What’s On Spring 2012
Welcome... Welcome to our new brochure for Spring 2012. We have a great range of shows this season which we really hope you will enjoy. We launched a new website last season and the feedback we have had has been really positive. It is great to see so many people using it and buying their tickets online. Don’t forget, tickets are cheaper online and it’s the best place to get the most up-to-date information about our upcoming shows. We also regularly put video clips, photographs, special competitions and all kinds of interesting information elsewhere online. There are thousands of people who engage with us via sites such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Flickr, Vimeo and the Belgrade website, so don’t miss out – come and join the conversation. The theatre also offers free WiFi in our Café, throughout the foyer and in both auditoria. Hamish Glen Artistic Director

“At that moment I realised that for eight years I’d been living with a stranger, and I’d had three children with him.”
A Doll’s House caused huge controversy when it was first performed in 1879, and the story remains an astonishingly significant comment on the role of women in society. The battle of the sexes is explored further this season as Nora is complemented by our production of Strindberg’s The Father (Pg 14–15), which was written as a response to A Doll’s House.

What dream would you protect with your life? The Olympic torch bearer is approaching Moscow, heralding the start of the 1980 Olympics. But not everyone is allowed to celebrate the historic occasion. In a bid to show the world a cleaned-up version of life in the Soviet Union, the authorities have swept the prostitutes out of Moscow, along with other undesirables. Stars in the Morning Sky takes place in a disused mental hospital on the edge of the city, where the prostitutes have been herded. On one unforgettable night of searing emotional drama, there is both raw brutality and the most unexpected romance ... as the characters discover what is precious to them – and cling to it for dear life. This new adaptation of Stars in the Morning Sky has been written by award-winning playwright Chris Hannan writer of The Three Musketeers and the Princess of Spain, a co-production with the Belgrade, and winner of Best New Play at the 2011 Critics-Awards for Theatre in Scotland awards, and will be directed by the Belgrade’s Artistic Director, Hamish Glen. “ Am I - or am I not - the child’s father?” An uneasy stand-off exists between the Captain and his wife, Laura. But a disagreement over the future of their daughter, Bertha, triggers an all out war. Laura will stop at nothing to gain control of her daughter’s education and when she suggests to the Captain that he may not actually be the girl’s father at all, she sets a chain of events in motion that cannot be stopped. Joe Harmston directs Laurie Slade’s highly-charged version of this compelling drama. Joe’s acclaimed productions of Agatha Christie plays have been hugely successful at the Belgrade in recent years. Complementary perspectives on the battle of the sexes are explored by the Belgrade this season with The Father and Nora, Ingmar Bergman’s adaptation of A Doll’s House (Pg 3). The Father was Strindberg’s response to A Doll’s House. Starting with an explosive power-struggle between a married couple, both plays move towards equally devastating but radically different outcomes. Both The Father and Nora follow previous Belgrade productions such as Uncle Vanya and Scenes from a Marriage in a line of plays which examine the nature of marriage – a timeless issue as relevant today as it was when these classic plays were first written.

Following a hugely successful run in 2010, the Belgrade’s smash-hit FA Cup drama, We Love You City, is back to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of Coventry City FC’s historic win! It’s 3pm on 16 May 1987 and the streets of Coventry are deserted. But not for long… Those not in pubs, or around their TV sets, were running to get there and what followed was two hours that changed the city forever. A match packed with drama, which seemed to sum up the spirit of Coventry – determination, inventiveness, diversity and struggle. Against all the odds and expectations on that fateful day, Coventry City FC achieved the ultimate goal – they won the FA Cup. The streets were soon awash with a sea of sky blue as the people of Coventry united in victory.

The Tony Award-winning Avenue Q is the irresistibly charming musical about the lovably hopeless characters on a downtown New York street trying to make sense of life’s burning issues: love, work, relationships, and above all, just how are you supposed to pay the bills with a BA in English?

So on
Written by Peter Rowe Based on an original idea by Brian Dunham, Colin Giffin and Nicky Graham Music and Lyrics by Marc Bolan Directed by Gary Lloyd
Be the first to see this spectacular new musical explode on to the Belgrade’s Main Stage this September. Featuring some of the greatest rock songs ever written, 20th Century Boy is a celebration of the life of Marc Bolan and his band T. Rex, and stars some of the greatest singers and dancers from London’s West End. Rocker, poet, electric warrior, king of glam and godfather of punk, Marc Bolan tried many styles on for size in his search to become a superstar. Before his tragic death in 1977, a few days short of his 30th birthday, Bolan lived life at breakneck speed, creating a series of iconic images, a string of number one hits and an army of obsessive fans. This dynamic new musical looks behind the glitter and the sequins to discover what drove the “bard of Hackney” to become “bigger than Elvis”. The show will be packed with all of T. Rex’s 70s hits, including Ride a White Swan, Metal Guru, Get It On, I Love to Boogie, Children of the Revolution, and of course the title track 20th Century Boy. Based on an original production co-produced with and first performed at the New Wolsey Theatre, Ipswich, September 2011.
