DEQUINDRE TOWN [Residential]

Academic, Group Work Collaborators: Yibo Jiao, Yusi Zha Location: Detroit, USA 12/2016, University of Michigan Critic: Craig Borum& Claudia Wigger The project contains eight residential towers located in between Dequindre cut and Division street, two blocks away from the Eastern market in downtown Detroit. It is part of the larger urban renewal project. The design is based on the study of the historical urban fabric of the site and the surrouding area and creates a field condition of figure-and-figure, figureand-ground relationship. The eight residential towers are envisioned as self-sufficient objects within close proximity to the landform. Through maximizing the value of the vacant landscape and alienating the residential towers, the design challenges the conventional housing typology by interrupting the connection between different households and invokes multiple public events on the landform. Each tower is a vertical stack-up of one unit per floor with a dynamic view of surrounding landscape.

OPAQUE PRIVACY [Community Library]

Academic, Individual Work Location: Shanghai, China 12/2013, Tongji University Critic: Yichun Liu, Aterlier Deshaus

The process of reading can be a means of meditation, a connection of the reader to the spiritual world in the book. The design starts by posing the question of how to guarantee the privacy of reading within a large crowd of people. In response, the design proposes Opaque Privacy: to separate large reading space into small units to give privacy to each person, yet allowing communications if necessary. The library builds upon a wooden column grid with a large structural grid (6m x 6m) for public reading space on the ground floor and a denser column grid(3m x 3m) for semiprivate reading rooms on the third floor and archive space on the second floor. Curtains are used as a soft partition that blocks visual connection but allows physical access, while creating a poetic atmosphere.

HOME ABOVE MARKET [Mixed-use Residential]

Academic, Individual Work Location: Shanghai, China 12/2013, Tongji University Critic: Fangji Wang The project aims to merge the two existing markets and build a new community with a market of larger-scale at the corner of Anshan Rd. and Fushun Rd. in Yangpu District. 70% of the former residents are expected to come back afterwards.

Considering that the commonly accepted closed state of the Chinese communities is actually a special case from the global aspect, I want to make an attempt to improve the present living conditions by breaking both the horizontal and vertical boundaries and eliminating the enclosure and the confinements between up and down. Four clusters including various functions are implanted at the main entrances of the community between the ground level and the residential platform to introduce the public life to the community. Located above the ground floor, the shops that serve both the neighborhood and the community are of an intermediate state between publicity and privacy. In an attempt to introduce public life into the private residential area, the design challenges the traditional ethic of self-enclosed living pattern in China. The concept lies in creating an atmosphere of publicity and continuity with the public street system to activate the community.

JFK PRESIDENTIAL LIBRARY [Civic and Institutional]

Academic, Individual Work Location: Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA 12/2015, University of Michigan Critic: Jonathan Rule

Curative Collaborative In our attempt to represent President John F. Kennedy's legacy, we first made a timeline of events during his presidency and mapped out the most important events throughout the time period. The first stage of design is that everyone in the studio pick one artifact from the timeline, whether it be political or personal and design a exhibition room for that specific artifact. As we had 12 person in the studio, there are 12 different show rooms related to 12 artifacts of JFK's presidency, and they are: Nuclear Ban Treaty, Cuban Missile Crisis, Civil RIghts Movement, Compaign Trail, Berlin Wall, Space Race, Religion Matters, Victura, JFK Images, Jackie Kennedy, Assasination. I designed the civil rights movement showroom. The showroom features a loop path that goes around a void center in the middle. While visitors are going along the path to see images and artifacts in the loop path, they get a constantly changing view of the center space. However, the center space can never be reached or accessed. It indicates that true civil rights haven't been fully reached thus are fully "accessible".

36

12 Exhibition Rooms: Artifacts of John F. Kennedy's Presidential Legacy

Individual Design The Second stage of design is for each student to develop a concept to organize the 12 exhibition rooms into a presidential library. The way I chose to organize the room is to divide the 12 artifacts into two categories: political and personal as shown in the diagrams above. Political artifacts are also time related, and personal are non-time related.

37

Organization of JFK Presidential Legacy

The two categories are incorporated into the building as "solid" and the rest of the space is "void". Visitors encounter political events first(organized according to time order) and then personal events. The aim is to represent the president not only as a political leader of the United States and the world, but also a human being.

MARTIAN EMBASSY IN BARCELONA CULTURAL CENTER FOR THE EXTRATERRESTRIAL

[Thesis|Institution] Academic, Individual Work Location: Barcelona, Spain 04/2017, University of Michigan Critic: John Mcmorrough

The project begins with looking at city making through movie study of Logan’s Run about how urban typologies organization, environment and density represent the society’s culture and how city making inform the architecture where the society resides. Inspired by Logan’s Run, I developed the idea of designing a Martian Embassy as a representation of Martian Culture. In the hundred years since the first group of people landed on Mars and experimented living on the red planet, mankind has been able to construct their permanent habitat on Mars and embarked on a new civilization of extraterrestrial life as the “Martians”. A whole new nation has been established with settlers from United States, Europe, Asia and etc. In 2197, the embassy of Mars exists among major cities in the world. In the thesis, we are looking at the Mars embassy in Barcelona, city of spectacular and drama-a perfect ground of fantasy. The Mars Embassy emerges as a new type of architecture on earth that connects the nation of Mars with earth as well as promotes Martian culture by preparing and educating those who will travel to Mars among which are the future immigrants. What the embassy intends to represent is not the strange alien world of the distant planet Mars, but what we have in our human imagination of that planet and its supposed life forms. The embassy speaks directly to the fantastic dream world of imagination. In contact with “the other” projected by pure human fantasy, men are able to perceive their earthly living better. The embassy is a unique observatory for people to rise above their existence and embrace their fantasy. The Mars Embassy prepares people both physically and intellectually to go to Mars: “Physically” meaning to get people used to the environment on Mars such as reduced gravity, different daynight cycles and sun exposure. It provides training for people to obtain basic life skills for living on Mars. “Intellectually” meaning to educate people on Martian culture, the society, climate, new language, trade and diplomatic regulations and etc.

PALM SPRINGS RESIDENCE [single-family house]

SD& DD with Booth Hansen Architects Location: Palm Springs, California 2/2018

The design of the house features a field of condition of white boxes on the site, featuring a living room, kitchen and dinning, guest bedroom, garage, master suite, casita (guest house) and a family house. The main house sits 5' above the guess living area, with each volumn connected through the central gallery of art collections- also served as main circulation space. The design is oritented to optimize the views from every cornor of the house and bring nature into living. In Palm Springs California, the essence of living centers around kitchen and dinning. The dining and kitchen box is placed in the center with a drammatic view looking at the pool and the southeast mountain views. Despite its private nature, the organization of the house is an exhinition of living in a way that a public musuem operates.

Nanhai Cultural Center [Professional Competiton] Professional work with Schimdt Hammer Lassen Architecs Location: Guangzhou, China 6/2016

The Nanhai Cultural Center sits in the heart of the south Chinese city of Foshan. Located 45km West of Guangzhou, where the city is aiming to create a combination of Library, Arts, Education and Cultural performance space in the heart of Foshan’s existing Thousand Lantern Lake Park. The project takes form in five cystal shaped marble volums that connects together to form an iconic image representing the culture value of the city. The compostion of the buildings also creates a shaded open park that hosts multiple events.

Vanke Office Renovation [Professional Competiton] Professional work with Schimdt Hammer Lassen Architecs Location: Guangzhou, China 6/2016

Existing

Proposed

The renovation of the SLP building is conceived as a micro-campus: a proposal to combine the interdisciplinary focus of a university campus with the intensity and culture of a startup incubator. With its unique public places and meeting points, as well as zones for focused research and work, the campus provides an excellent model for the contemporary workplace. The new culture of work is one of collaboration, flexibility, openness, and exhibition. Work, lifestyle, and play have begun to mix together, forming the need for a workplace that can act as a meeting point and social space as well as a workspace. Our design will provide a platform in which this kind of workplace can thrive. Public spaces at different scales provide casual meeting spaces for different size groups. Retail and office spaces share the series of large public spaces, providing he mix between lifestyle, work, and social life that modern companies look for in an office space.

80

The current atrium does not bring enough light for high quality office space, so an extensive intervention is neccesary to provide the neccesary light and openness

Existing Building

Expanding the atrium into a larger opening will improve lighting conditions, but without providing a clear entrance location and space divisions. Carving an atrium from the street facade will provide an exciting facade and clear main entrance

Our proposal is to use the same removed area to create a series of three smaller atriums: two that respond to the existing neighbouring buildings, and one that opens to the street

The building is divided into three clusters. These clusters can be leased as large individual units, or subdivided into smaller offices for lease

Three ‘penthouses’ are placed on top of each space cluster, providing ultra-high quality office environments that can be rented separately, or linked to offices below. Private terraces are added on the roof for the penthouse offices.
