Base & Meridian Wildlife Area 7602 S Avondale Blvd, Avondale, AZ 85323 • 602.942.3000 Beginning in 1973, the Arizona Game and Fish Commission acquired approximately 200 acres of river and adjacent riparian habitat at the confluence of the Salt River and Gila River just west of the Phoenix metropolitan area. Base and Meridian Wildlife Area is a unique, urban riparian and marshland area with outstanding views over the Gila River Valley from Monument Hill. The B&M Wildlife Area provides excellent birding opportunities in riparian habitat along the Gila River. Willows and a few cottonwoods line the riverside, and the river has an excellent reed and open water habitat that suits a variety of marsh and water birdlife. Tamarisk and mesquite are also a major habitat. This site is good for water and marsh birds, raptors, and a variety of songbirds, resident and migratory alike. The Tres Rios Nature Festival takes place in the Spring each year. Directions: Take the Avondale Blvd exit at the I-10 freeway, and head south for just over 5 miles to the Baseline and Meridian Wildlife Area. Once crossing the big bridge after reaching the Avondale Blvd and Southern intersection, park south of the bridge on the east side of the road.

Monument Hill Monument Hill is located at Avondale Blvd and Baseline Rd in Avondale, AZ. Period of significance: 1850-1874. The surveying marker of the Gila and Salt River meridian is located on Monument Hill. Ever since 1851, this has been the center point used by the state to measure the land in Arizona. The federal government recognized this point for measuring the boundary between the United States and Mexico after the Mexican-American War ended. The first survey conducted in 1867 involved the first 36 miles of Arizona. Up until 1874, this was the epicenter of all surveying in Arizona for property deeds. Baseline Rd is indeed the baseline of the east-west survey line. The marker was listed in the National Register of Historic Places on October 15, 2002.

Estrella Mountain Regional Park is perched on a ridgeline where one could have witnessed the unfolding of many interesting events and lives that have been lived out in the desert landscape below. The history and lives of the area begins with the Hohokam Indian culture. This group inhabited the area from around 500 A.D. to 1450 A.D., and relied heavily on the rivers and streams of the area for its existence. Water was obviously a critical element in shaping the cultures and history of this desert environment. The Hohokam culture was based almost exclusively on irrigated agriculture, according to the Historical Atlas of Arizona. Part of the Hohokam, or later cultures, utilizing a canal system, were once located within the park boundaries of Estrella Park. Even though there has been a steady growth and expansion of facilities in the park, development is still limited to a very small portion of the park. Most of the landscape of the park today remains pristine desert, very similar in appearance to the landscape seen by the first European explorers who traveled past these mountains and foothills. These factors that have worked to resist development have preserved a very valuable resource for the Maricopa County Parks system. Here are a couple of basic safety refreshers to keep in mind when recreating outdoors: PD
• C arry a bandana in your pack. They are light-weight and can be used for numerous situations. If you are beginning to suffer from excessive heat, wet the bandana and place on the nape of the neck and/or the forehead. This will help to cool you down quickly. Seek shade under a tree or bush. • Map miles are not the same as effort miles. On good trails, hikers can go up to 2.5 MPH. On most trails, count on no more than 1 or 1.5 MPH, especially if admiring the views, cooling off under Palo Verde trees, taking pictures, etc. • Going uphill takes more time. A 1,000’ climb equals a mile of effort and adds 10 or 20 minutes. Downhill is no faster if the trail is bad. • Be wary of rattlesnakes, particularly at night and when it is relatively cool. • Carry something to signal with – a police whistle, signal mirror, and matches for a fire, a colored panel – to make you visible. • Be considerate – leave no trace. Since 1964, ISM Raceway has been the premier motorsports venue in the Southwest and was founded as an open-wheel racing mecca. On April 6-7, 2018, ISM Raceway celebrated the 25th anniversary of Mario Andretti’s final career win with a special reunion weekend for the Verizon IndyCar Series Phoenix Grand Prix. As the stars of IndyCar took over the track on Saturday night’s Phoenix Grand Prix, the weekend was filled with events celebrating Andretti as one of racing’s most iconic and renowned racing legends, as well as ISM Raceway’s rich open-wheel history. The event was highlighted by a reunion of the drivers who participated in the 1993 IndyCar race that culminated in Andretti’s last open-wheel victory, while racing for the legendary Newman/Haas Racing team. Fans were able to interact with legends of the sport such as Bobby Rahal, Lyn St. James and Arie Luyendyk Sr. in a panel discussion and autograph session.

Fall NASCAR Weekend Grand Opening
After a long, hot summer for fans of ISM Raceway, not only will NASCAR be back in the Valley of the Sun in November, but ISM Raceway will host the long-awaited Grand Opening of the $178 million modernization project. Among the many highlights of the modernization project is a completely redesigned infield Fan Zone featuring a first-of-its-kind Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series Garage placing fans face-to-face with the superstars of the sport. ISM Raceway’s start/finish line will be repositioned in Turn 2 just before the track’s well-known dogleg. Other new highlights include a new pedestrian tunnel connecting the infield to the new seating areas featuring in-seat Wi-Fi connectivity. The modernization project also includes the installation of new/ upgraded seating and the new hospitality club - Curve, above the current Turn 1 location. A new grandstand will be built alongside upgraded seats in the existing Bobby Allison Grandstand (both featuring individual chair back stadium seats with armrests) complete with modern amenities such as new escalators and elevators, additional restrooms and concessions and a redesigned DC Solar Power Pavilion conveniently located near the seating areas Now that the playoff format has been adopted by both the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series and the NASCAR XFINITY Series, Phoenix has proven to be a crucial race and perhaps the most dramatic destination in the NASCAR season. Each race during the fall Can-Am 500 weekend determines the final four contenders that will advance to compete for each series’ title the following weekend. After Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series qualifying, the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series will run under the lights on Friday, Nov. 9. On Saturday, Nov. 10, ISM Raceway will celebrate Veterans Day with the NASCAR XFINITY Series race. With several of NASCAR’s rising stars making the jump from both these series to the premier Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series, the sports next champions will all be fighting for the chance to write their name in the record books. The weekend is anchored by the Can-Am 500 on Sunday, Nov. 11. The Playoffs. The final Eliminator race. So much drama, tension and excitement packed into 312 miles. As the last few years have proven, anything can happen. Fans can’t miss out on the excitement of the grand opening weekend at ISM Raceway.
