TWO ENTREPRENEURS, K.T. Palmer and Tom Darlington, formed a partnership and acquired land known as Carefree in the 1950s. In the 1980s, they incorporated as a town, and in 1993 Thunderbird Artists began their longest running partnership of 25 years with the Carefree Cave Creek Chamber of Commerce, their volunteers and the Town of Carefree. The Town of Carefree closes its streets to host
Thunderbird Artists. Patrons love to meet the artists, enjoy exhibits of paintings, bronzes, stone, copper, clay, metal, mixed media art and sculptures, fine photography, one-of-a-kind jewelry and much more. Stop by and visit charming specialty shops, boutiques, galleries, restaurants and outdoor cafes surrounding this event, which is nestled in the natural desert with panoramic mountain views and dramatic sunsets.

GILBERT’S EARLIEST HOMESTEAD sold in 1891. Some farms were free if they homesteaded for five years and made land improvements, while others paid the government cash for land, which could be purchased for as little as 50 cents an acre. William “Bobby” Gilbert sold a right-of-way through his land to Arizona Eastern Railway. In 1910, Gilbert was becoming established, but there were no paved

streets, electricity or indoor running water/toilets. There were also no cooling devices, so people built sleeping porches onto their homes. Gilbert was a prime farming community, fueled by construction of the Roosevelt Dam, and it remained an agricultural town for many years. Known as the “Hay Capital of the World” until the late 1920s, Gilbert is now the fourthwealthiest town in Arizona.

FLORA MAE STATLER founded the City of Surprise in 1938, when it was just one square-mile of farmland. According to Statler’s daughter, her mother once commented, “She would be surprised if the town ever amounted to much.” The city prides itself as the home of the Kansas City Royals and the Texas Rangers. These Major
League Baseball teams call the Surprise Stadium home. As part of the city’s recreation campus, Surprise is also home to the Surprise Tennis and Racquet Complex (STRC). Since its opening in August 2007, the complex has received numerous awards, including being named the 2008 Outstanding Facility of the Year by the USTA.

THE SCOTTSDALE WATERFRONT is located in downtown Scottsdale, where locals and tourists gather to visit specialty shops, boutiques, restaurants and outdoor cafes. The Hohokam people engineered miles of canals across Phoenix from 500 to 1450 A.D., and diverted water from the Salt River to the their farms. Archaeologists consider this ancient canal network to be one of the most sophisticated
irrigation systems ever created, using only preindustrial technology. Named “Scottsdale in 1894 by founder Winfield Scott, the city was incorporated in 1951. Its population was 2,000 at the time, and by 2014 reached 230,512. Scottsdale Waterfront offers beautiful scenery and an ideal setting where patrons can surround themselves with renowned artists, wineries and musicians lining the banks of the water.

Thunderbird Artists feels the part they play in fundraising doesn’t hold a candle to all that the volunteers have done by donating their time and support. Volunteers are the foundation and backbone that give strength and success in making a charity’s mission a reality. Thank you to all!
