Candlelight Quilters Donates Table Covers For REAP Xmas Store Setting up the Christmas store is a year-long production, where over 70 volunteers work tirelessly to make Christmas special for about 450 kids in the Raytown area. One of the biggest tasks used to be pinning the red, white, and green tablecloths together on over 20 tables each year. It would take hours and hours to put them on perfectly, and just as long taking them off. Pin pricks and sores covered the volunteers’ hands. Several months ago Al Brown, director of REAP, spoke to Bev Kline, president of the Candlelight Quilters of Raytown, about making and donating tablecloths specifically for the Christmas store. The Quilters took on the task and custom-made 21 table covers that were donated to REAP. The new covers slip over the tables in less than 20 seconds and make the whole Christmas store process a more efficient operation. “It was our guild’s pleasure to help REAP in this special way.” Kline said. “Al made it clear that these table covers had been on his wish list for years. We’re glad we were able to make it happen for him and for all the volunteers and clients at REAP.”

REAP is so grateful for the kind and generous hearts of the Candlelight Quilters of Raytown:

Raytown Politicians Recognize Fred Arbanas Fred Arbanas was recently recognized by Raytown friends and supporters for his 42 years of service on the Jackson County legislature from 1973 to 2014. Arbanas announced his retirement earlier this year choosing not to run for reelection in November. Fred was presented with a custom fishing rod handcrafted by Bruce Bruch, longtime Raytown resident and former Raytown Fire Protection Board member. The white with gold metal flake fiberglass pole with red windings commemorates Arbanas’ years as the KC Chief’s best tight end. Bruch finished the pole with an Alps handle reel seat, and two laser-etched mahogany inserts. One reads “Jackson County Legislature, 1973 – 2014” and the other “Fred Arbanas, 84, Texans & Chiefs, 1961 – 1970” and includes a KC Chief’s arrowhead. Bass Pro of Independence donated an Abu Garcia Ambassadeur round reel. The presentation of the custom fishing rod was made by former state representative, Judge Vernon

Scoville at the Truman Courthouse in Independence on Monday, December 8, 2014. This recognition was coordinated by former Speaker Pro Tem of the Missouri House, James Barnes of Raytown. Fred Arbanas was a leader in developing the Little Blue Sewer district that eliminated sewer lagoons for Raytown, Grandview and Lees Summit and enhanced area development for eastern Jackson County. He also led the successful programs to develop Longview and Blue Springs lakes. The Jackson County legislature named the golf course at Longview after Fred Arbanas in recognition of his public service. In his role as Chair of Parks and Recreation, he was often cited for his leadership and service to youth sports. Arbanas began his professional football career with the Dallas Texans in 1961 then they moved to Kansas City in 1962 to become the Kansas City Chiefs. He will also be remembered as an All-Pro Super Bowl champion for the KC Chiefs in 1966.
