Congratulate Raytown’s Class Of 2014
Raytown’s graduating Class of 2014 totaled 588 seniors, 302 from Raytown High and 286 from Raytown South High School. Their commencement ceremonies took
place last week on May 19 for Raytown and May 20 for Raytown South. Proud mothers and fathers, grandparents, uncles, aunts and
family friends gathered to witness this important milestone of their graduate, recalling the blood, sweat and tears to reach this moment, full of hope for their future. Excited yet
pensive sons and daughters donned caps and gowns to march across the stage to thunderous applause to accept their coveted high school diplomas – the ticket to entering the
adult world no matter which path they take. Where will our Class of 2014 go and how far will their dreams take them?

Raytown Educational Foundation Awards $87,000 In Scholarships By Diane Krizek Editor On May 28, 2014, the Raytown Educational Foundation awarded 52 single award or first year scholarships to 37 students in the Class of 2014 totaling $45,000. Fifteen previous graduates are eligible for 15 renewable scholarships totaling $42,000. The combined total of single awards, first year awards and renewable awards scholarships for the 2014-15 tuition year is $87,000 for 67 students. “Behind every scholarship application is a story,” said Martha Cockerell, Executive Director. “Hu-
man relationships are most important so we put donor and recipients together at the table so generosity could be recognized and recipients had the opportunity to tell their stories face to face.” The Raytown Educational Foundation (REF), founded in 1992, is an independent 501c3 nonprofit organized to support programs to enhance excellence in Raytown Quality Schools (RQS). The scholarship programs were established in 1998 and today twenty-two funds are dedicated to graduating seniors. Some of the scholarships were established as memorials to students and teachers. The Original
Cardinals Scholarship was established in 2014 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the first three classes to graduate from Raytown South High School in 1964, 1965 and 1966. Raytown High School alumni established a scholarship this year to honor and commemorate the 85th birthday of Robert Clark, a retired teacher from RQS who began his career in 1956. Some donors are very involved in the recipient selection process, such as the Susanne Orrell Memorial Scholarhip. Susanne’s parents, Don and Geri Orrell, and her best friend, Marilyn Shireman, look for a student who exemplifies Susanne’s

personality. “Susanne was well rounded student and a hard worker. She was a good athlete and musician but also very intelligent in math and science and wanted to be a doctor,” says Shireman. The Raytown High School Class of 1956 established their scholarship for the student whose class rank is number fifty-six after seven semesters at Raytown High School. Vera Jameson recalls that fellow Be sure to pick up a copy of your classmate, Bruce Loewenburg, was the sparkplug that initiated the Raytown-Brooking Eagle next week scholarship in 1997. “It was origi- to discover a nearly 65 year old nally set up at the KC Foundation,” Raytown tradition that is still going strong today.
