Student Accommodation 5 500 Bed Student Accommodation, Canberra Value - 51,000,000 AUD Scope - Design, Documentation, Construction Services Placed next to an early Australian mass planting of eucalyptus trees, the proposed built form consists of a series of five connected pods in a ‘pyriform’ floor plan. The sinous form enclosing an open ended courtyard space with a north facing aspect that links the pedestrian flow from the adjoining campus student accommodation. The site was previously occupied by the Fenner School Field Services Building and the 1952 Lindsay Pryor Eucalyptus plantings. The 120 eucalypts, which originally stretched over two miles are the only remnant left of the original plantings and are the most significant amenity asset on the site. The project provides 500 beds in a college format with individual student bedrooms and shared amenities including bathrooms, cooking, dining, lounging, study and other recreational facilities. The residence includes facilities that are shared with the whole university which includes a library/ study, a gathering hall, reception and associated landscaped areas. The project gross floor area is approximately 15,000m2 over 7 storeys. The Pods are connected by hinges and loosely form a ‘U-Shape’ with a principle north facing college green towards Burton & Garran Hall.

Student Accommodation 597 Bed Student Accommodation, Bouverie Street Tender Value - 50,000,000 AUD Scope - Design, Documentation, Construction Services The Bouverie Street project is the first Student Halls of Residence in Carlton by The University of Melbourne and UniLodge. From the outset this project has strived to achieve an affordibility to student’s unseen in our expanding CBD, while maintaining a high standard of inclusivity and belonging. The project has a population of 579 Students in a college style of accommodation with various shared common spaces supporting an array of differing social functions. The massing responds contextually to its immediate neighbours by use of setbacks and a vertical slot to achieve horizontal curtilage when viewed up and down the street and from Lincoln Square. This slot is also aligned with the laneway directly opposite Bouverie Street while revealing the Grade C listed heritage print press building that anchors the corner site. The northern tower form is setback to allow the heritage building to read proud from the street edge. The outer facing facades are wrapped in a darker material referencing the older darker brick heritage building dotted around the area while contrasting the blank precast facades. By contrast the inner white facade emphasises the massing break from glancing angles while bouncing light into the depths of the building. At street level, some of the day to day functions are revealed to the street through a series of double height portals while the heritage building entry and windows will be restored to their original details.

BUPA Therapy Hub Construction Value - 1,500,000 AUD Scope - Design, DD, Tender, Construction Drawings Bupa’s Therapy Hub in West Melbourne is the flagship for their longer term vision of a national network. Bupa’s key requirement was that their new Hub would not look and feel like a medical or hospital environment, but instead to be a welcoming, friendly and caring place to be for all Who spend time there – Clients, their Carers, and all the staff. Finishes, Fittings and Furniture were carefully selected to create a soft, tactile and contemporary look, yet maintaining functionality and durability. The 800m2 purpose-built facility is housed within a striking red brick, heritage-significant factory building. The large windows bathe the interiors in natural light that enhance the openness and simplicity. The main entry presents to the main street frontage of Abbotsford Street, and has ample parking on site as well as an easy Accessible drop-off point. The fit out contains a spacious Reception and Welcome Lounge where Clients and their Carers will be greeted by their Clinician on arrival. Carers are able to wait and relax whilst they enjoy a coffee and a chat at the Kitchen Table area, or plug in the laptop in the quieter work nook to get on with their day. There are 10 Treatment Rooms, including a Counselling Room and Audiology Room, and a Gym for rehab and therapy. Amenities include an Accessible WC/Shower and a new Changing Places room.

E P I L O G U E Student Project The place is the threshold between man and nature, land and the sea . The design explores its relationship between a person and place. This place is an episodic memory of a broken bridge from the past, where natural phenomenon of wind, water and the land tune in and become an orchestra of our experience. The project seeks to integrate this episodic memory on its poetic Australian landscape through the idea of a perceived home; the broken bridge of the memory is reinterpreted as a pier of Portland in Victoria. The broken bridge and pier are conceived as placeless. It is the threshold where the land and water marry together, witnessing and recording the movement of wind, wave and sound. This harmony plays its role in blurring the boundary of our perception and reality. Reality had a way of influencing the consciousness. It defines our internal state of mind and allows to create its own set of rules and strategies

Concept of the beach and broken bridge, explored in both watercolour and digital generation
Culture is our inhabitation. It is our adaptation and active engagement to a place which defines our ‘being’ in time. Conceived as a response to the broader theme of the studio to explore the notion of time in both natural and man-made physical world, this project began by contemplating the perception and memories of places we grew up; where memories were made.
The design was expanded and developed to explore this interrelationship between a person and a place on its own narrative. It responds to how these perceptive memories can physically adapt into the natural environment of Australian landscape. The culture is understood as our metaphysical response to a specific place and this design response is a rigorous intervention in its Australian natural setting.
OLD, NEW OLD Student Project
The project is a celebration of the forgotten lives; the work creates a three-dimensional object with an intense psychological dimension. It masks the face of something long forgotten to radiate new expressions, which reinvents old stories through an unexpected and new visual language.

The architecture is used as a medium to capture a moment. It traps some kind of reality to use and reuse every time you look at it. We all still look at it as if it’s real, you can see that, a part of them is still there and the other part has become something else. There is no intention to cover or to erase; it’s about feeding the other dimensions. What makes the idea work is that the old and the new feed each other. The proposal tries to identify a solution on how a place could retain its lost heritage in an urban context.

About the old mint it is more interested to use as an object and material rather than in its process. The mint captures a moment in space that is truly fascinating. It’s trapped there and it’s like you managed to cast some kind of magic spell on it to entrap some kind of reality to use and reuse every time you look at it. The design wants to create a passage for the mint to escape from their present form.
