Very handy and Suitable Bicycle Racks for Cars
Are you getting fed up with the aggravation of trying to cram a bike into the car? A bike racks for cars not only gets rid of this headache, but it also frees up a bunch of room in the car.
There are various types of bicycle racks for cars, described here: Roof Racks If you already have a standard roof rack on your car, you can get a bike rack that attaches to it. If you don't, you can fit a permanent bicycle rack by drilling holes in your roof. Or you can mount a standard rack for hauling generalized stuff and then get a bike rack that will fit it, which gives you greater flexibility in carrying things but requires that you take off the bike rack on and off. One more alternative is to get a removable roof rack with mounting feet that attaches to your car's door frames or rain gutters. You can purchase them for any specific make and model of car. Roof racks can carry more bicycles than can other types, and bikes on them are harder for thieves to steal. But roof racks generate the most wind drag, which lowers your gas mileage. They also generate the most noise and are normally the hardest to install and use.
Strap-on Trunk Racks Trunk racks have straps that can attach up to two or three bikes onto your bumper, trunk or hatchback. The bike frames sit upon support arms that are generally padded or plastic-coated. These fit a wide variety of vehicles, so they’re superb if you occasionally rent a car for trips or if you plan to use the rack for more than one vehicle. These are simple to store and to lift bikes onto. The drawbacks of these are several. They’re the most liable to damage your vehicle and to get bicycle tyres stolen from. You can’t open the trunk when you have one of these on it. You also need to occasionally check the straps to make sure they aren’t fraying or working loose. Tandem bikes usually can’t be carried on most types of trunk racks. CycleClothingXpert.com ©2011
Hitch Racks Because a hitch rack attaches to a trailer hitch, it's less prone to harm a car than a trunk hitch is. With some of these racks, the bicycles have to be buckled to the cycle carriers, while with others secure the bicycles in mounting "trays." It’s easy to install a hitch rack; simply slide it onto your hitch. It’s also easy to lift and secure the bikes onto the rack. A further advantage with some of these is that you don’t have to take the bike wheels off. However, some of these racks allow the bikes to scratch each other if you don’t take extra precautions to guard against this. Others are tricky for locking your bikes onto. Another disadvantage is that they block the driver’s view out of the back window.
. A spare tire bicycle rack is made for cars that can carry a spare tire on the rear. These have arms that collapse or fold down when you aren’t carrying a bike. Some of these can only hold one bike, others two. They also make special racks for trucks or for using within vans or SUVs.
