What’s On

Spring/Summer 2016 W W W. B E L G R A D E . C O. U K

Welcome

Welcome to our Spring/Summer Season 2016.

I’m excited to be kicking off 2016 by directing another classic comedy, The Sisterhood. We’ve had great success in the past with comedies playing early in the new year in B2 they’re a great opportunity for people to escape the postChristmas, winter gloom and enjoy a really fun and affordable, night out at the theatre. Further on in the season we have Red Snapper, a brand new play set in Jamaica in 1962. It’s the debut play from Liz Mytton who has emerged through our playwriting project, Critical Mass, and will be directed by our Associate Director, Justine Themen.

We’re also co-producing two more exciting dramas in B2 - the American classic, A Raisin in the Sun, with Eclipse Theatre and Sheffield Theatres, and a new play set during the First World War called Wipers, with Curve Leicester and Watford Palace Theatre. Alongside Wipers, we have Phizzical’s brand new show, Bring on the Bollywood, and Kali Theatre’s The Dishonoured, making a mini-festival of fantastic new work in B2 this Spring. We also have the usual great mix of fantastic touring musicals, drama, family shows, comedy and music to keep you entertained right through until the summer.

I look forward to seeing you back at the Belgrade soon.

Hamish Glen, Artistic Director To help you get the most out of your visit to the Belgrade here are some handy booking tips:

Boxes can only be booked via Box Office. n Over 18 and under 26? Limited tickets to selected shows are FREE. Look out for the logo and check our website for details. Bookable from 26.1.16.

n There’s limited capacity in the B2 auditorium so book early if you want a seat in the stalls.

Become a Friend of the Belgrade

Sat 30 Jan - Sat 20 Feb

A little learning is a dangerous thing.

Following a string of hugely successful classic comedies, the Belgrade’s Artistic Director, Hamish Glen, makes a welcome return to the subject of marriage for his latest production, The Sisterhood.

Henriette just wants to marry the man she loves. Is that too much to ask? It certainly is for her intellectual mother, aunt and sister - the “learned ladies”, who can’t bear to see Henriette throw her life away. They have a different man in mind for her; a self-proclaimed genius of poetry and the Arts. However, her put-upon father will be pushed around no more! He’s determined to support Henriette in her choice of husband, and so the battle lines are drawn...

Auditorium: B2

Relocated in time from the 17th Century to France during the late 1980s, The Sisterhood is acclaimed playwright and translator, Ranjit Bolt’s brilliantly funny adaptation of Molière’s classic satire, Les Femmes Savantes. This fast-paced comedy is the perfect antidote to the postChristmas, winter blues.

SWIMMING AGAINST THE TIDE

Sat 5 - Sat 19 Mar

Jamaica, 1962. The island is alive with the excitement of independence and the thrill of providing the setting for the iconic James Bond movie, Dr. No. But for five women and their husbands on the council, this is a time of mixed fortunes and uncertainty, as personal and political tensions simmer against a backdrop of mass emigration and unrest.

With local people increasingly excluded from the beaches, so as not to ruin the view for the growing tourist trade, a planned visit from nearby Cuba’s communist leader, Fidel Castro, has the islanders in a spin. Will the high profile visitor bring further prestige and glamour, or will his presence incite the island’s downtrodden fishing community to rise up?

Auditorium: B2

As the pressure builds, family secrets and long-held resentments bubble to the surface - and when the councillors’ wives meet to plan a welcome meal for Castro, it’s not just the cooking pots that are in danger of boiling over. With an all-female cast playing a collection of vibrant characters, and dialogue loaded with humour and pathos, Red Snapper is the stunning debut play by Liz Mytton. Coventry Musical Theatre Society presents

42nd Street is the song and dance spectacular which tells the story of Peggy Sawyer as she sets out on her dream to become the next big star on Broadway. Based on the novel by Bradford Ropes and the subsequent 1933 film adaptation, it sees famed director Julian Marsh stage a production of a musical extravaganza at the height of the Great Depression. Set in the 1930s, 42nd Street features some of the greatest songs ever written, such as We’re In The Money, Lullaby of Broadway and of course 42nd Street. Coventry Musical Theatre Society, six times NODA Best Musical award winners, are proud to bring this legendary show to the Belgrade, following their highly successful recent productions of Oliver! and Crazy for You. Community & Education

Take Part

Building on the success of our Inspiring Curiosity year, marking the 50th anniversary of the birth of Theatre in Education, 2016 sees an equally vibrant year of projects and productions.

We’re delighted to be involved in the National Theatre’s Connections Festival again, which celebrates its 21st Anniversary this year. Our Black Youth Theatre will perform Children Of Killers by Katori Hall; What Are They Like? by Lucinda Coxon will be performed by our Canley Youth Theatre group in partnership with Coventry Youth Service; and we’ll be hosting one of the regional NT Connections 500 festivals here at the Belgrade in April, when a total of eight youth groups will perform their productions.

Also in April, students from our BTEC Performing Arts course, Acting Out, will perform Heritage by Daffyd James.

Alongside these events, we continue to run our varied programme of drama related activities for young people and the wider community. These activities now cater for all ages from 8 - 85 and beyond. They include Youth Theatre groups, some of which have a particular focus on Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic communities, Arts Gymnasium for the 50+ community, and Acting Classes and Holiday Activities. See below for contact information to find out more or get involved. If you are interested in taking part please call 024 7684 6741 or email communityadmin@belgrade.co.uk Education, Employability and Training The Belgrade Theatre is committed to supporting young people to gain valuable experience and qualifications which improve their employment prospects. This includes year-long paid apprenticeships and internships, work experience weeks for students aged 16+, University placements, careers events and volunteering opportunities.

We run a varied schools programme including pre and post show workshops, theatre tours and careers talks, as well as individual support for auditions. As a Supporter Centre there are various ways that the Belgrade Theatre can help students to achieve all elements of Arts Award, and we can also assist schools in delivering Artsmark.

In addition, our highly skilled team of theatre experts deliver professional development training for businesses, Universities, creative organisations, schools and individuals. Training workshops cover topics such as Applied Theatre, Drama in Education, Devising, Playwriting, Directing, Diversity, Presentation Skills and Team Building. Bespoke programmes can be designed to meet specific needs. 48
