Welcome to our Spring Season 2013. I hope there’s plenty to interest and excite you in the coming programme of work. The economic climate is proving challenging for everyone right now, and that includes the Belgrade. We’ve experienced some significant cuts to our budgets but we’re doing all we can to continue creating and presenting a wide range of shows at great value prices. I’d like to thank you for your continued support of the theatre which is very much appreciated, as ever. Hamish Glen Artistic Director To help you get the most out of your visit to the Belgrade here are some handy booking tips: • Avoid queuing at Box Office or on the phone by booking online. It’s cheaper, really easy to do and you can choose your own seats. New shows go on sale online first, so check for the latest additions. • Book equivalent amounts of full price tickets for two or more participating shows in our multi-purchase offer at the same time and save off your full price tickets. • You can enjoy the show from every seat in the main auditorium, but remember the front row of the stalls and the boxes don’t always offer the best view. • Over 18 and under 26? Limited tickets to selected shows are FREE. Look out for the logo and check our website for details. Bookable from 21/01/13.
• Tickets for first nights, previews and weekday matinees are often available at a discounted rate so go for these options to get the best value. These tickets do sell quickly though so book early to get the seats you want. • There’s limited capacity in the B2 auditorium so book early if you want a seat in the stalls.

STAGE VERSION BY RACHEL WAGSTAFF DIRECTED BY ALASTAIR WHATLEY
Tues 29 Jan – Sat 2 Feb A mesmerising story of love, courage and sacrifice is now brought to the stage in this critically acclaimed version of Sebastian Faulks’s bestselling novel. An epic tale of love and war set both before and during the Great War. In pre-war France, a young Englishman, Stephen Wraysford, embarks on a passionate and dangerous affair with the beautiful Isabelle Azaire that turns their world upside down. As the war breaks out over the idyll of his former life, Stephen must lead his men through the carnage of the Battle of the Somme and through the sprawling tunnels that lie deep under ground. Faced with the unprecedented horror of the war Stephen clings to the memory of Isabelle as his world explodes around him. Recently aired on BBC One and following on from the hit West End production, this new adaptation marks the first touring production of the play. Performed by a dynamic ensemble including award-winning actress Sarah Jayne Dunn (Drop Dead Gorgeous, Hollyoaks), Charlie G Hawkins (EastEnders), Arthur Bostrom (‘Allo, Allo’), Tim Van Eyken (War Horse), Tim Treloar (National Theatre, RSC) and introducing newcomer Jonathan Smith as Stephen Wraysford. www.birdsongthetour.com Evenings: 7.45pm Matinees: Weds 30 Jan & Sat 2 Feb, 2.30pm Fri 1, 7.45pm

“There’s a lot to be said for marriage. The opposite also applies.” Join us on the hilarious rollercoaster that is MA RIAGE. Nikolai Gogol’s timeless and unpredictable comedy is as sparkling and accessible as it ever was. Summer’s coming in St Petersburg and blushing bride-to-be, Agafya, has a string of suitors lined up for her by the local matchmaker – but how can she decide which one to pick? Ivan wants to get married – but how long will he take to pop the question once he’s made up his mind? Ivan’s best friend, Ilya, driven to distraction by all the dithering, vows to take charge and force his hand – wiping out the competition from the other suitors and making sure the day ends with wedding bells ringing. But will his cunning plan succeed? Hamish Glen’s production of Laurie Slade’s new version has been commissioned by the Belgrade in its continuing exploration of plays on the theme of MA RIAGE and offers the perfect antidote to the winter blues.

Mon 11 – Sat 16 Feb “Uhry’s play amounts to a plea for more kindness in the world and its principals make it with conviction and dignity.” Sunday Telegraph Having broken records on Broadway and played to sold out audiences in London’s West End, David Esbjornson’s award-winning production has dazzled audiences and critics alike. Inspiration for the Oscar-winning smash hit movie, Driving Miss Daisy is the charming, poignant and utterly compelling tale of the unlikely friendship that blossoms between a prickly, elderly southern matriarch, Daisy Werthan, and her kind-hearted chauffeur, Hoke Colburn. As the wheels turn and the decades roll by against a backdrop of prejudice, inequality and civil unrest, the pair slowly transcend their differences and ultimately grow to rely on each other far more than either ever expected. LESLEY JOSEPH Tues 26 Feb – Sat 2 March The girls are back! One of BBC TV’s most popular and fondly-remembered sitcoms comes to the stage with all three of its original leading cast members, Pauline Quirke, Linda Robson and Lesley Joseph. Birds of a Feather ran on the BBC for nearly ten years throughout the 1990s, becoming a massive hit right from the word go. It remains not only a classic comedy, but also, as a female-centred long-running series, a truly rare gem. And now the three stars of the TV series are re-united on stage to re-create their adored characters, sisters Sharon Theodopolopoudos, Tracy Stubbs and their sex-mad neighbour, Dorien Green. A brand-new show, Birds of a Feather has been created especially for the theatre by The Comedy Theatre Company, producers of the highly-successful tour of Victoria Wood’s dinnerladies. Please note that due to the busy work lives of the three stars, this tour is very limited in length so make sure you grab this opportunity to see Birds of a Feather onstage for the first time ever.

by Marc Camoletti, translated by Beverley Cross

Starring Kim Tiddy (The Bill), Zoie Kennedy (The Royal), Ciara Janson (Hollyoaks), Philip Stewart (Blood Brothers) and Ben Roddy (Innocent Crimes), Talking Scarlet’s Boeing Boeing is a new production of the classic French farce which has seen recent success both in the West End and on Broadway. Bernard juggles three flight attendant fiancées, successfully convincing each that she is the only one. However when old school friend Robert arrives unexpectedly, a new, faster Boeing jet is introduced and weather delays occur. Fri 22 March “They say I’m meddling in the foreign affairs of the United States’ Government. Now, that’s too bad, ‘cause I’m going to have to continue to meddle...” Paul Robeson is a world famous actor, singer and civil rights campaigner. When over the years he gets progressively too radical and outspoken for the establishment’s liking, he is branded a traitor to his country, harassed and denied opportunities to perform or travel. Just as physical, emotional and mental stress threaten to push him over the fine line between genius and madness, he is summoned to appear before the House of Un-American Activities Committee, to give the most difficult and important performance of his career. This award-winning roller coaster journey through Robeson’s remarkable and eventful life highlights how his radical activism caused him to be disowned and disremembered, even by the leaders and descendants of the civil rights movement. It features much fiery oratory and some of his famous songs, including a dramatic rendition of Ol’ Man River. Tayo Aluko revives one of the 20th Century’s most impressive but overlooked figures in this powerful, compelling tour-de-force performance, which played to sell-out audiences at the Belgrade in 2010, and was also seen at New York’s Carnegie Hall in February 2012. Tamasha and Circus Space present
Co-created by Kristine Landon-Smith and Sita Brahmachari
Tues 26 – Thurs 28 March Dele plays a last game of football with his friends, says goodbye to his son and sets off on a voyage to a smog-filled metropolis across the sea. Carrying only a small suitcase, he embarks on a journey into the unknown. Others he meets along the way share his dream of building a home in a new city and being joined by their families.
“A moment of kindness in a sea of unfamiliarity… A long, hard day at work… A lively party… A nostalgic lullaby…” Based on the illustrated novel by Oscar winner Shaun Tan, one man’s tale echoes the many ‘arrivals’ happening around us all the time. This epic story unfolds through an extraordinary weaving together of theatre, circus and music. Tamasha is an award-winning theatre company, which drives the crossover of culturally specific work into the mainstream. Successes like Snookered, East is East and The Trouble with Asian Men have won acclaim from audiences and critics alike.
“Tamasha means commotion, creating a stir, and the company is certainly doing that.” whatsonstage.com on Tamasha’s most recent production Snookered

Autumn Seaso The Belgrade Theatre and Inspire present
WRITTEN BY RAY GOUDIE AND JOE HARMSTON DIRECTED BY JOE HARMSTON
Colonel Luke Gibson is proud to lead the Scottish regiment his family has served in for generations. The two sons he has brought up alone are now young men; while Captain Mike Gibson battles to destroy opium poppy fields in Afghanistan, his brother Kyle fuels his band’s gigs with heroin. When Kyle hits rock bottom, can he return home to the community he has insulted and rejected? How will his brother respond to his needs? Will Colonel Gibson balance his love for two such different sons with his responsibilities to all the soldiers under his command? This fast-moving, highly-energised new musical began life at The Edinburgh Festival and now begins a new life at The Belgrade. From its explosive choreographic opening on patrol in Helmand Province, through the comic absurdities of Kyle’s drug-induced hallucinations, The Prodigals drives this extraordinary tale on with stunning new music and dance and a script that challenges us to explore the toughest of emotional battlegrounds.

The hit Blitz play back by popular demand! By Alan Pollock
Directed by Hamish Glen
“If there is any play every person in Coventry should make a point of seeing, this is it.” Coventry Observer
Coventry, November 1940. Katie, a headstrong 18 year old training to be a teacher, encounters the stranded Michael, an Oxford tutor of Romantic Literature and Language, while waiting for the ‘All Clear’ at a railway station. It’s the beginning of what could be a straightforward love story. But nothing is straightforward in wartime. Unknown to Katie, Michael has been forced to turn his language skills to deciphering codes at Bletchley Park. Katie, who lives with her family in Coventry, has no idea how terrible the threat of war is. But Michael does… Did Winston Churchill have advance warning of the attack on Coventry? Was the city sacrificed for the greater good - or to provoke America into the war? This gripping wartime love story set during the Coventry Blitz is back by popular demand having received an overwhelming response from audiences and critics alike.
“This intensely dramatic play is a landmark chapter in the city’s theatrical and cultural history.” Coventry Times Age recommendation: 11+

ATRE AND KP PRODUCTIONS PRESENT
Village school teacher Platonov is a man who is loved by women. Despite his best intentions he is drawn into a series of extra-marital affairs that all hold the promise of escape from the provincial Russian reality where he and his circle of friends are trapped. Showing us a side to Chekhov that is funnier, more brutal and more wildly passionate than the writer we know, Sons Without Fathers shines a light on this band of disaffected thirty-somethings - too old to move with the times, and too young to let go of their dreams. Consumed by bitterness and disappointment, they attempt to fill the void in their lives with sex and vodka, blaming their fathers for the mess they’ve been left in. Sons Without Fathers is a brand new version of Chekhov’s rarely performed first play, Platonov and comes from the same team that created the Belgrade and Arcola’s acclaimed co-production of Uncle Vanya in 2011.
