the pythian The renovation of the historic Pythian Temple is an adaptive reuse of the existing historic building for mixed use with design goals aiming to achieve a Higgens-era cachet with contemporary flavor. The scope includes commercial space, 69 mixed-income residential units, a roof deck, client offices, event spaces, a jazz bar, and public market.

WOVEN RUINS:

reclaiming vacated naval barracks with integrated native ecology

ABSTRACT Cultural Identity and Native Environments Urban ruins of Twentieth Century federal initiatives testify how built environments effect cultural identity. With 1,500,000 squarefeet of lost potential, New Orleans' derelict Naval Command Center contributes nothing but a punctured urban fabric to thousands of local residents. Within this context, a separation between built and natural environments disables all dialogue. Through a multi-layered

10

approach to design, this thesis looks to identify how renewed relationships with forgotten native ecologies can reconnect the edge of New Orleans to an open network of community spaces.

Reclaiming an Urban Ruin Using the Naval Command Center as the vehicle for reclaiming lost cultural value, large areas of an existing framework are carved away, allowing new public access to freely pierce the site, resulting in newly established connections between the Bywater neighborhood and the Mississippi river beyond. Both a reduction of the built environment and reintroduction of native plant species encourages dialogue between natural and built environments, refreshing the

N E W O R L E A N S TA N Z A K A D E M I E D A N C E S C H O O L The design for a dance school + theater is an elaboration of the romantic flirtation between architecture and dance movement, the design solution utilized a massing technique inspired by three classical ballet movements; pas de deux, allegro en l'air, and the chasse. Through these movements, a play between dance enthusiast and dancer takes place within

MONTEPULCIANO VISITOR CENTER In the Tuscan wine country, atop the hilltop town of Montepulciano, sits the town's main gathering space, the Piazza Grande. O C T S H E N Z H E N B AY The design objective of a new urban village for young professionals in Shenzhen, China was to instill a sense of local culture while designing entirely contemporary structures. A village of 26 individual restaurants, the project evokes a gradient of contemporary to more traditional design elements as it nears the lake to the west. The development includes
