The benefits of Cycling Jerseys

Why do I wear a cycling jersey? A lot of people ask me that, wondering why I don’t just wear standard clothes when I ride my bike. Standard clothing is okay for short, casual rides. But if you’re planning to get more serious about the sport, whether you'd like to race, ride in long tours or ride for serious exercise, you should seriously contemplate buying a good cycling and running tights. Normal attire doesn’t hug your body the way a cycling jersey does, so it flaps in the wind, often causing it to chafe your skin. A real cycling jersey, on the other hand, hugs your body, eliminating flapping and decreasing wind resistance, increasing your efficiency. Standard attire retains dampness. When the weather is hot, this makes you sweaty, clammy and uncomfortable. And when it’s cool outside, moist clothing makes you colder and can lead to hypothermia. Cycling jerseys are designed to draw moisture away from your body, exposing it to the outer air so that it can evaporate. This keeps you dry and comfortable in both hot weather and cool. Believe me, it makes a big difference. Cycling jerseys have a lot of other advantages over regular bicycle tyres clothing, as they're designed with bike riding in mind. The shoulders have a wider cut to allow for extra comfort when your arms are in a forward position normal for riding. The sleeves, also, are specially shaped for a forward lean. Cycling jerseys typically have reflective areas to boost your visibility to motorists. Another feature of cycling jerseys is that they’re extra long in the back so that your lower back is never exposed when you’re bent over in a rider’s crouch. And bike jerseys are stretchable, so they take on your body shape after you’ve started wearing them.

Any pockets on the jersey are set on the back panel because front pockets are apt to spill when you bend over. On men's jerseys, the zippers are occasionally long so that the jersey can be opened wide in hot weather. Jerseys come in a wide variety of styles and colors; the most commonly used materials are polyester, nylon, cotton and wool. Cotton looks great; and as long as it stays dry, it’s very comfortable. But it doesn’t wick moisture away well, so you can get clammy wearing it when you’re sweating. Nylon jerseys shimano shoes are a good blend of microfiber and spandex. This fabric is known for its remarkable ability to absorb dampness, keeping you cool and comfortable. Nylon is rugged but doesn’t hold dyes well, so its color fades with time. Polyester is similar to nylon and performs even a little better than nylon for moisture management, because polyester is more hydrophobic. Nylon threads absorb more water than polyester, so nylon will feel colder when it's damp and will stay wet longer, which impedes its breathability. But Polyester is less durable and retains more odors than nylon. Many cyclists used to consider wool too abrasive to wear, but the new merino wool jerseys are comfortable and soft. They are nonallergenic and have better wicking properties than the synthetic materials. They also don't get as stinky when you ride as synthetic jerseys, but they're higher priced and don't shed the wind as well.
