. “We would share healthy recipes and ideas on how to overcome challenges.”

By the end of the first 16 weeks, Mary, Marilyn and JoAnn had each lost 20 pounds or more and they've kept it off. At last check, Mary’s A1c level was at 5.5 (below 5.7 is considered normal). Her progress prompted her doctor to say, “I wish I could get all my patients to do that.”

Marilyn’s doctor cut the dosage on her blood pressure medication in half.

All three women report having more energy, flexibility, and better sleep thanks to the program. For JoAnn, taking part in the NDPP strengthened her resolve.

“Because of this program, I have hope that I will beat this disease, and I am now hopeful that I will win this fight,” she says.

1/2 cup dried cranberries 1 medium jalapeño pepper, seeded (if desired) and finely chopped or 1/4 teaspoon dried pepper flakes 1 1/2 tablespoons chopped fresh sage or 11/2 teaspoons dried rubbed sage 3/4 teaspoon salt

Directions

1. Heat a Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Add the pecans and dry cook for 2-3 minutes or until just beginning to brown, stirring frequently. Set aside on a separate plate.

2. Heat the 1 teaspoon of oil over medium heat. Cook the celery and onions, stirring occasionally for 8 minutes or until they just begin to get lightly brown on edges. Add the apples and cook for 4 minutes, or until tender crisp. Stir in the pecans and the remaining ingredients and cook, stirring occasionally, for 3 to 4 minutes or until the rice mixture is heated.

Cook's Note:

To cook the rice for this recipe, bring 2 1/4 cups of water to a boil in a medium saucepan. Add 1/3 cup uncooked wild rice, reduce the heat, cover, and simmer for 5 minutes. Stir in 1/2 cup uncooked brown rice, cover, and simmer 33 to 35 minutes longer or until all the rice is tender and the liquid is absorbed.

Designed especially for drivers age 50-plus, the AARP Smart Driver TM course is intended to help drivers live more independently as they age and remain safe on today’s roads.
