From the Editor

ow quickly did this year go! I can’t believe that another year has gone by, OMG I have become my mother! Seriously though, I think that the upcoming year is not going to be as bad as everyone thinks...just have a look at the Beautyscope for 2009, it looks pretty interesting to me! Every year Victoria’s Secret puts on these amazing lingerie shows that combine musical talent with the runway shows. They have to be one the most lively and sensational fashion shows to occur. In fact more millions look forward to it every year. This year some of the same super angels like Miranda Kerr, Adriana Lima, Doutzen Kroes and Heidi Klum are simply stunning and choosing Usher to serenade them down the catwalk is a definite winner! Gifts, who doesn’t like gifts? Fortunately, we have selected the absolute must have beauty gifts for the season. Forget about the norm these are simply exquisite and every woman must have at least one! On a more cognizant level..., how many times have you meant to do something and forgot? How about remembering things without a list! Nicky Macedo has put together some easy to do exercises to train your brain so it remembers all sorts of things. Now there’s no excuse to forget anyone this year! Ouch! There’s so much more to talk about in this issue, but I don’t want to keep you, so have a look inside and enjoy the read, the images and the holidays! HAVE A HOLLY JOLLY CHRISTMAS!

Dear B.M. I've just recently moved to the Costa del Sol and thanks to your magazine I've been able to overcome any problems when I buy beauty products. My secret is to clip every item that I like or may want to buy later from the pages and take it to the corresponding counter at the department store... There is no need to try and explain and I immediately get what I need, that is if they have it, of course. The downside to this is, I have to always find two copies of your magazine because I don't want to keep one with holes in it! Marla D. Behavis The lucky letter won this Givenchy bronzer

Dear Editor, I've been reading your magazine for a couple of years now and having spent some time in Morocco this year I must say that I really missed it... Can you please save me one? Sandra M. Marbella Dear Sandra, I have the perfect solution for you! You can now subscribe online and have the magazine delivered to your door hassle free! This way you can find comfort in knowing you will alwayshaveacopyespeciallyforyou! The Team Dear Fashion Editor, Great fashion layout, issue 14 " Day Tripper" You helped me discover Jasper Conran bags! Thanks Amber S. Madrid Dear Editor, On your Can't live without page in the 14th issue, there is an image of Joan Collins that looks amazing, I realize that there has been a bit of touch up but she's a 75 year old icon. Having seen her at a New York premier last September, I realized how beautiful this lady really is.. Thank you for highlightingtheseamazingwomen. Bruce M. Nueva Andalucia

Dear Nicky, What an extremely informative article, Sun worship 101 was! I realized that I had developed a sun allergy something I did not think too much about until reading your article. Could you perhaps write a few more articles on health matters like this, so we can use prevention on a more regular basis, instead of getting sick and then getting medicine? By the way, thanks so much! Maritza G . Estepona

a great idea to choose real people to feature, rather than just super models! I would love to point you to some of the amazingly stylish women in Sotogrande! Shawna M. Sotogrande Dear Shawna, I absolutely agree with you, we'll be down to Sotogrande in the next couple of weeks for an event, so watch out for those cameras!

Dear BM, Just a quick note to say " Great Show!" I was so happily surprised to see an actual, proper exhibition! ... As soon as I walked in your carpeted hall at the Style N' beauty Show, it was obvious that this was not the type of event that we are used to on the coast, Lots of fun and I also bought bunch of clothes and jewellery... We'll definitely be there next year and earlier to get the door prizes, I can't believe I missed out on them!! Kelly N. Benalmadena

Dear BM, I loved your coverage of children's fashion in Issue 13, as a matter of fact I was wondering if there was a children and teen's fashion and beauty publication out there, or will you be adding that section in on a regular basis! Mary B. Madrid Dear Mary, Wewouldlovetofeaturekidsfashion on a regular basis and we will try our best to bring you fashion from the top brands for any age. As a matter of fact we are working towards a TeeneditionofTheBeautyMagazine for 2009 and we'll definitely let you know more about it as it develops.

Victoria’s Angels Bring glamour back! Victoria's Secret Fashion Show At Fontainebleau, Miami Beach Since 1995 when the very first show was produced for a world audience, the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show is eagerly awaited by both press and the public. It is now widely accepted as the world’s lingerie event of the year. Fourteen years is a long time and a lot has changed over that period, but one thing has remained consistent and that is the show has always featured some of the world’s top super models. In former years, the likes of Gisele Bündchen, Tyra Banks and Helena Christensen were some of the brighter stars, but in the current 2009 show aired worldwide in December Heidi “The Body” Klum leads some new “Victoria’s Angels” down the most extravagantly designed catwalk. It is a sensational show for sensational models. Let’s be honest here these girls are perhaps the most perfect on the planet, not one ounce of fat, flawless skin, shapely figures and to top it all, perfect smiles that melt most men’s hearts. So how does this really help us when we watch these shows? Sometimes you just have to appreciate beautiful things especially when there are elements we can actually take away with us; like push up water bra’s that give super cleavage and who can’t appreciate that!

Aesthetic Surgery

Dr. Kai O. Kaye, Director and Head Surgeon of Ocean Clinic, is answering every month readers questions regarding Plastic and Aesthetic Surgery. If you have questions on treatments or procedures, please mail to : info@thebeautymagazine.com. To better understand some of the answers to the questions, please visit : www.oceanclinic.net to read more about techniques and have a look at our 3D-Gallery. All my answers to your questions must be considered as guide lines only as I have not had the benefit of a personal consultation to assess your individual case. I have very fair skin, but still scar easily which leaves red marks. These red marks and scars are exactly what I want to get rid of, so this is why I am concerned about any surgical procedure that potentially could leave further scarring. What do you think would be the best option for me? Can you tell me more about the possible side effects of scarring after a surgical peel or laser resurfacing? Before any peeling treatment, the skin of each patient needs 42 The Beauty Magazine

to be assessed in a physical examination because some skin types are not suitable for deep peeling procedures. The fact that you simply have a fair skin type does not mean automatically that you can’ t have a deep peel, but in some cases the application procedure and the concentration of the peel must be adapted to your skin. Any kind of deep peeling procedure has a potential risk of scaring if the peeling reaches deep dermal structures. It is paramount that the treating doctor evaluates your skin to minimize that risk. Taking this in account, a peeling can provide a safe alternative to surgical rejuvenation procedures or laser resurfacing. I am well over sixty but reasonably fit, I go to the gym three times a week and keep myself very busy. I had children quite late in life and it has left me with unwanted skin and stretch marks around the waist, would I be a good candidate for a tummy tuck or am I too old? If you are physically fit, and you seem to be, a tummy tuck procedure can be safely performed at your age. In the initial consultation, a thorough physical exam and a health

questionnaire help us to determine if you are able to undergo surgery, furthermore a exhaustive blood analysis is performed to determine any possible health issues. Aesthetic surgery is very often performed on older patients, and under the conditions named above those have no more risk and an equivalent aesthetic result as younger patients. Just recently I heard about how Botox can be used for preventing over productive sweat glands. How long does it last and does it have different reactions to men and women. Also, how long does it really stay in your system, even after the treatment has worn off? The treatment of Hyperhydrosis (excessive sweating) with Botox is an effective and non invasive alternative to surgical interventions, which leave scars and have associated risks. The treatment can be performed under the arms (Axilla) and in the palms of the hand, reducing the excessive sweating almost immediately for a period of 6-7 months. Afterwards the Botox is processed and disintegrated; therefore it does not persist as a toxin in your system. International studies with year long follow-up did not

I personally attend all my patients at the first consultation, I operate all of my patients myself and I check on them personally during the postoperative period.

show evidence of long term complications, in some selective cases the Botox just loses effectiveness due to the antibodies produced by some patients. I have been researching cosmetic surgery looking for an easier way to get rid of some fat on my thighs and came across something called ultrasonic liposuction. It is noted as the latest way to remove unwanted fat with a faster recovery time and a lot less bruising. Do you conduct this form of treatment at your clinic? I use ultrasonic liposuction in patients with extreme fibrotic (hard) fat, which is often the case after a long history of loosing and gaining fat in a certain area; the body produces in those patients more connective fibres to fill out existing voids. Additionally, patients who already had liposuction tend to have much more fibrotic subcutaneous fat, for those cases it can be useful as well. Generally, bruising depends more on your individual tendency than on the extraction technique, which can be Ultrasound assisted, Vibration assisted or even Laser assisted. I worked with all systems and did get the same good results. Due to these results I personally contribute a short recovery time

There are a lot of different clinics here in Marbella and it is very difficult to choose a surgeon. I understand that some clinics are actually not clinics but more like management companies hiring lots of different surgeons and can be based more on salary requirements compared to skill. How can I be assured that the surgeon I choose is not only qualified to perform the surgery but also that he or she is fully licensed here in Spain? Are there particular organizations that I can check with locally?

which is often performed by a senior nurse or a so-called patient coordinator, which personally I would not advise. The surgeon actually performing the procedure often comes in only a couple of days per month, you meet him just before, and you can’t really assess if you trust him or not. Qualification is an issue with some of them, being often foreigners, they may be qualified in their own country but not forcefully in Spain, and some are even performing aesthetic procedures without being a plastic surgeon, which for some procedures is still legally possible here in Spain. A patient should check the surgeon’s qualifications, here in Andalucia this can be checked with Colegio de Medicos de Malaga which is found at www.commalaga. com. Any surgeon registered as well with the UK Board of specialists can be checked at www.gmc-uk.org.

The increasing demand for cosmetic procedures opens the market as well for companies more interested in making fast money without offering forcefully the best surgeons or sometimes even at least qualified ones. The problem in many big cosmetic surgery companies or clinics is that you often don’t even meet the surgeon for a first consultation

This is one of the main reasons I personally founded my own clinic. To distance myself from this type of corporation. Now I can personally provide extraordinary patient care and also attend all my patients from the very first consultation, I operate on all of my patients myself and I care for them personally during the postoperative period.

and less bruising more to an efficient technique of injection with a solution containing adrenaline and to work with very fine canullas (2-3mm) limiting the destruction of blood vessels and subsequent bruising. This takes a bit longer, but results are much smoother and recovery is faster.

Surprisingly, just as promised there was such a great selection of stands offering discounted if not free beauty products it was hard to know where to start. Many of the exhibitors who specialized in beauty were giving free mini treatments throughout the entire weekend. From facials to food intolerance there were queues of people anxious to learn about how they could look and feel better. Nestled in among these stands were also a variety of health practitioners who covered all sorts of natural health alternatives, Dr. John Garant made a very convincing case for Bio Identical Hormones, while Tim Errington of Marbella Chiropractic found little time to rest because of the amount of examinations he was conducting! But he still found the energy to keep up with demand. It was great to see some organic products from Eminence Spa and Sanctum, while Virgin Vie and many others were busy giving away skin care and make up tips to crowds of women. The Beauty Magazine 45

the exclusive show discounts and then even came back the following day! The 10 meter stage and 12 meter catwalk draped in pink and black were what you might expect to see in a London fashion show with concert lighting to fill a stadium. A complete schedule of fashion shows with twelve fashion boutiques, two children’s boutiques and two wedding boutiques was enough to keep you seated for hours of entertainment. All the models were natural and a joy to

watch, but the children’s Kids N' Pets’ show was utterly adorable. You could see there were a couple of real eager young models who caught the audience’s attention. The wedding show on Sunday was stunning as confetti filled the air on the final show of Dora Boda; the renowned Carmen Piedra introduced her beautiful Spanish garments to cheering crowds of people. On both days there was musical and dance entertainment from local theatre and dance schools and La La Land who were

finalists in the Has Spain Got Talent? Show wowed the crowd with their outstanding dance routine. Overall on centre stage the audience witnessed a flawless presentation of fantastic music, fashion and make up! Touted by all who attended and exhibited, the Style N’ Beauty Show was a massive success, it was something the coast had never seen before and with new bookings for larger exhibits for the second annual show – this is one show you won´t want to miss next year! # The Beauty Magazine 47

You can look good and feel fabulous every day of your life if you select the right colours... that enhance your skin, hair and eye colouring – however, what we may not be aware of; is that if you get it wrong... it can have the opposite affect and make us look cold, tired, ill and possibly add ten years to our appearance! The interesting conclusion for me is that a single compliment about a colour you are wearing makes an incredible impact on your self esteem and confidence. over the years. I booked a colour class with Jan Lockett from House of Colour for both myself and my daughter as I felt it would give her a good kick start into the world of fashion and she might as well get it right early in life rather than wait as long as I had. Jan opened the two hour class was with a brief presentation about the concept and history of House of Colour. Since 1985 the company has grown to become a worldwide phenomenon. Jan went on to explain that in art there were 3 primary colours – red, yellow and blue. Red being the primary colour from which all other colours were made – (the base of all colours). With the addition of either yellow or blue the tone of the mixture changes dramatically. Artists over many hundreds of years worked to define and group colours into shades that work well together. At House of Colour they use a colour wheel which is split into half – colours more yellow in hue are in one half and bluer toned shades are in the other. Our skin has pigment which is found in the dermis. All skins are either predominantly yellow or blue in pigment which can clearly be seen when comparing colours from each on the colour wheel. The top half of the

wheel with the yellow colours are divided into Spring and Autumn (Spring lighter and brighter and Autumn deeper and more muted). The lower half contains the bluer shades and is divided into Winter and Summer (Winter more bright and sharp, Summer lighter and muted). This wheel is not generic to the image consultancy industry and can be found in paint charts, hair colour chart and the fabric industry. Jan then seated us in front of a mirror and set to work with selecting drapes from the colour wheel and draping them across the front of our chests and close to our faces. What a selection and variety of colours we went through. It's slow, methodical and eventually very precise. After using drapes from different sides of the wheel she eventually determined the set of colours that most suited our skin. One set made the skin look fresher and younger, and the other made our skin appear dull and cold. Once we determined which half of the wheel the skin was most enhanced by – the second set of colours then determined which quarter of the wheel the skin looked most comfortable in. My daughter Chanelle and I both fell into Autumn but more precisely I was Autumn Leaf and Chanelle was a Vibrant Autumn. Towards the end of our class, we were presented with a wonderful leather wallet of colour samples. Each shade was then rated according to our best colours for items of clothing close to the face,

the bottom half, any accessories, right down to boots and shoes. The choice of gold or silver jewellery was also determined. Our wallets have a permanent place in our handbags and we never leave home without them. It would be a crying shame to be out shopping and not have it with you. I began with a few favourite colours and now I have so many to choose from! And now the compliments received for the odd well chosen colour will no longer be few and far between, but rather more of a “daily dose” of colour confidence. Jan also has Image classes which helps you find the look that suits your personality and body shape and how to dress accordingly. Finally the make-up classes help you with all the colours of your seasonal palette and you are given a workbook full of handy hints on application. For the same cost of a reasonably priced outfit or a pair of boots we felt that it was great value for money and definitely a smart investment. B SCOPE

SAGITTARIUS November 23 - December 21

This year will bring you a lot of firsts. You’ve begun a journey into real personal development to improve your health and your well being. There will be many adjustments that you have to make but you are surrounded by supportive people that believe in what you can do. It’s time for you to reveal the true self assured and confident person you are, by not listening to the naysayers and concentrating on what you think is best. Expand your knowledge by taking an extra course or research a new path, there is a real possibility that the first half of the year your imagination and creative abilities will flow effortlessly and one of your ideas will be brilliant. Be careful to involve those you trust implicitly. You have probably been thinking about this for a while, but you must focus on your physical health and that means joining a gym or seeking out a professional trainer. Some around you will warn you of heavy costs and expenses, but you know that there is no point in being a success without being healthy enough to enjoy it. Try your local sports centre, spend at least 30 minutes a day on exercise that gets your heart rate up. You will never turn back because by July you have never felt this good in your life! If you are experiencing a bump in your relationship this will all be sorted by August and you may even want to find a way to seriously enjoy some quality time together. You have to be careful towards the end of the year not to get so caught up on the little things, stay focused on the big picture and this will avoid a lot of hostility that could be generated by your decisions. You may even get to the point that whatever it is that you are doing is no longer right for you because you have grown, and so it will be time to move onwards and upwards. 64 The Beauty Magazine

Capricorn December 22 - January 20 As with many of us the upcoming year will be focused on where the economic concerns will leave us. Especially for you, this means you have to let go of things that are out of your control. Money will flow easier and you will be open to new ideas that can bring about a much better future. Organization is key to your success and this will increase your productivity two fold without you even noticing it. Your personal life could be hindered in the romance area so this would be a good time to step back and concentrate on feeling good. Try to make time at least once a month to visit a Spa, this relieves any of the tension you may feel at home. This will also distinguish any animosity before it begins and by April your home life will be harmonious. Leading up to May you are now ready to take that romance on at full speed, so, remember to stay focused on you and not lose yourself in all the excitement. Don’t forget how you got to feeling this good because if you do, by May you may need to concentrate on your health and personal welfare again. Maintain your “you time” and you will benefit from a healthy work environment and the past economic issues will be forgotten. After July your health and social environment will be of great comfort to you, so don´t allow any little anger issues to get in the way. September will be your travel time and there is great potential for you to grow spiritually, then by October you will be in the perfect frame of mind to reconnect with old friends or perhaps just get together again with your girl pals to share your experiences of the year, as there will be a lot to talk about. November will be all about work and if you are fully dedicated you will have tremendous success and your family will join you in December to celebrate with you!

Aquarius January 21February 19

The upcoming year will bring great change to your personal and professional life. It is a time for reflection to look back on the things that are most important to you and focus all your energy on them without being distracted by outside influences. The need to express your individuality will surface and you will find that your personal goals may take a little longer to achieve, but don’t feel disheartened because as you move through the year you will notice just how far you have come and how much your life has changed. In the first few months you will get the urge to improve or redesign your home, but take your time on big decisions as you may end up with changes you don’t like! By June everything will be in place and you will feel better about the changes that are occurring. There are so many things going on in your life in 2009 you may need to ground yourself so you are well prepared to accept them, this means that learning how to meditate or maybe taking up yoga is the ideal option for you to keep you level headed and stress free. By August it will be time to re-evaluate your goals and the reality of success, however, if you stay in the right frame of mind this will allow you to be inspired and create a new future you thought wouldn’t be possible. This is also a time for you to clearly express your personal feelings to improve your personal relationship. In September through to November personal development in romance and education will provide an insight into what you are capable of achieving. This year is all about laying the groundwork for a much brighter future, so stay the course and remember your ambition and enthusiasm will be rewarded all in good time. When December rolls around this will all make sense to you and if you are judicious you will find comfort in knowing that you made all the right decisions!

PISCES February 20 - March 20 What a great year for love and romance! Whether you are already in a relationship or perhaps waiting for the perfect partner, this year will bring you everything you want in the way of romance. Words of caution… if it is serious do not keep secrets because as positive as this year is you must be careful not to throw it all away by hiding things! For those who are in a relationship that does not feel completely right, it is time to move on or make a conscious decision to change the parameters of your relationship. Do not hold on to things that do not make you happy because this year is all about happiness in your personal life! This is the perfect time to have a make-over, visit 2 or 3 beauty counters and ask them to do your make up. You will be amazed at the difference and your positive energy will draw even positive elements into your life and if you make the right choices maybe even a wedding! It's a whirlwind of social activity throughout the year, but don´t spend too much while you’re having all this fun. Minor disputes with family members during the summer will sort themselves out so don’t be concerned over them or they could turn into much bigger problems. Sometimes, it is best just to say “you’re right!” especially if family is important to you. In February you will be in a much better financial position. Be sure not to hold onto things that could put you back to where you were before, March will be the month of clearance in your life so take advantage of some clear thinking and don’t hold onto resentment or guilt. Your inner self is awakened and you can see why you should let go of the past and simply look to the future. By November you need some personal space, step back and don’t have too high an expectation, you will have greater results in the short term allowing you to move forward much faster.

Aries March 21-April 19

There’s nothing like starting the year with both feet on the ground and smiling! And you have every reason to smile because other than little blips around July and October most things could go your way! However, there are definitely areas in which you can improve your professional and personal life, particularly when it comes to communication. Patience is a virtue and by being more understanding and having empathy for those around you, 2009 will bring you great joy. Sacrificing some of your more selfish needs allows you to enjoy a very satisfying relationship. You may need help with this so it might be a good idea to seek out a life coach or therapist so you can move forward easily and accept all the positivity around you. For those without a partner you may not have to look far as a close friendship may develop into much more. You probably won’t travel much until the end of the year and this could be due to all the good financial decisions you are making. Your professional ability to make all the right decisions will help you through the difficult economy ahead. March is the time when you start laying the ground work to a better financial position, careful planning allows you to profit from this at the end of the year but it’s not necessary to be Scrooge! When it comes to your career as long as you avoid any confrontation there is a good chance of a promotion or perhaps a big reward of appreciation. In fact; all means of business and career in 2009 will be particularly good for you, especially if you acknowledge the support and hard work of your colleagues. Maybe look into some investments, but get sound advice before you make any serious decisions and definitely discuss it with your partner first. Your home life will be full and rewarding with possibly caring for children in the summer, this is your chance to be imaginative and create a fun environment for all those around you. 66 The Beauty Magazine

Taurus April 21 - May 21 In terms of love this will be a very testing time for you so tread cautiously. If this is a relationship you want to remain in, avoid any misunderstandings and conflicts. But if you get through this your relationship will be much stronger than before. You may be feeling irritable in the beginning of the year, due to finances or frustration overall with the economy. Concentrate on your work this will help you avoid any major confrontation. The positive side to this is that your work environment has great potential for success. By August everything should have calmed down and there is a remarkable improvement in your home life. There’s a good chance that with a little help from your friends a personal dream could become a reality. Your professional career will be at a turning point by the middle of the year and you must allow the sweeping changes to come into your life, they are pivotal to your future success. Artistically speaking this could be a great year for you, make the break and go for it – especially if you have been thinking about venturing into the world of artistic creation! Don´t make any investments until after June by which time your purchasing power will increase. By July you should be well readjusted both personally and financially and then by August all will be clear on which way you need to move forward. Everything you do now will be critical to the future of your personal relationship, so it might be a good idea to plan your year with some calming treatments these will keep you in a state of serenity and clear headedness. From September onwards you will notice the decisions you made were the right ones but keep an eye on your health, make an appointment to have a complete health check to avoid any future discomfort. Overall 2009 is a year of clarification in your personal life and the decisions you make during that time will be the basis of your future relationship.

Gemini May 22 - June 21

The outlook for Gemini is bright with some clouds hovering overhead. In January-February your relationship may need some nurturing, your partner could show signs of insecurity and so will need reassurance from you, then your relationship will flourish. If you are a single Gemini opportunities are boundless and even marriage could be in the cards! Family plays heavily in your life and there may be times you don’t feel appreciated, now is when communication is vital. Focus on the positives to encourage a powerful family force. The entire year shows renewal in your personal relationship, ties will be stronger and more spiritual. All baggage that has accumulated over the years will be dropped off and left at lost luggage, it is important so you can fly high together without the added weight. Your thought process changes and you will move toward more philosophical areas. Most of March will be work, travel is imminent and your career is on the right path. It's a good time for a new look, buy garments that flatter your figure rather than hide it, you will see an immediate difference from those around you. There will be a slow period from April through to June where you might start to feel discouraged, don´t be, by June all will be well with the world. Travel with your partner will further strengthen your ties. During this time positivity and you are an inseparable pair. Your finances could be restricted if you are not careful to plan well, but August should have everything sorted. This is a time for you to review your life and how you approach certain problems, especially failures, your responsibility levels are heightened and you learn to manage situations you think are out of your control. You could enter a stressful time in the fall but by December you will be re energized and overall 2009 is so much better than 2008. Difficulties may arise but nothing you can’t overcome if you stay cool, finances look good and even a new car is on the books!

Cancer June 22 - July 22 There is a strong influence in partnerships this year with big changes that bring positive outcomes. It is a time to reflect on your relationship and start enjoying it, you will have a new level of self esteem that lets you forgive and forget. There may be some tense situations in the first half of the year but you can overcome them. In August everything should be much calmer and your relationship will be back on track. Family members could ask for your help but don’t feel trapped or obligated, you must remain disciplined. Communication is the key to your personal growth and this is also the time to focus on keeping fit as your health is going through a period of adjustment and you need to be prepared physically. Any level of exercise is better than none so do what you enjoy, if it is dancing, swimming or bike riding! Do it often and keep your nutrition well balanced. A new direction in work could be more favourable to you and it may even lead to spiritual fulfilment. There is a good chance that you meet an old friend from your past. The second half of the year is focused on your personal identity and your health, you will also be more positive about your relationship and any fears will be washed away. In August finances are the main concern, but this concentration will produce a favourable outcome for the rest of the year. Don’t let close relatives interfere with your affairs, but find a way to get the message across with diplomacy to avoid future problems. It is a year of adjustments but huge improvements are a result of these changes. It is probable you will travel outside your country so make sure your papers are in order and try not to worry too much about the costs. Although there will be times when you feel out of control focus on good health then you can take advantage of all the potentials of positive partnerships and collaborations.

This could be a challenging year for you, but you are completely capable of achieving all your goals as long as you don’t forget how important your health is. Romance and creativity is on the cards long term and in the first few months you will be presented with nothing but open doors. Take full advantage and use your organisational skills to keep everything in place. When moving at this fast speed you must remember you are responsible for all your actions, so don’t think about jumping into anything without careful consideration. There may be a couple of conflicts in February with your partner or maybe a family member and there will be some form of contract to be signed, it’s always good to listen to advice, but this is your decision. By March this situation is resolved. In May your career will be at the forefront, this will be the ideal time to get down to the hair salon and get your hair sorted so you can maintain a sophisticated hairstyle without too much effort. It is important to have a professional image for you to achieve all your career goals in a timely manner. You will be surrounded by friends in June that bring you complete joy, take the time to soak it in for your own personal development. In July your professional career is right on track, but be careful not to get too over confident, this has been one of your problems in the past and again could be your downfall. In August you are completely self motivated and health will be a top priority, quick tip; do some research into healthy eating. Toward the end of the year will be all about your family and friends and there could be a chance for you to show an act of kindness without revealing it. By December your personal relationships will be at the forefront with profound changes and personal growth, this is the time to let go of any guilt or resentment if you want to move forward. 68 The Beauty Magazine

Virgo August 23 - September 22 This New Year brings a fresh new start and you are full of healing energy to keep fit and healthy. Romance is filled with passion and beauty. In February there’s a good chance to take leave with your loved one, break all your normal rules and have the most passionate vacation ever! When March rolls around you will encounter new opportunities in your career or business and learning about a variety of things enables you to find fresh new ways to be innovative. Stay up to date, as things change rapidly and you don’t want to be left behind. Initially it may be overwhelming but get used to things changing and adapt accordingly. Most of the year will be focused on your profession and you could travel extensively, but it’s worth it. Around the middle of the year you need to make sure that your home is in order as well as your office, get organized, things in their places and a place for all things… sometimes it is better to have a good clear out of all the things you rarely use and ask yourself, “Do I really need all this stuff?” The extra space will help you to think freely. In July you can recover from all that intense thinking and organizing. In September you have the ability to concentrate on family and finances by which time you can revel in your success in both. However when October comes along don’t rock the boat with criticism, remember not everyone feels things should be as perfect as you do. November looks like a move and possibly even the end of a career path...then you have time to make all the necessary preparations for your home and the big holiday gatherings. By the end of the year you take advantage of a new work project for the following year which has excellent prospects. 2008 will be a year of analysis and improvement not only in your work but also in your home and especially your health.

Home is where the heart is… or at least in the beginning of the year! Odd jobs and improvements around the house are your priorities as well as minor adjustments in matters of the heart. Sometimes you have to renew and revive relationships and this is your turn to do exactly that! Go out and buy yourself some new lingerie and add some sensual oils to the mix, it’s surprising what a little kindness can do. You will concentrate on your partner and also your family where you can clarify situations that have been bothering you for some time. It’s important to clear these things up because someone in your family could be the catalyst to a promotion. From May through to July you will be in a position to work with foreign companies; this opens doors to travel and your partner will be your strongest supporter and motivator. By August your relationships with both your partner and your family is in great shape and even your friends offer information that can help further your career. Although you will be experiencing a life of fulfilment during September through to November be cautious with your spending habits and follow a budget to avoid hiccups in your financial happiness. The holiday season will draw your family close and you will feel completely at ease with everything, you will finally have what you have been expecting for a long time. For you 2008 will be a year to free yourself of any skeletons, a time for healing, it is important to recognize this to allow true happiness

During the first part of the year the changes that were set in motion in the last year continue to unfold in both business and at home. At home however you might find things a little restricting due to the adjustments you have to make. This carries until most of April but everything will settle and you can calm any troubled waters. During this time you have to forgive and forget even if it means you come out far worse, this could be the challenge that changes your future. A restructuring of your finances is in order, so find ways not to waste so much money. This is a time to make wiser purchases, some of the best beauty products in the world are still value for money. The trick is to test everything before you buy and stop buying things you end up throwing away. Your methodology will change too improving your overall attitude. In April you are in control and making a huge impact on the success of your company. Your health may suffer due to the stress and added responsibility, seek out help ort from those around you, they want to help. Basically until June you are torn between the need of freedom and the restriction of responsibility. You may have to change your mind set to allow clearer thinking on your part. Finally in July - you get to the root of the problem with your health and it could be either physical or mental, however, it will finally release a period of abundance for you. In November you produce exciting proposals and develop a new direction in your career goals. On the personal front you see a light at the end of the tunnel and harmony is within your grasp. This will be a time of real happiness and your struggles with responsibilities and obligations have been worth every minute. You come to realize at the end of the year that each dilemma you have overcome has helped you take one step closer in your personal evolution.    The Beauty Magazine 69

Will you take the challenge to

make good things Hello happy readers! Or am I being presumptuous presuming you are happy? I’m going to ask you to do something really strenuous now... jump up and down for 30 minutes.... and then ask yourself that question…. Only kidding! But I would like to ask you to consider for a moment, how well you rate your feelings on a scale of 0 -10 (10 being fantastic! 0 being suicidal). I imagine most of you will rate yourselves around 7 (safe – just like Len Goodman often scores on ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ (to those of us addicted to the show)). So my question to you is…. Why don’t we aim for 10? What’s stopping us from absolutely living our lives to the highest possible level? I’m not going to get all nostalgic or indeed serious here as I wouldn’t want to suggest any immediate drastic changes to your lives, but perhaps we can nibble away at some of those gremlins that prevent you from looking more positively on life – especially leading up to Christmas and a sparkling New Year in 2009! After all, Lewis Hamilton won the 2008 Grand Prix Championship and America now has a fantastic new President who will bring change to the country - if not the world, so why not see success for everyone?!! Let’s play a little game. (Note: as I write that last sentence I can already imagine my friend William 70 The Beauty Magazine

BY SUSAN HUNTER saying “What on earth is she on about; wasting my reading time with such drivel?!). Well give it a chance William and read on…. Many people, especially in the Western world, love hearing about the underdog’s rise to success – how they overcame unbelievable challenges on their journey, possibly with major

heartaches, emotional revelations about their inner selves and many other feats. We sit on our sofas, perhaps sipping some good wine or a cup of tea or coffee and pass judgment. So we’ve got Christmas on the horizon. Personally I hate those people who say it’s 55 days, 5 minutes and 10 seconds until Christmas Day and have already bought their presents a year ago in the sales. Think for a moment what Christmas or your seasonal holiday means to you (apologies to those of you who don’t celebrate Christmas,

I think we can be too selfish and too narrow visioned sometimes. The credit crunch is probably not such a bad thing because it stops us from overspending on unnecessary glitz and instead concentrate more on the natural things that surround us which we could enjoy even more. How about if we only gave one present to each person on our list rather than the bundle of many? Kids might riot but equally they might understand things better than you’d imagine, (my editor seems to think not!).

but you’ll get the gist of the message). What could you do to make someone else’s life very happy for that day which is not just about buying a present? Perhaps you could think about making something yourself (a cake, a card, writing a poem or a play for all to take part in!). We often forget the meaning of Christmas and the fun of getting people together to share; have a good laugh and enjoy a glorious meal together. You might be going away for Christmas, possibly going on a

I’d say get up on the parapet of the world and see beyond the obvious range of vision. There’s so much treasure and happiness out there for all of us to take in and it needn’t cost a penny! If we can all focus on the positive and find ways of achieving that without the need to be so commercially-engrossed you’ll be pleasantly surprised at what can happen...

So the game plan is: 1. Think about the things you’d love to attract into your life that are free – create a lovely picture of this and ‘feel’ the energy inside of you as though you’ve already got it. 2. Keep focussing on the positive. Anytime you have a negative thought coming into your head push it away with a silly image that will make you laugh and the negative energy will simply disappear. 3. Make a plan for what you want and need to do leading up to Christmas Day and follow it through! 4. Get your family and friends involved with your plan. And for those of you with big families definitely create a fun, silly play that you all get involved in (even dressing up/props/music); it gets everyone involved and laughing. 5. Reinforce the good things in your life; never forget to be grateful and help others wherever you can. Giving is much more rewarding than receiving, but you already knew that… these are lessons that were taught to us from a very young age, but it is important not to forget this! Above all, have fun! And finally, write in to us at the Beauty Magazine with your stories on how you’ve had fun over the Festive Season and we can share that with you in 2009! OK, so now it’s ?? days, 12 hours and 50 seconds until Christmas Day ………….

supercharge Your Memory This super storage facility - the cerebrum - is split into two halves, "left" brain and "right" brain. Each half specialises in different subjects - take a look at the subjects lists, and you'll see why creatives say they're right-brained and geeks are left-brained! In reality, we all use both halves of the brain.

Your memory is amazing. Even if you fed ten new bits of information into it every second for a lifetime, it would still be less than half full. The reception desk for shortterm memory is just behind your forehead. It sifts information at the rate of about ten bits per second, either binning it or passing it on to the long-term memory super storage facility behind it. 72 The Beauty Magazine

boxes on the shelves in the shoe shop offered plenty of storage room, but as all the boxes looked the same, there was no way of identifying each individual memory. myself walking round the shop and locate each item in its place, remembering the shrivelled shells of the walnuts, the smell of the jute sack the potatoes came in and the way the rice moved when I leaned against the bag. My brain stretched and cracked, and it felt good. I didn't know then about Greeks and Romans, but I had discovered the basis of the room system they used to jog their memories. The room system Greek and Roman orators impressed their audiences with long speeches made without notes and without umming and ahing. They would create a memorable image for each topic they planned to talk about and associate these memorable images with familiar objects in a sequence of rooms in their homes. As they were giving their speeches, they would take an imaginary "walk" around these rooms. In the first room, the orators retrieved the images referring to the first topic that they

the process and take time creating your room and its contents. Memorise it carefully. Take a tenminute rest, and then go over the visual you've created. You've just taken the first step towards putting your room into long-term memory. Now, sleep on it. The next day, revise your mental image of the room and the familiar objects inside it. This is the second step to long-term memory. Once you've done this - and not before! – have a two- to ten-minute rest, and then attach a shopping list of ten items to the familiar objects in the room, one item for each object, using memorable images. Have fun doing this - it should be an enjoyable experience that the mind will want to return to! Some lucky people are born with long-term memory systems already in place that rate them top billings on TV and in the circus! Synesthesia is when using one sense triggers experiencing another at the same time - hearing sounds and "seeing" them in colour against closed eyelids is the most common. The composer Messiaen gave this amazing description of the "harmonic" Can't remember something? Relax. Let your colours he experienced: thoughts nibble around the edges of the memory, "blues, reds, allowing your senses to get the "feel" of it – smell, blues striped taste, touch, sounds, colour and image, how your with red, body was moving, time of day or night, where you mauves and were, who was with you. Photographic memory happens when you take about thirty seconds to scan an entire page - apparently without reading it as ordinary people understand reading - and store a nearperfect mental snapshot of the page in your memory banks. This system beats the socks off writing microscopic notes on the inside of your forearm before going into exams! Savants often suffer from physical or developmental disabilities as well as autism, but in compensation they have a jaw-dropping faculty for almost perfect memory recall. The character played by Dustin Hoffman in the film "Rain Man" is a real person: the savant Kim Peek. Kim has a photographic memory; he can recall the content of some twelve thousand books on a vast cross-section of subjects from history, geography and maths to sports, music and the calendar! Frustratingly for the rest of us, Kim and others who can press the replay button of their long-term memory at will find it difficult to explain just how they switch on. One feat of memory that seems superhuman is remembering a list of twenty or more unconnected words, repeating them in order. Once you know the trick, you don't have to be a savant to achieve it! It's done using the link system, making up a story that connects the

words together one after the other. When you're inventing the story, use the same techniques as you did to create the memorable images in the room system; remember to make the images funny, exaggerated, ridiculous, and so on; use all your senses and enjoy yourself! With practice, you'll be able to remember long lists. Memory loss? Forget it! On the subject of forgetting, let's address the fallacy that as you get older, your memory goes. This unfounded theory is particularly popular in times of economic crisis when there's a job squeeze and the "failing" over-50s are eased out of the top end to make way for the "youthful energy, adaptability and innovation" of new recruits at the bottom end. This is a prime

EIGHT STEPS TO LONG-TERM MEMORY 1. Create a room 2. Furnish the room with familiar objects 3. Memorise 4. Revise 10 minutes after finishing study 5. Revise after 24 hours 6. Revise after 1 week 7. Revise after 1 month 8. Revise after 6 months example of negative stereotyping, one that, sadly, some older people accept as gospel, joining the "I can't remember" club, taking a back seat and fading away. At seventy as at seventeen, if you keep fit, active, creative and connected with life you're unlikely to have difficulty remembering things. Medical research confirms

that age doesn't mean brain-cell loss when you have a normal, active and healthy brain! On the contrary, a well-exercised brain actually sprouts new connections and improves with age. In the next few weeks, you'll have plenty of opportunities for making lists! Set up your room system and practise using memorable images to attach items to the familiar objects in the room. Revise the basic visual after twenty-four hours, one week, one month and six months until it is second nature! In the next issue of The Beauty Magazine, find out how children can absorb information more easily and how to remember numbers, names and faces. We'll also be taking a look at how natural communications systems have been copied to create mind maps, a fantastic method of taking quick notes in meetings, lessons and lectures! Till then, happy holidays! Enough with the post-it notes!

USE IT OR LOSE IT! In the last few years, "brain-training" games have become popular with all ages. The makers recommend a daily three-minute workout that includes arithmetical, focus and memory tests and "improves your mental agility and memory power by exercising your prefrontal cortex." Ouch! Handheld braintrainers will probably fill the toe of many a stocking and exercise many a prefrontal cortex this Christmas! General knowledge quiz shows are threatening to become more popular than reality shows on TV (loud cheers from some of us!) – even Terry Wogan is hosting a TV version of the memory game pelmanism. "Tell me, and I will forget. Show me, and I will remember. Let me do it, and I will remember forever." Confucius
