Congratulate Raytown’s Class Of 2014
Raytown’s graduating Class of 2014 totaled 588 seniors, 302 from Raytown High and 286 from Raytown South High School. Their commencement ceremonies took
place last week on May 19 for Raytown and May 20 for Raytown South. Proud mothers and fathers, grandparents, uncles, aunts and
family friends gathered to witness this important milestone of their graduate, recalling the blood, sweat and tears to reach this moment, full of hope for their future. Excited yet
pensive sons and daughters donned caps and gowns to march across the stage to thunderous applause to accept their coveted high school diplomas – the ticket to entering the
adult world no matter which path they take. Where will our Class of 2014 go and how far will their dreams take them?

Raytown Educational Foundation Awards $87,000 In Scholarships By Diane Krizek Editor On May 28, 2014, the Raytown Educational Foundation awarded 52 single award or first year scholarships to 37 students in the Class of 2014 totaling $45,000. Fifteen previous graduates are eligible for 15 renewable scholarships totaling $42,000. The combined total of single awards, first year awards and renewable awards scholarships for the 2014-15 tuition year is $87,000 for 67 students. “Behind every scholarship application is a story,” said Martha Cockerell, Executive Director. “Hu-
man relationships are most important so we put donor and recipients together at the table so generosity could be recognized and recipients had the opportunity to tell their stories face to face.” The Raytown Educational Foundation (REF), founded in 1992, is an independent 501c3 nonprofit organized to support programs to enhance excellence in Raytown Quality Schools (RQS). The scholarship programs were established in 1998 and today twenty-two funds are dedicated to graduating seniors. Some of the scholarships were established as memorials to students and teachers. The Original
Cardinals Scholarship was established in 2014 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the first three classes to graduate from Raytown South High School in 1964, 1965 and 1966. Raytown High School alumni established a scholarship this year to honor and commemorate the 85th birthday of Robert Clark, a retired teacher from RQS who began his career in 1956. Some donors are very involved in the recipient selection process, such as the Susanne Orrell Memorial Scholarhip. Susanne’s parents, Don and Geri Orrell, and her best friend, Marilyn Shireman, look for a student who exemplifies Susanne’s

personality. “Susanne was well rounded student and a hard worker. She was a good athlete and musician but also very intelligent in math and science and wanted to be a doctor,” says Shireman. The Raytown High School Class of 1956 established their scholarship for the student whose class rank is number fifty-six after seven semesters at Raytown High School. Vera Jameson recalls that fellow Be sure to pick up a copy of your classmate, Bruce Loewenburg, was the sparkplug that initiated the Raytown-Brooking Eagle next week scholarship in 1997. “It was origi- to discover a nearly 65 year old nally set up at the KC Foundation,” Raytown tradition that is still going strong today.

Founder of Raytown Artists Association Attends 50th Anniversary Celebration The students of Mary Lou Shaw, artist and devoted teacher, kept saying that they needed a place where they can get together and talk art. And so, in 1964, Shaw founded the Raytown Artists Association (RAA), the first organization of its kind in Raytown. This year marks the 50th anniversary of RAA and Shaw was able to attend the celebration and share newspaper clippings documenting her many years in the art field. She even taught bedridden and disabled artists how to paint so they could earn money. Shaw shared a story about a 29-year-old woman in Branson, MO, who was paralyzed from the neck down. She wanted a chin-
operated wheel chair so she wouldn’t have to be so dependent on nurses. The local Steve Miller Artist Association learned of her dream wish and started an Operation Wheelchair fund. Shaw, who lived in the area at that time, volunteered to teach Shirley Smithart how to oil paint with her mouth to raise money for her wheel chair. Of course, Shaw had to learn to paint with her mouth

your children is nice but to me it’s much more meaningful to leave a legacy.” At the end of the scholarship program, Martha Cockerell encouraged scholarship recipients to be future scholarship donors because they are sure to be on a path of success, “Don’t forget to give back.” Scholarships went to: Deneisha Abercrombie, SHS $1000 Original Cardinals Scholarship
According to the story, Smithart completed two landscapes and was working on a still life. The entire community came together for Smithart. The Artist Association donated paintings for raffle drawings, churches organized fundraising events and took up free will offerings and McDonald’s in Branson even donated 10 cents for every bag of french fries sold. At the time the article was written, $1338 was raised of the $2700 needed to purchase the wheelchair, “not including batteries” and Smithart was looking forward to the fulfillment of her dream. But Smithart now had a skill thanks to Mary Lou Shaw who later moved to Raytown.

says Carl Svahnberg, “but we moved it to the Raytown Educational Foundation where we get more and pay less.” The Raytown Community Pride Scholarship was set up in 2001 by Bob Kessel, the Foundation’s Executive Director. In 2013, the Foundation established the designation of the Bob Kessel Scholar to honor Kessel for his eighteen years of volunteer service as the executive director. “I’ve only served on the Foundation’s Board of Trustees for a couple years and it’s unbelievable to me that Bob served as long as he did because it’s not easy,” said Matt Verlinden, Board Trustee. “He had tremendous dedication and I am honored to have been invited to this board who are also very dedicated. Kansas City’s IT Reputation Continues To Grow By Jeff Pinkerton On Wednesday (last week), Cisco announced that Kansas City will be its next “smart city.” This initiative promises to leverage the power of computing and data to make living in the Kansas City region even better. Though we shouldn’t take success for granted, it seems like good IT news has become somewhat commonplace in the metro. The Google Fiber
announcement a few years ago was certainly a big deal, and since then we have had several IT companies move into the area, such as CoSentry, Netsmart, Suitable Technologies and, most recently, MindMixer. This doesn’t even take into account the considerable growth in IT employment by companies already based here. The bottom line is, when we ask ourselves what Kansas City’s economy is about, IT needs to be a part of the
answer. Let’s take a look at some of the numbers. According to EMSI, there are 27,879 jobs in the Computer Services industry cluster in the Kansas City metro, up by 6,000 job since 2001. This gives the region a location quotient of 1.59, which basically means the portion of Kansas City’s workforce in computer services is 59 percent larger than the portion of the workforce in computer services in the U.S. as a whole.
This is an advantage our region should enjoy long into the future. Again according to EMSI, we will add an additional 5,252 net new jobs in computer services by 2023. This is an increase of 21 percent. The economy is always changing, but for the foreseeable future, IT promises to be featured prominently. Our IT industry has grown, somewhat quietly at first, but it is now positioned to take our “smart city” into the future.
First Federal Bank Robber Nabbed Thanks To Bank Teller’s Quick Thinking On April 24, 2014, at approximately 11:29 a.m., a lone white male entered the First Federal Bank, 9330 East Gregory, Raytown, Missouri, and approached the teller counter with a demand note,
“YOU KNOW WHAT THIS IS, HURRY UP, PUT THE MONEY IN THE BAG, NO FUNNY BUSINESS, HURRY UP.” The teller did not have access to any money so walked over to a co-teller and
showed her the demand note and $2,025.00 was turned over to the robber. He placed it in a manila envelope and asked for the return of his demand note. Unknown to him, the teller had slid his
demand note onto the floor behind her station. When he requested its return, she took a piece of similar card stock from her trash can, folded it in half and placed it in the envelope the robber had given
her for the money. The original demand note was turned over to the Raytown Police Department. A cooperating witness identified the robber as Robert Tyler Morris from the
photos taken from the surveillance camera. Kansas City, Missouri Police Crime Laboratory were able to verify that the fingerprint recovered from the bank robbery note belonged to Morris.

OPINION
Playing The Part Of Overzealous Fan – Jason Offutt
Jason Offutt Author’s note: In Spring 2013, I spent three and a half weeks teaching in London. This is one in an amazingly sporadic series exploring my time in that city. The train ride was longer than I was used to. In central London, Tube cars come every few minutes. The farther out you get, the longer the wait. Sitting at Canada Water station (names for everything here are a bit odd), waiting for the London Overground train, an attractive British woman walked up to me and asked, “Where’s the platform for Crystal Palace?” I said,” I believe it’s…” “Oh,” she said, stopping me. “You’re American.” And she walked away. In the U.K., Americans aren’t expected to know anything. The train eventually arrived, and I boarded it for the New Cross Gate station. I was nervous because I’d never been this far out of central London before. “Don’t worry,” a Londoner who works at my building said when I asked about safety. “There isn’t anywhere in London I wouldn’t feel safe in.” Apparently she’d never been to New Cross Gate. Spray paint graffiti started to appear on buildings about five minutes out from the station, and trash littered the right of way. I hadn’t seen graffiti or litter in London up till this point. Nervousness started to crawl over me, but I shook

it off. Sure, I was alone. Sure, the area looked rough. Sure, I didn’t know exactly where I was going, but I was going all the same. I was headed for the Winchester. A pub from one of my favorite movies “Shaun of the Dead.” And if a city full of zombies didn’t keep those heroes from going down to the pub, graffiti wasn’t going to stop me. A piece of litter blew across the street and over the cracked sidewalk (pavement over here) as I searched for the Winchester’s home on Monson Road. Walking past people
New York Yankees ball caps, I saw it. The Winchester. If you’ve never gone to a place featured in a favorite movie, it’s embarrassingly magical. Standing in front of the Winchester, which was once an actual pub called The Duke of Albany, I felt a bit giddy. Kind of silly, yes, but I have no problem with that. I took selfie and walked back to the train station. Yes, I’d traveled far out of my comfort zone for only a few minutes of awe, but it was worth it. I just wish I could have bashed some zombies and

I was in a rough neighborhood. I just crossed my fingers and started walking. Somewhere between an Indian restaurant and a group of young men in a church garden (yard) drinking beer out of large bottles in brown bags, I found Monson Road. The noise of traffic, laughter and anger from the main street quickly grew silent as I explored the interior of New Cross. A street past a park with shady looking teenagers in
popped into the Winchester for a pint, but the building is no longer a pub. It’s a block of flats (apartment building). I guess I could have gone inside and knocked on doors until someone gave me a pint. Someone would have, too. The British have wonderful manners. A native of Missouri, Jason currently teaches journalism at Northwest Missouri State University and has earned many humor writer awards throughout his career.

The Herman Family Of Raytown & The U-Smile Motor Inn
The Raytown Historical Society will present its Ambassador series on Monday June 2, 2014, 10:00 a.m. entitled “The Herman Family of Raytown & The U-Smile Motor Inn.” Joseph Herman was an early entrepreneur and visionary. When motor travel was just taking off in our country in the early 1920’s, Herman and his sons saw the opportunity to establish a camp where travelers could spend the night along their way. U-Smile Camp was built at 47th Street and Raytown Trafficway and was instantly a huge success. It would be

Salmon is one fish long-heralded for its nutritional value, and Alaska canned salmon offers a convenient way to add more deliciously nourishing seafood to your diet.

Good Turn For Raytown Boy Scouts On May 19, 2014, the Boy Scouts of America (BSA), Heart of America Council hosted a “Good Turn for Raytown Breakfast” to help raise money to send ten Raytown Boy Scouts to summer camp that costs $159 per child for nine days. The Home Skillet restaurant sponsored the breakfast that was served in the community room at REAP. The breakfast raised $1,240 towards their goal of $1,500. Mayor David Bower, whose father was a Scoutmaster, opened the breakfast program explaining how important Scouting was to him while growing up. “The leadership skills and bond between Scouts can’t be replaced,” said Bower who admitted that Scouting kept him out of trouble. Leroy Felzien shared his passionate story of devoting 45 years of his life to Raytown Scouting and claims, “I will stay in it until they close the coffin lid.” Felzien’s sons and grandson’s are all Eagle Scouts yet he never earned that rank because there was no Scouting program in St. Francis, Kansas, where he

Mayor David Bower shares his Scouting experience has had a 75% to 100% success rate. More parents are becoming involved. Raytown Scouts are fortunate to have great hunting programs available to them. Michele Sipes and her husband are Cub Scout leaders so their whole family is involved. “Scouting encourages boys to take responsibility for their choices instead of “he did it”. They will learn how to cook and “you break it, you fix it”. Parents who get involved can learn important
skills like emergency preparedness and their greatest gift to their child is becoming a role model,” said Sipes. Sipes also brought up the fact that college scholarships and career opportunities are offered to Eagle Scouts by dozens of universities, BSA local councils, and religious, civic, and military organizations. James Arcano, District Executive at BSA Heart of America Council, sincerely believes he would not have graduated from the Univer-
sity of Central Missouri had he not been an Eagle Scout. Arcano would like more Scouts from Raytown to gain experiences that no others boys can get elsewhere. He knows one Scout who spent two weeks in Antarctica. “But some of my best Scouting stories come from getting up at 6:00 a.m. to collect food for REAP and being out with my buddies helping people, one of the morals we teach,” he said.
Raytown Rotary Club Assists REAP The Raytown Rotary Club recently assisted the local Raytown Emergency Assistance Program by collecting non-perishables at local stores. The service club collected items in barrels at the stores in conjunction with the local Boy Scouts’ project in which they left bags at homes and picked them up later af-
ter residents had an opportunity to fill them with nonperishables. This joint service project helped replenish the empty shelves at REAP. The Raytown Rotary Club also assisted REAP by participating in KC Days in which Rotary Clubs take donations for the KC Star newspaper on street corners and in front of
stores. Half of the proceeds raised by all Rotary Clubs participating goes to the Rotary Camp in Lee’s Summit, Missouri and the other half goes to a charitable organization chosen by each club. The Raytown Rotary Club has chosen their portion to go to REAP to support supplying children with shoes.
