ife can pull us in a lot of directions. Even in retirement, there are tasks to complete and appointments to keep. With so much on our minds, it is easy to become distracted. As the holidays approach, I invite you to join me in taking time to pause, reflect and be present, savoring each moment fully.

In this issue of LiveWell, we have some tips and inspiration to guide you. Our wellness feature with Sally Charalambous, who teaches group classes on meditation, offers insights on the importance of mindfulness and meditation. Plus, you will have an opportunity to learn about the benefits of volunteering, and to consider the difference you could make for those in need when you give back to the community.

And as 2017 comes to a close, I want to thank you for reading LiveWell this year.

You will also find inspiration from our Sun Health Senior Living residents, who have paused to reflect on embracing gratitude.

They took time out to share with us the many things for which they are thankful.

And lastly, you will meet Kip MacKenzie, director of Culinary and Nutrition Services at Banner Boswell Medical Center. Kip was recently honored by the Sun Health Foundation’s Circle of Care program. Patient Robert Soohoo was so moved by the way Kip was present with him during a hospitalization that he made a contribution in Kip’s honor. When we take time to be present and mindful, we have an impact on others as well as ourselves.

or many, the holiday season is the most wonderful time of the year.

Opportunities abound for us to share our time, talent and treasures to make a difference in the lives of those in need, while also sharing precious moments with family and friends enjoying holiday meals and making memories.

Find your passion

Whether it’s serving meals to the homeless or reading books to young children, there are plenty of ways to give back, not only during the holidays but throughout the year.

Frances Kline, 71, volunteers several days a week at her church, St. Joachim and St. Anne Parish in Sun City. The Sun Health at Home member gets together with friends every Tuesday afternoon to make rosaries.

“It’s really something I enjoy. I truly feel like I am the one receiving, not giving,” Frances says.

The group, part of Our Lady’s Rosary Makers International, fashions rosaries for Catholic churches, missions and organizations. One church requests a 1,000 Frances Kline rosaries each month

from Frances’ parish. Frances is part of a group of Catholic women from various parishes in Sun City, El Mirage, Youngtown, Sun City West, Sun City Grand and Surprise.

“We make the rosaries at home, and our ministry meets once a week so we can turn in our rosaries, get more supplies, and have fun together,” she added.

“Volunteering keeps me busy and is very fulfilling,” she said. “I’ve also met some wonderful people who have become great friends.”

Seniors of all ages and abilities, including those who are homebound, can volunteer by making phone calls, writing thank you notes or assembling materials on behalf of local nonprofits in the Valley.

Health benefits of volunteering

There are many mental and physical health benefits associated with volunteering.

Research conducted by the Corporation for National and Community Service, shows that volunteers enjoy health benefits, including lower levels of anxiety and depression, loneliness and social isolation.

After his wife passed away last year, 91-year-old Tom Engelhardt realized he had more free time and began to explore volunteer opportunities. Prior to caring for his wife, Tom maintained a long history of giving back. He volunteered for a variety of nonprofit organizations assisting low-income communities.

Today, he volunteers one day a week at Banner Boswell Medical Center, greeting patients and their family members at a reception desk. This allows him not only to feel useful, but he’s able to socialize. He says that volunteer work gives him a great deal of satisfaction and joy.

“I now have a reason to get up and leave the house,” says the retired lawyer. “I’ve had the opportunity to meet and talk to many people.”

Tom, a Sun Health at Home member and Peoria resident, also volunteers at Sun Health doing office work and educating fellow Sun Health at Home members about making important life decisions.

He’s looking for even more ways to give back.

“I consider contributing to the community as a payback to living a good life,” he added.

Sun Health at Home fosters volunteerism among members

Sun Health at Home, a continuing care at home program that promotes successful aging through a focus on health and wellness, regularly provides group volunteer opportunities for members.

“We know that having our members involved in the community helps keep them healthy, mentally active and engaged,” said Barbara Mason, executive director at Sun Health at Home. “Our senior population has a storehouse of knowledge and life experience and they enjoy sharing their talents in a meaningful way.”

Community service activities are a prominent part of Sun Health at Home’s calendar of events.

“Recently, our members participated in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s in October, volunteered at the St. Mary’s Food Bank in November and are adopting a family for the holidays,” said Nicole Holtsclaw, special events coordinator for Sun Health at Home. “In addition, we are able to help connect individual members to volunteer activities that meet their personal interests.”

o-do lists, family gatherings and a calendar full of activities. During this busy time of year, it can be difficult to slow down and reflect. But isn’t it the best time to ask “What am I grateful for in my life?”

Here is what some of our residents are most thankful for this season:

When it came time to retire, Kathy set her compass west. “I wanted to dry out in Arizona,” she says.

A resident at The Colonnade for four years, she is truly thankful for the lifestyle there.

“I’m grateful for the fact that I have the finances to live here,” Kathy says. “It was important to me to have a health plan, so I don’t worry about what happens to me

in the next 10 years or so, because I will be taken care of.”

If Kathy Pebley says she is grateful for the Arizona sun, she might only be half kidding.

The former educator spent nearly four decades overseas teaching, with 32 of those years in famously cloudy and damp England.

“I’m grateful for the fact that I did that, and that I had the courage, which added up to 37 years living abroad,” she says.

After 15 years as residents of Grandview Terrace, Tony and Rosemary Saputo know exactly what they are grateful for today – their decision to move in.

“Grandview Terrace has completely met all of our

Betty Lynch needed to make a change, but also needed a little push. When it happened, it was life changing.

“I’m very grateful to the Lord, who was kind of nudging me along and telling me that I had to give up my pride and give up my great home,” she says. “It was a 3,500-square-foot home, and the cat and I didn’t need five bedrooms and three baths.”

A longtime Avondale resident, Betty had watched La Loma Village being built, and was impressed with the beautiful property and convenient location to her church and volunteer activities. “So I didn’t look any further,” she says.

When Betty suffered a stroke earlier this year, she was grateful for that nudge to move.

“I didn’t need any care,” she says, “but I was where the care was if I needed it.”

Serving up Kindness Circle of Care program honors culinary services director

brightening a patient’s day whenever – and however — he can.

That’s how he came to know patient Robert Soohoo, striking up a conversation over their shared military service and interest in Westerns. For Robert, those friendly visits helped keep loneliness at bay as he remained hospitalized. The act also spoke volumes, as Robert was surprised that someone at the director level within the hospital would take such a personal interest.

Touched by the kindness, Robert made a contribution in Kip’s honor to the Circle of Care program at Sun Health Foundation.

The program provides patients at Banner Del E. Webb or Boswell

medical centers the opportunity to say “thank you” to caring staff members. These tax-deductible gifts support a wide range of programs and services, benefiting the entire community.

“He put a human face behind the care I was given at the hospital,” Robert says. “I think the money is going to a good place to keep good people like Kip around.”

A grateful Kip says he felt a “bond” with Robert.

“Sometimes I feel as an employee of Banner your role expands, and it doesn’t just have to do with food,” he says.

One moment he’s slipping on his well-worn apron to mentor staff in the kitchen, and the next he’s stepping into a patient’s room to enhance their stay.

It would be enough for Kip to focus solely on culinary services at the busy Boswell hospital. But he sees a larger role for himself:

FOUNDATION There’s New Progressive Care in the Air at Banner Del E. Webb

Investing in Nursing Yields Healthy Dividends

Sam Merriman worked in human resources management for the state of Pennsylvania for decades, so he knows what makes for “great employees.”

One is a seasoned professional, thirsting for more knowledge. The other is a recent high school graduate, ready to begin a career.

The Sun City West resident was hospitalized on the floor of the new Progressive Care Unit at Banner Del E. Webb Medical Center, a $10.9 million project that’s a dynamic departure from the traditional hospital unit. Merriman was impressed with the sleek design, creature comforts and high-tech functionality of the new unit, but he was more wowed by the caliber of the staff.

“No one likes to go to the hospital, but if you live in this area, Banner Del E. Webb Medical Center is the place to be," Sam says.

"The people here are just outstanding. Every employee has been positive and has been trained very well.”

Two Banner Health employees, along with 48 of their coworkers, each received a $2,000 nursing scholarship for the 2017-18 school year from Sun Health Foundation to help them reach their education goals.

Simona Lucescu, a longtime nurse and current nursing manager at Banner Boswell Rehab Center, is working on a master’s degree in nursing leadership at Grand Canyon University.

That diploma will go nicely with her three bachelor’s degrees in nursing, German and English, all earned in her native country, Romania. “For me, school is very important,” she says.

“I really love medicine and helping people, so I was interested in exploring health care as a

career,” says Michael Cook, 22, a transporter at Banner Del E. Webb. When he learned about the nursing scholarships, he applied. “I was ecstatic when I heard I got it.” Today, he’s attending a fast-track nursing program, coadministered by Glendale Community College and Northern Arizona University, and will earn his bachelor’s in nursing in spring 2018.

Each of the hundreds of Banner and Sun Health employees who have received Foundationfunded nursing scholarships over the years have similar stories of how education changed their lives. “I love that this is about educating, improving and growing our people,” says Debbie Flores, CEO of Banner Boswell and Banner Del E. Webb Medical Centers. “It’s the best investment of all.”

Foundation support of Banner Sun Health Research Institute Sun Health Foundation provided $500,000 to the Banner Sun Health Research Institute (BSHRI) for its world-renowned Brain and Body Donation Program. In addition, $500,000 of support was provided for the Cleo Roberts Clinical Research Center.

These gifts were presented to Eric Reiman, M.D., executive director of the Banner Alzheimer's Institute and CEO of Banner Research, who praised the support, touting its role in enabling researchers to gain insights into a greater understanding of brain and body function in normal aging and in diseases of aging.

"The brain and body donation program is a study of the health and diseases of older adult volunteers living in metropolitan Phoenix.

We study their function during life and their organs and tissue after death. We also share the banked tissue, biomaterials and biospecimens with qualified researchers worldwide," Dr. Reiman says.

More than 3,745 individuals have been enrolled in the program, and BSHRI researchers have performed more than 1,700 autopsies since it began in 1986.

Sun Health Foundation extending ‘olive branch’ to the community Since 1988, the Banner Olive Branch Senior Center in Sun City has been a haven for Northwest Valley residents looking for a place to socialize, learn new things or just have fun.

The center was launched by Sun Health and is a godsend for older adults who need assistance with daily nutrition. Nationwide, one in 11 seniors experience hunger each day.

It’s a problem Banner Olive Branch is tackling with affordable programs such as mobilemeals, food boxes and a pantry/food bank. A home-delivered meals program, provided at no cost to those who qualify, serves hundreds of disabled and home-bound older adults five days a week.

In 2017, Sun Health Foundation continued its support of the organization it started years ago with a contribution of $85,000 for the home-delivered meal program. “This is helping us reach more people in need, and that’s a beautiful thing,” says Banner Olive Branch Senior Center director Ivy Glinski.

GENEROSITY CREATES PROGRESS Joint Letter from Ron and Debbie Twenty-eight private rooms, a functional and aesthetically pleasing design and the latest medical technology are just some of the defining features of the $10.9 million Progressive Care Unit, which opened in August on the 5th Floor, D-Tower at Banner Del E. Webb Medical Center in Sun City West.

The unit, which primarily serves patients with serious conditions that require around-the-clock cardiac monitoring, represents a fresh example of the good that has sprung from the partnership formed by Banner Health and Sun Health in 2008.

As the exclusive fundraising partner of Banner Del E. Webb and Banner Boswell medical centers, Sun Health Foundation and its donors have enabled both medical centers to keep up with latest advances in health care. This has benefited not just patients and their loved ones, but also the doctors, nurses and other health professionals entrusted to care for them.

Banner Del E. Webb Medical Center opened 30 years ago, backed by an outpouring of financial support from the community that continues to this day. In addition to financial gifts, community members have volunteered hundreds of thousands of hours to make the hospital a more friendly and healing place.

The Progressive Care Unit reflects a growing trend in the health care industry to design and build structures that contribute to the healing process for patients and improve the work flow for staff.

Research has shown that outdoor views, natural light, appealing artwork and private rooms lower patients' stress levels, reduce infection rates, lessen pain and shorten hospital stays.

Sun Health Foundation and Banner Health have committed $5.9 million to the $10.9 million project, and the two organizations are challenging community members to give what they can to make up the difference. Several people have already made a generous donation to support the Progressive Care Unit. It’s an investment that benefits all of us.

COMMUNITY WELLNESS A Gift of Health & Wellness A nurse by training, Bonnie White faced down diabetes and a challenging weight-loss goal. But she knew the road ahead would have obstacles.

To stay on course, Bonnie turned to Sun Health’s Center for Health & Wellbeing (CHW).

“Even though I had lost weight myself, I knew that I needed some help with maintenance,” Bonnie says. “Because maintenance is actually more complicated, lifestyle-wise and emotionwise. You’re changing your whole relationship with food.”

Today, Bonnie is living a healthy and active life, which came as a birthday surprise. Bonnie had already lost 100 pounds and lowered her A1C levels. “I lost half of my weight,” she says.

Then, after reading a story about CHW in Sun Health’s LiveWell magazine, Bonnie picked out the perfect birthday gift for herself. She invested in her future with nutrition and fitness packages offered through CHW.

Bonnie credits Susan Welter, registered dietitian nutritionist and certified diabetes educator, with helping her understand how to enjoy meals and give food less “power” over her life.

Bonnie is also committed to staying fit with the help of Rhonda Zonoozi, Sun Health’s exercise physiologist and health coach.

“Rhonda explains a lot about why you’re doing what you’re doing. Sun Health is really geared to the types of needs I have,” Bonnie says.

Supporting Caregivers in Their Journey Socorro Cerda cares for her 85-year-old father, diagnosed with both Parkinson’s disease and dementia. Some days, it feels like her to-do list is never ending, with meals, medications, doctor visits, personal care and activities to keep her father content. But Sun Health’s Memory Care Navigator (MCN) program helps ease the load. The program provides vital information about community programs and services for her father, Bulmaro Carranza.

“The navigator was so amazing, and made me aware of services that I didn’t know existed,” Socorro says.

The MCN program, helps patients, family members and caregivers navigate the emotional, psychological and physical effects of Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. The service is provided at no charge, and is funded through donations to Sun Health Foundation.

A social worker’s referral to MCN during her father’s hospitalization was life changing for Socorro. She was encouraged to apply for a scholarship to cover the cost of adult day care, and now her father attends twice a week. The half-day breaks give Socorro time to herself, to catch up on things around the house or enjoy crocheting.

Through MCN, Socorro also received guidance on applying for transportation, meals, personal care and other assistance for her father. Socorro is grateful for the MCN program and those who have supported it through the Foundation.

“Thank you so much. It’s been a great help,” she says.

Taking Control of Diabetes Anita Orton has lived with diabetes for two decades, but has struggled to get a handle on the disease.

“Diabetes is deceptive. You don’t feel sick on a daily basis so it’s easy to lose control and it’s easy to let things slide,” she says.

She turned to the Diabetes Self-Management Education (DSME) training at the Sun Health Center for Health & Wellbeing. The program, a benefit under Medicare and most insurance companies, offered a wealth of diabetes education, nutrition advice and more.

As important, program staff exuded a can-do attitude and offered encouragement every step of the way.

During the five-week training, Anita felt especially supported by Tracy Garrett, the Center’s diabetes program coordinator and a registered dietitian nutritionist and certified diabetes educator. Tracy’s concern and compassion, Anita says, made participants feel as though she was “investing in each of our lives.”

Anita embraced a healthier diet and lost 15 pounds. Her A1C levels went from 7.8 down to 6.9, a move in the right direction. “My doctor was ecstatic and I was ecstatic,” Anita says.

Anita calls DSME a “godsend.”

At one point, her doctor gave her a six-month ultimatum: get her diabetes under better control, or begin taking medication to control it. Anita decided to recommit to a healthier lifestyle.

Bobbie has been a fixture in Glendale since the 1970s, when she served on several boards and committees, including The Planning Commission, The Mayor’s Advisory Committee and several bond committees. Bobbie, who was chair or vice-chair of many groups, still volunteers five hours a week at City Hall. Bobbie also helps the Glendale Fire Department for events.

"I enjoy working with the staff. I have contentment, and I feel that I am doing something that helps out," Bobbie says.

Bobbie also has what she calls her “parttime job” with the La Loma Knitting Group crocheting sweaters, afghans, slippers and more for a domestic violence shelter. She volunteers between 60 to 85 hours per month as a part of the group that includes 10 to 12 residents.

s Sally Charalambous has discovered firsthand, an important key to physical, emotional and spiritual health involves a concept known as mindfulness.

Sally, a retired registered nurse, who teaches group classes on meditation for Sun Health, says mindfulness, especially as it relates to meditation, has a number of benefits. As a bonus, anyone can learn to be more mindful— it just takes some practice.

“Mindfulness is choosing to focus our attention on the here and now. It is returning our attention to whatever is going on now and accepting it,” Sally says. “With mindfulness, we are not negating the past or fearing the future; we are paying attention to the present and not being distracted.”

“Ideally, people should wait two hours after eating to meditate, and they should find a quiet place where they will not be distracted, and get into a comfortable position— preferably in a chair with a straight back instead of lying down,” she says.

During meditation, people should focus on breathing effortlessly.

Ideally, this should be done two times a day, Sally says.

“It usually takes about a month of practicing meditation before significant changes occur,” she says.

Like mindfulness, Sally says meditation requires total acceptance of whatever is given in the present moment.

“Meditation involves focusing your mind for a period of silence, and it can be done for self-improvement, or as 26 LiveWell • The Sun Health Way

There are a number of ways that meditation can help improve health, Sally says.

“In terms of our physical health, meditation can help lower our blood pressure, heart rate and cholesterol levels. It frequently results in people

needing less of their medication.

It also helps to boost the immune system Sally Charalambous and increase the health of the telomeres, an area of one’s chromosomes that can affect cell aging,” she says. “A 2005 study found that people who meditated for 40 minutes a day showed less aging in their brains.”

As for spiritual benefits, Sally says they include an increase in creativity, self-knowing and self-regulation.

Meditation can also help reduce stress levels, Sally says.

“Over the past 18 years, there have been hundreds of studies conducted on meditation by the American Medical Association, the American Psychiatric Association and others,” she says. “They have found that meditation can help with stress and anxiety, and a 2014 study found that it can be as effective as antidepressants.”

his time of year can be especially busy and stressful for many people.

“If during the holiday period, all we focus on is doing and overdoing, we can expect chaos,” Sally says. “However, we can choose differently.

There is more to life than getting and having; with meditation and mindfulness, we can focus on being and becoming.”

See the following tips for practicing mindfulness during the holidays: • During holiday meals, Sally suggests slowly relishing the food, noticing its taste, color and other sensations. She encourages us to chew and swallow leisurely and try to choose more foods that come from the earth, instead of those that are processed.

• Recall the true meaning of the holiday season as often as possible, Sally says, and instead of multitasking to get everything done, focus on completing one task at a time.

• Looking ahead to the New Year, Sally suggests forgetting about traditional resolutions and making a list of “preferences” instead. She suggests including things like, “more travel, more volunteering and having more fun.”

3/4 cup roasted, shelled pistachios, (3 ounces), coarsely chopped 3/4 cup dried cherries, or dried cranberries 1 teaspoon freshly grated orange zest 24 ounces bittersweet chocolate, finely chopped, divided

Line the bottom and sides of a jelly-roll pan or baking sheet with foil. (Take care to avoid wrinkles.) Toss pistachios with cherries (or cranberries) in a medium bowl. Divide the mixture in half; stir orange zest into 1 portion.

Melt 18 ounces chocolate in a double boiler over hot water.

(Alternatively, microwave on low in 30-second bursts.) Stir often with a rubber spatula so it melts evenly.

Remove the top pan and wipe dry (or remove the bowl from the microwave). Stir in the remaining 6 ounces chocolate, in 2 additions, until thoroughly melted and smooth.

Add the pistachio mixture containing the orange zest to the chocolate; stir to mix well. Working quickly, scrape the chocolate onto the prepared pan, spreading it to an even 3/4inch thickness with a rubber spatula. Sprinkle the remaining pistachio mixture on top; gently press it into the chocolate with your fingertips. Refrigerate, uncovered, just until set, about 20 minutes.

Invert the pan onto a large cutting board. Remove the pan and peel off the foil. Using the tip of a sharp knife, score the chocolate lengthwise with 6 parallel lines. Break bark along the score lines. Break the strips of bark into 2- to 3-inch chunks.

MEMORY CARE Helping Your Family Member with Memory Loss Enjoy the Holidays Tuesday, Dec. 5; 10 to 11 a.m.

Marty Finley, MEd, Sun Health’s Memory Care Navigator, shares how to minimize stress for yourself and your loved one with memory loss during the holidays.

Location: Center for Health & Wellbeing Dementia Caregiver Support Group Wednesdays, Dec. 6 & 20; 3 to 4 p.m.

Marty Finley, MEd, Sun Health’s Memory Care Navigator, leads this support group specifically for people caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease or any type of dementia. Registration is not required.

Location: Grandview Terrace H&R PHYSICAL FITNESS All classes held at Center for Health & Wellbeing Note: Physical fitness classes are offered in eight-class series.

Registration for a series requires 40 class credits ($40).

Chair Yoga Wednesdays – 8 to 9 a.m.; Series CY14: Dec. 6, 13, 20, 27, 2017 and Jan. 3, 10, 17 & 24, 2018 Chair yoga incorporates all of the benefits of a traditional yoga class with the added support of a chair.

Chair Yoga Plus Wednesdays – 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.; Series YR7: Dec. 6, 13, 20 & 27, 2017 and Jan. 3, 10, 17 & 24, 2018 Yoga involves paying attention to your breath, which can help you relax, feel less stressed and improve posture using both seated and standing postures. Participants must be able to stand independently.

Tai Chi Wednesdays – 11 a.m. to noon; Series TC14: Dec. 6, 13, 20 & 27, 2017 and Jan. 3, 10, 17 & 24, 2018 Tai Chi is a traditional Chinese martial art shown to improve strength and balance, and help with stress reduction and relaxation.

Strength Training for Health Fridays – 11 a.m. to noon; Series ST14: Dec. 15, 22 & 29, 2017 and Jan. 5, 12, 19, 26; Feb. 2, 2018 This low-intensity class uses bands, body weight and other items to train the upper- and lower-body muscle groups.

SAFETY AARP Smart Driver™ Course Monday, Dec. 18; 12:30 to 4:30 p.m.

Designed especially for drivers age 50-plus, the AARP Smart Driver TM course is intended to help drivers live more independently as they age and remain safe on today’s roads. Pre-registration is required. Fee is $15 for AARP members and $20 for nonmembers, payable by check only. Please bring driver’s license and check payable to AARP to the session.
