RHS Students Will Graduate From College Before High School By Brian Lee Chandler Cunningham, a student of Raytown High School, is one of three students who will receive their Associate of Arts Degree on May 14, 2015, from the Metropolitan Community College Blue River’s Trailblazer Collegiate Academy before they actually graduate from high school five days later on May 19. The program is designed to push highly motivated high school students further academically and expose them to a wider range of advanced level classes, putting them on a fast track toward a college degree. The program is still in its infancy and this year marks its first graduating class. At present, five students are enrolled in the MCC program, three from RHS and two at RSHS. Of those, the three from
Chandler Cunningham in her college graduation robe RHS have completed the program. It is very difficult to qualify for enrollment in the program as students must not just have a 3.00 or higher GPA, bt pass college entrance exams, and prove they can read and write at the
college level. Students like Chandler had to get a teacher’s recommendation and write an essay as well to get selected into the program. Assistant Superintendent of the Raytown School District Dr. Brian Huff relates, “It is a very difficult program. Quite a few students have signed up but have not been able to finish due to difficulty, time-consumption or other extra-curricular activities.” Chandler looks to attend Lincoln University in Jefferson City this fall majoring in Biology Pre-Med/Sports Medicine. Her father, Mark, says, “Chandler is a hard worker and wants to be challenged. She is driven.” Chandler has chosen to pursue physical therapy or medical school if possible because she is fan of sports, everything from baseball, football to badminton

Rainy 1day20k Was Successful For The Boy Scouts
Thanks to our community supporters, eight Boy Scout troops, and the Raytown Rotarians, we were able to collect 12,181 items of food for the pantry. All of the scouts worked hard even through the torrential downpour. Although we didn’t quite meet our goal of 20,000 items, we know that 12k on a bad day means an easy 20k on a sunny day. We are all looking forward to meeting that goal at our next drive this October.
Westridge Gardens Rehabilitation & Health Care Center Earns National Recognition Westridge Gardens Rehabilitation & Health Care Center — owned and operated by Tutera Senior Living & Health Care — has been recognized by U.S. News & World Report on its
a program run by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, the federal agency that sets and enforces standards for nursing homes. Each year, U.S. News & World Report awards a “Best Nursing Homes” designation to facilities that earned the agency’s highest overall rating of five stars for performance
lies.” Westridge Gardens’ profile on the U.S. News & World Report website now displays a “Best Nursing Homes” badge to rec-
annual “Best Nursing Homes 2015” list. The prestigious recognition marks the community’s third consecutive year to earn a five-star rating for its consistently high standard of quality care. Westridge Gardens is a 120-bed skilled nursing facility located in Raytown, a suburb of Kansas City, Mo. To qualify, Westridge Gardens Rehabilitation & Health Care Center had to earn an overall five-star quality rating from Nursing Home Compare, in three categories: state-conducted health inspections, how much time nurses spend with residents, and the quality of medical care. “This national recognition is a tremendous honor,” said Joe Tutera, CEO of Tutera Group. “It reflects the intensive, daily dedication of the entire staff at Westridge Gardens. They continue to raise the bar in delivering Tutera’s commitment to consistent, quality care that meets the individualized needs of our residents and their fami-
ognize their status as one of America’s best nursing homes. Only 22 percent of all nursing homes in Missouri earned an overall five-star rating. Westridge Gardens’ record of success also includes being recognized locally as the “Business of the Year” by the Raytown Chamber of Commerce in 2013.

Volunteers Dig New Life Into Rice Gardens The garden plots at the Rice-Tremonti Home are being restored and replanted this spring, thanks in large part to a couple of new member volunteers – David Wilson of Raytown and Linda Thomas of Liberty. Dave is heading up a new effort to create a vegetable garden in back and Linda has recently renovated the James D. “Jay” Coffer Memorial Garden. David Wilson says that the vegetable garden will be named the “Sophie White Garden and Orchard” in honor of “Aunt” Sophie White, the African-American woman who lived in the slave cabin from 1850-1896, first as a slave and finally as a freed woman who continued to work for the Coffee Rice family. “We are setting up a garden club to maintain the garden and orchard,” David said.
The Jay Coffer garden is back in shape
Charlene Farrell tills the soil around a blackberry bush in the Sophie White Garden The club will explore ways to grow “heirloom” varieties of vegetables, herbs and native flowers and his-
torically significant fruit trees that Sophie might have grown, preserved and possibly have sold to westward-
bound travelers. “We will also explore ways to preserve the summer’s harvest, so the club
will be valuable for anyone wanting to learn more about food preservation,” David said. “In addition to garden and orchard information, we will also explore our local history and the significance of our honored citizen to the trail and its travelers.” And thanks to Linda Thomas, a commercial landscape designer and certified Master Gardener, the Jay Coffer Memorial Garden at
our very visible corner at Blue Ridge Blvd. and 66th St. has been renovated. The prairie garden had overgrown, but now it has been brought back under control. Linda has devoted several weekends last fall and this spring to bringing the garden back. It should be putting on a great show of irises in May. Thanks Linda and Dave for your efforts; they are much appreciated.

American Royal World Series Of BBQ Is Headed To Raytown’s Backyard, Arrowhead Stadium The announcement came Tuesday morning at the Truman Sports Complex. “Voter-approved renovations have clearly made the Truman Sports Complex an attractive venue for many types of events. I am thrilled the American Royal Barbecue, a unique and iconic event, is staying in Jackson County,” Jackson County Executive Mike Sanders said. The contest that is considered the season’s grand finale for teams in the competitive barbecue circuit runs October 1-4. The livestock show and other American Royal events will continue to be held in the West Bottoms. “The American Royal is the crown jewel of the KCBS Sanctioned Contest Network.
Kansas City has earned its reputation at the epicenter of the BBQ universe, and this union will only reinforce that reputation,” said Carolyn Wells, co-founder and executive director , Kansas City Barbeque Society. It began 36 years ago in the parking lot of the Golden Ox Restaurant. The competition has grown every year to become the world’s largest, drawing nearly 50,000 people and competitors from all over the world. It attracts both world-renowned pitmasters and backyard barbecue enthusiasts. “We’ve enjoyed many great years in the West Bottoms. However, to continue to enhance the American Royal’s World Series of Bar-
becue for all competitors and patrons, we must go,” said John Mitchell, Jr., chairman, American Royal. “We couldn’t be more excited to partner with Arrowhead Stadium at the Truman Sports Complex.” Mitchell said the change to Arrowhead’s stadium facilities will offer a more spacious environment and allow the American Royal to elevate the experience for competitive teams, creating a better experience for everyone. “Ultimately it comes down to this: The stars of the game deserve a venue as impressive as their talents,” Mitchell said. And the move fuels the America Royal’s mission, Mitchell said.
“It’s about providing an exceptional Kansas City barbecue experience that promotes agrarian values, education in agriculture and scholarship opportunities for kids,” he said. In 2014, the Royal was able to give $1.4 million in
scholarship and educational awards. “We are continuing to create a sports and entertainment destination for fans of all ages, interests and backgrounds through our Arrowhead Events business ,” said Mark Donovan, presi-
dent of Kansas City Chiefs. “There’s no event like the American Royal barbecue competition. There’s nothing like the tailgating experience at Arrowhead on gameday. Combining the best barbecue event and the best tailgating in Kansas City was an easy decision and we are really excited to work with the American Royal.” The move has already garnered approval from sponsors and barbecue community. “We’ve been looking for ways to expand for years,” said Mariner Kemper, former American Royal chairman and CEO of UMB. “This pairing of Kansas City icons can only be beneficial for all concerned.”

Jason Offutt As I’m writing this, my sister Jodie has been dead for only a few hours. She was 55. I could make this an antismoking rant, and considering smoking-induced lung cancer has claimed three women in my family – my grandmother, my mother, now my oldest sister – it would be easy. But I won’t. Smokers know the risk. It would be like me telling Moe not to poke Curly in the eyes; he’s going to do it anyway. And, unlike lung cancer, even after 80 years, Moe poking Curly in the eyes is still funny. Instead, this is about family. I was born the youngest of three children, and at five and six years younger than my sisters, I was a horrendous pain. Jodie was the oldest, a stoic sort of person even as a child. Jana followed; she always seemed to put the best face on any situation. My favorite family picture is a professional photograph of my disheveled parents with the three of us. Dad the farmer uncomfortable in a suit, Mom in a nice skirt, Jana smiled blissfully, me (a baby) cried, and Jodie stared at the photographer like she wanted to hurt him. That one photograph taken in 1965 summed up perfectly our normal/strange nuclear family for the rest of our lives. Well, the rest of some of our lives. Our father died in 2002 of a heart attack; he was 65. Since his father died of a heart attack at the age of 65, I told my soon-to-be wife this proved my birth certificate had an expiration date. She didn’t think it was very funny. Our mother, 73, died in 2008. Although my dad looked old (farming will do that to you), he was still too young to go. Mom? Well, she was more active than I am right now. She shouldn’t have been ready. But a 55-year-old has no business checking out. None. Take a few breaths. No smoking rant. Just think of

More Conversations With Johnny Carson Part IV
A Life Of Work And Sacrifice Moe poking Curly in the eyes. Jodie worked throughout high school, part of the time at the local Orrick, Missouri, hangout the Bearcat Den, with it’s burgers and fries, and lines of Little League Baseball players waiting for chocolate malts after the game. Work would be a theme for her life. She was married, and divorced, and married and divorced, and … Oh, let’s just call that the Offutt Curse. That and high blood pressure. My sister had two children and she worked, taking as much overtime as her job at Hallmark Cards would provide. Her kids took precedent over her wants, and even when they left the house, she wanted to take care of them. She did. All that overtime helped. Jodie told me she had cancer in April 2013. Colon cancer; just like Mom. A month later, she said the doctors found lung cancer and gave her six months to live. Just like Mom. She held on for two years, all but three or four months of that I couldn’t really tell she was sick. Thin, but not sick. She later confessed to me she was working hard to make sure the family didn’t know how sick she felt. Always working. She moved in with her son and his wife in the summer of 2014. Five months later my sister was diagnosed with a brain tumor, and was confined to a hospital bed set up in the front room of my nephew’s house. She could only say a few words at a time. When my wife and I asked my nephew what we could do financially to help, he said with an honest smile, “Thanks, but no. She took care of me, now I’m taking care of her.” And he did. She raised her children well. Now there’s today, and my sister is gone. I liken this feeling to being away from home for a long time, and coming back to find everything’s changed, wrong. I know I’m not alone in this. Losing a sibling happens all the time. It just sucks when it happens to you. Good-bye, sis. I love you. A native of Missouri, Jason currently teaches journalism at Northwest Missouri State University and has earned many humor writer awards throughout his career. His racy first novel, “A Funeral Story,” is available at amazon. com.

JOHNNY CARSON
B.B. KING
By George Michaud
RAY CHARLES
PEARL BAILEY
BUDDY HACKETT
DON RICKLES
Johnny William Carson was born on January 25, 1925 in Corning, Iowa. It wasn’t until the 1980’s that People Magazine talked him into a trip down memory lane following him back to his roots, visiting his house, his hometown, his schools and grade teachers, and even where he played as a child. All the while, driving his old car he had in High School. That feature on the front cover of PEOPLE really established Johnny as “the boy next door” type of guy, as Stan Irwin put it. By the latter half of the 1970’s Johnny was the highest paid television entertainer of all time. This didn’t include his nightclub appearances that Stan Irwin booked him into at the Sahara, Caesar’s Palace and private events. He eventually sold his famous Malibu home to John McEnroe. The only stipulation for the sale was for McEnroe to give Johnny six professional lessons, which he got! Johnny received six Emmy Awards and in 1985 The Peabody Award, a Governor’s Award and in 1987 was inducted in to the Television Academy Hall of Fame. In 1992 he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom and in 1993 a Kennedy Center Honor. A little trivia most don’t know; The theme song played on every single “Tonight Show” was written by
Paul Anka, but Anka gave it lyrics and called it “Johnny’s Theme”. But when Johnny took over The Tonight Show, renamed it “It’s Only Love” and rewrote its lyrics, claiming 50% of the song’s performance royalties. The theme was used from the very first “Tonight Show, Starring Johnny Carson” right up to his very last show on May 22nd, 1992. This gave Anka and Carson tremendous royalty fees for thirty years. A smart move via the suggestion of Stan Irwin, which Johnny told me about between shows that first Friday night at the Sahara. So many things Stan Irwin did in the background, not only for Johnny Carson, but other celebrities he handled such as Pearl Bailey, Pat Morita, Gavin McCloud, Don Rickles, Buddy Hackett and dozens of others, were never mentioned in the press nor did Stan ever brag about them. I just couldn’t understand why Stan didn’t get more recognition for all his contributions to these celebrities. I even requested friends from The Associated Press, USA Today, LIFE, PEOPLE and others to interview Stan. They agreed, but Stan but refused every one of them. Stan always said to me; “The limelight is for our celebrities and we just stay in the background and take care of business to allow them freedom to create”. And, that is exactly what he did all the decades he was a personal manager. After the first show was over with, Stan, Johnny and I went back to his dressing room and the first thing Johnny wanted was his cigarette and a drink of scotch and soda to sit back and relax for the next fifteen minutes or so. There were celebrities waiting outside to come in and visit as well as a few special guests waiting for his autograph. Stan stood

Former Raytown Karate Instructor Faces Federal Charges For Possessing Child Pornography A former area karate school instructor is facing federal charges for having voluminous amounts of child pornography. A grand jury indicted 36-year-old Jered S. Faulkner last Tuesday on four felony counts. He was arrested Friday at his Raytown home. Federal prosecutors requested that he be detained without bail. According to court documents, Faulkner allegedly possessed more than 1,000 images and video files of suspected child pornography on his computer. Two images of concern had been taken with his cellphone in July 2014 and downloaded on his computer, The documents state one
image was of a girl who appeared to be about 7 years old seated at desk in an office area. The second image shows the child with her shorts pulled down to her
thighs with an “adult male hand” pulling her underwear aside. Investigators discovered that the child was a prior student at a karate studio
where Faulkner worked at the time. Court documents don’t name the studio. Faulkner is scheduled to appear in federal court at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Producer’s Corner continued from page 4 by the door and greeted everyone who came in and sat them down. Johnny was the perfect host, joking around making sure everyone was happy, with Stan throwing in a funny every now and then. As I started to give an answer, he was way ahead of me and said, “Throw it out, here take mine”. Then it was my turn to take a stab at some humor,

“Where did that come from? The Salvation Army downtown. No, this is one of your suits from when you were 20 years old.” He replied, “Oh, we have a smartass here, huh?” Johnny laughed and said, “Don, when you were 20 you couldn’t even fit in that young man’s underwear”. Well, Don didn’t like that and of course, didn’t laugh even though everyone else did and said, “But, I don’t wear underwear, Johnny”. Johnny laughed till he cried because the one-liners just kept going back and forth and I was the center of it all for some reason.

On the way out of the dressing room, Stan pulled me aside and took Don by the arm and introduced us formally. Don said to me, “Poor George, you are in a heap of trouble now with this crew. You’re not an attorney are you?” No, just a booking agent and personal manager.” Really, very nice to meet you George. Stick with Stan Irwin and you’ll never get anywhere”. It was a compliment to be insulted by Don Rickles. Celebrities would come in the wee hours to his shows in the Casbah Lounge at the Sahara just for that reason and usu-

ally wound up in the news the next day or in one of the columns. Johnny yelled from inside the dressing room, “Stan and George, let’s go get a quick bite.” We didn’t even have to order, there it was in the center of the sitting room all set up as usual. No one ever asked what you wanted to eat. I didn’t care because I didn’t eat very much anyway. I was as skinny as I had been since my High School days at that time. Johnny asked where I went to school and I told him. He said, “Oh, yes, I spent a whole year there
one night”. We were off to a good start as I felt so comfortable around Johnny and Stan that night. No one else to interfere and we just enjoyed each other’s company. Johnny was as affable as one could expect from any nice person. Very respectful and didn’t have that air about him I had experienced with so many other artists such as Liberace, Sinatra, Dean Martin, and even Jack Benny. Johnny truly was that “boy next door” type of person. Next week we have conversations back stage before and after the second show. George Michaud was a tal-

Get Hooked With Missouri Department Of Conservation Free Fishing Days June 6-7 Get hooked on fishing with the Missouri Department of Conservation’s (MDC) Free Fishing Days June 6 - 7. During Free
Fishing Days, anyone may fish in the Show-Me State without having to buy a fishing permit, trout permit, or trout park daily tag. Normal regulations remain in effect, such as limits on size and number of fish an angler may keep. Special permits may still be required at some county, city, or private fishing areas. Trespass laws remain in effect on private property. Conservation makes Missouri a great place to fish, and Free Fishing Days encourages people to sample the state’s abundant fishing opportuni-
ties. Missouri has more than a million acres of surface water, and most of it provides great fishing. More than 200 different fish species are found in Missouri, with 20 of them being game fish for the state’s more than 1.1 million anglers, For information on Missouri fishing regulations, permit requirements, fish identification, and more, get a copy of MDC’s “2015 Summary of Missouri Fishing Regulations” where permits are sold, at MDC offices and nature centers, and
online at mdc.mo.gov/ node/6108. “Find MO Fish” with MDC’s free mobile app. Find MO Fish includes annual fishing prospects, weekly fishing reports, geo-location to find fishattractor spots, regulations for specific fish species and locations, detailed information on various fish species, and more. The free app even lets anglers by permits online. Learn more and download Find MO Fish at mdc.mo.gov/ node/15421.

Southwestern Bean & Quinoa Salad With Cilantro-Lime Dressing
Whether it’s a quick side for Mother’s day family dinner or a picnic or potluck, this Southwestern Bean & Quinoa combination is a delicious, good-for-you choice that’s as easy as 1-2-3. First cook up some quinoa that will be ready in about 15 minutes. While it cooks, chop and slice the vegetables and whisk up the cilantrolime dressing. Next comes a can of READ Southwestern Bean Salad, the secret ingredient that adds great flavor and saves tons of time in the kitchen. Combine the zesty Tex-Mex seasoned mixture of black beans, kidney beans, corn and hominy with the quinoa and veggies, add the aromatic dressing, toss and go.
By George Michaud The NEWZROOM CAFÉ is located right across the street from Raytown High. A good location. It seats exactly 46 and that’s with two bar stools at the counter. When you arrive, it’s like family just got in from out of town. Everyone is there to greet you with open arms. Very friendly and cordial. I met Miranda Todd from Kansas City who turned out to be my waitress. She’s courteous and takes care of her customers first. LePasha (Pash for short) Wilson and Joey Henderson do the cooking and are from Kansas City. Marvin Russell and Michelle Russell are the owners. Eric Russell is the manager and is the floor manager. So, this is certainly a family business

MDC Foresters Say 17-Year Cicadas Will Raise A Racket Since 1998, a particular brood of cicada nymphs tunneled through the soil, sucked sap from roots and grew from ant-like specks into bumblebee-sized nymphs. They will emerge by the thousands this spring in western Missouri and transform into winged adult insects, with male cicadas raising a raspy racket as they serenade females. “Early summer will be abuzz with sound where 17year cicadas emerge”, said Rob Lawrence, forest entomologist for the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC). “In some places they make a pretty loud noise.” Periodical cicadas pose no threat to people and minimal threats to trees. They are so named because the broods emerge in 13-year or 17-year cycles. This 17-year brood emergence is occurring in an area that extends from Iowa to Texas and includes western Missouri and eastern Kansas. A 13-year emergence is also occurring in southeast Missouri and portions of other states but the two broods are not expected to overlap which only occurs once every 221 years. “The cicadas will begin emerging from the soil in early to mid-May, depending on how quickly weather conditions warm soil in the Kansas City and St. Joseph areas, Lawrence said, “though warm temperatures could hasten emergence.” Cicada nymphs will open half-inch holes in the soil surface as they emerge. Some may build three- to five-inch tall mud chimneys above their holes. Wingless nymphs will climb up on trees and other objects to shed their brownish paper shell-like exoskeletons to become adults with wings. Males will join together to form choruses to attract females by rapidly flexing two drum-like structures in their
broken branch tips called flagging. Young trees can be harmed and fruit trees can be stressed because they have small branches favored by females for egg laying.
MDC foresters do not recommend using insecticides for cicadas. Small or newlyplanted trees and shrubs can be covered with mesh and tied at the trunk. “To reduce
stress issues, homeowners should water young trees well during summer’s hot and dry months,” Lawrence said.

abdomens called tymbals. The flexing produces a click, and the clicks come so fast it produces a raspy hum. They sing during the day with the loudest drone rising during the hottest part of the day. Periodical cicadas are slightly smaller and striking red eyes and blackish bodies. Annual cicadas have greenish bodies, dark eyes, are about two inches long and appear each year when we hear their drones ebb and flow in the tree tops. Periodical cicadas will not appear in all locations within the brood emergence area that did not have trees 17 years ago, or perhaps even 34 years ago, would not have provided a place for females to lay eggs and for the nymphs to hatch and drop to

the soil. Soil condition changes such as severe drought or construction disturbance could reduce the number of nymphs. With favorable conditions, periodical cicadas could appear by the hundreds or even thousands to provide a feast for creatures that feed on insects. “The large emergences are an evolutionary adaptation that lets the species survive by overwhelming predators with sheer numbers and a lengthy emergence cycle,” Lawrence said. Cicadas can affect trees as females cut narrow slits in small branches and lay eggs in the slits which can stress the limbs. Large, mature trees are generally not greatly affected. Homeowners may notice some browned and
