STUDIO BRIEF: Building the Civic PROJECT: Creekside Discovery Centre
This project is a celebration of some of Deptford’s longstanding community networks, creative talents and a rich Heritage The intention is to take you on, an immersive journey through Deptford and get a sense of the urban and social issues plaguing the area at the moment. Deptford is a goldmine, it is the home of a vibrant, diverse, resourceful population,a head spinning mix of cultures and traditions. against its own will, this vibrantness of the area offers a series of opportunities for regeneration projects which eats away at the identity and urban fabric of the area. In this project, I analyse the existing issues and conditions on and around Deptford to try to pick out key opportunities and potentials for the site. My project focuses on four main user groups the creatives, youth, the conservationists and the visitors of Deptford - I have chosen to focus on these demographics based on my research as currently, the site does not offer a space for them to adequately and safely belong or work. This project, therefore, aims to provide a much needed civic hub to Deptford that offers a range of educational, leisure, entertainment & social programmes in order to boost the potential of the targeted user groups, in order to boost social cohesion within Deptford.

community centre, including an amalgamation of key features such as learning classrooms, lounging and indoor art studio spaces, museum and art gallery space, a civic cafe, an outdoor terrace and a garden.
It is located within the area of creekside the current hotspot for creative individuals considered a key part of Deptford’s identity however has been sidelined due to the amount of social activity generated on the highstreet. The proposal replaces a decaying building and aims to reunite these ostracised and isolated users; to offer a new way of creating local opportunities, connecting with the urban landscape, celebrating the inconsistencies, and creating new spaces and programmes to trigger collective city hacking, pride in one’s heritage, skill sharing and an architecture that disrupt the homogeneity of the site with a colourful timber and polycarbonate structure - a ‘beacon’ on the urban front that celebrates craft and human scale.
