his issue was a real joy to put together! It made me think of all the things that I love most in my work and I managed to cover them all in this one issue. It definitely had a lot to do with the fact that some of the most beautiful Spring/ Summer dresses had to be reviewed and the colours and prints were extraordinary. There are more than just a couple of items that will for sure find their way into my wardrobe this season!

VALENTINO

T

From the Editor

I think the most empowering thing about fashion today, is that there are no longer limitations on who should wear what and at what age. It's now more about the different personalities! It’s visible in most all of the Spring/Summer 08 collections; it’s exciting and refreshing to see this movement in style. A variety of looks with strong textures, bold colours with soft and structured shapes are all seen to be trendy yet they are all completely different. There is another movement happening that I am aware of and that's being thankful everyday and sending that message out to the Universe. All I have to say today is, I am thankful that when my daughter does eventually get married, she won't be seeing me in any of those Mother of the Bride Get Ups, but instead I shall be promenading around in a Valentino evening gown! Women today don’t think or look the same way our mothers or grandmothers did. Age limitations have become very faint, almost non-existent, especially in fashion and beauty, and how could it not? It is so difficult to know exactly how old anyone is any more! The lines that used to be very clearly marked in the sand are no longer there. There is no cut off age to wearing above the knee or below, to wearing tight, fitted or full! If we like a style and it looks good we wear it. There are no restrictions to the way we wear our hair or apply our make- up and even more importantly there are no longer frowns on women dating with younger men but instead kudos! So take advantage of all these changes and really enjoy your personal style, it’s a fabulous time to be living in –we are finally free to truly express ourselves in the way we look, live and love! Happy living in style!

Reader's Dear B.M. I just bought the Bobbi Brown Pink Raspberry Spring Collection Palette and I love it! The colours are perfect for me. I have been thinking about a fresh new look for a while but didn't have any idea which brand to choose from, there are so many different brands. This is something I never would have purchased if I hadn't seen it in The Beauty Magazine! Sharon H. N. Andalucia This Lucky Letter won Very Irrésistible perfume by Givenchy.

Dear BM, I was invited to this amazing anniversary celebration in Madrid a couple of weeks ago and I was so worried about my hair looking too shabby for the event. Then I saw your blurb about Jessica Simpson´s new clip in hair extensions! They work great and I can't believe they were so easy to use. Anyway, I went to the party and my hair and everything else looked so good. It was one of the best nights I have had in a very long time. I noticed your mag in the hotel we were staying at in Madrid and all I could do was talk about how I thought it has had a positive impact on me and the way I look and feel. I just thought you should know. Thanks!

of it these days! Is there any way you can UPS them to me so that I can hand them out or distribute them from here? I think you’re doing a fantastic job by the way, but I just want the chance to read it again!! Patricia B, Ronda

Dear Alexandra, I fell in love with that beautiful bag from Dior that you had on your editor's letter, I made it my mission to somehow buy this amazing bag. I actually bought the black gypsy hobo, and I absolutely adore it. Samantha B. Sotogrande

Dear BM, What happened to the Beauty Forum? I was looking forward to attending and possibly exhibiting in your March one. Bernice K. Fuengirola

Dear BM, I live in Ronda and managed to pick up your magazine twice, but have the worst time getting hold 12 The Beauty Magazine

Dear Patricia, So sorry to hear you are having difficulties getting hold of The Beauty Magazine. Unfortunately we are not able to get all the way to Ronda just yet due to our circulation commitments on the coastal areas, but the good news is we are stepping up our circulation next issue to cater to our readers further afield and we’ll make a point of getting some to you then.

Dear Bernice, Sorry about that but as you can see we've put the beauty forums on hold this year to create one of the coast's largest consumer luxury events for women in

October! Go back to page 8-9 for more details. Dear BM, I thoroughly enjoyed you’re A to Z skincare feature recently published, it was so helpful. My daughter suffers with Rosacea and it is a rather embarrassing problem for young women. I thought there wasn’t anything that would really help. Thanks to your information on Goldfaden Skin Care (that I have never heard of before), I hope we have found the solution! If you’re interested, I will send you an update. Dawn M, Estepona Absolutely! We love to hear back on product trials from our readers, it helps us distinguish what works and what doesn’t. Even though our products are all tested in house by our staff, they don’t always work on everyone, so it’s always interesting to see if our readers experience the same results. The latest muse for the press, Carla Bruni Sarkozy seemed to create quite a stir arriving in London as the new First Lady of France to attend a banquet at Windsor Castle. A great shade of gloss to glam it up! The new M•A•C VIVA GLAM VI campaign featuring Fergie was created by M•A•C Senior Vice President/Creative Director James Gager, and shot by photographer, Michael Thompson. This Spring the campaign launched a special edition shade of the VIVA GLAM VI Lipglass in a soft pink-tinged mauve complimenting the latest spring looks. “I have followed the VIVA GLAM campaigns since they began with RuPaul, so I am honoured to be able to continue on the tradition. I want to empower young people to know that responsibility is glamorous. There needs to be more AIDS education and prevention programs available to youth as they are at the most risk for HIV/AIDS, and I hope that my new VIVA GLAM Lipglass will help to raise funds and awareness for this important issue.” Fergie, M•A•C VIVA GLAM VI Spokesperson. The M•A•C AIDS Fund, the heart and soul of M•A•C Cosmetics, was established in 1994 to support men, women and children affected by HIV/AIDS globally. M•A•F is a pioneer in HIV/AIDS funding, providing financial support to organizations working with underserved regions and populations. As the largest corporate non-pharmaceutical giver in the arena, M•A•F strives to raise awareness of four key issues in the fight against HIV/AIDS: prevention, the link between poverty and HIV/AIDS, access to care, and adherence to medications and treatments. To date M•A•F has raised over $100 million (U.S.) exclusively through the sale of M•A•C’s VIVA GLAM lipstick and lipglass, donating 100 per cent of the sale price to fight HIV/AIDS. 18 The Beauty Magazine

length. Everyone wants me to cut my hair to make it look thicker, but I really don’t want to, what should I do? It is true that a cut with layers will add extra fullness to the hair, but if you refuse to cut your hair, there are a lot of styling tricks that can make thin hair look thicker. Women can wear their hair “messy” to camouflage the scalp, change the part of their hair or try a modified “zig zag” part.

Does age have anything to do with it or perhaps my diet? I am slightly worried because my sister is convinced my hair will be fried when I hit 40! Is this true? There are a variety of factors including diet, stress and hormones that may contribute to the aging of the hair, dullness and loss of vibrancy. Since there are a lot more people using colour and chemical services and heat styling at a younger age as well as a lot more pollution in the environment, we are seeing the hair age at a faster rate. Because I was seeing this more and more often in my salons, it inspired me to create my Ageless range of products. Ageless combats the three signs of aging: biological, environmental and mechanical. It visibly corrects the first signs of aging (dryness, damage, dullness and uneven texture) while pro actively protecting hair from daily stressors that accelerate aging. These “age-

your ends, but my stylist always uses a razor, should I ask him to stop? It really depends on the skill level of the stylist you are seeing. A razor used improperly can contribute to additional split ends and damage the hair, but a razor used properly can be excellent for thinning out the hair and minimizing volume. Another aspect to consider is hair texture. I’ve seen razor cuts that work really well on people who have extremely thick or coarse hair.

coloured hair and it is starting to look really dull, do I need to colour my hair more often to get the shine back? A great option to give your colour some serious shine would be to get a glaze at your salon. There are also many new at-home glaze products that impart great vibrancy to colour to really achieve that 'fresh from the salon look'. My new Salon Glaze product is non-chemical and includes healthy ingredients to improve the health of your hair while adding shine.

Most people look best if they wash their hair everyday. (The exception would be people with extremely thick or frizzy hair, which can in some cases be washed and blown out every few days and not touched in between.) A great shampoo should leave your hair shiny, bouncy and healthy looking. It’s a matter of finding the right products for your hair type; in your case you would need to look for products that minimize oil production. Another option for you would be to use a dry shampoo in-between regular shampoos.

Dear Readers, To better understand some of the answers to your questions please visit marbellaclinic.com web page and click on gallery, to read more about techniques and testimonials. All my answers to your questions must be considered as guide lines only as I have not had the benefit of a personal consultation to assess your situations individually. I am about to turn 40 and I can clearly see some wrinkles around my eyes and slight sagging around the jaw. If I leave having anything surgically done for another 10 years will it have an impact on how I look after surgery at 50 or will it be better to have something done immediately? I don’t have a lot of money at the moment but I’m worried that I will regret not getting a loan now to start early, what do you think is best? To understand the ageing face and the possibilities of surgical rejuvenation one has to know that ageing of the skin and the loss of facial soft tissue volume is an ongoing and irreversible process. The later any surgical procedure is performed the more the skin 36 The Beauty Magazine

already has lost it’s tension and more important, it’s elasticity. Most surgical rejuvenation procedures take into account these two factors and use them to achieve the final result. For example, at the age of 40 the slight sagging of the jaw (jowls) can very often be treated by removal of the fat and soft tissue in the affected areas of both the neck and the jaw line by liposuction and the skin will retract perfectly leaving

a very good result with no scars and minimal invasiveness. If a patient waits 10 years or more, it is very possible that this option is no longer available and more invasive Face-Lifting procedures must be considered. This is the same for wrinkles around the eye, treated early we can use simple injections like Fillers and Botox, if the wrinkles are already deeply marked in the skin more extensive procedures are necessary to achieve a satisfying result.

Could you tell me if Blepharoplasty has a high risk of infection? Also I understand that you have to be extremely careful with this surgery as some people can end up looking gaunt and can have the opposite effect of what they were looking for. Do you have someone who specializes in this procedure that I could see? An eyelid lift (Blepharoplasty) is a straightforward procedure,

" "

Beside the classical techniques using implants there is a new technique which consists of injecting fat in the breasts which is taken from another area of the body. With this procedure you don’t get any scaring, but it is still surgery. Kai O. Kaye,MD

the risk of infection is very low as it is performed under sterile conditions. Plus the face has a very good blood supply and due to this anatomical fact is very resistant against microbiological infection. The procedure has to be adapted to your individual need removing only excess skin without changing the form and expression of your eyes, this requires a certain experience. During a consultation in our clinic I will be able to advise you extensively on this procedure, which I personally perform often and with very good results. I am thinking about finally visiting a doctor for Botox injections as so many of my friends are having this done, but then I saw something about Hylaform which does not have any of the harmful side effects. If you could choose between Restalyne, Botox and Hylaform which would it be and do you provide these treatments at Marbella Clinic? First of all, Botox treats wrinkles by relaxing the facial muscles, while Hylaform/Restylane or Perlane are so called fillers which are used to inject and fill wrinkles and by adding volume to the skin. Therefore Botox can prevent new wrinkles and correct the existing ones (so called dynamic correction), while fillers only

correct existing wrinkles to a certain degree (Static correction). Many patients even need a combination of both treatments to achieve a complete result. Last but not least we have to say that Botox in the doses used for aesthetic issues is totally harmless and reversible.

Is it possible to do anything for eyebrows? I am in my fifties and have barely any eyebrows and I am not keen on having tattoo’s because I don’t think they look natural. Is there a transplant procedure available like regular hair transplants?

Can you advise me on having my toes straightened for wearing high heel strappy sandals? I am quite confident about most parts of my body but I have hammer head toes and would love to wear pretty summer shoes!

Eyebrows can be treated by so-called micrografts, these are one-by-one single root grafts taken from the scalp under local anaesthesia. The quality of your own hair has to be assessed during a consultation, thick and dark hair gives much better results than fine, blonde hair.

The correction of hammer head toes is a minor procedure and can be carried out even under local anaesthesia. The bone is corrected by removing a wedge and straightening it in the longitudinal axis. This kind of operation is performed by an orthopeadic surgeon in our clinic.

I have some prominent jowls that appear to be getting worse is there anything that can be done for this that is not too invasive and has a quick recovery time? As mentioned before, liposuction with very fine cannulas can be performed even on the face and the jaw lines providing the removal of fat and additionally a retraction of skin caused by the liposuction. The results are very satisfying when the procedure is performed at an early stage of sagging of the jowls, if the patient waits to long, a more invasive and more expensive lifting procedure may be necessary. Losers? BY "GREEN EYES 3"

The problem with having a few glasses of wine with the Editor of a magazine is that you can easily get caught off guard and find yourself writing an article about your personal life and the trials and tribulations of internet dating!

B FEATURE

That said, I consider myself a confident, strong and an independent woman in her (very) late thirties but I will admit I do love being in a relationship. There is something I adore about coupledom, that feeling of being wanted and needed, having someone to share the highs and lows of life with. So when I found myself still single after almost a year of living in Marbella, I decided it was time to be more proactive and wake up to the realisation that Prince Charming was not going to turn up in Puerto Banus riding in on his shiny Ferrari to whisk me off my not quite designer heels. And so into the world of Internet Dating! It’s not that I was an internet dating virgin, I had a little experience back in the UK over eleven years ago and the internet was not the expanse of what it is today. Back then there were only two internet providers for the whole of the UK and one of them had a site called “Connection Café”. This is where if you needed a lift to work or you were looking for someone special you could post your ad. After reading the section on Women Looking for Men which covered the entire UK and consisting of only two women - I was ballsy enough to post my ad headed “Satisfaction Guaranteed”. It resulted in an influx of emails from numerous respected and highly professional men. I was taken to see Operas by a merchant banker, I tasted exquisite fare shared by a 54 The Beauty Magazine

blonde Viking God who worked in the city and had a diploma in massage! I met a very wealthy internet tycoon who dangled numerous delights in front of me! After the initial thrill of such meetings I finally found the man I had been looking for. He was just the run of the mill kind of guy, but who ticked all my boxes! He was tall, good-looking, university educated and a professional who travelled with work. After a 12 month whirl wind romance grabbing weekends in New York,

Warsaw and Madrid near where he was working we tied the knot and 10 years on and three children later we untied it. Dating had changed somewhat in the 10 years of being married. It now seemed the norm to have found your partner on the internet, not the pubs, clubs and bars I had been use to previously in my single days. So the first hardest decision I had to make was to choose a dating site from what seemed now to be hundreds! Did I go for the Millionaires Club where the site guaranteed to find you a millionaire? Do I look only on the

Costas for the man of my dreams, or do I leave my options open and look worldwide? I chose two websites, one that concentrated mainly on British singles in the Costas and a worldwide site that you could narrow your choices to countries only, so I chose Spain and the UK. With the decision made on where to advertise myself, now I had even more choices to make. What should I call myself and what photograph should I use? With the use of internet dating by millions of people worldwide finding a name not used by someone else was near impossible. I spent a whole evening accompanied with a glass or two or three of chardonnay as inspiration while looking at possible names for my profile, ‘May the best man win’ ‘Try before you buy’ and ‘Blonde goddess’ were all taken, so showing my age and lack of marketing know how, I went for my eye colour…, I am now known as Green Eyes 3 (two other women got in there before me). And then comes the photograph - they recommend that photographs should be posted with your profile as you will get a bigger and better response than those without. They advise you to use a photograph that you like (I don’t like any), one that is not more than 18 months old (so the one of me when I was 52kgs and 25 years old was out) and a head and shoulders view of you smiling (I think my ankles are my best feature) is the most suited.

B INTERVIEW

Yoga has always been one of those things that grabbed my attention on and off for brief moments, but those moments quickly passed. After the initial “I’d like to be able to bend like that!” and “Maybe this could be the answer to sleeping well and stressing less” have come and gone, I quickly realise – I don’t have the patience or time for Yoga! Anyway, even when I do have the time, the daughter, the dogs, the cats, the friends and the husband (not all in that order of course) are high on my list of priorities. I would much rather be having some fun versus seeking spiritual enlightenment. On reflection, does that make me shallow? There are those of us however; who feel spiritual enlightenment and healthy fit bodies that can bend every which way gives you the ability to enjoy your other happy moments even more! In fact, there are far more people that receive an element of greater happiness simply by practising Yoga. And then there’s Neo – from the aptly named “Yoga with Neo”. Why does someone with a law degree decide to leave his successful career and become a Yoga Instructor? He admits that his life has changed completely through Yoga and he has now reached a point of contentment many of us are desperately seeking. So what am I missing? Maybe, I’m not seeing the big picture and deep down somewhere inside there is a part of me that just needs to be convinced! I have been meaning to get together with Neo for over a year now spurred by several people who had attended his retreats and 56 The Beauty Magazine

YOGA with a YOGI

If you ever felt that you just needed a Little peace and quality time for yourself, to clear your head and take a breath -maybe Yoga is the way to go!

B INTERVIEW

When I did finally catch up with Neo, he was in Grenada in the Caribbean working on a children’s social development project. He has also created a new business idea of making organic chocolate to fund this work, “It’s so earthy and fascinating, we are making a documentary about it”, said Neo. I asked if he was really content with his life now and he said, “I no longer want for anything and so the desire to be anything or anyone has gone. I have my blue days but generally it’s all good.” He adds, “I offer prayers of gratitude every day and I feel truly blessed to be living this existence. Heaven really is on earth, if you can see it that way.” Very spiritual words so I wonder,

does he now consider himself to be a Hatha Yogi? “I wouldn’t say that, just a man on a journey, guided by grace, for the good of many.” He said. Clearly it wasn’t always this way? I ask, “No it took me a long time to see life like this. For many years not only was I living in the dark but I didn’t even know there was a light switch. That’s my work now with adults and children, to teach them that we have a switch and to show them where it is.” “Contentment is a conscious decision.” Neo truly believes that Yoga was the catalyst for his lifestyle change and it still is the best

way to maintain a healthy outer and inner world. So what was it that sparked this change, what made him try Yoga to begin with? “I was studying for my law finals and got bored with the tai chi classes so I tried a yoga class." He said. "I fell asleep during the relaxation at the end and woke up not knowing where was. I was disorientated but felt quite serene. It felt like a new feeling but strangely familiar at the same time.” The idea of being able to sit still long enough to fall asleep during a relaxation class already makes me fidgety, there must be a sense of something more powerful that can get you to that point, something that is able to shut you off from the outside world. Almost like a spiritual awakening. “Yoga is spirit. The feeling of being spiritually alive can come

felt that this was probably something I needed to do. This should give you some idea of the procrastination factor involved with my life. When I do finally make contact and am almost ready to jump in head first, I find out Neo has since moved to the U.S. and now only visits the Marbella area for retreats! Hhmm…, could this be a sign that my life simply doesn’t need any more enlightenment? While others may disagree, it would be remiss of me not to be impressed with the way Neo’s 21st Century Yoga concept has evolved into a worldwide movement. In just five years his “Journey of discovery” teachings have grown from a one to one Yogic teaching into a globally run network business, oh and by the way, if you’re thinking of having a one to one class, you’ll have to go on the waiting list for this year!

in many ways. These days my yoga practice is mainly breathing, prayer and meditation. In the past I practiced a lot of asanas (postures) to keep the body healthy, but at the moment I like to run a lot. My teaching and community work have become my yoga too. Yoga is everywhere.” He says. “So why is control of breathing so important in Yoga?” I ask. “Try to control your breathing... hold your breath and see what happens. Pranayama means breath extension not breath control. It is to be respected totally and to be extended in us and all around us. We must extend our minds to know that our vitality comes from the air we breathe. This nourishment is around us all of the time. Knowing this, tiredness will happen less. Don’t wait to yawn to take a deep breath.” Still not convinced I mention that some people have a real problem meditating, especially me. I add that I try to block out the world around me, but images of my daily life keep sneaking in and I find myself wondering how much longer it will be before I can get up and go. I have to wonder am I the norm or am I one of those really annoying people that just don’t get it? “Give up the struggle.” Says Neo, “The biggest barrier to people enjoying meditation is the preconception of what meditation might be. It is as it is. The phenomenon of present moment awareness is simply to sit and watch what is happening. If the mind is active then watch this! If distraction happens then watch 58 The Beauty Magazine

that! Keep going until you stop then try again next day. A good tip is to set an alarm for 5 mins each sitting. Sit regularly and increase the time one minute per week and see what happens." Sounds easy enough, but then I do that all the time…, there are always moments when I sit and watch what is happening - in hope it will turn out the way I want! I have

to admit though, it’s rarely longer than a couple of minutes, so surely that just makes it…a moment of thought? Nevertheless, it is a tip that I shall take note of and try out later. I personally feel that any great change that we make in life has to be inspired by someone or something and for Neo it was the inspiration of an Indian mystic called Osho. “He combined modern psychotherapy with

ancient meditation techniques." Said Neo. He realised that we need to deal with our “stuff” before even considering being enlightened. He dared to talk about sex too and used this as one vehicle to free ourselves of repressive tendencies. He was a rebel with a cause.” Looking at Neo I would have to admit, it could be possible that if I were to think about a Yoga session he would likely be my inspiration to try it, but even though I was a gymnast in my youth I no longer feel I am in the age bracket where my body can twist itself into Yoga postures. Neo disagrees but only to a certain extent, “A posture is not necessarily yoga and yoga is not necessarily yoga. A movement or position can embody the quality and state of yoga when there is a sufficient degree of sensitivity and awareness to the extent that you can feel what is happening, and you are aware that you can feel what is going on in the body. Flexibility has very little to do with yoga however, saying that, being loose feels good!” In translation - I would have to believe that the more flexible you are, the more you get out of Yoga! Still, Neo strongly believes that people can benefit from yoga on all levels and there are many clear proven benefits to practicing any kind of yoga. To end, I ask how he really feels

B INTERVIEW

about himself and if there isn’t a little ambition left lurking for something more in life, “I once dreamed of living in America and now that I live in America I no longer have those dreams. I am curious as to what each day brings; it really is one great adventure. I have a very busy life and travel a lot and that comes with

challenges. My life is no longer my own, I’m just along for the journey. Somehow many amazing projects and dearly beloved people keep crossing my path. I could not imagine being any other way and do not think for a moment about doing anything different. I love to serve and I live to love. That’s the bottom line! I decided a while ago to give up the struggle – I truly believe that suffering is optional. Most

of the time I feel great and when I don’t, I am aware of how I’m feeling and if possible I’ll run, dance or practice some yoga asanas. The down in the dumps feeling soon passes and my faith in the saying that “this too shall pass” is aptly restored. It’s all good.” So, tell me something to convince me that Yoga would be good for me… I say. “Trust your own intuition and be guided to follow your own path to spiritual awakening. This is the truest form of yoga.” Neo.

I eagerly awaited my treatment and my little feet were clean and smelling sweet ready for action. They were going to be very proud little feet knowing that they were playing an instrumental part in my

good health and wellbeing and not solely used for walking, dancing and kicking. I placed my right foot onto the cushion positioned on Lesley´s lap and waited in anticipation for everything I had heard about but never experienced. Sensitive, trained hands immediately got to work on the map invisible to the eye but I was secure in the knowledge of her training. Tender and sensitive areas that came up in the examination were absolutely correct, which I immediately identified with and confirmed. I have a problem area on the right of my knee that Lesley pin pointed with exact precision. I have a low back sensitivity which goes back to my dancing years and that was also pin pointed. The problem with my throat and neck was picked up as well! I experienced several months of discomfort with a muscle spasm on the right hand side of my neck - with a sore throat, difficulty swallowing and an aching jaw. I have had two more treatments since then and I have definitely noticed the tension has eased and a difference in the stiffness of my jaw, there has been a huge improvement. I have been in the company of a therapist who believes wholeheartedly in her chosen career and life path. Quick note for Lesley; Just please don´t make me pregnant. I know that you can but you really don't have to prove it to me. (I am sure there are many out there that would be thrilled if you did though!) BIO-ENERGETIC THERAPY WITH ELECTROMAGNETICDIAGNOSIS

I heard about this particular therapy in conversation with friends who had mentioned that NASA Astronauts were diagnosed by connecting to a similar system while out in space. Just that comment alone impressed me enough to further explore the possibilities of Electromagneticdiagnosis. I was also impressed by the fact that a fully qualified Medical Doctor was the therapist as I knew that it was not a requirement for training. I made an appointment to see Dr. Olivia Klein at her ´Pro-Wellness Concepts´ consulting room in Marbella. As I sat down Dr. Olivia gave me a brief explanation of how the Etascan works. The principle of the Etascan is comparable to the frequency search of a radio. The procedure itself is very quick, painless and convincing. Etascan scans the specific energy frequencies of the body through a head phone with an integrated biosensor and a diode. The scan gives you an energy reading of between 1 and 6 (1 being highest energy) of every major organ, blood, veins, arteries, lymph, cells and chromosomes. To explain: disturbed harmony is the start of pathological changes. The difference between healthy and unhealthy becomes visible by the indication of low energy readings. Chemistry plays a large part in the physiology of the body by acting through the neurological system which is based on electromagnetic information exchange. At the stage of energy imbalance the condition can be reversed even before the The Beauty Magazine 63

symptoms appear. The diagnostic possibilities could be limitless. I placed the headphones onto my head and as I faced the computer screen Dr. Olivia proceeded with the scanning and I watched as every detail and cross section

changed the 4´s to 3´s. The energetic stimulation sends impulses to the energetic body to induce equilibrium and bring back harmonic activity. The cause of illness can be a number of things i.e. toxins, bacteria,

Can Pain be Cured?...

BY DANTE GETANO

So, there I am minding my own business, researching some boring yet important last minute information on some celebrity wearing the latest something for my beloved editor, when I happen to come across notes I had written a while ago for my article on back pain (almost a year ago!) Feeling energized I run into the editor’s office and emphasize the importance of back health and how it would a great idea to finish my day off by doing a quick update. Obviously it worked, so here I am now giving you the latest news on my nemesis, the chronic back pain. I suffer with a degeneration of my spinal discus in the L1 and L2 spinal area, (lower back). Degenerative Disc Disease is the deterioration of the fragile and thin cartilage between the vertebrae of the spine. It is basically the narrowing of the normal disc space between adjacent vertebrae, this is what causes pain. In my case the degeneration was so severe I had very bad shooting pain in my left leg. This loss of cartilage could be due to cartilage dehydration and the modern medical diagnosis simply leaves you to be pacified with pain medication and/or cortisone to reduce the inflammation. There is still no glimmer of hope for any permanent cure. However, I believe this particular problem may be reversed. It takes initiative and professional advice, but it can be done, I’m living proof! The first step is always, determining the problem causing the pain, and the only way to figure that one out is by seeking a professional’s advice such as a licensed and well experienced Chiropractor. In my experience as a professional back 66 The Beauty Magazine

injury patient, the right doctor is the one that takes the time to examine you completely and with the help of some X-rays explain the problem in laymen terms. Here on the Costa del Sol a very well respected Chiropractor is Dr. Tim Errington of the Marbella

Chiropractic in Guadalmina. Tim explained everything to me, with visual aids and common terminology. He made a huge impact on me to first correct my bad habits in regards to posture and then by working with him to keep my spinal cord aligned and adjusted I was able to manage the pain quite easily. “My job is quite simply to see how good you can be. To take you to a place where structure and function is improved, where pain is reduced and then I show you how to maintain this state.” Tim explained. By combining these sessions with a light yoga posture/exercise, I quickly facilitated the healing process, allowing the distance needed between my vertebrae for the cartilage to heal itself. The particular yoga pose that helps my lower back pain is the Cobra pose. To perform the Cobra pose: Step 1: Lie on your belly while your head rests on your lower arms.

Step 2: Raise your forehead, look upwards and stretch your hands backwards. Let your weight rest on your chest. Step 3: The head falls a little backwards towards your back and the backward movement proceeds from the neck and the chin. Move your belly further backward as if someone is pulling your arms. The weight is more and more shifted towards the belly and the lower back does the real work. This exercise opens up the space between the vertebrae, thereby building up the cartilage between the discs. Also, drink a lot of water to hydrate the body, but more specifically the cartilage. The reversal of the degenerative discs does not happen overnight but takes time and consistency. However, the result is pain free with no adverse side effects I also found that it certainly is not a quick fix and if that’s what you are looking for then you better opt for riskier more evasive therapies such as Spinal fusion surgery, but that's an entirely different discussion. My route was slower but I felt a lot more in control of the results. The more I maintain the right posture, the faster I heal. As an added bonus, I also have less headaches and absolutely no more shooting pains in my leg.

GETTING ON THE GRATITUDE

GROOVE! STARRING SUSAN HUNTER

How gratitude gets you from London to LA! San Francisco was my destination in 2005 where I began a yearlong programme called “Living The Question”. It was an amazing journey for me which involved two weekend retreats at gorgeous locations in California, working 1-2-1 with participants on the course throughout the year via telephone calls and emails on a variety of mini projects combined with a group call every month. 68 The Beauty Magazine

At the time I was the only European taking part, all the others were Americans from all over the USA. As a result of the connections I made there I was recently sent an email from a Los Angeles-based professional writer specialising in women’s interests called Jill Daniel who also took the course. Jill had started a Gratitude Programme for women friends and was looking for volunteers. I coerced my good friend Jan from London to take part with me and we jumped head on in to 40 days of a life-changing programme. The subject of Gratitude has been a high focus on Oprah Winfrey’s programmes, you hear about it on the radio and books are coming out left right and centre. Obviously, Gratitude has been around since

the year dot but what I liked about this particular programme was that it would be a small select group. Et voila! We knew it was the right timing for my friend Jan and I to connect as she’d just spent a full-on year planning her wedding then getting married while simultaneously running her own coaching and consultancy business. So here we were – my Gratitude Girl (GG) Jan and I – on our journey every day, receiving a thought for the day which we discussed with each other. We explained the feelings we had or the emotions that were evoked. Some days I felt elated talking about the thought for the day and on others I was angry, often sad or impatient. My GG felt the same way, she also had some reactions, which I didn’t experience.

B COLUMN

One of the most interesting things that arose for Jan was that she wasn’t creating enough ‘me’ time for herself – her work, husband, family were taking up all available space - but this programme made her create her own space to chat and look at things differently and I know this brought up some interesting emotional responses to a fair number of things. The focus of my article is not to take you through the Gratitude Groove in detail but I just wanted to share with you a couple of the ‘Thoughts for the Day’ and see what reaction you get to them!

Day 1. “You cannot be grateful and unhappy at the same time.” Anonymous Day 4. The better you are at accepting a compliment the more entitled you will feel towards gratitude in general. Self-help author Iyanla Vanzant says, “Everything that happens to you is a reflection of what you believe about yourself. We cannot outperform our level of self-esteem. We cannot draw to ourselves more than we think we are worth.” (Just a small sample!)

So how did we end up in LA? Well Jill Daniel decided to have a Celebration Dinner in LA for all who took part. So my GG Jan and I thought “let’s just get on a plane and go to dinner in LA!” The next thing I know we were coming in to land at LAX! I was amazed at how sprawling the city looked (which became even more apparent when we drove around). To get over our jetlag we stayed at a hotel near the airport; in fact you could call it Hotel City as I’ve never seen so many choices of hotels as we took the courtesy bus to our destination which was the Renaissance Montura Hotel. It was very comfortable – nice Egyptian cotton sheets on the beds and all the usual freebies of a good hotel. It didn’t take us long to settle down, flick through the channels on the TV only to find that we’d arrived in the middle of the first storms for 30 years, landslides, flooding, destruction in the hills behind Hollywood! (Thoughts that came to mind then were, we should have stayed in Europe!) Undeterred, we decided to visit Universal Studios. We could have taken a guided tour package for around $90 but thought it would be easier to take public transport. Well my dears NOT THE CASE!! We first took a bus to a tram line, then changed to another train, then walked a little way, then took another small train again. Although it only cost us less than $5 for the trip it took us over 1.5 hours to get across LA, a total of around 20 miles. We

did, however, see some amazing parts of LA that you wouldn’t think existed. I had always had the idea that LA was all glamorous, but we saw some pretty down and out homes, lots of graffiti, kids hanging around lots of street corners as well as the down and outs begging. A quick change of scenery and when we got to Universal we were back in the glitzy full-on American dream. We had such a laugh visiting the various interests – our favourite was going on a Jurassic Park ride, got soaked, laughed so much that our fellow riders must have thought we’d come off a slow boat from China and our pictures reflected that as we viewed the standard photos taken as you come down the water shoot to the end of the ride …. Lunatics!! Still we enjoyed ourselves immensely there. After paying our entrance fee of $65 and deciding we couldn’t face the public transport return journey, our taxi fare cost $50 so we should have taken the guided tour after all! The following day we hired a car. Now I’m not used to automatics but we chose a lovely little sports Cabriolet and maneouvering through the streets which had become rivers with the heavy rain, it was a little freaky with driving. We took Mulholland Drive down to Sunset Boulevard and saw the most amazing homes as we drove through. Simply beautiful and to be honest we

The Beauty Magazine 69

B COLUMN both absolutely loved Beverly Hills. We then stayed at a fantastic little bijoux hotel on Sunset Boulevard called Sunset Plaza Hotel. Although it didn’t have major facilities, we were very comfortable and it was a step out onto the great Sunset Boulevard. Walking down the Boulevard we passed some gorgeous shops and restaurants. Although we didn’t recognise anyone famous, it was clear that there is an eclectic mix of people out for lunch, gossiping, reading their papers, simply just being in LA. The Celebration Dinner was being held that night in West Hollywood and some of our fellow GGs were actors, writers, one lady was a minister-in-training, another a relationship counsellor. It was an interesting dinner and sharing our experiences of the GG journey was great. What I couldn’t get my head around was that we met at 6 pm, ate at 8 pm and it was over by 9 pm. You can imagine that here in Spain we only start to go out at 9 pm. So GG Jan and I were a little flat at the end of it as no-one suggested let’s go out to a bar and have a fun evening, but grateful to return to our hotel and have an early night to prepare us for moving down to Santa Monica the following morning. En route the following day, we drove via Rodeo Drive and it was all that we had seen on TV. Glitz and Glam! But we didn’t have time to linger too long as we were meeting friends of mine who flew in from Texas to meet us in Santa Monica. We stayed in a fairly standard Best Western as it was a good rate but to be honest the room was rather tired. What was good, however, was the excellent service we received at Reception and for that alone it was value for money. We had fun going round the shops in Santa Monica, spending HOURS 70 The Beauty Magazine

in Barnes and Noble looking (and buying) loads of books and drinking our Starbucks coffee out of what seemed like buckets! I was amazed at the number of 'down and outs’ in Santa Monica - with the screen writers strike still prevalent in LA at the time of our visit, there was a guy begging for money with a little note in front of him saying “Penniless Writer”. It reminded me of the film with Nick Nolte called “Down and Out in Beverly Hills” and I wondered if some film mogul was going to discover this guy on the streets as there were a few helicopters circling overhead. Having met my friends, we ended the day by visiting Bubba Gump’s shrimp restaurant on the pier and on a whim after a few cocktails we decided to drive up Route 1 to Carmel, some 300 miles the following day. What a beautiful drive through Santa Barbara and some amazing little towns; we even stopped in one for a quick lunch and found a Tea Shoppe owned by a woman

from London who went to California as an au pair and 50 years later set up a tea shop with all things Englishauthentic, bizarre! For me, the pièce de résistance was Carmel where we stayed in the lovely Carmel Comfort Inn. Such a beautiful town with great energy by the sea. Houses are so quaint, some even built around the cypress trees that are indigenous to the area. We had champagne and canapés at Doris Day’s hotel, where visiting pooches were adored and pampered with silver dog bowls and comfortable cushions! The following day I walked along the beautiful white beach at 7 am, meeting the locals who walked their dogs (all very friendly) and then joining my friends in a local café for a fantastic breakfast of pancakes and fresh berries. We then visited Clint Eastwood’s ranch later that day where we hope to run some workshops next year (more on that in the future!). Sadly, Jan and I had to leave that afternoon but our friends stayed on and joined the locals with Clint for a sing song well into the night….. We had a great visit to California, firstly in LA and then to Carmel. Our last night in LA was staying at the fantastic Hotel Angeleno. We had a blast listening to a live jazz band in the bar at the top of the hotel which had a fab view of the city and an amazing buzz of people of all ages: bliss! And hey ho, heading back out to the airport it was a truly amazing experience; even though we had only planned to go to LA for dinner! The

Water Report BY NICKY MACEDO

72 The Beauty Magazine

B REPORT

“Agua, señor?” the waiter asked. “No, no, ¿para qué?” said the guest, laughing. “¡ Ya me he lavado las manos!”

T

wenty years ago, it wasn’t cool to drink water in restaurants, except among the ladies-who-lunch who liked to pose with a glass of Perrier water poured over cracked ice with a twist of lemon peel. Since then, the bottled-water market has gone ballistic, achieving sales of an astonishing 187 billion litres in 2007. The reason? Health and wellbeing pundits told us that drinking between six and eight glasses of water a day cleanses our systems of toxins and helps to keep our skins looking and feeling fresh. We all sat up and took notice, and the quarter-litre bottle of water (of any denomination) suddenly became a fashion statement, being seen on tennis courts, in boardrooms and bedrooms or nestling in the between-the-seats armrests of four by fours. In actual fact; up to half of the recommended quota of six to eight glasses of liquid can be taken in drinks like tea (low-caffeine is better for you) and fruit juice as well as fruit and vegetables with a high water content - tomatoes and cucumbers, for example. You’ll need a bit more water in hot weather and during and after exercise, when it’s a good idea to make up for lost fluid by drinking in frequent sips rather than gulping it down in one go. If you feel tired, snappy, have a headache or can’t concentrate, reach for a glass of water, the chances are you’re dehydrated. You’ll know your

baby needs more water when his or her tongue seems to be drier and wet nappies don’t happen so often. So where does our bottled water come from? About 97% is in the seas and oceans and 2% is locked inside the icecaps and glaciers (but watch this space!). Only a fraction of the remaining 1% is considered to be fresh water apt for drinking or bottling in the form of “natural mineral water” or “spring water”. Here in Spain, there are about fifty-five brands of natural mineral water on the market, and many more are imported from the rest of Europe and even further afield. “Spring waters” conform to minimal requirements and don’t have to have special mineral properties. “Natural mineral waters” must be EC recognised, and are streamed into very low|low|high mineral content classes. They may additionally be bicarbonated, sulphated, chloridated, acidulated or fluoridated, and may contain calcium, magnesium, iron, or sodium. The label may tell you that they are suitable for use in low-sodium diets or for preparing baby food, or have a laxative or diuretic effect. They can even be recommended in the treatment of specific diseases. Is there any difference between sparkling and still water? With few exceptions – one being, famously, Perrier - sparkling water happens when you add carbon dioxide gas to plain water, and shhhht! tang and bubbles!

Sparkling water has a slight down side: it causes minimal tooth decay. However, this is nothing compared with the havoc done to your teeth by carbonated soft drinks which are made with distilled water: you would have to down 300 bottles of sparkling water to do the same damage to your teeth as one carbonated soft drink does (next time the Tooth Fairy visits your home, get her to put the tooth in a glass containing a carbonated soft drink and check out the condition of the tooth in the morning - if you can find it!). The US Environmental Protection Agency says that “distilled water … tends to dissolve substances with which it is in contact … carbon dioxide from the air is rapidly absorbed, making the water acidic and even more aggressive … many metals are dissolved by distilled water”. Heavy regular consumption of soft drinks doesn’t just add extra sugar to the problems of 300 million obese people worldwide: the distilled water that carbonated soft drinks are made of actually causes your body to eliminate calcium, magnesium and trace minerals. Without these, the body is predisposed towards premature aging, heart problems and a long list of degenerative diseases. What about energy drinks and flavoured waters? Energy drinks don’t just contain sugar in the form of maltodextrin; their core ingredient, the one that gives you a kick-start, is a very high dose of caffeine, which the more healthconscious of us prefer to avoid. This brings us back to water, which, as advertised by the canny water companies, is the preferred choice of the informed consumer due to its zero calorie count. If The Beauty Magazine 73

B REPORT

you get bored with plain water, try one of the trendy low-cal or no-cal flavoured waters that actually fit between the wellbeing parameters and have mint, cucumber and other fresh and enticing tastes. The optimum lifestyle? Drink slightly alkaline water - say the pundits, containing minerals like calcium and magnesium. Keep away from food and drink that make the body more acidic, like soft drinks, alcohol, meat, sugar, fried and processed food, white flour and dairy products. Include some exercise, love and laughter, and look forward to a long, healthy life. Assuming that the slightly alkaline water inside the bottle is the real thing, how about the container? Glass bottles are heavy and a real beast to cart around, but glass is the safest material from the health point of view. Water in plastic bottles is easier to transport and doesn’t break when it’s dropped. If you prefer plastic bottles, there’s a major health hazard in leaving them in the sun or close to a heat source. On heating up, some recyclable plastic bottles leach into the water they contain a xenoestrogen called Bisphenol A, or BPA, which is linked to cancer and severe childhood illnesses among others. Keep your plastic bottles of water in a cool place, and if the water tastes or smells of plastic, don’t drink it! On the green front, the carbon footprint of bottled water is huge. Just making it generates up to 1,000 times the carbon dioxide

74 The Beauty Magazine

emissions created by the same quantity of tap water. And is it really necessary to subscribe to the madness of lugging all this water round the world? As far as getting rid of the empties is concerned, plastic is one of the most durable substances on earth, a plastic bottle taking 450 years to decompose. Unsurprisingly, the doomlords forecast a planet littered with plastic and tell us that if we’re interested in taking the next step towards a sustainable future, plastic is out. Not considering the environment, a year’s supply of bottled water for drinking and cooking for a family of four costs a small fortune. What’s the solution? Tap water springs to mind, but the enthusiasm of many of us is diluted by the belief that unfiltered tap water can contain parasites, chlorine, fluoride and dioxins. What do the water boards say? In Spain, the national water authority regularly carries out strict checks to ensure that the water across the country is fit for human consumption. The water board for Estepona, our local ayuntamiento, annually runs 22 complete analyses, 63 control tests and 141 tests for colour, taste and smell, plus 23 daily checks on the

chlorination level of the area water supply, all tests in accordance with Real Decreto 140|2003. To quote Thames Water as a comparable example of an English water authority, they say that they “aim to supply the highest quality drinking water … monitor drinking water supplies every day and perform multiple online and laboratory analyses to ensure … quality standards.” Interestingly, both the Spanish and Thames water authorities mention an issue many of us probably overlook; what our water pipes are made of. Up to 1980, many Spanish pipes were made of lead, and these must by law be replaced in the public water system before 2012, while Thames Water says discreetly that by 2010 “the oldest and leakiest Victorian pipes located in North and Central London will have been replaced.” Lead in drinking water can cause a number of health problems, particularly in young children. Your tap water may be obtained via desalination, a popular option for many years in, for example; Arab countries – where fresh water sources are limited and the power source is cheap. In brief, three quarters of the water produced by desalination is distilled, and although distilled water is beneficial when used for brief periods and under

B REPORT

medical supervision to cleanse and detoxify the body, the long term effects (mentioned above) are discouraging, to say the least. A more recent desalination technology is a filtering process called reverse osmosis. RO uses multi-stage sediment, carbon and membrane filters to remove rust and calcium carbonate, organic chemicals and chlorine, typically including remineralisation of the end water product. An optional final stage includes ultra-violet or ozone treatment. The US military actually uses this system on the battlefield and in training, and it can purify not only salt water but even water contaminated with nuclear, biological and chemical agents. This has to be the way forward. RO water filtering and purifying processors are generally available and can be used equally by families living in rural areas, by visitors to countries with no access to clean water, or by householders who just love to have mineral water come out of the tap. You can opt for the more expensive plumbed-in under-the-sink version

or the portable free-standing system. Compared against the annual cost of bottled water for a family of four, you’ll pay off the countertop water system in six weeks, including the cost of changing the filters regularly. It’s healthy, it’s cheap, and it’s green. What’s more, this water hasn’t been sitting around in a bottle for two years: it’s freshly filtered. You will eliminate forever the risk of tripping over the dog or slipping a disc lugging crates and packs of bottled water from supermarket to car park to garage to kitchen. And those unsightly scores of dead water bottles will never again multiply like rabbits outside the garage or in the cupboard under the kitchen sink.

DID YOU KNOW… …why your skin is wrinkled after a long bath? Your skin is waterproof all over except for your hands and feet, where it’s calloused. When the calloused skin is soaked in water for a long time, it absorbs the water and swells up irregularly, making it look wrinkled. …about the drinking straw water filter? Danish innovator Torben Vestergaard Frandsen has invented a drinking straw that filters and purifies water. Water sucked up through the straw passes through internal filters and an iodine impregnated chamber, eliminating bacteria, parasites and small particles.

…that due to environmental concerns, a large hotel company is phasing out the sale of water in its hotels and restaurants? Instead of bottled water, Scandic will be offering its guests chilled and filtered mineralised water, both still and carbonated, from taps. Scandic expects to cut fossil carbon dioxide emissions by around 160 tonnes a year. The Beauty Magazine 75
